City officials and develop-
ers broke ground on a new $5
million business venture in St.
Petersburg's Midtown on
Tuesday, Jan. 24.
Twin Brooks Commons
Plaza,. a 26,400-square foot
shopping center on the corner of

34th Street and 22nd Avenue S,
is scheduled to be finished in
June, officials say.
A Quiznos .sub shop,
Cingular Wireless, and Advance
America, a cash advance service
are already signed tenants in the
new plaza. Additional restaurant
and an anchor tenant such as an
office supply store are being
sought.

The project is to bring a new
image to Midtown and help pro-
mote the seamless city, some-
thing that Mayor Rick Baker
strives for.
"Our objective is to make
St. Petersburg a seamless city,"
said Baker, under whose term
Midtown received a .major
makeover.
Baker called the new plaza,

formerly a vacant grocery store,
an adult store and billboards
advertising bail services, another
step in Midtown's economic
revival.
"The project is moving for-
ward, there's money in the bank
and there's no doubt it's going to
happen," said Goliath Davis,
deputy mayor for Midtown.
Twin Brooks Commons,
named for a neighborhood few
blocks east, is the largest
Midtown development since
Sweetbay Supermarket complex
opened.last fall at 22nd Street
and 18th Avenue S.
"Until someone is willing to
put dollars in their community
and take a risk, nothing hap-
pens," said Baker thanking both
Twin Brooks Commpns LLC
and ,B&P Development Group
for making the project happen.
Baker also expressed the
need for the communication
between the developers and the
community. He said that devel-
opers need to have a clear pic-
ture what the neighborhood
wants out of the new plaza in
Midtown, the 5.5-square-mile
area located just south of down-
town bounded by Second
Avenue N and 30th Avenue S
between Fourth Street and 34th

Street S.
During the planning stages
for the the plaza, city staff from
the Development Services,
Economic Development, and
Midtown Economic
Development departments
assisted with the site plan review
process and approvals, business
relocation and business recruit-
ment.
This project adds to the "big
three" things Midtown residents
indicated the area needed during
the Midtown Strategic Planning
Initiative focus groups and com-
munity meetings back in 2001.
The new Midtown Station Post
Office opened in October fol-
lowed by a new Sweetbay gro-
cery store in November and a
new bank will soon be under
construction. The Job Corps
training center, 16-acre tract at
22nd Street and Second Ave S, is
a $23-million project expected
to bring 300 job-training slots
and significantly, redevelop a
chunk of the Dome Industrial
Park.
"We welcome this develop-
ment another in a series of
ongoing business successes in
the Midtown community," said
Baker.

Staff Writer
This is the second part in our series dedicat-
ed to exploring the growth of eBay Inc.. and the
rise in popularity of e-commerce. Our first
installment highlighted what ebay.com is and how
it works. This week, the Pinellas News further
explores the magnitude of eBay, Inc. by taking a
look at the company's 2005financial results which
were released on January 18. In exploring the
numbers, the figures offer insight into how eBay
has become an online business giant.
iInformation contained in eBay Inc.'s 2005
financial report indicates that the San Jose, Calif.
based company experienced a decent amount of
economic success last year.; The numbers dis-
played in the chart below show a sharp increase in
economic activity and the statistics reveal that
there has been plenty of momentum in the rise in
popularity of eBay and its services during the past
year.
For the full year ended on December 31,
2005, consolidated net revenues totaled a compa-
ny record $4.552 billion which represented an
increase of 39 percent from the $3.217 billion
reported in the full year 2004.
That increase in profit is correlated with the
increase in the number of eBay listings in the full
year 2005. Income is generated by eBay from fees
it applies to users who list their offerings on the
company's websites. Listings last year totaled a
record 1.9 billion which is 33 percent higher than
the 1.4 billion listings reported in the full year

2004.
The increase in the number of listings sug-
gests a rise in the popularity of eBay. In fact, it
can be seen in comparing the company's active
user stats for the fourth quarter of 2005 with those
from the fourth quarter of 2004 that more people
are using eBay these days.
During the last quarter of 2004, 56.1 million
people had bid, bought or listed an item within the
previous 12-month period. The number of active
-users accounted for during the fourth quarter of
2005 was 71.8 million,.28 percent greater. Also,
the number of cumulative confirmed registered
users recorded at the end of the fourth quarter in
2005 was 180.6 million as opposed to 135.5 mil-
lion users reported at the end of the last quarter in
2004.
With the numbers in from 2005, financial
forecasters are now trying to determine if eBay
will be able to,keep its momentumngoing in 2006.
In terms of net revenues, the company is
expecting to hit somewhere in the range of 5.700
billion to 5.900 billion for the 2006 fiscal year. If
that's to occur, that would mark a 27 percent
increase in net revenues, yet it would be 12 per-
cent less growth than what eBay enjoyed for the
2005 fiscal year.
Can eBay keep up its economic steam and
status as a major facilitator of e-commerce? Or is
the company about to level off? Check back next
week to see what some financial experts have to
say.

tryside, she is an artist alive and engaged in her world, observing.
much that most take for granted. She has exhibited broadly in the
United States and Europe, and her work is held in numerous presti-

In 1999, a diverse group of concerned
citizens began studying and analyzing exist-
ing racial disparities in infant mortality rates
in Pinellas County. The PATRICIA Group
(Pinellas African American Targeted
Reduction in Infant mortality using a
Community Intervention Approach) was
formed, and initially operated as a commu-
nity-based initiative with the support of the
Healthy Start Coalition of Pinellas, Inc.
Initially, PATRICIA included represen-
tatives of the African American community,
experts in maternal and child health, man-
aged care organizations, elected officials,
social service providers, physicians, corpo-
rate representatives, members of the faith
community, public school personnel and
private citizens. The vision of the group was
to mobilize the community to eliminate
racial, disparities in infant mortality.'The
mission of the group was to fostercommu-
nity mobilization and the organization of
resources to develop effective programs to
achieve the vision.
The group addressed multi-faceted
issues with the hope of bringing about soci-
etal change that would improve the overall
quality of life for the African American
members of the community. The premise of
their work is based upon .the concept that
health status'is related to a host of factors
including housing, education, economic
viability, relationships, and social support
and the impact that racism has on each of
these. The group members continue to artic-
ulate their belief that gains in reducing
health disparities will only occur through a
holistic approach that involves the commu-
nity as a whole.
In 2001 the Coalition received funding
for the PATRICIA group for two years from
the Allegany Franciscan Foundation. A
Coordinator was hired to staff the group.
Funding for the program ended in July
2003 and the program was transitioned to
Sthe Pinellas County Health Department to
serve as the consortium to the, Federal
Healthy Start Project.

Students to collect spare
change to benefit The
Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society
Tony Danza 'helps kick off Olive
Garden's 12th annual Pasta for Pennies
fundraiser. Olive Garden's 2006 Pasta For
Pennies program, benefiting The Leukemia
& Lymphoma Society, which kicked off
nationally with the help of talk show host
Tony Danza and patient ambassadors of The
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, took
place locally on Jan. 23 and will last all the
way through March 17.
Danza, host of the nationally syndicat-
ed "The Tony Danza Show," lent his support
to the 2005 Pasta For Pennies program and
said he was excited to join Olive Garden in
announcing the kick-off of this year's
fundraising effort.
"I was impressed when working with
these kids last year. They are so passionate
about helping their communities," said
Danza. "Programs like Pasta For Pennies
prove that small gifts really do add up. I'm
sure with all their enthusiasm they'll be very
successful and will add millions to what has
already been raised."
During this year's Pasta For Pennies
campaign, students in about 150 schools in
Citrus, DeSoto, Hardee, Hernando,
Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas and
Sarasota Counties will bring spare change
in to their classrooms. The class in each
school that collects the most money will
receive a pasta party delivered to their class-
room by their local Olive Garden.
The funds students raise can make a
lasting impact on their friends and neigh-
bors in need, as the money remains in each
local community to support a wide range of
services for patients of leukemia, lymphoma
and myeloma and their families.
"Our Pasta For Pennies program
demonstrates to children that their efforts
really do make a difference," said Shelley
Coleman, School & Youth Coordinator, of
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,
Suncoast Chapter. "Leukemia is the num-
ber one cancer killer for children and young
adults under the age of 20, and that's why
programs like this are such a meaningful
way for children to learn about the value of
community service. Every penny really
does count in the search for cures."
Olive Garden's Pasta For Pennies is a
grassroots effort that last year raised more
than $3.1 million for The Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society through contributions
from elementary, middle and high school
students across the United States. Since
1994, nearly $27 million has been collected
in spare change through the program.
"Initiatives like Olive Garden's Pasta
For Pennies promote the spirit of volun-
teerism and philanthropy,"' said Dave
Pickens; president of Olive Garden. "These
students care sp much for their local com-
munities and it shows in their support of this
program."
In addition to a pasta party at every par-
ticipating school, nationally, Olive Garden
provides meeting and marketing support to
help the more than 45 participating
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society chapters
have successful fundraising campaigns.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,
headquartered in White Plains, NY, is the
world's largest voluntary health organiza-
tion dedicated to funding blood cancer
research and providing education and

patient services. The Society's mission is to
cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's dis-
ease and myeloma, and to improve the qual-
ity of life of patients and their families.
Since its founding in 1949, the Society has
invested more than $424 million for
research specifically targeting leukemia,
lymphoma and myeloma.

The Pier Aquarium needs
vehicle for transport of live
animals and aquatic
equipment
Have a working van or truck that you
no longer need?
The Pier Aquarium needs a van or a
truck for its educational and community
outreach programs at Campbell Park
Elementary Marine Science Program, All
Children's Hospital and Ocean in Motion
schools.
"A van would make it much easier for
us to transport materials and supplies to
these locations," said Kevin Kowzan,
Curator of Exhibits. "It would also be useful
for us to have a vehicle for summer camp
and other field activities that we conduct
with our marine science partners."
Ideally The Pier Aquarium is looking
for a versatile vehicle such as a Dodge
Sprinter because it offers the ability to trans-
port students and portable 100-gallon aquar-
ium tanks for Ocean in Motion, said
Kowzan. The Dodge Sprinter provides max-
imum cargo space and standing room in the
back, crucial for loading 50-gallon drums of
water, marine creatures, 30 x 48 inch aquar-
ium stands and filters.
An individual or business that is con-
sidering donating such a vehicle would
qualify for a tax-deduction and a logo and or
company will be incorporated in the truck's
exterior design.
Ocean in Motion is a traveling touch
tank project where -students study water
quality, the food web and animal behavior
and be introduced to topics such as animal
care, marine diversity, adaptations, aquari-
um management and ecosystem steward-
ship. Once the marine habitat is established,
they can discover the ocean and its creatures
without leaving the classroom.
Funding for Ocean in Motion in 2006 is
provided in part by the Pinellas County
Commission through the Pinellas County
Arts Council Cultural: Development Grant
Program, the Sunrise Rotary Club, Beach
Drive and Downtown Business Association
and Media Sponsor St. Petersburg Times.
Ocean in Motion previous destinations
includes Southside Fundamental Middle
School, Great Explorations and Tarpon
Springs Elementary School. The touch tank
will travel to Ridgecrest Elementary School
in Largo this spring.
The Pier Aquarium's "Children on
Board" program at All Children's Hospital
features three fish tanks on the 2nd, 3rd and
4th floors. A Scientific Staff member goes to
the hospital on weekdays to feed the fish.
The Pier Aquarium also maintains, three
aquarium. for Campbell Park Elementary
School's marine science program.
For more information or to donate a
vehicle, please contact E. Howard

gives notice of its intent to issue an air permit to Trader
Publishing Company, located at 14549 62nd Street North,
Clearwater, Pinellas County. The permit authorizes Trader
Publishing Company to make modifications to an existing 34-
color press to a 44-color press by removing ten existing mono

The Department will issue the permit with the attached con-
ditions unless a response received in accordance with the follow-
ing procedures results in a different decision or significant change
of terms or conditions.
The Department will accept written comments concerning
the proposed permit issuance action for a period of fourteen days
from the date of publication of this Public Notice of Intent to
Issue Air Permit. Written comments should be provided to the
Department of Environmental Protection, 13051 N. Telecom

ments filed shall be made available for public inspection. If writ-
ten comments received result in a significant change in the pro-
posed agency action, the Department shall revise the proposed
permit and require, if applicable, another Public Notice.

Boca Ciega junior forward Josh Troupe
takes to the air on his way to the hoop in the
second quarter Tuesday 'night. The Pirates
found cracks in' the Warhawk defense, early
and often and took a 43-16 lead into the
halftime break.
Left: Boca Ciega's LaMorya Daniels
elevates for a three point shot over
Seminole's Lyndon Rowells. Daniels scored
17 points and was 4-for-4 from l~eyond the
arc.

Daniels proved not only that he could hit
the outside shot, but that he could drive the
lane as well. Here he beats a Warhawks
defender for an uncontested lay-up.
Presence in the paint was the story of the
game for the Pirates as they led in
rebounding and inside scoring.
