Broccoli is a very minor crop in Florida. Smaulroduction aeas ave existed in the
past, but because of various problems such as poor markets, production has not increased.
Small production areas do exist for sale on local markets or direct sales from farm. Interest in
this latter area has increased in northwest Florida.

The objective of this trial was to evaluate broccoli cultivars suitable for spring production
in northwest Florida.


Materials and Methods

This trial was conducted at the North Florida Research and Education Center on an
Orangeburg loamy fine sand soil. Fertilizer was broadcast and incorporated at 1200 lb/A 3-9-18
(N-P205-K20). Additional fertilizer was sidedressed at 400 lb/A of 34-0-0 (two applications at
200 lb) and 350 lb/A of 0-0-22. Total nutrients applied were 172-108-293 lb/A of N-P205-K20.
Diazinon AG 500 was applied ppi for soil insect control at 2 qt/A. The soil was bedded and
Goal 1.6E herbicide was broadcast at 20 oz/A prior to transplanting.

All entries were seeded into 1 in x 1 in x 3 in expanded polystyrene flats on Jan. 8,
1990. Transplants were set on Feb. 27, 1990. Plant spacing was 9 inches in row by 36 inches
between rows. Plots were single row, 27 ft. long. Four replications of each entry were
arranged in a randomized complete block design. Irrigation was supplied by overhead
sprinklers. Insects and diseases were controlled with timely applications of registered chemical
products.

Marketable heads were harvested from April 24 to May 14, 1990. Marketability was
determined by head size, head tightness and bead size. Weights and head counts were recorded.






Results

The time from transplanting to first harvest ranged from 56 days for 'PSX 50785' to 73
days for 'Samurai'. The average number of harvests ranged from 1 for 'Mercedes' to 4.6 for
'T-368'.

Marketable yield (23 lb crates) ranged from 122.1 crates/A for 'Samurai' to 687.2
crates/A for 'Emerald City'. Average head weight (lb) ranged from 0.58 lb for '87-16' to 0.96
lb for 'Green Belt'. For all entries the average percentage of transplants producing marketable
heads was 72.4%. The range was from 21 to 89%.


Summary

When selecting cultivars for production the primary factor is marketable yield. Head
weight should also be considered since some heads are too!large for shipping. Harvest dates and
the number of harvests can be adjusted by cultivar selection.
