June Pendleton boxes up school supplies from A Gift for Teaching

The mood was grim among
volunteers at A Gift for Teaching

in Pinellas as they moved empty
shelves and carts that used to be
filled with school supplies. Now
that the organization has closed
its doors to teachers due to a lack

of funds, those empty shelves
will go to pay off the debt.
But it wasn't always that
way.
As a non-profit organiza-
tion, the free school supplies
store once lavished gifts of
papers, pencils crayons and more
upon eligible teachers.
"Our store has been a testi-
mony that people really do care
about teachers and their stu-
dents," said Alice Carter, the
executive director.
Since its inception in
October 2004, A Gift for
Teaching in Pinellas received
$700,000 in product donations.
"We think that's a very
worthwhile accomplishment,"
said Alice Carter, the executive
director of the organization.
"The only regret I have is that we
couldn't stay open."
But the will to stay open,
along with the product dona-
tions, isn't all it takes to keep the

place running.
A Gift for Teaching in
Pinellas maintained a low opera-
tional budget of $13,000 per
month, but the cash donations to
help pay the bills and replenish
basic supplies just weren't com-
ing in, said Carter.
But now that A Gift for
Teaching in Pinellas is out of ser-
vice, the need will only grow.
Currently, the state of
Florida is 45th in teacher/student
spending, according to Audrey
Perrott, the communications
manager at A Gift for Teaching
in Orlando.
"The idea of A Gift for
Teaching was to fill the gap
between the students that have
and the students that don't," said
Perrott.
Bronwyn Thomas, the com-
munications coordinator of A
Gift for Teaching in
Hillsborough knows all too well
how great the need is.

A Gift for Teaching in
Hillsborough services 75 out 115
schools in that county. The pro-
gram provides supplies worth
$250 every month to 2,000-
teachers who reach 60,000 stu-
dents.
"To keep it going for us, we
always had to let people know
that financial donations are
important," said Thomas.
While A Gift for Teaching
seems to be flourishing in other
parts of the state, Pinellas, so far,
is left without a replacement for
an organization dependent upon
community support.
According to Carter, A Gift
for Teaching reached 25 schools
with a little over 11,500 students
during the time' the store was
open. The goal was to serve all
46,000 students in schools that
had a population of 72% or high-
er registered for free and reduced
lunches.

With hurricane season still
three months away, the
University of Florida Energy
Extension Service (FEES) is
already gearing up for its annual
Hurricane Preparedness
Program.
Originally designed to
equip Tampa Bay area hotel and
motel owners and operators to
prepare for natural and man-
made disasters, the program is
now also open to homeowners.
It's not too soon to start
making plans for hurricane sea-
son, according to energy exten-
sion agent, Bert Henderson.
"It takes time to plan," he
said. "We want to start early
enough so that we can get mate-
rials in homeowner's hands so
that they can respond to emer-
gencies."
The Hurricane Preparedness
Program, which is scheduled for
March 22 from 7-9 p.m., will be
held at the St. Petersburg
College Epicenter, 13805 58th
St. N., Largo.
The program focuses on
educating homeowners about
gathering supplies to protect
their, homes, knowing what to
pack if they have to go to a shel-
ter and learning how to safely
care for the elderly and home-
bound.
The information also
includes tips from taking care of
pets to making homeowners
aware that money can't be
retrieved from an ATM and that
gas won't be available if the
power goes out.
Too often people don't think
about these things, said
Henderson, who would like to
prevent what he calls the "knee
jerk reaction" that residents have
to hurricanes if they don't pre-
pare.
"You should know where
you're going to go and know
how you're going to leave when
the Category.5 hits Key West,"
he said.

In the end, it all comes
down to saving lives, said
Henderson, who recalls the esti-
mated 1,000 deaths reported as a
result of Hurricane Katrina last
August.
Bob Pack, the general man-
ager of Ultimar Homeowners
Association, echoes Henderson's
call for hurricane preparedness.
In the past, Pack attended
the seminars offered by FEES
for hotel and motel owners and
operators and believes the infor-
mation to be useful for condo-
minium owners.
Pack particularly empha-
sizes what he learned from his
own experiences.
"What we're out to accom-
plish is not to board up windows
and remind people to move patio
furniture but it's to educate peo-.
ple to have proper insurance in
place," he said.
Pack said he has found that
cataloging properties and archiv-
ing building plans on CDs for
the insurance company is the
best way to expedite property
assessments after a hurricane has
hit.
What people don't know, he
said, is that without a record of
building plans, at least for con-
dos, it's almost impossible to get
permits to rebuild.
With that, he leaves advice
to homeowners to prepare a file
with important information such
as credit card paperwork, insur-
ance policies, and even a last
will and testament.
''No matter where you live,"
he said. "If you have a home,
those would be the things most
focused on."
Although Pack offers his
own information gained as a
general manager of a homeown-
ers association, the Hurricane
Preparedness Program is for
homeowners, tailored with perti-
nent information about evacua-
tion plans.

make reservations by March 15,

A few attendees of Tuesday's.forum regarding St. Petersburg's new waterfront park discuss the plans.
Besides the park, there are plans in the worls for a civic plaza to be located between the renovated
Mahaffey Theater and the site of the.new Salvador Dali Museum.

With construction of a new
waterfront park set to begin in
July, St. Petersburg's Downtown
Facilities Department hosted a
public forum Tuesday to give
local residents a chance to talk
about what elements they would
like to see.included in the project
that will revamp the area around
the site of" the old Bayfront
Center.
Among many in the crowd
of 75 or so who attended the
meeting at the Coliseum, were
supporters of Albert Whitted
Municipal Airport which is,
located adjacent to the land
where the park project will take
place. Numerous attendees who
chose to speak at the hearing
requested that city officials give
strong consideration to the air-
port when finalizing plans for
the park.
Don Morris, a resident of St.
Petersburg for 35 years, whd
keeps a plane at Albert Whitted,
highlighted the feelings of the
airport's supporters.
"You need to design these
things around the airport rather
than the airport around these
things," said Morris.

A rare feature that the park
will possess is the airport's con-
trol tower. Several speakers at
the forum asserted that the tower
should fit in with the park's sur-
roundings.
"It needs an adequate
design, something that fits in
with the marina, airport and
park," said Steve Lang of St.
Petersburg.
Bobbi O'Malley, another St.
Petersburg resident, offered a
suggestion.
"We had some dream some-
time that the tower look like a
lighthouse," said O'Malley.
Besides an attractive air
control tower, many people at
the meeting described their
wishes that the park have a
theme related to aviation and
that it include an observation
area for viewing of incoming
and outgoing planes.
"I'd also like to see some
way that older kids, teenagers
and families can use that park,"
said Ruth Varn, a city resident;
echoing the wishes of several at
the meeting that the park be suit-
able for children of all ages.
While some in the audience
expressed concerns about park-
ing and noise; the main concern
voiced was in regards to a poten-

tial amphitheater at the park.
Glenn Anderson, a St.
Petersburg resident, said that
having an amphitheater or some-
thing similar would be too dis-
.tracting for pilots.
"I too want to put a nail in
the coffin of that amphitheater,"
said Anderson. "That site is not
a concert site. As a pilot, I do not
want to be landing with noise
and flashy lights. I want to land
in a subdued area."
Jack Tunstill, chairman of
the airport's advisory committee,
was on hand at the meeting and
summarized what the airport
wants above all for the new park.
"We believe most strongly
in the feature that the park be
named Albert Whitted Park," he
said.
Tunstill added that the park
should be closed at dark but
remain open on The Fourth of
July and New Year's Eve for fire-
works.
The city will host another
forum in April in order to gather
more input from the public. The.
project is scheduled for comple-
tion in the summer of 2007.

warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance
in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills
and the core values of Honor, Courage and.Commitment. Its dis-

Tips for older adults: What
you can do to prevent falls
Falls are not just the result of getting
61der. Many falls can be prevented. Falls are
usually caused by a number of factors. By
changing some of these things, you can
lower your risk of falling.
Here, from the Pinellas County Health
Department, are four things you can do to
prevent falls:
1. Begin a regular exercise program.
Lack of exercise leads to weakness and
increases your risk of falling. Exercise is
one of the most important ways to reduce
your chances of falling. It makes you
stronger and helps you feel better. Exercises
that improve balance and coordination (like
Tai Chi) are the most helpful. Ask your doc-
tor or health care worker about the best type
of exercise for you.
2. Make your home safer. According
to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), about half of all falls
happen at home. To make your home safer:
Remove things you might trip over
(such as papers, books and shoes) from
areas where you walk. Remove small throw
rugs or use double-sided tape to keep the
rugs from slipping. Keep items you use
often in cabinets that you can reach easily
without having to use a step stool. Have
grab bars installed next to your toilet and in
your tub or shower. Use non-stick mats in
the bathtub and shower floors. Improve the
lighting in your home. As you get older,
brighter lights help you see better. Have
handrails and lights on all staircases. Wear
shoes that give good support and that have.
non-slip soles.
3. Have your health care provider
review all your medicines. Have your doc-
tor or pharmacist look at all the medicines
you take including those that don't need
prescriptions, such as cold medicines. As
you get older, the way some medicines work
in your body can change: Some medicines,
or combinations of medicines, can make
you drowsy or light-headed which can
lead to a fall.-
4. Have your vision checked. You may
be wearing the wrong glasses or have a con-
dition such as glaucoma or cataracts that
limits your vision. Poor vision can increase
your chances of falling.,,. ... :. ,

Pinellas County responds to
citizens' concerns about Fort
De Soto proposal
After receiving hundreds of emails and
phone calls from citizens expressing con-
cerns about the perception of "commercial-
ization" at Fort De Soto Park, the Pinellas
Board of County Commissioners this past
week voted to reduce the scope of proposed
enhanced services at the park and to reopen
the bid process for a new concession con-
tract.
During the board meeting, County
Administrator Steve Spratt thanked citizens
for their input and said that employees and
administrators have "put their hearts, sweat
and careers into preserving Fort De Soto
and they would never do anything that
would detract from the natural qualities of
this magnificent 1,136-acre property."
The new scope of services will be sim-
ilar to those already offered at the park,
excluding beer and wine, a trolley' service, a
full service restaurant and a boat ramp bait
store. Fort De Soto already has food ser-
vice, canoe and kayak rentals, a camp store,

frozen bait sales and beach inflatables avail-
able for purchase under the present vendor.
The current camp store, which is in a serious
state of disrepair, will be replaced with a
modular building.
Since the present vendor contract
expires in June, Pinellas County's
Purchasing Departmentwill readvertise the
new scope of services as soon as possible.
The vendors who bid on the original request
for proposal will be invited to bid again.

Pinellas County to increase
its number of shelter spaces
Pinellas County Commissioners
approved the retrofit of three elementary
schools at their Feb. 21 board meeting. This
will increase the number of shelter spaces.
available to citizens during the 2006 hurri-
cane season by a possible 1,800 spaces or
more.
A grant from the State of Florida
Department of Community Affairs will
reimburse the county for the purchase,
delivery and installation of hurricane storm
shield window protection at Fairmount
Park, Jamerson and Sanderlin Elementary
Schools in St. Petersburg. The one-time
State Shelter Retrofit Agreement grant totals
$307,680.
Until the retrofit is complete and spaces
are measured, Emergency Management
won't know the exact number, although it's
expected to be more than 1,800.
Emergency Management lists 68,949
shelter spaces in the county as of Feb. 21.
(Shelter spaces are determined by allotting
10 sq. ft. of space per person.) The three St.
Petersburg schools were the last three iden-
tified as retrofit for use as public shelters.

Runway extension attracts
non-stop British flight to St.
Petersburg-Clearwater
International Airport
St. Petersburg-Clearwater International
Airport is thrilled to announce that British
air carrier, Flywho, will launch its first ever
flight from the United Kingdom's
Birmingham International Airport (BIA) in
July 2006. They vill fly exclusively to two
destinations in Florida. In conjunction with
newly formed specialist tour operator, Go-
VisitAmerica.com, the Birmingham based
venture will offer non-stop flights to St
Petersburg-Clearwater each Thursday.
Airport Director Noah Lagos com-
ments, "The runway extension project is
already paying dividends even before con-
struction is fully completed. We have our
first success story with the announcement
that this summer, "the British are coming"
non-stop to Pinellas County. Certainly, this
is a milestone event for the Airport, the
County, and the Tampa Bay area. It marks
the beginning of trans-atlantic international
travel to our airport as a direct result of the
runway extension project. This new service
shows that our promotion of PIE as "Your
Gateway to Tampa Bay" has been well
received by the overseas tour operators who
know the popularity of St.Pete-Clearwater-
Tampa Bay as a destination."
Founder" and CEO of Flywho and
GoVisitAmerica, UK entrepreneur, Aden
Murcutt explains why his new enterprise is
so different, "I'm giving a real commitment
to the Midlands (Central England) which,
for too long now, has been underserved for
long haul travel, particularly to the States.
Each year around 1.6 million Britons travel
to Florida, with well over 50,000 people
owning properties there, yet the Midlands is
still extremely underserved for direct
flights. However, this will change in July
when I.welcome, my first customers aboard
and launch Flywho."
Flyu ho %t ill operate a 230 seat L1011-
500 Tristar aircraft with a mixed cabin. The
Silver cabin will offer the world's longest
legroom with a 38 inch seat-pitch. The
Gold cabin (business/premium) will house a
massive 45 inch pitch arrangement. Flights
will arrive at St. Petersburg-Clearwater
International Airport on Thursdays and
Orlando-Sanford International Airport on
Tuesday and Thursdays. Passengers from
England can book mixed routes for out-
.bound and return. Unfortunately, passen-
gers wanting to books flights from the U.S.
are unable to do so by regulation at this
time.
Customers wanting more than just
flights can book a variety of other services;
including accommodation, car hire, insur-
ance and advance tickets to some of
America's most exciting attractions, through
Flywho's sole sales agent,
GoVisitAmerica.com. The new tour opera-
tor specializes in packages throughout
America and assigns all customers with a
dedicated travel account manager to under-
stand their specific needs rather than using
traditional reservation agents.
Those interested in booking flights
from Birmingham, England to PIE can visit
either www.goyisitamerica.com or
www.flywho.com, or alternatively call +44
870 4999 767. For more information,
please contact flywho External Relations at

Packers lose nail-biter in

Class 5A Region Final 56 55

Left: Largo Packers center Charlie Lytle prepares to shoot as a Chamberlain (Tampa) defender closes in.
Lytle led the Packers in scoring with 16 points but threw an errant pass in the closing seconds that sailed
out of bounds and sealed the Packers fate.

Above: Alex Gerhard of the Packers tries to keep the ball away from a Chiefs' defender. He and Lytle
were a force inside for Largo as they helped control the boards.

Chamberlain's Brandon Jefferson goes up for a shot while being
guarded by Largo's Alex Gerhard.
Largo's Mike Helm can't get his hands on the ball as he falls to the'
ground with Chamberlain's Kylan Robinson. Helm finished with 14
points.

The Treasure Island Causeway is still closed for construction and is scheduled to re-open in July of
2006. The causeway, which will feature a new 10-foot wide pedestrian and bike path, will be available to
one lane of traffic each way until the bridge is completed in late 2007.

The Ted Williams
Museum and Hitters
Hall of Fame will open'
a new location at
Tropicana Field, offi-
cials from the museum
and the Tampa Bay
Devil Rays announced
last week.
The 2,300-square
foot museum will be
open only on days the
Rays are playing at
home. It is open and
free of charge to those
attending the game. The
museum will open two
hours before game time
and remain open
through the end of the
game.
The museum's
grand opening will be
celebrated on Monday,
April 10 when the Rays
begin their home season
against the Baltimore
Orioles.
"We are pleased to
begin an affiliation with
an institution that for 11
years has entertained

and educated baseball
fans of all ages, and has
conducted a highly suc-
cessful community out-
reach program," said
Rays President Matt
Silverman. "At the
same time, we are
delighted to offer our
fans another popular
attraction at Tropicana
Field."
For the 2006 sea-
son, the Rays have
already announced that
parking will be free at
all home games. The
team has also lowered
its average ticket price
from a year ago and is
increasing the number
of promotional dates on
the schedule and the
number of items they
will be giving away.
