From 1985 to 1995 corn acreage in Florida decreased from 240,000 to 60,000 acres. Average
yield during the same period increased from 65 to 90 bushels per acre. In 1996 corn acreage
increased to 100,000 acres. Corn is used as both grain and silage in livestock rations by Florida
producers. To aid producers in selecting the best adapted varieties to produce, IFAS Research and
Education Centers obtain corn hybrids from commercial companies for evaluation in experiment
station trials. This report contains results of the 1996 corn performance trial conducted at the North
Florida Research and Education Center, Quincy, Florida and from the West Florida Research and
Education Center at Jay, Florida.

The NFREC test site was turned with a moldboard plow in late February. Immediately prior
to planting 1000 lb/A of 5-10-15 (N-P2s-K20) and Sutan-Aatrex at 3-1 (lb/A a.i.) were incorporated.
Following planting Counter 15G was banded over the row at 15 lb/A. Additional nutrients were
applied in 2 applications to give a total of 300-200-300 lb/AN-P,20-K20. Plots were machine planted
at about 1.5X the desired population on 4-9-96 and hand thinned after emergence to a final
population of30,000/A. Soil type was Norfolk loamy fine sand. Overhead sprinklers were used as
needed to maintain optimum soil moisture conditions for corn production. Corn was harvested on
9-9-96 with grain yields reported at 15.5% moisture.

Tropical hybrids were planted on 6-6-96 with the same herbicide and insecticide practices.
Total nutrients applied were 200-100-200 Ib/A N-P205-K20 applied half preplant and half when about
knee high. Corn was harvested on 10-25-96 and reported as bushels per acre at 15.5% moisture.

Table 1 shows performance of temperate hybrids at the NFREC test site. Average
production for 2 and 3 years is included for those that were tested in those years, since performance
for more than one year should be considered when selecting hybrids for planting. Grain quality rating
and number of days from planting to silking are included in Table 1. Tropical corn hybrids can be
planted later than temperate hybrids and may fit better into some cropping systems. Table 2 shows
performance of some tropical hybrids at NFREC, Quincy, Florida'

Table 3 shows grain yields and other characteristics of temperate hybrids at the West Florida
Research and Education Center near Jay, Florida under non-irrigated conditions. Table 4 shows
yields from WFREC for 4 consecutive years, with averages for 2, 3, and 4-year periods. It is
desirable to consider performance from similar locations. Table 5-6 show performance from
experiment station trials in South Georgia, which is applicable to many north Florida locations since
soils are very similar. More detailed information is available in Georgia Agricultural Experiment
Station Research Report Number 642.
