Summary Report of the 1974-75 Small Grain Forage Screening Nursery

R. D. Barnett and A. R. Shankl-

This report includes the results of the second small Grain Forage Screening Nursery
which was sent out to 27 locations in 13 states. The 74-75 nursery contained 147 entries,
including 31 ryes, 54 wheats, 9 triticales, 38 oats, and 15 barleys. The composition of
this nursery was considerably different than the first nursery with 85 new entries being
included this year.

The two main goals of this nursery are to give the cooperators an opportunity to
evaluate potential new varieties of small grains for forage and to provide the originator
of the entries with information on the potential usefulness and adaptability of his material.
Because of the relatively large number of entries in this nursery only a single 8-12 foot
row of each entry was grown at each location.

Forage estimates were made (0-9, 0- best) at least three times during the season. The
first rating was made when the majority of the lines were ready for grazing or clipping.
This rating reflects stand establishment, tillering, and fall growth. Following the first
rating the forage was removed and the nursery allowed to regrow. Then a second rating was
made at mid-season to indicate regrowth and winter growth. The nursery was again cut and
allowed to regrow until a third rating was made late in the season to reflect spring
growth. At some locations additional clippings between ratings were necessary to prevent
excessive top growth and freeze susceptibility. Several cooperators actually cut the plots,
weigh them, and then rated them according to their actual production.

Most cooperators did an excellent job of recording useable data. At the time this
report was written data had been returned from 21 of the 27 locations. Several people
reported data on more than three dates in which case several dates were averaged to reduce.
the number of ratings to three. Several cooperators used a rating scale other than 0-9,
In these cases we put the lowest rating they used as 9 and their highest rating at 0 and
then made equal divisions for those in between to convert their data to a 0-9 scale so that
it could be included in the averages. Entries that winter killed early in the season ware
assigned a value of 9 in later ratings.

Before the seed were mailed out, germination tests were run, kernel weight was de-
termined, and calculations made to determine the weight of 300 viable seed. Thus each row
at each location contain approximately 300 viable seed. This method of preparing the seed
gives a slight advantage to the entries with larger seed since a higher seeding rate
(Ibs. per Acre) would be obtained with larger seed. The State seed lab (Florida) ran the
germination analysis. Entry No. 29, Tetra Petkus rye, had a germination percentage of 77%
but the seed were old and apparently very low in vitality since many locations reported a
poor stand. Only two plants were obtained in a 10ft. row here at Quincy. So the ratings
for this entry probably do not reflect its true forage potential. The poor stand for entry
29 also might cause the ratings for the two adjoining entries, 28 and 30, to be slightly
higher than normal due to a lack of competition from the missing or thinly planted row.

The forage ratings for the 21 locations which returned data are included in this
report. The data from three locations were not included in the averages across locations.
Quite a bit of missing data occurred at Gray Court, S. C. (30 miles SE of Greenville);
volunteer ryegrass overgrew the nursery at Overton, Texas and prevented a third rating;
and cattle broke in and grazed the early production off at Hereford, Texas..

The rye with an overall average rating of 4.4 was considerably better in forage pro-
duction than triticale 5.0, barley 5.1, wheat 5.2, or oats 5.3. Rye, oats, and barley
had better forage production in the fall and winter, whereas the wheat and triticale
seemed to come on later and produce more forage in the winter and spring.

Among the ryes the best early season production was obtained with FL-EXP-206 and FL-EXP-
209; and best mid-season production was obtained with Acco WR-811. A number of varieties
gave good production late in the season with Acco WR-811 having the best overall forage
rating among the ryes (3.6). Athens Abruzzi (3.8), Penngrazer-W (3.9), and NF 100 (3.9)
also had good season averages.

Among the wheats the best early season production was obtained with Ga H69-138-11,
FLX64-103-347, FLX64-132-331, NI-67, and Coker 73-16. A number of entries gave good mid-
season and late production. Among the wheats Funk 0048 had the best overall rating with
4.5. Other entries with good forage production included Ga. H69-1040-4, Ga H69-138-11,
L. 707, MO W8072, and Funk 7172 all with overall ratings of 4.7.

Among the triticales 0K697947 and FL72283 were the best early producers; 6TA386A the
best mid-season producer; and 6TA876, NWT 21-74, and 0K72179 the best late producers.
The triticales all had similar season averages with OK697947 having the lowest with a 4.7
rating.

A number of the oats produced good forage early in the season. Coker 234 and Chilocco
had the lowest ratings for mid-season; and ST 64201-3 and ST 64202-2 had the best late
season ratings. The best overall averages across all three rating were obtained with Coker
234 (4.8), and Coker 227 (4.8), ST 7222336 (4.8), Coker 74-15 (4.9) and Tex 72 C2015 (4.9).

The best early season barley forage producers were Florida 102 and 1817 X BKF, both
are upright spring types. Several produced equally well for the mid-season and late
ratings. Florida 102 (4.7) and NAPB A (4.7) had the best season ratings.

Relatively good winter hardiness data was obtained with 7 locations reporting either
winter killing or frost damage data. The wheats with an average rating of 1.7 were the
least damaged by cold weather as a group with oats with a rating of 4.5 being the most
damaged. Bonel, Okhem, Balbo, and Acco WR-811 were the hardiest of he ryes. Ryes from
Florida were the least hardy among the ryes. Many hardy wheats were included in the
nursery with the wheats from Oklahoma, Missouri, and Funks being among the hardiest.
Three advanced lines from the Florida breeding program were the most susceptible to winter
injury. Among the oats the Missouri lines 0 6174, 0 6172, and 0 6175 were the hardiest.
The spring oat RPB. 23-73 and the A. strigosa FL70Q1153 were the most upright in growth
habit and the most susceptible to cold damage. Among the barleys Will, Kerr, and C113855
were the hardiest and Florida 102, 1817 X BKF, and Georgie the least hardy.

The 1974-75 year apparently was relatively free of diseases since very little disease
data was returned.

The third Small Grain Forage Screening Nursery which will be grown during the 75-76
season is now being assembled at Overton, Texas by A. R. Shank. The seed sets will be
mailed out to cooperators in late August or early September. Each cooperator and anyone
who would like to include their lines in the next nursery should send one pound of seed of
each entry to Dr. Shank as soon as possible.
