Part A--General Information *

*1. Location

Tavares is in Central Florida, 31 miles northwest of Orlando, 130 miles
south of Jacksonville and 90 miles east of Tampa. It is on Lake Dora
and Lake Eustis and near Lake Harris. The maximum elevation is 79 feet.

2. Transportation

U. S. Highway 441 and Florida Highway 19 pass through Tavares. The Atlantic
Coast Line Railroad provides rail passenger service daily except Sunday.
The Seaboard Air Line Railroad provides freight service only. Bus service
is provided by Greyhound Lines. The nearest airport with passenger service
is at Orlando, 31 miles from Tavares.

3. Population

Lake County had a population of 27,946 in 1945. The population of Tavares
was 1,128 in 1945.

4. Climate

5. History

Tavares the county seat of Lake County, was named in the year of 1875 by
Alex St. Clair Abrams, a descendant of Lopez Para Y Tavares, a Grandee
of Spain. The meaning of the word "Tavares" is "The Center" or "The
Middle." The town is almost entirely surrounded by three large lakes,
Lake Dora, Lake Eustis and Lake Harris, Lake Dora and Lake Eustis are
connected by Dora Canal. Lake Eustis is connected with Lake Harris by the
Dead River. Lake Eustis is also connected with Lake Griffin by Haines
Creek, which in turn, is connected with the Oklawaha River, which flows
into the Saint Johns River, thence to the Atlantic Ocean at Jacksonville,

The Pioneer Building, which was the original courthouse from 1890 to 1924,
has been remodeled and stands in good condition, as a landmark of the
early history of Tavares, with its beautiful setting among the lakes, in
the highlands of Central Florida. The new courthouse is in a beautiful
setting and has a flagpole base composed of carved stones from the various
States and some foreign countries.

6. Major Sources of Income

The citrus industry is Tavarest major source of income. One of the
largest citrus packing houses in the state is located here. Also important
are watermelons, garden vegetables and a large building sand plant. A
candy plant, known all over the world for its production of fine sweets,
is located in the heart of town. Sports fishing brings many tourists to
the section.

Local baseball, football and basketball teams have games during the seasons,
The nearest golf course is at the Lake County Country Club at Eustis.

3. Tourist Clubs

During the tourist season, active tourist clubs meet in the City Park
and Pavillion. No dues.

4. Recreational Clubs.

Local tennis club. No dues.

5. Civic Organizations

Chamber of Commerce, Garden Club, Home Demonstration Club, Kiwanis Club,
Woman's Club.

6. Fraternal Organizations

Eastern Star, Masonic Lodge.

7. Entertainment

Theater, Saturday night dance-:at the Pavillion, and various card parties
sponsored by the tourist clubs.

8. Recreational Facilities

The City Park has tennis courts, shuffleboard courts, croquet, swings and
rides. The high school athletic field has rides, swings and completely
equipped gymnasium.

9. Hunting

Quail, some turkeys, squirrels and rabbits are found in the vicinity of
Tavares, Unposted hunting grounds are approximately one-half to one mile
from the city. There are no hunting lodges or guides.

10. Fishing

Excellent fresh water fishing is found in the many lakes in the county.
Lake Dora, Lake Eustis, Lake Harris, Dora Canal and Dead River are in the
immediate vicinity of Tavares, Shellcrackers, bream, bass and speckled
perch are the principal varieties caught.

Local fishing camps are:

Villa Lagoon--4 cottages, 2 to 4 persons. Boats, motors and bait.
Carlls Three Lakes Lodge-12 single and 3 double cottages. Boats, motors
