Democrat Bill Nelson is seeking to retain his U.S. Senate seat against challenger Katherine Harris.
. Democrat Bill Nelson is seeking to retain his U.S. Senate seat against challenger Katherine Harris.

By Carter Chase
Staff Writer
Candidates running for
office these days not on!y need
to pound the pavement, they also
need to maintain a presence on
the internet.
Perform Google searches of
political candidates, from those
seeking local council positions
to those running for U.S. Senate
seats, and you're bound to find
websites devoted to their cam-
paigns.
The following is a critique
of several websites of candidates
who are involved in some of
Florida's key races this election
season and who the favorites
might be if voting was based
upon the quality of those online
domains.
Florida Governor:
www.charliecrist.com vs.
www.jimdavis2006.com
Republican Charlie Crist's
homepage is full of links, which,
while neatly organized, don't
offer much insight into the site's
content. One of the first things
you might notice when visiting
Crist's website is the
"Countdown to Victory" clock
which shows the seconds ticking
away toward Election Day. The
site looks professional and is
pleasing to the eye, perhaps
because of its use of color which
is subtle, yet profound. The lay
out and color are what separate
Crist's site from Davis's site, but
only in regards to aesthetics.
Davis's site offers more
insight than Crist's site into cam-
paign specifics and Davis' main
page is detailed with more useful
information than Crist's. The
links are manageable and the
information is easily accessible.

Outcome: This is a classic
match-up of style vs. substance.
If you're a fan of style, Crist gets
the nod. If you prefer substance,
Davis has the edge. In this
important gubernatorial race,
substance wins out.
Florida Chief Financial
Officer: www.alexforcfo.com
vs. www.tomleeforcfo.com
Democrat Alex Sink's inter-
net home makes use of various
fonts and graphics to express her
platform. While there is no lack
of eye candy, all of the various
colors and logos do manage to
make the main page seem a bit
overwhelming, yet links to the
most valuable information are
easy to locate. One nuance of
her site is that the content is
available in both English and
Spanish.
As far as Republican Tom
Lee's website is concerned, it's
simple, clean and easy to navi-
gate. The main item on the
home page is a thank you note to
his supporters and links extend-
ing from the home page take vis-
itors to various pages describing
his vision.
Outcome: Tough call here
but we'll give it to Sink for tak-
ing Spanish speaking voters into
consideration.
U.S. Senate: www.nelson-
forsenate.com vs. www.elec-
tharris.com
Democrat Bill Nelson is
using his website as a tool to
broadcast a campaign ad, which
is what stands out most on the
main page. Other offerings on
the main page include links to
recent headlines and links to
photos from the campaign trail.
The site is user-friendly and easy
to follow.
Katherine Harris's website

uses the patriotic colors of red,
white and blue to enhance the
information contained on the

site. Press releases and news
stories regarding her campaign
are immediately available upon
arrival at the site and links are
provided to view photos and
make campaign contributions.
Outcome: All-in-all, the
sites are fairly similar, however,
the fonts used on Nelson's
appear a bit more professional,
thus making him the favorite.
District 16 Florida Senate:
www.charliejustice.com vs.
www.berfield2006.com
Democrat Charlie Justice is
another candidate using the col-
ors of the American flag to high-
light his web offering. His main
page is loaded with information
including the latest news regard-
ing current campaign issues.
There is a menu of links which is
easy to find and a there is a
rather lengthy statement that
runs down the left side of the
home page imploring voters to
support him.
Republican Kim Berfield's
website is well organized and the
main page, while lacking useful
information for voters, is invit-
ing and serves as an adequate
gateway to the rest of the site
where visitors will find a well-
balanced distribution of banners,
photos and news regarding her
campaign. The site is easy to
navigate and its use of the color
green, along with blue and white
give it a refreshing look.
Outcome: Berfield's site
possesses a rare combination of
style and substance which makes
her the pick.

Most of the country will see
winter temperatures above nor-
mal though slightly cooler than
last year's very warm winter,
according to the winter weather
outlook announced Tuesday by
the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA).
According to scientists at
the NOAA Climate Prediction
Center, who produce the out-
look, drought conditions also are
expected to improve in most
areas of the Southwest, while
some drought conditions are
anticipated in parts of the Pacific
Northwest.
The projections, based on
the last edition of the U.S.
Seasonal Outlook, were issued
by NOAA in conjunction with
the 2006-2007 Winter Fuels
Outlook Conference.
Weak El Nifio conditions
have developed in the tropical
Pacific and are expected to per-
sist through the winter, possibly
strengthening during the next
few months to an event of mod-
erate strength. However, this
event is not expected to reach
the magnitude of the very strong
1997-1998 El Nifio event.
"The strengthening El Nifio
event will influence the position
and strength of the jet stream
over the Pacific Ocean, which in
turn will affect winter precipita-
tion and temperature patterns
across the country," said
Michael Halpert, lead forecaster
at the NOAA Climate Prediction
Center. "This event is likely to
result in fewer cold air outbreaks
in the. country than would be
expected to occur in a typical
non-El Nifio winter."
The winter outlook reflects
a blend of factors associated
with weak to moderate strength
El Nifo events across the central
and eastern Pacific Ocean, com-
bined with longer-term trends.

From December through
February, the lower 48 states can
expect about two percent fewer
heating degree days than aver-
age but about five to 10 percent
more heating degree days than
last year's very warm winter. (A
heating degree day is used as an
indication of fuel consumption.
One heating degree day is given
for each degree that the daily
mean temperature is below 65
degrees.)
Seasonal forecasters also
expect warmer than average
temperatures across the West,
the Southwest, the Plains states,
the Midwest, most of the
Northeast, and the northern mid-
Atlantic, as well as most of
Alaska. Near-average tempera-
tures are expected for parts of
the Southeast, while below-aver-
age temperatures are anticipated
for Hawaii. Maine, the southern
mid-Atlantic, the Tennessee
Valley, and much of Texas have
equal chances of warmer, cooler
and near-normal temperatures
this winter.
The outlook for winter pre-
cipitation calls for wetter than
average conditions across the
Southwest from Southern
California to Texas and for
Florida and the south Atlantic
Coast. Drier than average condi-
tions are expected in the
Tennessee Valley, the northern
Rockies, the Pacific Northwest
and Hawaii. Other regions have
equal chances of drier, better r or
near normal precipitation. The
pattern of rainfall in the West is
expected to improve drought
conditions across Arizona and
Texas, but result in drought
across parts of Idaho,
Washington and Oregon.
The NOAA Climate
Prediction Center will update the
U.S. Winter Weather Outlook on
October 19 and again on
November 16, 2006.

New initiative launched

to promote healthy

forests in Florida

Florida Agriculture. and
.Consumer Services
Commissioner Charles H.
Bronson is announcing the
launch of a new public aware-
ness initiative: Your Forest.
Managed. This initiative teams
landowners across the state with
their county forester to ensure
the future health of Florida's
forests. This is the most com-
prehensive outreach in the
Department's Division of
Forestry's 79 year history and
will significantly influence the
shaping of Florida's privately
owned forests for decades to
come.
With Florida's population
expected to exceed 18 million by
2020, preparing privately owned
forest lands to accommodate an
upcoming record growth rate is
at the core of the initiative.
Currently the state loses 1,200
acres of forest land per week
with development expected to
grow by 40 percent during this
time. In addition, large acreages
of land formerly owned by one
individual are being broken up
into smaller parcels and sold to
multiple owners. This changing
of hands is introducing new for-
est land owners who may not
have the information necessary
to properly manage their proper-
ty. The increase in number and
variety of landowners has
required foresters to develop
innovative ways to communicate
with a changing and diverse

group of people-the overall
effort: to promote healthy land
management.
S Your Forest. Managed. is
designed to help Florida's coun-
ty foresters connect with the
landowners in the districts they
serve. The centerpiece of the
campaign has been named,
"OAK" which stands for
Outreach Action Kit. OAK con-
sists of a comprehensive
landowners' manual, brochures,
promotional items, displays and
an interactive website, all of
which are available in both
English and Spanish. These
tools are expected to help forest
landowners make sound deci-
sions when it comes to their
property.
"At the heart of this initia-
tive is a desire to assist Florida's
forest land owners by providing
sound counsel on how they can
best manage their land to meet
their individual needs," Bronson
said. "New landowners need to
know that the beautiful land they
just bought won't stay that way
on its own we can help."
Forests cover almost half of
Florida's total land area more
than 16 million acres and are an
important economic engine in
this state. Private landowners
own more-than half of that total
land and produce over half of
Florida's raw timber supply. As
the state's top agribusiness, the
forest industry has a total eco-
nomic impact of $16.5 billion.

UF experts: Decaffeinated 'Trapped wave' caused unexpected

coffee is not caffeine-free Dennis surge, scientists say

Coffee addicts who switch
to decaf for health reasons may
not be as free from caffeine's
clutches as they think. A new
study by University of Florida
researchers documents that
almost all decaffeinated coffee
contains some measure of caf-
feine.
Caffeine is the most widely
consumed drug in the world.
And because coffee is a major
source in the supply line, people
advised to avoid caffeine
because of certain medical con-
ditions like hypertension should
be aware that even decaffeinated
brew can come with a kick, UF
researchers report in this month's
Journal of Analytical
Toxicology.
"If someone drinks five to
10 cups of decaffeinated coffee,
the dose of caffeine could easily
reach the level present in a cup
or two of caffeinated coffee,"
said co-author Bruce
Goldberger, a professor and
director of UF's William R.
Maples Center for Forensic
Medicine. "This could be a con-
cern for people who are advised
to cut their caffeine intake, such
as those with kidney disease or
anxiety disorders."
Despite caffeine's wide-
spread use, most medical texts
have no guidelines for intake,
Goldberger said, but even low
doses might adversely affect
some people. So.UF researchers
set out to conduct a two-phase
study designed to gauge just how

much caffeine is likely to turn up
in decaffeinated coffees.
First they purchased 10 16-
ounce decaffeinated drip-brewed
coffee beverages from nine
national chains or local coffee
houses and tested them for caf-
feine content. Caffeine was iso-
lated from the coffee samples
and measured by gas chromatog-
raphy. Every serving but one -
instant decaffeinated Folgers
Coffee Crystals contained caf-
feine, ranging from 8.6 mil-
ligrams to 13.9 milligrams.
In comparison, an 8-ounce,
cup of drip-brewed coffee typi-
cally contains 85 milligrams of
caffeine.
In the study's second phase,
scientists analyzed 12 samples of
Starbucks decaffeinated espresso
and brewed decaffeinated coffee
taken from a single store. The
espresso drinks contained 3 mil-
ligrams to 15.8 milligrams of
caffeine per shot, while the
brewed coffees had caffeine con-
centrations ranging from 12 mil-
ligrams to 13.4 milligrams per
16-ounce serving.
Even though the amount of
caffeine in these coffees is con-
sidered low, some people could
conceivably develop a physical
dependence on the beverages,
said co-author Dr. Mark S. Gold,
a distinguished professor of psy-
chiatry, neuroscience and com-
munity health and family medi-
cine at UF's College of
Medicine.
"One has to wonder if decaf

coffee has enough, just enough,
caffeine to stimulate its own tak-
ing," Gold said. "Certainly, large
cups and frequent cups of decaf
would be expected to promote
dependence and should be con-
traindicated in those whose doc-
tors suggested caffeine-free
diets."
And even moderate caffeine
levels can increase agitation,
anxiety, heart rate and blood
pressure in some susceptible
individuals, Goldberger said.
"Carefully controlled stud-
ies show that caffeine doses as
low as about 10 milligrams can
produce reliable subjective and
behavioral effects in sensitive
individuals," said Roland
Griffiths, a professor of behav-
ioral biology and neuroscience at
the Johns Hopkins School of
Medicine. "More than 30 percent
can discriminate the subjective
effects of 18 milligrams or less.
The present study shows that
many decaffeinated coffee
drinks deliver caffeine at doses
above these levels.
"The important point is that
decaffeinated is not the same as
caffeine-free," Griffiths added.
"People who are trying to elimi-
nate caffeine from their diet
should be aware that popular
espresso drinks such as lattes
(which contain two shots of
espresso).can deliver as much
caffeine as a can of Coca-Cola -
about 31 milligrams."

Hollywood films portray biracial

couples negatively if shown at all

By Cathy Keen
UF
Despite growing numbers of
mixed couples in America,
movie relationships between'
men and women of different
races are most likely to be short-
lived, oversexed and downright
dangerous, a new University of
Florida study finds.
"A man and a woman of dif-
ferent races in the movies have a
greater statistical probability of
dying than of getting married or
dating seriously," said Nadia
Ramoutar, who did the research
for her doctoral dissertation in
mass communications at UF and
is now a communications profes-
sor at /Flagler College in St.
Augustine.
White women have not
appeared in an interracial rela-
tionship in a top-selling film
since "Pulp Fiction" in 1994, she
said. American Indian women
have not been portrayed this way
since "Dances with Wolves" in
1995, and the last time an
American Indian man was part
of such a union was in "The Trial
of Billy Jack" in 1974.
The findings are important,
Ramoutar said, because popular
films do' more than entertain:
They are a powerful means of
transmitting culture from one
generation to the next.
'The results of this study
sadly show that racial and ethnic
segregation in romantic relation-
ships is heavily practiced in
Hollywood blockbuster films
and has become more common
rather than less common in the
past four decades," Ramoutar
said.
The'study analyzed interra-
cial relationships in blockbuster
Hollywood films between 1967
and 2005, beginning with the

landmark social commentary
"Guess Who's Coming to
Dinner." Ramoutar selected the
15 top-grossing box office 'hits
of each year for her sample. Of
these, she found 36 films with
interracial couples.
Forty-two percent of the
women in such partnerships
were victims of violence. "Lying
on the table like a piece of sushi"
is how police described Cheryl,
the drug-addicted, sexually
deviant female character' in
"Rising Sun" responsible for
three men's deaths who dies her-
self.
The scripts use certain inter-
racial combinations more than
others and avoid some entirely,
the study found. No Arabic or
eastern Indian appears in any
film, for example.
The most common racial
coupling was a white male with
an Asian female, who was often
portrayed as a "model minority,"
in that she was smarter, more
compliant and less sexually
aggressive than women of other
races, Ramoutar said.
But while Asians were the
most common women of color,
representing nearly one-quarter
of interracial romances, Asian
men were practically invisible,
Ramoutar said. The only major
Asian male in such a relationship
in nearly four decades was
Jackie Chan's character in the
2001 movie "Rush Hour 2," she
said.
And a Hispanic woman
playing a CIA double agent who
briefly falls in love with Chan's
character marks the first time a
Hispanic female appears in an
interracial relationship at all dur-
ing those years, said Ramoutar.
Hispanic men also were
marginalized, cast in only three
movies, Ramoutar said. The

women they were paired with,
including Michele Pfeiffer's
'character Elvira in "Scarface,"
were drug addicts with no pur-
pose in life but getting high, she
said.
"Despite the large number
of'women actively employed in
the American workplace, the
most commonly portrayed occu-
pation of all the women in these
films is that they have no identi-
fiable occupation," Ramoutar
said. The second most popular
occupation was working as a
spy, followed by a fie between
prostitute and entertainer, she
said.
While white women in
interracial relationships came
across as either morally corrupt
or socially inept or as victims of
physical or sexual abuse, women
of color who become involved
with white men were often pre-
sented as erotic, exotic and pos-
sessing exceptional talents, she
said.
"(Chinese-American) Alex
in 'Charlie's Angels' is a sky-div-
ing, computer-hacking, black
belt martial artist who can defeat
a room full of men her only
misgiving is that she is a bad
cook," she said. "And Charlotte
Lewis' character in 'The Golden
Child' can leap over tall walls or
from high buildings, usually just
wearing Eddie Murphy's shirt
and her underwear."
The majority of black
women on the big screen were
pale skinned like Halle Berry,
with dark-skinned actresses
rarely cast except as villainesses
or femme fatales, she said.
Terry Francis, a film studies
professor at Yale University,
praised Ramoutar's choice of a
topic. "It might be the quintes-
sential American narrative," she
said.

When Hurricane Dennis
passed North Florida on July 10,
2005, it caused a 10-foot storm
surge in some areas along
Apalachee Bay about 3 to 4
feet more than forecasted- that
couldn't be explained only by the
local winds that conventionally
drive storm surge.
Now, scientists at Florida
State University and the
National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration
have found that the surge in
Apalachee Bay was amplified by
a "trapped wave" that originated
off the southwest Florida coast.
The discovery of this previously
undocumented storm surge phe-
nomenon has changed how
NOAA's National Hurricane
Center prepares storm surge
models for the Gulf of Mexico.
New modeling procedures will
help improve the accuracy of
storm surge forecasts for the
entire Gulf coast from Florida to
Texas.
Scientists Steven Morey,
Mark Bourassa, Dmitry
Dukhovskoy and James O'Brien
of FSU's Center for Ocean'
Atmospheric Prediction Studies

and Stephen Baig of NOAA's
Tropical Prediction Center of the
National Hurricane Center drew
their conclusions after conduct-
ing numerical experiments with
storm surge models. Their
research was published in the
Oct. 4 issue of the journal
Geophysical Research Letters.
Hurricane Dennis formed
from a tropical depression that
originated near the southern
Windward Islands on July 4,
2005. It strengthened as it trav-
eled northwest through the
Caribbean Sea until it made
landfall in Cuba as a Category 4
hurricane. It then traveled west
of the Florida Shelf, and the
storm's maximum sustained
winds weakened to. 54 mph
before it made landfall on the
western Florida Panhandle.
"Winds from Dennis forced
water against the southwestern
Florida coast creating a bulge of
high sea level from Naples to
around Tampa," Morey
explained. "Oceanographers
know that this 'bulge' will form a
long wave that, in the Northern
Hemisphere, will travel as a
wave with the coast to the right:
Because Dennis traveled nearly
parallel to the Florida Peninsula
coast at the same speed as the

wave, winds from Dennis ampli-
fied the wave as it traveled to
Apalachee Bay."
The trapped wave then piled
up on the shore along Apalachee
Bay on top of the surge generat-
ed by the winds over the bay,
according to O'Brien.
"To address these findings,
we will use as necessary a larger
geographical grid in our opera-
tional storm surge model in the
Gulf of Mexico," said Baig,
oceanographer and storm surge
leader at NOAA's National
Hurricane Center. "This will pro-
vide a more comprehensive view
of a storm's potential impact in
the Gulf by better accounting for'
the rare trapped wave effect."
This type of remotely
trapped wave could play a role in
future storms that follow a path
similar to Hurricane Dennis or
travel -westward south of the
Louisiana coastline toward
Texas, the scientists said.
Funding from a NOAA
Applied Research Center grant
supported the research. Wind
fields for the study were devel-
oped under funding by NASA
and the National Science
Foundation.

Central American fires impact U.S. air

quality and climate

Scientists using NASA
satellites and computer models
have shown that pollutants from
Central American biomass burn-
ing can influence air quality and
climate in the United States.
A NASA-funded study pub-
lished in the July 26, 2006
Journal of Geophysical
Research-Atmospheres found
that during April-May 2003,
large amounts of smoke, which
include aerosols -- tiny particles
suspended in the air -- from bio-
,mass burning in the Yucatan
Peninsula and southern Mexico
reacheded Texas, Oklahoma, and
'other areas"in the southeastern
United States.

The smoke plumes degrad-
ed visibility and air quality in
coastal regions along the Gulf of
Mexico and resulted in the great-
est concentration of small partic-
ulate matter in southern Texas'
since 1998. By blocking incom-
ing sunlight, the smoke plumes
also cooled surface air tempera-
tures over land. But higher in the
atmosphere the smoke absorbed
solar radiation and warmed tem-
peratures. This created a circiila-
tion pattern that trapped smoke
aerosols in the lower .atmos-
,phere, worsening air quality.
The researchers jed '
newly developed computer
model to simulate the transport

and effects of smoke in the
atmosphere and on the Earth's
surface. The model couples
aerosol properties with meteo-
rology and uses hourly smoke
emission data from the NASA-
led Fire Locating and
Monitoring of Burning
Emissions (FLAMBE) project.
FLAMBE is a .joint effort by
NASA, the U.S. Navy, the
National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration and
university partners 'to develop
smoke, aerosol forecasting mod-
els for the benefit for the global
weather conlununit.
