Research Report 1977-3

Summary Report of the 1976-77
Small Grain Forage Screening Nursery

R. D. Barnett and L. R. Nelson-1

This report includes the results of the fourth Small Grain Forage
Screening Nursery which was sent out to 21 locations in 12 states.
There were 116 entries in the nursery including 18 ryes, 47 wheats, 20
triticales, 19 oats, and 12 barleys. The composition of this nursery
was considerably different than the previous nursery with 57 new entries
being included this year.

The two main goals of this nursery are to give the cooperators an
opportunity to evaluate potential new varieties of small grains for
forage and to provide the originator of the entries with information on
the potential usefulness and adaptability of his material. Because of
the relatively large number of entries in this nursery only a single
8-12 foot row of each entry was grown at each location.

Forage estimates were made (0-9, 0= best) at least three times
during the season. The first rating was made when the majority of the
lines were ready for grazing or clipping. This rating reflects stand
establishment, tillering, and fall growth. Following the first rating
the forage was removed and the nursery allowed to regrow. Then a second
rating was made at mid-season to indicate regrowth and winter growth.
The nursery was again cut and allowed to regrow until a third rating was
made late in the season to reflect spring growth. At some locations
additional clippings between ratings were necessary to prevent excessive
top growth and freeze susceptibility. Several cooperators actually cut
the plots, weigh them, and then rated them according to their actual
production.

All the cooperators did an excellent job of recording useable data.
Data from all but three locations are included in this report. The
nurseries failed at College Station, Texas; Knoxville, Tennessee, and
Laurinburg, North Carolina for various reasons and no data is included
from these locations. Three additional locations were able to obtain
only two forage estimates so these were not included in the averages
across locations. A list of the locations is presented in Table 1.
In addition to forage ratings additional data was obtained on winter
killing, heading date, powdery mildew, leaf rust, stem rust, Septoria
nodorum and for the first time stripe rust. Entries that winter killed

early in the season were assigned a value of 9 in later forage ratings.

Before the seed were mailed out, kernel weight was determined and
calculations made to determine the weight of 330 seed. Thus each row
at each location contained 330 seed. This method of preparing the seed
gives a slight advantage to the entries with larger seed since a higher
seeding rate (Ibs per Acre) would be obtained with larger seed. This is
a relatively heavy seeding rate so percent germination would play a
relatively minor role in stand establishment.

The rye with an overall average rating of 3.5 was considerably
better in forage production than triticale 4.9, wheat 5.3, barley 5.4,
and oats 6.2 (see Table on page 3). This is the poorest showing we
have had for the oats, so the cold winter really reduced the forage
production of the oat lines in this nursery. The average for the early
rating indicates that rye (4) produced significantly more than all the
other crops (6) during the cooler than normal fall. During the even
colder mid-season rating rye was again superior (3) followed by
triticale (5), wheat (5), barley (6), and oats (7). In the late or
spring rating triticale had the best rating (3); followed by rye, wheat,
and barley (4); and finally oats (6).

Among the ryes the best early season forage production was produced
by Maton, NF72, NF74, NF270, Athens Abruzzi, and McNair Vita-Graze
(Table 2). The best mid-season producers were Bonel and NF270. The best
late-season producers were Bonel, Maton, NF72, NF74 and NF270. The best
season average was produced by Maton (2.5) which was closely followed by
NF72 (2.6) and NF270 (2.6).

Among the wheats the best early season forage producers were
Coker 75-27, McNair 3069, Coker 76-27, and NAPB 1282-76. The best mid-
season producers were NAPB 1293-76, NAPB 1291-76, NAPB 1241-76, NAPB 1153-76,
and Coker 76-22. A number of lines gave good spring production. North
American Plant Breeders submitted the wheats which produced the best
season averages NAPB 1293-76 (4.5), NAPB 1291-76 (4.6), NAPB 1307-76 (4.6),
and NAPB 1153-76 (4.6).

Among the triticales NAPB 9-75, OK 7111828, and AM 2149 were the best
early producers; XF022, NAPB 15-75, and NAPB 9-75 the best mid-season
producers; and 6TA 131 and 6TB072 the best late producers. The best
season averages among the triticales were by AM 2149 (4.3) and XF022 (4.3).

None of the oats did as well as they have in the past and all entries
did poorly the first two ratings. Although there were not much difference
among the oats Coker 76-16 had the best season average (5.8).

Among the barleys the best early season forage producers were
OK 7338071, Tambar 401, and Florida 102. The best mid-season producers
were OK 7338071, H 66-12-1, At 29 NB, and Kerr. The best late-season
producers were Will, OK 7338071, and Kerr. Among the barleys OK 7338071
was particularly outstanding as a forage type and had the best season
average of 4.3. This particular barley line had a better rating than all
the oats, wheats, other barleys and all triticales except for two which
also had season averages of 4.3.

- 3 -

Good winter hardiness data was obtained with 16 locations reporting
either winter killing or frost damage data (Table 3). The ryes with an
average rating of 1.5 were the least damaged by cold weather as a group
with oats with a rating of 4.0 being the most damaged. Among the ryes
Bonel,NF 270, and Athens Abruzzi were the most hardy and Florida Black,
Gator, and Tifton Dwarf the least hardy. A number of the wheats showed
good hardiness but Coker 76-28, McNair 3069, T-76-867, and T-76-871
were very susceptible to winter killing. Among the triticales 6TA876,
6TA522, and 6TA131 were the most hardy and 6TA205-21 and 6TB227 the
least hardy. All the oats were damaged by the cold winter but MO 0 6174
and NF 113 proved the most hardy and F170Q1153, Florida 501, and TAM 0-301
the least hardy. Will and Kerr were the hardiest barleys.

The 1976-77 year apparently was relatively free of diseases since
very little disease data was returned. Powdery Mildew and leaf rust data
was obtained at three locations (Table 4). Stem rust, stripe rust, and
septoria nodorum data were obtained from one location each.

The fifth Small Grain Forage Screening Nursery which will be grown
during the 1977-78 season is now being assembled at Overton, Texas by
L. R. Nelson. The seed sets will be mailed out to cooperators in late
August or early September. Cooperators who wish to enter their lines
should send one pound of seed of each entry to Dr. Nelson as soon as
possible.
