HORTICULTURAL TRIALS 1IITH SNAP BEANS, SPRING 1961

Bush Bean Trials

These trials are part of the Southern Cooperative Vegetable trials.
All varieties were planted in a randomized block design in rows 4 feet apart and
20 feet in length. Thirteen varieties were compared in the observational and 9
in the replicated trials. Three replications were grown in observational trials
and 4 in replicated trials.

Fertility conditions.--The soil analyses, before and after the bean
crop are shown in Table 1. Fertilizer additions for the crop are shown in Table
2.

Planting and harvesting.--The soil was fumigated January 12, 1961, with
approximately 18 gallons per acre of Telone. Two seeds per foot of row were
planted on March 13. The harvest period extended from May 15 to June 1.

Diseases and insect control.--Parathion, Sevin or Malathion and Dithane
2-78 were applied weekly in spray applications. Insects and disease? 're not
problem.

Results.--Observations are recorded in Tables 3 and 4.

Pole Bean Trials

These trials are also part of the Southern Cooperative Vege ,I 1~se .
Five varieties were planted in randomized block design vith 8 replicate. The.'
rows were 4 feet apart and the record plot was 20 feet in length. A standard type
trellis was used.








Fertility conditions.--Soil analyses before and after the pole bean
crop are shown in Table 5.

On December 1 1960, cattle manure was broadcast at the rate of 30000
pounds per acre. On March 28, 1961, armonium nitrate at a rate of 103 pounds per
acre was applied as a sidedressing.

Planting and harvesting.--The soil was fumigated January 12, 1961, with
approximately 18 gallons per acre of Telone. Two seeds were planted per foot of
row on March 21. The harvest period extended from May 31 through June 19.

Diseases and insect control.--Sevin, Parathion or Malathion and Sulphur
were applied weekly with a hand duster. Insects and diseases were not a problem.

Results.--Observations are recorded in Table 6.

General

These observations are for only one season and definite recommendations
on varieties or fertilization cannot be made from these data.
