STATE AGRICULTURAL MARKETING BOARD

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA

December 1, 1943

Mr. William L. Wilson,
Director of State Markets,
305 Exchange Building
Jacksonville 2, Florida.

Dear Mr. WTilson:

On the following pages will be found reports covering the construction,
equipment and operating accounts together with itemized commodity sales of each
state market. Consolidated reports covering all of the markets) individual reports
will be found on the first nine pages of the report, and are as follows:

(a) Comparative Report and Recapitulation of Commodity
Sales for nine years
(b) Consolidated Commodity Report, Florida Products
(c) Consolidated Commodity Report, Out of State Products
with Recapitulation.
(d) Consolidated Trial Balances covering all Markets.
(e) Consolidated Gain and Loss Statements covering all Markets.
(f) Consolidated Gain and Loss Statements covering all Markets,
Detailed.
(g) Consolidated Financial Statements covering all Markets.

These statements are self-.explanatory and present a clear picture of the
financial status of the entire system of State Markets. By comparison with annual
statements of prior years the growth of the system of Markets, both in funds
handled and volume of business transacted, can be determined.

On pages 10, 11 and 12 will be found a record of the 82 buildings which
have been constructed in the various State Market locations. This record gives
the location of the buildings, the unit number of each building, the type of
building and the value as reported on the books in this office. This record is
included in this report in order that the market managers may refer to it when
they need information as to the book value of their buildings.

Beginning on Page 13 will be found the following statements for each
market:

(a) Trial Balance
(b) Gain and Loss Statement
(c) Financial Statement
(d) Commodity Report

These statements reflect the conditions of each market as of June
30, 1943. All items of operating expenses h.ve been charged to the markets
including Fire Insurance, Compensation and Public Liability Insurance and
Bond Premiums however- depreciation on buildings and eQuipnment has not
been included in the expenses, but a notation has been made at the bottom of
each Gain and Loss Statement as to the amount of depreciation chargeable to
each market.

During the past year several of the markets have increased their
fees and as a result the Gain and Loss Statement on those particular markets
appear to much better advantage than formally. These markets are Plant City,
Palmetto, 7auchula and Florida City. The cost of operating all of the markets
has increased considerably in the past year and indicaticns show that the cost
of operation for the coming year will not be decreased, but possibly will be
increased. For that reason it would seem that practically all of the markets
should endeavor to increase their income at least in proportion to the in..
crease in operation.

On page 1 of this report is a comparative statement showing the
smiles of the markets since the system was begun during the season of 1934-35.
During 1934- 35 only one market was in operation and the total sales were
$518,625.00 During the past season 27 markets were in operation and the
total business transacted was $20,141,103.64 which represents an aovrago per
market sale of $745,967.00. During the season of 1941-42 it is interesting
to note that the average per market sale was only $511,879.00. Another thing
that is brought out on page 2 of this report is the great increase in the
value of poultry and poultry products sold during the past season as compared
with previous seasons. Up until the season 1941-42 a comparatively small
amount of poultry and poultry products were sold. During the season 1941-42
a total of $174,972.01 worth of these commodities were handled. However, over
$100,000.00 of this amount represented eggs purchased under the government
egg buying program. During the season just closed $179,299.40 worth of these
products were sold while only -,bout $20,000.00 represented eggs bought under
the government program. In other words about $159,000.00 worth of poultry
and poultry products were handled during the past season as against about
$70,000.00 for the previous season independently of government buying,

Livestock sales also showed an increase of $342,125.13 over the
season ending June 30, 1942. On the other hand the sole of creamery pro-
ducts at the Chipley Market has decreased considerably. This decrease can
be explained because of the fact that so many of the producers in the Chipley
area have gone into other lines of work which have to do with various defense
projects in that area.

There is one item which has been handled during the past season that
has not been previously reported on any of the markets. That is the auction
sale of crude gum turpentine handled through the Lake City Warehouse. In fact,
it is believed this is the first time that gum turpentine has been sold at
auction anywhere. Turpentine farmers as well as the buyers seem very pleased
with tho results obtained in this new method of sale. A total of 76,010
barrels were sold for approximately $125,000.00.

Another outstanding accomplishment for the past season was the auction
snle of pecans on the Starke, Lake City, Marianna and Pensacola Markets. The
average prices obtained as a result of the auction were highly satisfactory
when compared with very low prices farmers have received in the past when
they sold their pecans at the farm to itinerant buyers. The average
price obtained during the past season for all of the markets was about
18) per pound net to the former,

On page 6 will be found a Consolidated Gain and Loss Statement for the
year, and on pages 7 and 8 will be found the same statement detailed. The
consolidated statement shows total income from all sources for the year to
be $83,906.83 and the total expenses including insurance and bond premiums
but not including depreciation, to be $80,619.03 a gain for the yenr of
$3,287.80.

All in all it would seem from the figures contained in this report that
the system of State Markets has enjoyed a very successful season.

Respectfully submitted,

J. G. Michael
Market Controller
