Midtown gets

new expanison

Euro-Bake owner and manager Harty Gerhard speaks at the grand opening ceremony of the 54,000
square foot facility in Midtown as St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker, Gerhard's wife, and his associates
look on, The expansion into the new facility will double the work force in the'next few years and brig
additional private investment to the Midtown area. The bakery is located in the Dome Industrial area of
the city, a section that has experienced a decrease in production in the past few years.

Euro-Bake, a wholesale
German bakery, opened its new
$9 million facility in Midtown
on Monday; Feb. 6. Mayor'Rick
Baker, city and business officials
were on hand for the ribbon cut-
ting and the grand opening cere-
mony at the new facility.
Located at 1962 Third Ave.
S. in St. Petersburg, the 54,000-
square-foot building is more
than twice as large as the com-
pany's old facility across the.
street. The expansion allows the'
company to double its work
force in the next three years to,
150 employees and bring addi-
tional private investment to the
Midtown area.
"Today we are continuing
the progress to revitalize this
integral part of St. Petersburg
and proving that businesses that
locate in (Midtown will be suc-
cessful," said Baker during
opening remarks of the ceremo-
ny.
Baker called the expansion
a "double win." It is a big win

because we were able 'to save
and expand the business, he said.
Euro-Bake, which wanted to
expand three years ago, had
plans to move to Bradenton. It
was also a win to go from a pos-
'sibility of losing a company with
70 employees to having a com-
.pany that will double its work
force in a few years, he said.
The city helped Euro-Bake
acquire a city block corer from
its existing factory. The city got
an option on half the block and
the bakery got the other half.
The city sold the land to the bak-
ery. It cost the 'city about
$100,000.
That is something that the
company's owner and president
Harty Gerhard is grateful for. He
thanked the city officials on their
efforts to help expand his busi-
ness and encouraged other ven-
dors to come down and rebuild
the area of Midtown.
The new facility .is located
in what is known as Dome
Industrial, a business area in
Midtown that saw decrease in
business production five years,

Euro-Bake currently pro-
duces 18,000 to 20,000 cases of
164 different baked goods a
week, working three shifts to
meet the demands of customers
like Walt Disney World, Cisco,
and hotels such as the
Renaissance Vinoy Resort in St.
Petersburg.
The bakery makes its bread
products from scratch daily but
imports about 25 percent of what
it sells from Germany, home
country to the Gerhards. The
company has recipes it brought
from Germany but also has a
master baker who does research'
and development.
The Euro-Bake's goods are
also exported to accounts as far
away as Hawaii and Costa Rica.
The new structure will feature
state-of-the-art baking equip-
ment and refrigerated storage
facilities.
The company was created
in 1993 with just three employ-
ees. Gerhard founded the bakery
because he wanted to reproduce
the fine baked goods he enjoyed
growing up in his native
Germany.

'This is the third part in our series
exploring the rise to prominence of eBay
Inc. Our first installment highlighted
what ebay.com and how it works. The
next week, we explored the company's
2005 financial report which indicated
that it has experienced strong financial
growth as of late. This week, we take a
brief look at what a couple web-based
financial forecasters have to say for those
wanting to invest in the ecommerce com-
pany.

Thinking of investing in eBay?
Perhaps now isn't such a bad time.
Investment bank and financial
research firm, Friedman, Billings,
Ramsey Group Inc, based in Arlinton,
Va., recently (Jan. 19) announced a posi-
tive analysis of eBay Inc. saying that it is
outperforming the market.
Indeed, eBay appears to be on a roll
as of late. Back on September 8, 2005,
InvestorGuide.com named eBay its Stock
of the Day.
At the time, eBay was in talks to buy
Luxemborg based Skype Technologies
SA, which, according to InvestorGuide,

is "the world's fastest-growing Internet
communication offering."
Skype's software allows consumers
to make free voice and yideo calls around
the world via the Internet.
Ebay, took hold of the company and
this past Wednesday, InvestorGuide.com
reported that Skype and Intel Corporation
are working together to enhance the qual-
ity of voice and video on the Internet and
that the first result of their collaboration
is the availability of free, ten-way voice
conference calling over the Internet that
comes with various Intel products.
It's with the expectation of similar

advancements to come that eBay's
investors are banking on the company
being a solid bet.
Prior to purchasing Skype, eBay had
pretty much limited itself to simply
developing its auction sites. As of late,
however, the company has been looking
to expand into new product areas and
international markets, something
InvestorGuide labeled "a dramatic strate-
gy shift."
In our next story regarding eBay,
we'll explore what that shift may entail
for the company, its investors and the
future of ecommerce.

Child Passenger Safety Week
is February 12-18: Car seats
must be used correctly
Motor vehicle crashes are the Numberl
killer of children ages 1-14. Recent studies
indicate that in most casep, injuries and
deaths were a result of improper use of car
eait,;"b6bost&r seats and `sat belts. 'It's
important to note that you aren't assured
protection just by having a car seat for your
child. Here, from the Pinellas County
Health Department, are some basic rules
that must be followed:
Children 12 and under should always
ride in the back seat. This cuts their risk of
death by 36 percent.
Children should be in a car seat until
they reach 40 pounds and a booster until
they can be seated properly in a seatbelt. For
most kids, this is around eight years old or
4' 9" tall.
Never place a rear-facing car seat in the
front seat of a vehicle.
Keep your baby in rear-facing car seat
until at least one year of age and 20-35
pounds. Many infant car seats have an upper
weight limit of 35 pounds.
All new car seats pass government
safety standards. Select the car seat that best

fits your child, your vehicle and your bud-
get.
Always read the owner's manuals for
your vehicle and for the car seat you choose.
They contain specific information about car
seat installation that may be unique for your
vehicle.
Make sure that the harness fits snug on.
your child, the car seat fits snugly in your
vehicle, and that your vehicle seatbelts are'
locked properly.
When you buy a car seat, make sure it
can be returned if it doesn't fit. Have your
seat inspected by a certified technician at no
cost. In Pinellas, call 892-KIDS for a sitting
station in your area.
Avoid secondhand car seats*, especial-
ly those over 6 years old or those with an
unknown history that may have been dam-
aged in-a crash.
Always give driving your complete
attention and wear your own seat belt!

NOTE: Secondhand car seats may be
okay, but you need to check a few details. It
is okay to use a hand-me-down car seat if:

SIt has never been in a crash. That
means you should only accept a used seat
from a family member or close friend not
from a garage sale or secondhand store,
because you can't be sure of its history.
Insurance companies and car seat manufac-
turers do not accept responsibility for car
seats that have been previously involved in
a crash.
It is less than six years old or has not
reached the expiration date stamped on it.
SYou have the instructions or you can
get a copy from the manufacturer by calling
the toll-free number stamped on the seat.
-All of the original parts and labels are
present. Check the seat against the instruc-
tions.
There are no recall notices saying you
should not use that model or, if there are
recalls advising specific repairs, the repairs
have been made and documented. To find
out, check at www.recalls.gov or call 888-
327-4236.
.It is the appropriate type of seat for
your child based on age, weight and height.
Babies and toddlers should ride in a car seat
until at least 40 pounds; older kids should
ride on a booster seat until at least 4'9" tall
and 80 to 100 pounds.
All children under 13 should always
ride in the back seat. :. .
The Pinellas County Health
Department's Child Passenger Safety
Program offers technical guidance and edu-
cation to residents and visitors of Pinellas
County regarding the safest practice for
transporting children in all types of motor
vehicles.
The program includes a 2 1/2-hour
training session that covers common misuse
and proper, installation. The program is led
by a Technician/Instructor certified by the
National High\\a. Traffic and Safety
Administration. The training is available to
anyone seeking information on proper safe-
ty seat usage. Low-cost safety seats are
available to those meeting financial guide-
lines. Personal consultations are also offered
to those unable to attend a training session
but who would like to have their child safe-,
ty seat installation checked.
It's always a good idea to have a car
seat inspected by a Child Passenger Safety

(CPS) technician, and the service is free. In
Pinellas County, call (727) 892-KIDS
(5437) to arrange for car seat inspection or
to find out more about the health depart-
ment's CPS program. You may also visit
www.pinellashealth.com for more informa-
tion about the CPS (car seat) program.

electric sens

Sharks are known for their almost uncanny
ability to detect electrical signals while hunting and
navigating.
Now researchers have traced the origin of those
electrosensory powers to the same type of embryon-
ic cells that gives rise to many head and facial fea-
tures in humans.
The discovery, reported by University of
Florida scientists in the current edition of Evolution
& Development, identifies neural crest cells, which
are common in vertebrate development, as a source
of sharks' electrical ESP.
It also fortifies the idea that before our early
ancestors emerged from the sea, .they too had the
ability to detect electric fields.
"Sharks have a network of electrosensory cells
that allows them to hunt by detecting'electrical sig-
nals generated by prey," said Martin Cohn, a devel-
opmental biologist with the departments of zoology
and anatomy and cell biology and the UF Genetics
Institute. "That doesn't mean they can only detect
electric fish. They can sense electricity generated by
a muscle twitch, even if it's the weak signal of a
flounder buried under sand."
Likewise, sharks are widely thought to use the
Earth's magnetic field for navigation, enabling them
to swim in precise paths across large expanses of
featureless ocean, Cohn said.
"If you think of this in the big picture of evolu-
tion of sensory systems, such as olfaction, hearing,
vision and touch, this shows sharks took a pre-exist-
ing genetic program and used it to build yet another
type of sensory system," Cohn said.,
UF and University of Louisiana researchers
analyzed electroreceptor development in the
embryos of the lesser spotted catshark, an.animal

that is largely motionless during the day and hunts
at night, mainly in the seagrass beds of the eastern
Atlantic Ocean.
.Using molecular tests, scientists found two
independent genetic markers of neural crest cells in
the animal's electricity-sensing organs. Analysis
shows these cells migrate from the brain and travel
into the developing shark's head, creating the
framework for the electrosensory system a previ-
ously unknown function of a much-studied group of
cells, according to Renata Freitas, a doctoral candi-
date in the zoology department and first author of
the paper.
The process mirrors the development of the lat-
eral line that allows fish to mechanically sense their
environment, and organs of the inner ear that enable
people to keep their balance. But scientists suspect
as human ancestors'emerged from the sea, they dis-
carded their lateral lines as well as their ability to
sense electrical fields.
"Our fishy ancestors had the anatomy for it,"
said James Albert, a former UF biologist who is now
at the University of Louisiana. "You can imagine
how valuable this system would be if you were
aquatic, because water is so conductive. But it does-
n't work on land air'doesn't conduct electricity as
well. When it happens, it's called a lightning bolt
and you don't need special receptors to sense it."
All primitive animals with backbones could
sense electricity, according to Michael Coates, an
associate professor of organismal biology arid
anatomy at the University of Chicago. Mammals,
reptiles and birds lost the sense over time, as did
most fish alive today.
But in sharks and a few other species, such as
sturgeons and lampreys, electrosensory capability

endured.
"Most fish you 'see today have large eyes,"
Coates said. "But sharks are predators that do not
particularly rely on vision. If you see a hammerhead
shark searching for flatfish, it moves its head back
and forth, almost as if it were using a metal detector.
Knowing that the electrosensory system may have
developed with involvement of neural crest cells is
valuable for people trying to reconstruct vertebrate
evolution. It gives us further indication of how all of
the various sensory systems come on line."
But the idea that the neural crest truly is the
source of the electrosensory system will raise eye-
brows, scientists say.
"It's a very interesting paper for two reasons,"
said Glenn Northcutt, a distinguished professor of
neuroscience at the University of California, San
Diego, and a leading expert in vertebrate neurobiol-
ogy. "For the first time, someone has shown which
molecules may be responsible for guiding the devel-
opment of the receptors of the lateral line system. I
think this will hold true and is a very important find-
ing. But I'm skeptical about the claim the neural,
crest gives rise to electroreceptors. It still requires a
definitive experiment, where the developing neural
crest cells are marked with dye, the embryo devel-
ops and the dye clearly shows up in the electrore-
ceptors."
Dye tests are a classical way of mapping cell
movements during development, and have been
used to explore the origins of limbs and brain cells.
In the current research, scientists used genetic mark-
ers to trace neural crest cells.
"Dye labeling would be interesting and further
test the idea that electroreceptors contain neural
crest cells," Cohn said.

Rays, Earthwatch team up I

for unique pilot partnership IT .a"

S The Tampa Ba\ Devil Rays and the
Earthwatch Institute in NMa.nard, Massachusetts,
are teaming up to provide a unique opportumtr
for six teachers from Pinellas and Hillsborough
Counties, it was announced Tuesday.
The Rays will make a contribution to the
Earthwatch Institute, awarding six teachers a:
once-in-a-lifetime chance to work alongside lead-
ing field scientists on fascinating research expedi-
tions in North, and South America. The partner-
ship with Earthwatch is the first involving a pro-
fessional sports franchise.
"Research expeditions and baseball might
seem to be an unlikely alliance, but \e feel it is a
creative \'wa of rewarding some very deserving
heroes." said Ra.s President Matt Silverman. "We
will continue to seek ways where we can use our
platform to promote educational initiatives."
"This program w ill pro ide a rare opportuni-
ty for our teachers to gain practical field experi-
ence in their field of study, and bring that experi-
ence back to the classroom through their school
grants." said Terry Boehm. President of the
Pinellas Education Foundation. .
"We value environmental education and
there's no substitute for hands-on learning in pro-
viding a lasting impact with youngsters. We wel-
come the opportunities which the Rays and
Earthw'atch are providing our teachers and stu-
dents." said Bill Hoffman, Hillsborough
Education Foundation President.
K-12 teachers from the Pinellas and
Hillsborough County school systems will apply
directly to Earthwatch, and the six winners will be
chosen on the basis of their ability to make the
most of their expedition experience and apply it to
future curricula.
Applications are being accepted until March:
15. For an application and more information con-
tact EducationAwards@earthwatch.org, (800)-
776-01-88 ext. 118, or

htrp:// www.earthwatch.org/education/.
The six selected teachers can choose among
several projects ranging from conserving the
Pantanal in Brazil to studying climate change at
the Arctic's Edge in Manitoba, Canada. The
teacher's school will also receive $2500, with the
funds administered .by th'e Pinellas and
Hillsborough Education Foundations, respective-
ly. The winners will be recipients of; the Rays
Environmental Education Award which will be
presented at a home game at Tropicana Field this
season.
"This is. a fabulous opportunity for teachers
from the Tampa/St. Petersburg area," said Dr.
Alan Fortescue, Director of Education at
Earthwatch. "The Rays are making an important
step toward improving science education in their
community and setting a valuable example for
other socially minded sports teams.".
"The Earthwatch experience changes lives
and adds a whole new perspective with hands-on
science and discovery," said Carly Johnston,
Earthwatch's volunteer Field Representative for
Tampa, and veteran of an Earthwatch black rhino
project in Kenya., "It would be great if other orga-
nizations throughout the nation (and world) would
follow in tie footsteps of.what the Devil Rays are
doing for Tampa Bay teachers."
Over the past 35 years,, more than 4,000
teacher fellows have received training and inspi-
ration on Earthwatch expeditions. Earthwatch
Fellowships offer teachers professional, develop-
ment and a renewed appreciation for learning.
Many teachers apply the Earthwatch model for
research to local conservation projects when they
return from their experience. Classrooms across
the nation also benefit from the Earthwatch "Live
from the Field" program, where students can fol-
low the adventures of teachers in the field through
the latest in communication technologies.
