The Tampa Bay Devil Rays' brass of (from left to right) Principal Owner Stuart Sternberg, Executive Vice
President of Baseball Operations Andrew Frtedman, Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations Gerry
Hunsicker and President Matthew Silverman, embark on their second offseason. They'll try to turn around
the team that had the worst record in baseball this year.

woeful performances by the
team. gradually killed much of
the enthusiasm the franchise had
generated earlier this year, a year
in which attendance increased by
20 percent.
Toward the end of the sea-,
son, following the Rays'was like
having a tooth pulled, necessary
but painful.
..While many who follow the
team probably weren't expecting
a drastic upgrade over last sea-
son, chances are, very few would
have predicted a decline.
Heading. into this off-sea-
son, the franchise must once
again focus on reinventing itself.
This off-season, however,
investments must be made in
regards to player personnel as
opposed to enhancing the Trop.
Granted, while improve-
ments to the stadium and the cre-
ation of more fan-friendly
exhibits provided for a fun
atmosphere this season, one can
only imagine how much fun
could be had at One Tropicana
Drive if the organization could
field a more successful team.
In LF Carl Crawford, CF
Rocco Baldelli, RF Delmon
Young and 3B B.J. Upton, the
Rays have a very young, athletic
and exciting core group of play-
ers who,. more likely than not,
will give fans thrills for years to
come.
It wasn't long ago that these
names were the "future of the,
Rays." Well, the future is now

and the challenge facing the
organization presently is to find
the right players to complement
that nucleus.
Last offseason, millions of
dollars went into fixing the stadi-
um. This off-season, perhaps
millions should be spent on fix-
ing the bullpen, picking up a
solid defensive player who can
hit in the clutch, or finding an
above average starting pitcher.
The bullpen is in desperate
need of an overhaul. The Rays
set an American League record
this season for most losses after
holding a lead.
With the release of Travis
Lee, who was great in the field
but horrible at the plate, the Rays
got rid of the best glove they
had. They sorely need to add a
player who has a steady hand in
the field and can swing the bat.
As far as the starting pitch-
ing is concerned, the bottom line
is that the Rays need more of it.
LHP Scott Kazmir led the team
in wins with just 10. Somehow,
someway, the Rays need to be
able to get more out of its
starters.
Of course all of this seems
like the same old story and at
this point, there's little reason to
think that next year will be any
different. But that's the beauty
of it. There's always next year.
Here's hoping next year will
be better than this year. It has to
be, because quite frankly, it.
couldn't be much worse.

October marks seasonal

opening of community farmers'

markets throughout Florida

The. arrival of October
brings with it many special
attributes. Fall's cooler weather
offers a welcome break from
summer's sweltering heat.
Baseball fans eagerly await the
World Series to wind up another
season of America's Pastime,
while football fans are enjoying
a brand new season of exciting
gridiron action. Holidays are on
the horizon, and family get-
togethers are being planned.
In Florida, October brings
another welcome event: the sea-
sonal opening of many commu-
Snity farmers' markets throughout
the state and the kickoff of
SFlorida's fall fruit and.vegetable
harvest. Shopping at farmers'
markets is a growing trend in
Florida, and the number of farm-

ers' markets in the state has dou-
bled in the last 10 years.
Seventy-three community farm-
ers' markets are listed with the
Florida Department of
Agriculture and Consumer
Services. Half of Florida's 67
counties have farmers' markets.
"The increasing popularity
of farmers' markets is due to a
couple of factors," Bronson said.
"As people have become more
health-conscious, there's a grow-
ing demand for fresh, high-qual-
ity produce. And what could be
more healthful than produce
that's grown locally, often just
minutes away from your home?"
The Saturday Morning
Market in St. Petersburg is open
tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
-on Central Avenue between 1st

Street and 2nd Street.
People who shop at farmers'
markets enjoy fresh, wholesome
produce throughout the growing
season, while helping to keep
small farms viable. There are
also less obvious benefits: buy-
ing locally grown food con-
serves energy and other natural
resources, reduces air and water
pollution, preserves green space,
and helps build a stronger, more
close-knit community.
Farmers usually harvest in
the early,morning, just before
heading to the markets, so it's
only a matter of hours between
harvest and purchase. Produce
remains vital, intensely flavored,
juicy, and crisp. Nutrient loss is
minimal, so your food not only
tastes better, it's better for you.

IIore tan ootsUUL5, a screeIn ani a
bucket, scientists studying a tiny
primitive fish that makes up 70
percent of the biomass in Tampa
Bay now say they have found
the "missing link" marking the
point in evolution that led to the.
development of the moder-day
human immune system.
The inch-long spineless
fish, called a lancelet, produces a
key immune system protein that
is similar to but much hardier
than the version found in people.
The bay waters are a microbial
soup teeming with microorgan-
isms, yet the worm-like bottom-
feeder is remarkably adept at
standing up to the bacterial, viral
and chemical threats in its envi-
ronment. Understanding how it
does so could lead to improved
bibdefense and better immune-
boosting drugs to fight cancer
and disorders such as rheuma-
toid arthritis, say scientists at the
University of Florida and the
University of South Florida, who
reported their findings recently
in Nature Immunology.
"At a basic level, this sea
worm tells us about the evolu-
tion of the immune response;
specifically, it tells us that prim-
itive organisms have more
sophisticated immune systems
than we previously thought,"
said X-ray crystallographer
David Ostrov, an assistant pro-
fessor of pathology, immunolo-
gy and laboratory medicine at
UF's College of Medicine who is
affiliated with the UF Shands
Cancer Center. "This is the first
organism below the level of
jawed vertebrates that expresses.
the type of proteins we use in our
own complex adaptive immune
system."
The human immune system
is constantly at work, on guard
to tackle new ills while remem-

genes and proteins remarkably
similar to ours that enable it to
also skillfully elude attack.
S"This influences our thera-
peutic strategy because we must
consider that an organism we are
trying to target may have an
elaborate defensive system of its
own, with features that neutral-
ize what we're trying to do to it,"
Ostrov said. "For example, if
we're trying to create a vaccine
against a specific pathogen such
as anthrax, smallpox or bird flu,
we have to take into account the
defensive measures those and
other organisms might have."
Organisms such as plants,
fungi and primitive animal life
are classified as having an innate
immune system, which defends
against invaders by recognizing
predetermined patterns of mole-
cules. About 520 million years
ago, a different form of immuni-
ty emerged the adaptive
immune system, shared by
humans and other organisms
with jaws and vertebrae. This
type relies on an army of anti-
bodies and other immune system
cells to customize its response to
an array of pathogens and
remember the encounter for
future reference.
"We were asking the ques-
tion why and where did this
sharp division occur? What were
the most primitive organisms
that exhibit the molecules that
we use in our adaptive immune
systems?" Ostrov said.
"In this study, we have iden-
tified the missing link between
the innate immune system and
the adaptive immune system,
and we have found this link just
below the level of jawed verte-
brates," he said. "We found an

World Championships

The USA-Florida team
helmed by 2000 Sonar
Paralympic Bronze Medalist J.P.
Creignou (St. Petersburg)
claimed the B3 division lead on
the opening day of the champi-
onship series and never relin-
quished it. With visually
impaired crew Jan Bartleson
(Miami), and sighted guides
Colin Park (St. Petersburg) and
Patty Forrestel (Miami),
Creignou steered the team to win
seven out of 11 races to effect a
12-point lead over Great Britain
as the racers took to the waters
of Narragansett Bay for the final
day last week of the competition
in Sail Newport's fleet of J/22s.
USA-Florida claimed the
championship crown with the
addition of three first-place fin-
ishes to their scoreline, giving
them a 19-point margin over the
defending champions, GBR
skipper Gary Kirby (Falmouth,
Cornwall), visually impaired
crew Toby Davey (London), and
sighted guides Martin Moody
(Southampton, Hampshire) and
Ian Shirra (Rochdale,
Lancashire). GBR successfully
held off New Zealand's Eddie
Moree, visually impaired crew
Shannon Leslie (both Rotorua),
and sighted guides Brian
Trubovich (Auckland) and Tony

Poolman (Rotorua) who had
come within a single point of
overtaking after they won two
races on the penultimate day of
the championship.
"It is pretty amazing, espe-
cially here in Newport, at this
venue, the NYYC, it is very spe-
cial," said J.P. Creignou on win-
ning the world championship.
"We really had a group of people
who work well together and
were on the same page and we
had a good time together.
Having the right combination of
people is very important and of
course everybody worked really
hard. It all came together."
The vision classification of
the skipper determines in which
division each four-person team
is competing with the totally
blind Bls and the vision-
impaired B2s racing New York
Yacht Club's fleet of 23' Sonars,
and the least vision-impaired
B3s racing in Sail Newport's
J/22s. Regatta rules mandate
that only a blind sailor can steer,
while the other blind crew trims
the sails. Verbal information
provided by two sighted guides
allows the blind skipper and
crew to tactically position the'
boat as it navigates the race
course.

During the last offseason,
the Tampa Bay Devil Rays
developed the motto "under con-
struction" to promote the idea
that the organization was chang-
ing. After, a disastrous 2006
campaign, without question, the
slogan needs to be re-applied.
Having finished, the year
with a record of 61 wins and 101
losses, not only did the Rays end
up with the worst record in base-
ball and in the A.L. East base-
ment for the eighth time in its
nine-year history, the team failed
to improve on last season's mark,
instead finishing with six more
losses.
While the new leadership of
the Rays may have established a
different attitude and a different
way of steering the ship,iunfor-
tunately, the results on the field
hardly reflected those efforts.
S Sure, going to Tropicana
Field to take in a ballgame was a
more pleasurable experience this
summer with 'free parking,
improved amenities and a
brighter atmosphere. The fact
that the Rays finished with a
winning record at home made it
all the better. But the joyfulness
of'the experience began to lose
strength in the second half of the
season as the club repeatedly
returned home following losing
road-trips.
As the season progressed,

Fish, from 1
intermediate. We found an immune system that is possessing fea-
tures of both the innate immune system and the adaptive system."
In their most recent study, UF and USF scientists including
geneticist Gary Litman, of USF's Moffitt Cancer Center bombard-
ed a highly concentrated, crystallized form of an immune system
protein isolated from the fish with X-rays, yielding incredibly high-
resolution images of its structure. The lancelet also is known as
amphioxus, or by the scientific name Branchiostoma floridae.
"We were surprised not only by how similar the molecules are
to our immune response proteins but also that the crystals diffracted
to a level of resolution that no one has ever been able to achieve
studying these adaptive immune response proteins atomic resolu-
Stion," Ostrov said.
That means scientists can actually see where individual hydro-
gen atoms are positioned in the protein's core, providing clues as to
which atoms are participating in key stabilizing interactions.
Doctors often use infusions of antibodies to bolster immune
systems weakened by cancer or other conditions, but ironically,
these proteins are susceptible to enzymes that break them down. A
number of such monoclonal antibody-based drugs are in clinical
use, such as Herceptin for breast cancer or Avastin for colorectal
cancer.
The lancelet's immune response proteins, however, are
resilient. Understanding their essential architecture with such preci-
sion could lead to new, improved types of antibody-based therapies
that are better able to persist in the body, Ostrov said.
"If we cbuld take advantage of the atomic level structural fea-
tures that we see, particularly those structural features at the stable
core of this molecule, then we expect to design and produce more
stable monoclonal antibodies for therapy," he said.
The study was funded by the National Institute of General
Medical' Sciences, the National Institute of Allergy, Immunology
and Infectious Diseases, the Cure Autism Now Foundation and the
U.S. Department of Energy.
Dr. Neil S. Greenspan, a professor of pathology at Case
Western Reserve University School of Medicine, called the study
"captivating and thorough."
"However, I expect that further research will be required to cor-
roborate some of the key evolutionary interpretations and to place
this study in fuller perspective," Greenspan said.

USF transportation research

group gets $4 million

jousting

By Randolph Fillmore
USF
The University of South
Florida's National Center for
Transit Research (NCTR) at
USF's Center for Urban
Transportation Research
(CUTR) has been reauthorized
by the U.S. Department of
Transportation as one of ten uni-
versities to receive $1 million
annually as part of a four-year
designation through the depart-
ment's University Transportation

Centers (UTC) Program. A total
of 36 universities applied for the
ten grants. As in past years, the
grant will be matched by the
Florida Department of
Transportation.
"We are excited about the
opportunities presented by this
funding," said Joel Volinski,
NCTR director. "With it, we will
continue to support and add
value to transportation agencies,
professionals, and students as we
strive to help everyone in the
transportation community per-

form at their highest level."
CUTR's National Center for
Transit Research (NCTR) at the
University of South Florida was
originally established in 1991 as
the National Urban Transit
Institute and reauthorized in
1999 as NCTR.
"This successful competi-
tion assures our participation in
the UTC Program through
2011," said Ed Mierzejewski,
CUTR director.

Faith-based prison programs called

into question by FSU researcher

NASA photo by Tom
'F-15B research testbed aircraft with Gulfstream's Quiet Spike extended to 24 feet.

Early fighter pilots were
sometimes called knights of the
air, a reflection of medieval
times when knights used blunted
lances in jousting tournaments to
dismount competitors from their
horses.
Now, jet-borne jousting is
combating supersonic shock-
waves, hopefully enough to
lessen the resulting sonic boom
heard on the ground.
Gulfstream Aerospace and
NASA's Dryden Flight Research
Center have teamed in a project
called Quiet Spike to investigate
the suppression 9f sonic booms.
The project centers around a
retractable, 24-foot-long lance-
like spike mounted on the nose
of NASA Dryden's F-15B
research testbed aircraft. The
spike, made of composite mate-
rials, creates three small shock
waves that travel parallel to each
other all the vy-[0 t he ground:
producing less noise than typical
shock waves that build up at the
front of supersonic jets.
Before flying with the giant
spike, NASA Dryden engineers
and technicians, working along-
side their Gulfstream counter-
parts, mounted it on the aircraft
and conducted various structural
tests on the ground.
"The partnership between
Gulfstream and Dryden during
Quiet Spike installation and
ground testing on the F-15B ias

produced a wealth of valuable
information. The duration of this
flight test effort will prove to be
exciting and informative for
everyone involved," said Leslie
Molzahn, NASA Dryden's oper-
ations engineer on the project.
Since the' project's first
flight, conducted on Aug. 10,
2006, several more flights have
put the system's structural
integrity to the test before mov-
ing on to sonic boom suppres-
sion measurements. While these
tests'won't actually 'quiet' the F-
15's sonic boom, they will show
that the spike's design is capable
of use in a real flight environ-
ment. The flights are monitored
in NASA Dryden's mission con-
trol.
"Working with Gulfstream
has provided a significant advan-
tage to this flight research pro-
ject," .NASA project manager
Michael .Tehermat says. "This
project merges Gulfstream's
manufacturing expertise with
NASA Dryden's flight test
expertise."
Shockwaves develop
around aircraft as they near
Mach 1, or about 760 mph, the
speed of sound at sea level.
When an aircraft travels super-
sonically, the resulting shock-
waves can produce a loud sonic
boom that rattles windows and
nerves.on the ground under the
path of the supersonic jet.

Regardless of the defini-
tions and measurements used
and the manner in which find-
ings were presented, the review
found few studies that had gen-
erated data credible enough to
justify public support -- or out-
right rejection -- of faith-based
programming.
As an example, Mears cites
the Prison Fellowship
Ministries, founded by Charles
Colson, the former Nixon aide
who' became a born-again
Christian while imprisoned for
his part in the Watergate scandal.
Colson has touted the success of
his ministries based on studies
that show lower recidivism rates
among participants. However,
Mears noted that the studies
focused only on inmates who
completed the program, while
comparing its recidivism rates to
,those of all participants --
including dropouts -- of selected
secular programs.
In fact, if recidivism rates in
Colson's programs were revised
to include all participants, "grad-
uates" or not, results would be
worse than those for the compar-
ison groups. Where successes
might be construed to exist, it's
unclear what to credit -- the
computer, .and..life skills cjlases
;,or,,it fundamentalist Cjgriqan
doctrine. Where recidivism
increases among its program
participants, did faith-based pro-
gramming play a part by leading
some inmates to believe that ulti-
mate responsibility for their
actions lies with God, not them?
Like arguments that faith-based
programs decrease recidivism,
this possibility remains to be
demonstrated empirically.

NASA

opens 'door

to

exploration'

As the door is closing on NASA's Space
Shuttle-Program, another door is opening to
make way for the next generation of human
space vehicles: the Constellation Program.
The 50-foot-tall door at the west end of
the high bay in Kennedy Space Center's his-
toric Operations and Checkout Building was
opened for the first time in more than two

decades during a ceremony Sept. 26.
"We're gathered here today in recogni-
tion of the first, step in the journey," said
International Space Station/Payload
Processing Director Russell Romanella.
"This is truly a symbolic event. We have an
exciting future, and today we're really open-
ing the door to exploration."
Lockheed Martin plans to use the 40-
year-old facility to complete final assembly
and testing of the new Orion crew capsule,
NASA's next-generation human spacecraft.
The first flight with astronauts aboard is
planned for no later than 2014, and the Orion
capsule's first flight to the moon is planned
for no later than 2020.
Originally called the Manned Spacecraft
Operations Building, the five-story facility
was essential to the Apollo Program. This is
where the Apollo command and service
modules were inspected after their arrival at
the space center, mated and put through inte-
grated testing before transfer to the Vehicle
Assembly Building.
Later, the Operations and Checkout
Building was used for testing of Spacelab
science modules that flew on space shuttle
missions and International Space Station
trusses. However, the west door wasn't used
and hasn't been opened for the duration of
the shuttle program.
Space Florida .and Kennedy Space
Center worked together to begin transform-
ing the high bay into a configuration similar
to the facility's original concept. With assis-
tance from the Space Coast Economic
Development Commission, the state provid-
ed $35 million through .Space Florida to
bring Lockheed Martin to Kennedy, and to
use this facility as a factory for Orion crew
modules and service modules.
Additionally, the state funded a
$735,000 project to clean out the facility.
The Boeing Company's.Checkout, Assembly
and Payload Processing Services team
removed Spacelab facility structures and
equipment -- including 50 tons of structural
steel that was part of the test stands -- and
updated, inspected and reactivated the west
door.
"We are so proud that we were selected,
along with the entire Orion team, to be the
people who will be generating the next vehi-
cle that's going to take us to the moon, Mars
and beyond," said Lockheed Martin Director
of Government Relations, Adrian Lafitte.
"We're ready to open, and start our piece of
the project."
As the ceremonial scissors snipped
through the red ribbon, the six-paneled door
slid open with barely a sound, beginning a
new chapter in the storied building's rich.his-
tory.
Kennedy Space Center Director James
Kennedy, who was a sophomore at nearby
Cocoa Beach High School when construc-
tion on the building was completed in 1964,
noted the upcoming work on Orion helps to
ensure the center's future.
"We open these doors today to a bright
future," Kennedy said. "It is an '(Orion) fac-
tory.' What a great idea, for non-traditional
work to come to the Kennedy Space Center
to give us a bright future as we work this
challenging mission together."
