Swamy Pandy G. Swamy of Holmes Beach died Oct. 21. He was born June 9, 1935, in Ajjampur, India, to a family in the lowest social class, known as the untouchables. In telling his story, he often said he went from a known destiny to an unknown destiny. When the English left India in 1947, the new government focused efforts on this majority group that had been offered no education or opportunity. Pandurangappa Govindaswamy was educated through their scholarship programs and medicine was the career goal selected by his father. It was in the Mysore Medical Colfor his future: playing cards. His skill and luck helped others from his community, too. Decades later, his new father-in-law would teasingly say he lost his daughter in a game of poker. Dr. Swamy passed the medical boards in India and focused on anesthesia, completing his internship and residency in Winnipeg, Canada. In 1967, he joined staff of St. Joseph Hospital. In 1969, he completed a fellowship in neonatal anesthesia, a specialty that he loved until his retirement in 1991. Dr. Swamy provided financial support for the maintenance and education of his extended family in India. Sabo, 67, of Bradenton, died Oct. 25. Born in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania, he moved to Bradenton in 1999 from Pittsburgh. Mr. Sabo attended and was an active volunteer at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Holmes Beach. A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 248 S. Harbor Drive, Holmes Beach. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 43rd Street Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Friends of the Island Library. Condolences to www.brownandsonsfuneral.com. He is survived by wife Mary Ellen of Holmes Beach; son Christopher Patrick and wife Christie of Queensbury, New York; daughter Elizabeth Ann of Clermont; brothers Francis of Calumet, Pennsylvania, Edward of Fairfax, Virginia and Richard of Riverdale, New York; sisters Mary Kate Boyle of Juno Beach and Margaret Zelenak of United, Pennsylvania; and three grandchildren. He established a middle school for girls in his former village in honor of his father. Following a stroke in 1999, he and his wife moved to Anna Maria Island. He continued his interest in cards with local friends and neighbors and loved meeting new people. He offered a perspective on life that most people remembered long after he met them. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the donors charity of choice.
