Part A--General Information


1. Location

Flagler Beach is on the upper East Coast of Florida, 20 miles north of Day-
tona Beach. It is on the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. The ele-
vation is 22 feet.

2. Transportation

Florida Highways A-l-A and 11 pass through Flagler Beach. Bus service is
provided by Greyhound Lines. Rail passenger service is not available. Air
service is available at Daytona Beach.

3. Population

Flagler County had a population of 2,652 in 1945. The population of Flagler
Beach was 88. The 1948 population is estimated at 500.

4. Climate

5. History
Flagler Beach was named in honor of Henry M. Flagler, Florida East Coast
developer and builder of Florida East Coast Railway.
6. Major Sources of Income

Flagler Beach has very attractive tourist accommodations and a desirable and
beautiful coast. Shrimping and commercial fishing are good along the coast.
A 600-foot fishing pier is available for residents and visitors.

6. Fraternal Organizations

Masonic members attend Bunnell Lodge #100.

7. Entertainment

Flagler Beach Hotel provides organized entertainment for visitors during
January, February and March and June, July and August. Hotel is open year
round.

8. Recreational Facilities

Civic Park, shuffleboard courts, nine hole short link golf course (no fee),
horse shoe pitching, fresh sulphur water swimming pool (no fee). Beach
showers at beach side of town hall are free to the public.

9. Hunting
Quail, duck and wild turkey are found in this area. It is approximately two
miles to unposted hunting grounds. Hunting lodges and guides are not avail-
able.
10. Fishing
Salt water fish are caught in the Atlantic Ocean, Intracoastal Waterway,
Halifax River and Matanzas River. Fresh water bream, perch and trout are
caught in Burlow Creek. Fishing camps, guides and charter fishing boats are
not available.
11. Churches

Baptist Church has services in Flagler Beach. Catholic services are held at
Korona,
