USF professor, Gary Mormino speaks with a Tiger Bay member.

By Jessica Klipa
Staff Writer
Gary Mormino, a professor
of Florida Studies at the
University of South Florida St.
Petersburg was the guest speaker
at the Suncoast Tiger Bay lun-
cheon at the St. Petersburg Yacht
Club on Tuesday. The topic of
his discussion surrounded his
most recent book, Florida: Land
of Sunshine, State of Dreams.
The book, which is about
the social history of modern
Florida, focuses on the conse-
-quences of--growth in Florida.
Some of the chapter headings

include "Tourist Empires and the
Invention of Florida: B.D.
(Before Disney) to A.D. (After
Disney)," "Old Folks at Home:
The Graying of Florida" and
"Wondrous Fruit and Bountiful
Land: From Farms to
Agribusiness."
In his speech at Tiger Bay,
Mormino gave a brief history
lesson on Florida, touching on a
few specifics he mentioned in
his book.
"We have evolved from a
sunbelt to a mega state,"
Mormino said.
:At--the--outset of the 20th
century, there were 500,000 res-

idents. The population was
much younger, with one in 50
having reached their 50th birth-
day. Now, 18 million people live.
in Florida, with many more
elderly residents in the popula-
tion. Back then, retirees would
have never dreamed of leaving
their family's in the north and
moving to sunny Florida. That,
however, is precisely what hap-
pened, according to Mormino.
In the 1940's, Florida was
the smallest state in the South.
"Florida was difficult to get
here prior to the 1940's," he said.
But World War II changed all
that, exposing the state to many
of the soldiers who thought they
came here temporarily.
"Every letter home seemed
to say that I'm going return,"
Mormino said.
World War II brought with
it changes that made living in
this great state possible.
"Florida is result of multi-
ple technological develop-
ments," Mormino said.
The three of the most sig-
nificant were air conditioning,
the process of eradicating salt-
water mosquitoes and interstate
highways.
"Air conditioning in so
vital, it's almost impossible to
imagine Florida without it," he
said.
Interestingly, as late as the
1960s, only one in five homes in
Florida had what we know as a

City officials broke ground for the new inter-
modal general aviation terminal at Albert Whitted
Airport lastFriday. '
The approximately 10,600-sq. ft. terminal
facility, to be built on the northwest corner of air-
port property, will feature airport and fixed-base
operator offices, passenger and pilot lounge areas
and second floor restaurant space with airport and
waterfront views.
The estimated cost of the terminal project is
$4 million, to be paid through a series of sources
developed by Mayor Rick Baker to include a $3.2
million interest-free .construction loan from local
aviation enthusiast and businessman John
Galbraith which will be repaid through a series of
Florida Department of Transportation grants;' a
generous donation of $400,000 from Mr.
Galbraith; and matching city funds of $400,000.
Construction is expected to take about a year.
In a November, 2003 referendum, 73 percent
of city voters overwhelmingly passed a measure to
preserve the city's general aviation airport. Since
that time, city leaders have focused on plans 'to
improve the airport and secure the necessary fund-
ing. Designed by airport users and the local avia-
tion community in 1999, the terminal design has
been updated to meet current standards.
"Residents have indicated their preference to

preserve our airport and we are pleased to move
forward with improvements for this unique sec-
tion of city property,", said Mayor Rick Baker.
"With the addition of this beautiful terminal, the
airport will open its doors not only to aviation
enthusiasts, but to the entire community at large,"
he added.
Additional airport projects include a new air
traffic control tower, master plan update, airfield
lighted-guidance signage upgrades, helipad relo-
cation, and an exterior hangar rehabilitation pro-
ject.
Albert.Whitted Airport is a general aviation
airport located in downtown St. Petersburg. The
airport records an average of 90,000 annual air-
craft operations and has approximately 200 based
aircraft. Originally operated as an airfield in the
early 1900s, the city named it Albert Whitted
Airport in 1928 after a local pilot who died during
a naval training mission. The airport served as
home base for the Goodyear blimps in the 1930s
and National Airlines began commercial opera-
tions here in 1934. During World War II, Albert
Whitted Airport also served as a military training
base and later was used as a U.S. Coast Guard air
station until that moved to St. Petersburg-
Clearwater International Airport.

Gas prices

drive

consumers to

find

alternatives

By Jessica Klipa
Staff Writer
Gas prices may be driving
people to find alternative forms
of transportation.
The Pinellas Suncoast
Transit Authority (PSTA) expe-
rienced an increase of almost 12
percent in March, breaking an all
time record of one million riders
in one month.
Within the next few months,
PSTA is planning a service
increase of nearly 10 percent
which is the largest single
increase in PTSA's history, caus-
ing some of the busiest routes to
have more customers. The com-
pany already began preparing
for a 50 tol00 percent increase
in the busiest routes and has dis-
patched 30 new buses, with 48
more buses joining by the end of
the summer.
Bob Lasher, the manager of
community relations at PSTA,
said that more people began
using the buses right after
Hurricane Katrina struck the
gulf coast, sending the gas prices
well up to three dollars or more.
"We didn't lose the ridder-
ship ve picked up after Katrina,"
said Lasher.
While other factors may
influence people's decision to
use alternative transportation,
gas prices look mostly to blame.
"It's an assumption, but a
safe one." Lasher said. While the
PSTA is happy to see more busi-
ness flood its way, Lasher said
that the prices for a bus fare are
here to stay for this year.
The cost for a monthly bus
pass with PSTA is $40 for unlim-
ited rides, for weekly it is $12,
and daily is $3.
For the summer, PSTA also
offers a special package for kids
at the cost of $25 for three
months of unlimited rides.
According to Lasher, this offer is
popular for kids as they go to the
beach, shop at the mall or work a
summer job. For some kids,
making only minimum wage is
the cheapest way to go in order
to save money from their earn-
ings.
But taking the bus isn't the
only alternative people are look-
ing into. Bay Area Commuter
Services (BACS) seems to be
seeing' an increase as well
according to executive director,
Sandi Moody.
"Every time, the gas prices
start spiking to point that people
get anxious, we see more inter-
est," she said.
BACS provides services

such as finding matches for car-
pools, arranging vanpools and
bus rides, or informing people
about the option of a compressed
Work week (working five days in
four) or telework (working from
home). BACS spans five coun-
ties helping customers get from
one place to another. Customers
choose to use alternative trans-
portation, whether it's to save "
money on fuel or avoid conges-
tion on the highways.
Last year, BACS experi-
enced a rise in August and then

again in September. The compa-
ny records show an increase, but
it is only speculation as to why
customers are choosing alterna-
tive forms of transportation. To
Moody, the increase seems to
point to fluctuation in gas prices:
When the gas goes up.drastical--
ly, people panic.
"A good indicator for us is
when our web site gets a lot of
applications," she said. Moody
calls these customers "choice'"
people because those who have
online access usually have vehi-
cles of their own and have decid-
ed to look for alternative trans-
portation. On the other hand,
customers who have limited
transportation often use the
phone to call in to make arrange-
ments.
The idea of finding alterna-
tie forms of transportation is
actually becoming more appeal-
ing to people, according to a
telephone survey conducted by
the Center for Urban
Transportation Research at the
University of South Florida. The
survey, which was ,conducted
throughout five area counties in
2005, was taken from individu-
als 18 or older that worked 35 or
more hours per week outside the
home. Twenty-three percent said
that they are now using an alter-
native form of transportation one
or more days per week, which is
up from eight percent in 2001.
People who used alternative
forms of transportation two or
more times per week showed an
increase by 12 from 2001' to
2005.
The survey also found that
one out of four commuters use
multiple methods of transporta-
tion. For example, if a person.
drives alone they tend to car
pool as well. If a person car
pools, they try to take the bus.
While various forms of
transportation are available,
sometimes people aren't sure
about attempting it for various
reasons, whether it's having to
stay late at work, having to leave
early for personal reasons or get-
ting that call from their child's
school saying that their son or
daughter is ill.
The Emergency Ride Home
Program seems to be effective in
easing some of those worries for
those registered with BACS. As
long as customers participate in
walking, biking, vanpooling or
carpooling, they can take advan-
tage of the program by getting
an emergency ride home.
"What I would encourage
people to do if they want to save
money, is to see what works best
for them," Moody said. "People
need to see their options before
they decide they can't do it."
Cost will vary depending on
what service the customer
chooses, according to Moody,
but a calling to ask questions is
free.
For more information, call
BACS at-1-800-998-7433 or
PSTA at 540-1900.

Navy Seaman Recruit Cyndi J. Sidell, daughter of Wendy J.
Ayoub of Largo, Fla. and Dennis R. Sidell of Largo, Fla., recently
completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command,
Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, Sidell completed a variety of
training which included classroom study and practical instruction on
naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and
shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on phys-
ical fitness.
The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations". This exer-
cise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in
the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior
attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each
recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the
core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly
"Navy" flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be
a Sailor.

current rank.
Devlin successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to
challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally.
Devlin and fellow recruits began their training at 5 a. m., by
running three miles and'performing calisthenics. In addition to the
physical conditioning program, Devlin spent numerous hours in
classroom and field assignments which included learning first aid,
uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-

training.
Devlin and other recruits also received instruction on the
Marine Corps' core values -- honor, courage and commitment, and
what the words mean in guiding personal and professional conduct.
Devlin and fellow recruits ended the training phase with The

Learn sign language with your
baby at Clearwater Main
Library
Babies, pre-verbal toddlers and care-
givers are welcome to attend sign language

classes at the Clearwater Main Library.
Classes are May 3 and 10, 2-2:30 p.m. You
must sign up, as space is limited.
Babies use signs as a natural communi-
cation tool. Using sign language enriches
child-parent bond, accelerates verbal lan-
guage and social-emotional development
and averts temper tantrums. Studies confirm
that babies who sign learn to speak sooner
than those who don't.
For more information and to sign up,
call 562-4970 ext. 5236.

Florida Blood Services
experiencing a drought of a
different kind
Florida Blood Services (FBS) is in crit-
ical need of O-positive, O-negative and B-
negative blood types. O-positive is the most
common blood type as FORTY out of 100
people has this blood type. O-negative is
SEVEN out of 100 and B-negative is only
ONE in 100.
"We have less than a one day supply on
our shelves." stated JB Gaskins, Vice
President of Donor Systems. "It is vital we
recover this inventory quickly as patients in
our community are counting on us. O-nega-
tive and B-negative blood types are harder to
recover as there are fewer donors in the pool.
'We are asking the public to respond to this
critical need by giving blood over the next
few days."
Blood donors can now schedule their
appointments on-line. Go to www.fbs-
blood:org and click on "make an appoint-
ment." Donors can make an appointment to
come to one of our 13 fixed site locations, or
search "find a blood drive" to locate a blood
mobile scheduled in their community. New
FBS donors \ill need to "create a profile."
Florida Blood Services provides for the
blood needs of patients at Tampa Bay area
medical facilities through the generosity of
volunteer blood donors. Over 750 donations
are required daily, due to the high quality of
medical care in Tampa Bay.
For further information, please call 1-
800-68-BLOOD.

The past week has been a tough one for 2B Nick Green and the
Tampa Bay Devil Rays. After losing two of three to the Red Sox in
Boston, the Rays were swept during their three game weekend series
in Arlington, Texas versus the Rangers. Following an off day Monday,
the Rays lost the opener of a three game set in New York against the
Yankees, their sixth loss in seven games.
Somehow, defying all logic, the Rays managed beat the Bronx
Bombers 4-2 on Wednesday despite the pitching staff's issuance of
14 walks to Yankee hitters.
Green, who began the season with just three hits in 33 at-bats may
appreciate the change in scenery as the Rays return to Tropicana
Field tonight to take on the Boston Red Sox.

Master.Gardener,

volunteers help keep

Florida growing

By Tom Nordlie
UFIFAS

April showers might bring
May flowers, but in Florida the
raindrops get a little help from
volunteers with the University of
Florida's statewide Master
Gardener Program who provid-
ed almost $7 million in services
last year.
April 23-29 marks National
Volunteer Week, and UF's
Institute of Food and
Agricultural Sciences is saluting
the state's' 3,900 active Florida
Master Gardeners, who hell res-
idents keep their lawns green
and gardens flourishing in 52
counties.
"Volunteers are the back-
bone of our program, and many
other UF extension efforts," said
Tom Wichman, state Master
Gardener coordinator.
Recently released statistics
show Florida Master Gardeners
contributed more than 387,000
hours of volunteer time in 2005,
doing everything from training
youth groups and staffing plant
clinics to identifying pests and
testing soil, Wichman said.
To become a Florida Master

Gardener, applicants must com-
plete a minimum of 50 hours!
training in horticulture, plant
pathology, entomology and othei
topics, then provide at least 5Q
hours of volunteer work thei.
first year. Some counties have
more rigorous requirements, he
said.
"The main prerequisites for
our program are the desire to
learn and the desire to share
knowledge with others,'!
Wichman said. "A background
in horticulture is nice, but it's not
necessary. We're more interested
in commitment than experi-
ence."
Volunteers often provide
some extra dividends to the pro-
gram by contributing their
expertise in other fields, said
Terry DelValle, Duval County
Master Gardener coordinator.
Volunteers also help raised
awareness of UF extension, said
Faith Alley, president of the
Columbia County Master
Gardener Program. A Master
Gardener for fdur years, Alley
said she was initially surprised
that many residents were
unaware of the services their
extension office provides.
