NOTE- Trees include all wherever found

and not Just "commercial" groves*

It may be noted that tangerine figures do not show separately bearing & non-bearing
trees. It is assumed that there are few tangerine trees not bearing as there has been little
incentive for increasing the acreage, due to low returns for past several years* Apprbxa
mately 11 per cent of the orange trees and 4 per cent of the grapefruit trees were not bear-
ing in 1940. This shows the preference for now plantings has run strongly to oranges, but
not very heavy for oitherg. Some of those trees have come into bearing since this survey,
Satsuma plantings are not included with orange figures. Satsumas aooounted for
88,680 trees ahd limes 7559254 trees. Lemons, rough lemons, kumquats and other miscellaneous
citrus amounted to 742,029 trees bearing and non-boaring.
It should be notod that percentage of trees bearing is not necessarily an accurate meas-
ure of the production by counties. Some counties have heavier yield per tree than do others
