The University of Florida Brooks Center for
Rehabilitation Studies is dedicated to conducting
world-class rehabilitation research that will restore
hope and improve the quality of life for people with
disabling injuries or illnesses.

The Center was created in 1999 as a joint effort
between the UF College of Public Health and
Health Professions and Brooks Health System
in Jacksonville, which donated $2.5 million
toward its establishment. The gift was eligible
for state matching funds, raising the total to $5
million. More than 40 researchers from UF,
Gainesville's Malcom Randall Veterans Affairs
Medical Center, and universities across the
country have been recruited to study and
strengthen the organization, delivery and
financing of rehabilitation services.

Innovative research initiatives target an array of
disabling physical conditions such as stroke,
brain injury, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord
injury, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, and falls
among the elderly.

The Center takes advantage of the talent within
UF's health and science community. Rehabilitation
specialists work on interdisciplinary research teams
with physicians, psychologists, biomechanical
engineers, neurophysiologists, epidemiologists,
economists, and other specialists to evaluate an
array of rehabilitation strategies, develop novel
clinical interventions, and study health policies
affecting people with physical disabilities.

Brooks Center researchers work with volunteer
patients at Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital in
Jacksonville and at Shands HealthCare rehabilitation
facilities in Gainesville and Jacksonville. Two
state-of-the-art human performance laboratories-
one in Gainesville and another in Jacksonville-
offer high-tech assessment and measurement of
motor performance.

We believe effective rehabilitation research requires a
cross-fertilization of ideas from multiple disciplines.
It is the best strategy we know for making a
difference in rehabilitation practice, in health policy,
and in the lives of individuals with disabilities.

Rehabilitation is about improving quality of life for
people with physical disabilities. At the University
of Florida Brooks Center for Rehabilitation Studies,
we are creating the science for rehabilitation and
improving the way rehabilitation treatment is
provided.

The Center was endowed with a start-up gift from the
Jacksonville-based Brooks Health System, our primary
clinical partner. Its founder and chair, J. Brooks
Brown, MD, believes that world-class rehabilitation
research can dramatically improve the quality of life for
people with disabilities. As part of Florida's premier
academic health center, we are poised to make a huge
impact in rehabilitation.

You C(an Make a Di erence
Securing private support is critical to our mission. By
investing in the UF Brooks Center, your support will
play a meaningful role in the rehabilitation therapy of
future patients. You can be a part of the advances that
are sure to emerge from our labs, our clinical testing
sites, and from our efforts to translate these advances
into everyday clinical practice and health policy.

For information regarding how you can make a gift and
contribute to this effort, please contact one of

Thanks to a new approach to rehabilitation therapy for those with incomplete spinal
cord injuries, he now is walking independently.
"I came to UF in a power wheelchair and could use a walker only sparingly," Kordgien
said. Ii,,. I.i i here, we did away with the chair. Then two or three weeks later, the

The 56 year-old middle school principal enrolled in the UF Brooks Center's experimental
locomotor training program three months after surviving a spinal cord injury.
"He had completed inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient physical therapy and had
returned to work, but his gait was slow and uneven, so his primary means of mobility
was a power wheelchair," said Andrea Behrman, PhD, an associate professor of physical
therapy and lead researcher in the locomotor training program.
Until recently, the -r,,,- ,lin- .-1,-, about spinal cord injury was that once a neural
connection between a part of the body and the brain was destroyed, communication
between the two areas was lost forever.

But researchers now believe that the human nervous system
can adapt in response to the injury to find new neural pathways.

Kordgien received nine weeks of locomotor training, five days a
week. When his nervous system began to get a clear picture of
what walking was, the sensory circuits then took that information and produced stepping.
