Okaloosa County



1. Location

Fort Walton is in West Florida, 50 miles east of Pensacola. It is on the
Gulf of Mexico and near Choctawhatchee Bay and Santa ,JRosa Sound,. The ele-
vation is about four feet.

2. Transportation

U. S. Highway 98 and Florida Highway 85 pass through Fort Walton. Modern
Coaches, Inc., and Coastal Stages-provide bus service for Fort Walton. Air
and rail service is not available.

3. Population

Okaloosa County had a population of 16,155 in 1945. The population of Fort
Walton was 1,080.

Salt water pompano, king mackerel, bluefish, scamp, ling, bonito, amberjack,
tarpon, sailfish, shark, devil fish, ray, flounder, leatherjack, channel
bass, sea bass, speckled trout, grouper, lady fish, skipjack, eilweis,croaker,
black fish, mullet, drum and sheepshead are caught in the Gulf of Mexico.
Fresh water bream, black bass,. crappie, perch and shellcracker, are caught
in the vicinity. Captain J. E. Brunson, Captain Zack Brunson, Captain Alfred
Destin, Captain Buster Destin and Captain Dewey, of Destin, Florida, and
Captain Leonard Destin, Fort Walton, have charter fishing boats.
