Recycling Christmas trees

By Jason Merritt
Staff Writer

You've gathered 'round it with family
and friends, piled packages under its delicate
branches, you've even sung it songs of
honor...Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas
Tree! Thy leaves are so unchanging...
But now you're starting to remember it's
leaves are changing The carpet is full of
needles, its delicate branches are drooping to
the floor and there's a strong stench rising
from the sugary water
that has kept it "gas p',
looking, good 0 "
this long..
Yep! ^.
It's time to a ;

this year's j
Christmas' ,
tree!
Most
cities in Pinellas
County are offering
.Christmas Tree Recycling programs. The
trees will be processed into mulch and dis-
tributed to the public for free. Make sure
you help out your city though by following a
few guidelines.

1) Clean Tree; Remove all decorations
including hooks, garland, tinsel and lights.
2) Loose Tree; The tree should NOT be
inside a bag or can.
3) Free Access; Residents of'apartments
or condos should place their trees near the
garbage dumpster, but not blocking access to
the dumpster.

Here is a list of cities who HAVE recy-
cling programs and a few details to help you
help them.

KUWAIT Senator Bill
Nelson. D-FL., said Thursday
that Floridian troops in the
Middle East are "Well fed, in
high spirits, and happy to serve."
But Nelson also warned that
a destablized Iraq woul be
"exploited" by Iran and that
bringing U.S. troops home too
early would lead to instability in
Iraq.
Nelson said Iran was the
topic of his discussion with
every head of state in the Middle
East.
Defense Secretary Robert
Gates was in Baghdad on
Thursday surveying troop levels
to see if an increase in military
strength is necessary.
Nelson said, he is "very
impressed" with Gates and that.
Gates's approach to Iraq and
Middle East policy is "fresh,"
and a "new way of thinking."
One of those, changes in
thinking is bipartisanship.
"The Bush administration
has tried to hold a monopoly on
foreign policy," Nelson said.
The Bush administration
objected to Nelson's visit to
Syria and.said it undermined the
U.S. position in Iraq.
Nelson said that Iran should

PINELLAS COUNTY -
There will be a shortage of
beds at homeless shelters in
Pinellas County this holiday sea-
son.
The lack of available ser-
vices to the homeless has not
gone unnoticed by county offi-
cials however.
The trend in homelessness
in Pinellas County has gone in'
one steady direction over the last
seven years: upward.
The numbers are staggering.
Nineteen percent are children
and 21 percent are women. The
number of homeless families is
on the rise.
"I get at least one call a day
from a homeless family trying to
find a home," Sarah Synder said.
Snyder is the director of the
Pinellas County Coalition for the
Homeless. Recently, she and
other county and business lead-
ers formed the Homeless
Leadership Network.
The network includes

be the "top concern and worry."
Nelson said there is a 12 month
window for Sunni and Shiite
leaders to settle differences
before "chaos erupts."
Dividing Iraq into several
different states is "not an idea
that has alot of currency,"
Nelson said. "But the idea
should still be on the table."
"Working with Iraqi forces
is difficult because of the
increase in sectarian violence,"
Nelson said.
Nelson said. that General
Abizaid is an "honest" man and
a person who "simply told the
truth" regarding the situation in
Iraq.
Abazaid told a Senate com-
mittee last month that troop
presence in Iraq should not
sharply increase or decrease ,
rather the U.S. should focus on
training Iraqi forces rapidly to
secure their own country.
Abazaid also said last
month that civil war in Iraq is
possible but preventable. "I hate
to see him [Abizaid] retire,"
Nelson said.
The retirement of Abazaid
would allow Defense Secretarn
Gates to choose his own com-
manders.
Nelson was finishing a 12-
day tour of the Middle East
when he spoke to reporters via
conference call oniThursday.

Pinellas County commissioner
Kenneth Welch, St. Petersburg
City Council member Virginia
Littrell, as well as several faith-
based and non-profit organiza-
tions.
"This is an issue that faces
more than just St. Petersburg,"
Snyder said. "That is why the
network, was formed between
four different cities in Pinellas
,County."
The network has established
a 10-year plan for. Pinellas
County to end homelessness:
Shelter use often increases
:during the holiday season and
during the colder weather but
many people end up back out on
the street.
About 48 percent of home-
less people in Pinellas County
are considered "chronic home-
less," meaning they have been
on the street for one year or have
experienced four or more
episodes of homelessness in
three years.

Mann studies the checklist as his team carefully wraps a spacesuit
before packing in a specially designed container prior to stowing on
the shuttle. From left to right are Ray Smith, Craig Meyer, Mark

It's a tight fit as the stowage team in their cleanroom suits deftly guide
the spacesuit container into the orbiter.

We all know what it's like.to pack for a
vacation, but how about packing for a trip to
the International Space Station? Now imag-
ine packing the space shuttle with all the
vital equipment and personal items the astro-
nauts need for a successful mission.
Troy Mann, lead technician for United
Space Alliance's Flight Crew Systems, and
his team have the daunting task of making
sure the space shuttle crew members have
everything from toothbrushes to spacesuits
stowed in the orbiter by launch day.Unlike a
trip on Earth, there's no convenience store in
space to pick up a few missing items.
"When people go on vacations, we all
know we usually forget something," said
Mann. "That has never happened stowing for
the shuttle." And Mann should know, since
he's been packing the shuttle for more than
seven years.,,
The supplies and equipment are first
transported to NASA's Kennedy Space
Center in Florida by truck from the Johnson
SpaCe Center in Houston
After arriving and being unloaded at
Kennedy, the cargo is checked for damage,
weighed, tagged and put into shipping con-
tainers until it has to be sto\ ed for flight.
Every item has a 'specific locker or
space, and Mann's team follows a precise
map for stos ing the supplies in the middeck
crew compartment on the shuttle.
"There is no room for error. Every

square inch of space is used and planned for
ahead of time," said Mann.
That includes food, clothing, mid-deck'
seats, flight tools, cameras, parachutes, safe-
ty equipment, sleep restraints and, most
importantly, the astronaut spacesuits --
known as "extravehicular mobility units."
Each spacesuit weighs over 200 pounds
and is received in four pieces. It takes three
technicians using a ground handling device
and pulley system with a safety harness to
maneuver the suits into the shuttle.
More than 6;500 pounds of equipment is
loaded on the shuttle for every mission.
That's equal to two tractor trailers, and fills
more than 40 lockers and spaces with bags
and containers in the mid-deck stowage
areas.
When the astronauts are practicing their
flight plans during the terminal countdown
demonstration test at Kennedy a few weeks
'before launch, Mann has to make sure the
seats, communication equipment and cables
are onboard for the mock launch countdo\w n.
After conclusion of the test, this all has to be
destom ed. repacked and readied for the actu-
al launch.
In the final weeks before liftoff. Mann
and his crew check and wrap thousands of
pieces of equipment. On any given day or
night before a launch, rows upon rows of
shelves in the Space Station Processing
Facility Lab at Kennedy are filled with thou-

sands of individually wrapped and tagged
bundles.
In addition, the group is tasked with
installing the three external tank cameras, as
well as' docking cameras, mini-cams and
other cameras for on-orbit use.
The most critical time is 11 hours before
launch, when the last few items such as fresh
food, personal items and science experi-
ments must be stowed on the shuttle.
The best part of my job," said Mann, "is
after launch and during on-orbit operations,
where we get to see the equipment that we've
stowed on the vehicle being used by the
crew."
On landing day, Mann's .team is at
Kennedy's Shuttle Landing Facility to
unpack time-critical items like the science
experiments that need to be retrieved quick-
ly from the orbiter. .

where the shuttle is taken after' landing,
Mann's group destows all the items, trans-
ports them back to the Space Station

them all on trucks for a return trip to
Houston.
As NASA 1orks to fulfill the nation's
Vision of Space E\ploration, Mann is look-
ing to support stowage needs for the new

Genetic modification turns plant

In this file photo released from the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural
Sciences, entomology professor Dov Borovsky checks petri dishes containing bacteria
genetically modified to produce a mosquito hormone known as TMOF Thursday, Feb. 10,
2005. The hormone shuts down the digestive process in mosquitoes and other insects, and
can cause them to starve to death. Borovsky and other researchers developed a way to
make crop plants produce TMOF as an environmentally friendly pest control method.

A study using the modified virus in
tobacco plants %was published today in the
journal Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences.
An extract from the plants was used to
kill mosquito larvae. The study was conduct-
ed by a research team that included person-
nel from LIF. the Unisersity of Virginia and
the Catholic Universit\ of Leuven in
Belgium.
"This is the first time \we know of that
anybody put on tobacco mosaic virus some-
thing that actually can act as an insecticide
and protect the plant." said Borovsky, lead
author of the paper. Tobacco mosaic virus is
commonly used in genetic research because
genes can be added to it easily.

lating oostatic factor, or TMOF, stops insects

Scientists plan to investi-

tions of TMOF, he said.
"TMlOF works against the

causes a lot of problems here in
Florida," Borovsky said.
UF researchers have pro-
duced genetically modified
alfalfa plant that generates
TMOF, he said.
:Because the weevil eats
alfalfa, farmers may one day
protect citrus trees simply .by
growing patches of the modified

crop nearby.
They could also introduce
the TMOF-producing gene into
citrus roots.
Tobacco mosaic virus might
be suitable for delivering other
insecticides. Powell said.
Similar \iruses that natural\
occur in other plant species
might also be modified for bene-
ficial use.
William Dawson, a UF emi-
nent scholar of plant pathology)
at the Citrus Research and
Education Center in Lake
Alfred, developed the method
used to put the TMOF-produc-
ing gene into tobacco mosaic
virus.
"The TMOF is really just a
prototype, there's man\ other
things we may be able to use
Bill's system to introduce into a
plant," Powell said.
"This is an example of
something that can be done that
may ha\e many different appli-
cations for many different genes
in many different plants."
The UF study is more evi-
dence that careful application of
biotechnology continues to cre-
ate opportunities for American
agriculture, said Mace Thornton,
a spokesman for the Amencan
Farm Bureau Federation in-
Washington, D.C.

For crickets, parasitic flies

can stop the music

By Aaron Hoover
UF

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -
Love hurts really bad, for
some unlucky crickets, anyway.
Male crickets draw not only
females with their songs but also
parasitic flies. The uninvited
guests then deposit larvae that
burrow into their amorous hosts,
grow for about a week and then
tear their way out in "Alien"
fashion, killing the cricket as
they emerge.
Now, University of Florida
zoologists have found that the
danger posed by the flies has
apparently affected when crick-
ets sing.
In experiments with
Southeastern U.S. field crickets,
known scientifically as Gryllus
rubens, they discovered that con-
siderably fewer male crickets
sing in the autumn when the par-
asitic flies are abundant.
They also found that female
crickets are reluctant to approach
singing males in the fall, perhaps
unknowingly avoiding becoming
the target of the flies themselves.
The findings, reported in a
pair of recent papers in the jour-
nals Ethology and Animal
Behavior, are of interest because
they shed light on the interplay
between the powerful evolution-
ary forces of sexual selection and
natural selection, said UF zoolo-
gy professor Jane Brockmann.
On the one hand, singing
and finding mates increases a
.male's reproductive success; on
the other, it also carries high
potential costs, Brockmann said.
"The interesting question is how
exactly do these conflicting pres-
sures play out in evolution?"

Scientists have known for
some time that parasitic flies,
known scientifically as Ormia
ochracea, deposit larvae on, or
near, singing crickets.
The larvae burrow into the
insects, then feed on nonessen-
tial organs within the cricket
while they grow. After they
emerge from the dying cricket,
they pupate and metamorphose
into mature flies.
Brockmann and co-author
Manuel V6lez, a former UF stu-
dent who earned his doctorate in
2004, hypothesized that the pres-
ence of flies would affect how
male crickets sing and how
females respond.
Examining wild crickets
native to North Florida, they
devised two sets of experiments
to test this hypothesis.
In experiments involving
male crickets, they gauged dif-
Sferences in male singing in part
by capturing males, placing them
.in containers in the field, then
recording them during spring
and fall.
They also surveyed free
singing males in a pasture during
the two seasons.
In North Florida, the para-
sitic flies are present only in fall,
never in spring. The researchers'
findings seemed to agree with
this schedule. More of the males
sang in the spring than in fall,
with 75 percent of the captured
males, for example, singing in
spring and 43 percent in fall.
To test how female crickets
respond to the flies, the scientists
captured and placed spring and
fall females in cages, then played
recordings of male songs and
observed their reactions.

FSU researcher's

musical pacifier

demonstrates

,amazing, results
-

Thanks to Jayne M. Standley and her
research into the almost magical power of
music, premature babies-often desperately
fragile infants-have unprecedented chances
to thrive.
Her work has led to the establishment of
most of the musical protocols used in hospi-
tal neonatal units today, including music for
weight gain, music for decreasing the severe
problem of overstimulation, and music fol-
lowing painful medical procedures.
With six out of every 100 births occur-
ring prematurely (less than 38 weeks' gesta-
tion), too-early birth is a critical health and
financial problem. Many music therapy pro-
tocols result in improved development and
earlier discharge for preemies.
Standley's work addresses the funda-
mental problem that preemies-infants born
before spending 34 weeks in their mother's
womb-are too neurologically immature to
be able to feed by mouth--either bottle or

breast-so they're fed through IV tubes.
Learning how to feed is crucial to allow them
to gain sufficient weight to thrive. StarIdley
found that music can help solve that prob-
lem. /
Her pioneering research showed that
babies too young to know anything about
their worlds, too neurologically irimature
even to grasp such babyhood basics:as suck-
ing, swallowing and even breathing in a
healthy rhythm, hear music and, often within
minutes, begin picking up clues for doing
what most babies do naturally.
Standley, for the past three decades a
professor and researcher at FSU's College of
Music, is recognized throughout the United
States as the foremost authority on medical
music therapy for people of all ages.
The recipient of the American Music
Therapy Association's distinguished
Researcher Award, the Lifetime
Achievement Award, and the Association's
highest distinction-the Award of Merit,
Standley was also appointed to the highest
research position in music therapy-editor
of the profession's premiere research journal,
the Journal of Music Therapy.
Standley's earlier research with full-term
month-old infants had revealed their ability
to learn, to discriminate and to show prefer-
ences between music and their mothers'
voices. Though born with neural networks
not quite ready for prime time, preemies also
have ample ability to discriminate and learn,
Standley found.
Researching the effect of music on pre-
emies, Standley found that they increased
their suckling rates 2.5 times when exposed
to music. More suckling means more weight
gain and better chances for survival.
Her research led Standley to develop a
musical pacifier device that has received a
U.S. patent and been approved by the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration.

HOMELESS from page 1

Snyder said the Homless leadership network
is trying to end this "revolving door" effect.
"One of the big challenges is to create afford-
able housing in a place where the market is unaf-
fordable," Snyder said.
The Homeless Leadership Network's new
plan is for a homeless person to move from a shel-
ter into a transitional housing phase, while finding
employment, and then into a permanent house -
not back on the street.
The county, however, is currently over 1,000
houses short in the demand for supportive housing
and over 300 housing beds short in transitional
housing.
Eradicating chronic homelessness in 10 years
is indeed a daunting task and will require more
than having more houses and available beds.
Many homeless people endure drug abuse
problems and mental handicaps which has caused
complications in finding or holding steady
employment.
The 10-year plan calls for money to be spent
on rehabilitation and counseling as well as job
training.

CRICKETS from page 7

Paralleling the result with the males; more of
the spring females approached the speaker quickly
and more closely than the fall females.
"The spring females are extremely eager. The
minute they hear a male singing, they race over to
the speaker," Brockmann said. "The fall females
are much more hesitant. They take longer and
seem reluctant to approach the speaker."
Brockmann said although scientists have
examined similar phenomena in other species such
as guppies, it is rare to observe obvious female
courtship behaviors. Female crickets, by contrast,
actually mount the males, so it is easy to know
what they are choosing. Also, she said, the com-
plete absence of parasitic flies in spring allows the
researchers to examine the role of flies as a selec-
tive pressure on male singing and female mate
choice behavior.
That said, not all of the findings were clear-

Homeless Services, said the need for services is
always present and a raise in wages is needed in
addition to affordable housing.
Butler has been involved with ASAP for eight
years and served on the board of directors for three
years.
"A person heeds to make at least 15 dollars an
hour to live in St. Petersburg," Butler said.
"If a condo or apartment building has 800
units I would like to see at least 25 of those be
affordable for the working population," she said.
"That just isn't going to happen when people are
making $6.50 an hour."
Oftentimes a person with no home tries to
apply for a job but they have no address to enter in
the "address" field.
ASAP provides clients with a mailing address
so they have a place to call "home" on a job appli-
cation.
ASAP is affiliated with the Homeless
Leadership Network and provides food and shelter
for 60 to 65 people everyday.
Are places like ASAP recieving enough fund-
ing?
"We are always looking for monetary dona-
tions," Butler said with a chuckle.

cut. Although fewer males sing in the fall, for
example, the ones that sing do so far longer, plac-
ing themselves at even greater jeopardy of being
parasitized by the flies. Brockmann said this may
reflect the presence of many more females in the
fall.
Also, many male crickets never sing, appar-
ently finding mates by simply walking around
until they encounter feniales. That raises the ques-
tion, why sing in the first place? Brockmann said
the answer may have to do with the subtle inter-
play between the densirt of flies,'the density of
crickets and the presence of other predators that
prey on walking crickets.
Walkers may do better when mates are abun-
dant and other predators are few, while singers
may have better luck when mates are relatively
rare and fly populations are low. "It might be quite
a. dynamic thing," she said.. "Some years, there's
selection against one, some years there's selection
\against the other."
