OUR LOGO
Raices (Roots) is a large bronze fountain sculpted in 1992
by the Spanish artist Luis Sanguino.
The construction of the allegoric group started in november 1991 and ended May 30,
1992. The sculpture was inaugurated at La Princesa Promenade, in Old San Juan,
to commemorate the 500 years of the discovery of America.
It depicts the Amerindian, African, and Spanish origins of Puerto Rico as
human figures, with dolphins cavorting at their feet. The 19th-century promenade
was an esplanade where the Spanish colonial gentry once strolled
while enjoying the balmy Caribbean air.
The photograph was taken by artist Edgar Jim6nez-Ferrer,
University of Puerto Rico Library System, Rio Piedras Campus,
for ACURIL XXXVII PUERTO RICO.
