Hurricanes. The arrest of a 5-
year-old girl. Students hit by cars.
High gas prices. Terry Schiavo's
controversial death.
This was a year that's not
likely to be missed.
It was a year of hurricanes--
twenty six storms and seven
major hurricanes that claimed
more than 1,400 lives in the
United States. And even though
Pinellas County wasn't directly hit
or forced to endure much

damage, the emotional toll of
hurricanes was felt throughout
the county.
City officials tried to tweak the
county's evacuation plan and
local residents opened their arms
and wallets to the victims of
hurricanes Wilma, Katrina and
Rita.
Meanwhile gas prices
skyrocketed reaching the $3
mark for a gallon of regular
unleaded in September.
Also this year, a 15-year long
legal battle between Terri
Schiavo's parents Bob and Mary

Workers from Quinn Construction fix docks at the Vinoy Marina in
St. Petersburg in June. Hurricane season for the Bay area began
early with hurricane Arlene hitting Florida's Pandhandle but causing
little damage in area that was still recovering from 2004. This
hurricane season cost the country more than $100 billion in damages
and claimed over 1,400 lives. It produced deadly hurricanes such as
Rita, Katrina, which killed more than 1,300 including 14 in Florida,
and Wilma that took 35 lives in Florida. Pinellas County didn't suffer
any damages and experienced no direct hits.

St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg was named
one of the America's 100 best
communities for young people.
Joined by the City Council
members and youth leaders,
Mayor Rick Baker celebrated the
announcement at Rio Vista
Elementary School in St.
Petersburg in September. The
city was named one of the
America's 100 best communities
for young people.

Schindler and Terri's husband
Michael Schiavo, drew national
and international attention when
Terri's feeding tube was
removed.
Terri had been in "persistent
vegetative state" for over a
decade and had no living will.
The episode raised numerous
questions about end of life
issues.
Media members and protesters
surrounded the Woodside
Hospice in Pinellas Park where
Terri spent her last few months.
Schiavo passed away on March

31, two weeks after her feeding
tube was removed. She was 41.
The Pinellas County school
district made headlines when an
elementary school student,
Brooke Ingoldsby, was killed by a
car seconds after a substitute
bus driver dropped her off on the
wrong side of a busy Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. Street. She was
eight years old. Months earlier,
16-year-old Rebecca McKinney
was killed in a similar incident.
What brought most attention
was the videotaped handcuffing

The year 2005 started under the $2 mark for a gallon of regular
unleaded, according to the AAA fuel gauge data. It went above $2 as
shown on the left in March. Price for a gallon of regular gas
skyrocketed in September reaching $2.89 in St. Petersburg.
In Tampa Bay, the average price of self-serve regular gasoline
reached $2.17 as of Wednesday compared with $2.38 a month ago
and $1.87 a year ago.

A memorial is displayed on Dr.
Martin Luther King Street in St.
Petersburg where Brooke
Ingoldsby was killed in February.
Brooke's death was just the
beginning to a string of
despairing events involving
Pinellas County school district.
Two student deaths from bus-
related accidents and the
videotaped handcuffing of a 5-
year-old girl made national news.

St. Petersburg city officials and project developers broke ground
for 1010 Central in August. It is just one of a few projects in

Plaza and 400 Beach Drive and cultural developments such as the

Democratic gubernatorial
candidate Jim Davis pledged to
instill a leadership, should he be
elected next year, which will
lend more credence to the voice
of Floridians and less to dollar
bills.
The Tampa congressman,
speaking to more than 100
people at a meeting of the
Suncoast Tiger Bay Club in St.
Petersburg, asserted that the
Republican-controlled Capitol is
dominated by special interest

Police officers patrol the grounds outside the Woodside Hospice in
Pinellas Park where Terri Schiavo spent her last few months.
What started as a routine right to die case in Pinellas Park has
rapidly flourished into a national and international debate.
A 15-year long legal battle between Terri's parents Bob and Mary
Schindler and Terri's husband Michael Schiavo, who wanted to
remove her feeding tube, became national news when the judge
ordered the removal.
SDuring that time, protesters and media members occupied most of
the area around Woodside Hospice forcing Pinellas Park Poce to
beef up its security. Forty-eight people had been arrested stemming
mainly from trespassing charges. Schiavo passed away on March 31,
two weeks after her feeding tube was removed. She was 41.

Family Business of the Year Awards have
often proceeded to win national family busi-
ness awards.
Peltz Famous Brand Shoes was the only
retailer to win in any category.
"We are extremely excited and honored
to receive this fantastic recognition," says
Gary Peltz, who co-owns the 48-year-old St.
Petersburg-based chain with his brother
Marc. "It is a great honor."
Criteria include innovation of the busi-
ness's strategies and practices, expression of
positive family values in the business, qual-
ity of the link between the family and the
business, community contributions, and
overall growth and viability. Gov. Bush
- declared Nov. 18 "Florida Family Business
Day" to coincide with the awards.
This was the second major award won
in 2005 by Peltz Famous Brand Shoes. Over
the summer, the retailer was named "2005
Outstanding Business of the Year" by the St.
Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce.
The legendary family-owned retailer took
honors over a dozen competitors in a cate-
gory for companies with 26-100 employees
Three years ago, Gary and Marc Peltz
reformatted the Peltz Famous Brand Shoes
in St. Petersburg (near Tyrone Square Mall)
as a superstore in response to changing con-
sumer preferences. The move was so suc-
cessful that the company launched two more
stores in the last two years, in Cearwater at
Clearwater Mall and in Brandon at the
Brandon Town Center. Peltz also runs a
thriving Internet business, shipping shoes
all over the world from
PeltzShoes.com.Maintaining good health
habits is the key

Preventive health care to stay
healthy
The most important part of preventive
health care is maintaining good health
habits, including:
Daily exercise;.
Weight control;
Proper nutrition;
Avoidance of smoking and drug abuse;'
Abstinence from or moderation of alco-
hol use, and
Proper control of any diseases or disor-
ders (such as high blood pressure, diabetes,
or elevated levels of cholesterol in the
blood)
In addition to these habits, there are
some other professional services that may

prove worthwhile in either preventing or at
least minimizing disease.

Specific to Women:
Periodic screening of adults for specif-
ic problems is important and recommended:
Pap smear -- cervical cancer screening
Sexually-active female adolescents and
women over age 20 should have an annual
Pap smear.
After three consecutive, negative,
annual Pap smear tests, women who are
celibate (not sexually active) or monoga-
mous (have only one partner) and younger
than 35 40 years of age may decrease Pap
smear testing to every two to three years.
Women over the age of 40, women with
multiple sexual partners, and women who
take oral contraceptives should have an
annual Pap smear.
Women with a medical history of HPV
(genital warts) should have a Pap smear
every 6 months.
Breast self-examination (BSE) should
be taught during adolescence and continued
on a monthly basis throughout a woman's
life.
Mammography radiologicc (x-ray)
evaluation of the breast tissue)
A baseline mammogram is recom-
mended for women at age 40.
Mammograms should be repeated
every two years for women 40 to 50 years
old, if the baseline test is clear.
A mammogram may be done at earlier
age or at more frequent intervals if problems
are suspected, or the woman is at increased
risk (for instance, if a first-degree relative
has had breast cancer).

Specific to Men:
Testicular self-examination (TSE)
should be taught during adolescence and
continued on a monthly basis throughout a
man's life.
Prostate cancer screening
Prostate health should be evaluated by
annual digital rectal examination for men
over 40.
PSA (prostate specific antigen) may
also be used as a test to screen for prostate
cancer, but it is not specific and may indi-
cate benign growth of the prostate (benign
prostatic hypertrophy) as a man gets older.
Screening may begin earlier if there is a
strong family history of prostate cancer.
Cholesterol screening
A baseline total cholesterol measure-
ment, as well as a measurement of bad
(LDL) and good cholesterol (HDL), should
be obtained for all adults between 18 and 20
years of age
If normal, the test should berepeated
every five years.
Individuals at higher risk, including
Children with a strong family history .of
hyperlipidemia, may be screened earlier and
at more frequent intervals.
Colon cancer screening
A stool or other test for occult (hidden)
blood in the stool should be done every year
after age 50 (or sooner if there is a family
history of colon cancer).
A flexible sigmoidoscopy is recom-
mended every three years after age 50 (ear-
lier or at more frequent intervals for indi-
viduals at higher risk); colonoscopy, which
is probably a better screening test than flex-
ible sigmoidoscopy need only be repeated
every 5 10 years if normal.

Everyone is a winner: 'Say No
To Drugs Race' crossed the
finish line a success
Tampa Bay's 17th Annual 'Say No To
Drugs Holiday Classic Race' was a success
with the highest ever number of registered
runners this year.
The New Memorial Causeway Bridge
had its first ever 5K/10K race over its span
this past Saturday (Dec 17th, 2005) with the
'Say No to Drugs Holiday Classic'. Nearly
700 runners registered to race this year
bumping this race up to a new level, making
it truly a holiday tradition among the 100+
races in the Tampa Bay community each
year. Over 100 of the Clearwater
Community Volunteers came together to
make this a memorable event for the Tampa
Bay Community who worked side by side
with the race's sponsors: Starbucks Coffee,
Jamba Juice, Sweet Tomatoes, Einstein
Bros' Bagels, Boston Bill Sunglasses,
PostcardMania and many more. Afterwards,
the $1000.00 purse was distributed to the
top runners including John Emerson of
Brooksville, Maria Ghizzoni of St. Pete, Lee
Stephens of Temple Terrace, Christa Benton
of St. Pete, Keith Sawayda of Clearwater,
Dana Parrot of Tampa, Ray Chumbley of
Port Charlotte, Jacki Wachtel of Tarpon
Springs, Dan Fre nch of Brooksville and
Beth Old of St. Petersburg.
Even though this year was the race's
17th year, this was the first year to run over
the. New Memorial Causeway Bridge. The
awards pancake breakfast was also in a new
location at the historical Fort Harrison Hotel
where all the runners and their families par-
took in the pancake breakfast. Nature's Food
Patch was one of the many sponsors that
donated fresh spelt berries for the volunteers
to grind into pancake batter making the
melt-in-your-mouth-watering treats the run-
ners all raved about. 'I have to say it was a
first-class event;' claimed Stephanie Corbo,
owner of American Running Company in
Dunedin and also one of the sponsors, 'I
know a lot of the runners really felt com-
fortable being in such a beautiful place with
great food provided after running the race.-
the whole thing had such a nice flow to it.'
'Throughout the 17 years that the 'Say
No To Drugs Race'
(www.saynotodrugs.com) has been around,
one thing has never changed,' said Sue
Minkoff, a Race Director, 'and that is our
message living a drug-free life is reward-
ing and fulfilling. The best way to win in
life is to do it without drugs.'
The 'SayNo To Drugs' Holiday Classic
Race was started in 1988 by world-class
runner and Scientologist Sandra Johnson,
who, was the captain of the Dianetics
Running, Team at the time. She got her
inspiration by humanitarian L. Ron
Hubbard www.lronhubbard.org who wrote
extensively on the subject of drugs and
developed an extremely effective drug reha-
bilitation method which is currently in use
all over the world. The race advocates
healthy .and drug-free living and supports
many organizations with proceeds from the
race such as the Boy and Girl Scouts of
America, Drug Free Marshals and the most
effective drug rehabilitation organization in
the world, Narconon.

By Cathy Keen
UF
Florida's consumer confi-
dence rose six points to 90 in
December, reflecting optimism
about gas prices, the stock mar-
ket and job growth, and boding
well for holiday retailers,
University of Florida economists
report.
The increase in confidence
was broad-based, with growth in
all five components of the index.
The largest gain was in percep-
tions of U.S. economic condi-
tions over the next year, which
rose 12 points to 84 and is now
two points higher than at the
same time last year. Perceptions
as to whether it is a good time to
buy big-ticket items rose eight
points to 106. Perceptions of
personal finances now compared
with a year ago rose six points to
86. Perceptions of U.S. business
conditions over the next five
years rose five points to 83.
Finally, expectations about per-
sonal finances a year from now
rose four points to 96.
"Continued declines in
gasoline prices, an upbeat stock
market and high levels of
employment all contributed to
gains in consumer confidence
this month," said Chris McCarty,
director of the survey research
center at UF's Bureau of'
Economic and Business
Research. "Frankly, we had been
expecting a moderate rise in
confidence at best, given rising

interest rates and expectations
that energy prices will soon be
climbing again. However, these
effects have not hit the Florida
consumer yet, and given the pos-
itive indicators, consumers
appear to be feeling pretty good
about the economy and their
finances. This should be good
news for Florida retailers who
have been concerned about the
holiday shopping season."
Nationally, retail sales for
the holiday season have been
slow to gain momentum,
McCarty said. November retail
sales showed very slow growth,
primarily because of falling auto
sales and the effect of lower fuel
prices on gasoline sales, but
recent data from chain stores
suggests holiday spending may
have been picking up toward the
end of the gift-buying rush, he
said.
Given the extra Saturday
before Christmas, McCarty said,
some forecasts suggested that
many consumers may have been
waiting until the last minute to
make holiday purchases.
"Retailers will need that kind of
boost to make significant gains
over last year, given the slow
start and the reasonably good
sales performance in 2004," he
said.
But while consumer confi-
dence for the next month or two
may remain at current levels,
McCarty said he expects it to
decline as rising energy prices
and interest rates affect con-

summer spending.
"As colder weather up north
raises demands on many types of
energy, particularly natural gas,
energy bills there and in Florida
will rise," he said.
The concern with interest
rates is there are already signs of
a slow-down in real estate, par-
ticularly in Florida markets that
have been bid up as a result of
speculative buying. "In 2006, we
will see a dramatic slowing in
home equity loans and refinanc-
ing that has been fueling con-
sumer spending for the past sev-
eral years," he said.
The research center con-
ducts the Florida Consumer
Attitude survey monthly.
Respondents are 18 or older and
live in households telephoned
randomly. The preliminary index
for December was conducted
from 401 responses. The error
rate is plus or minus 5 percent.
Consumer confidence is
designed to help predict buying
patterns by measuring the mood
of consumers toward purchas-
ing. Although other economic
indicators also predict buying
patterns, consumer confidence
tends to be available sooner.
The index is benchmarked
to 1966, so a value of 100 repre-
sents the same level of confi-
dence for that year. The value of
the index is in comparing
changes over time rather than
looking at an isolated month.

UF creates $1.5 million endowed

professorship in early childhood

education, named after ex-publisher

and child-advocate David Lawrence

By Larry Lansford
UF

Since retiring in 1999, former Miami Herald.
publisher David Lawrence Jr. has worked to
strengthen the nation's commitment to early
childhood development so all children will arrive
at school prepared for success.
Lawrence now has a lasting legacy for his
efforts, and it promises to further strengthen the
"school-readiness" movement that is his passion'
and new life's work.
Lawrence's alma mater, the University of
Florida, announced today that it has received
more than $1 million in private gifts from more
than 80 individuals and children's advocacy
groups to create an endowed faculty position in
the College of Education. The post will be called
the David Lawrence Jr. Endowed Professorship in
Early Childhood Studies.
The state wiill contribute $500,000 under'
Florida's matching gifts program to create a $1.5
million faculty post. Earnings from the endow-
ment fund will finance a world-class scholar's
teaching and research activities. The College of
Education will conduct a search for a nationally
recognized practitioner and scholar in early child-
hood education.
"Naming this professorship after David
Lawrence honors the contributions of one of the
University of Florida's most accomplished gradu-
ates: and a prominent national advocate for the
early childhood school-readiness movement," UF
President Bernie Machen said. "The world-class
scholar who is chosen for this professorship will,
provide the leadership to pursue cross-discipli-
nary projects aimed at improving the services and
policies affecting infants, young children and
their families."
Advancing early child development and edu-
cation is a state and nationwide concern. Recent
federal statistics show a growing number of chil-
dren face extreme obstacles to learning before
they enter school. Eighteen percent of children
under age 6 live in poverty. Children under 5 rep-
resent 85 percent of child abuse and neglect vic-
tims and more than 30 percent of all children in
foster care. Seventeen percent bf young children
have developmental disabilities and 2.5 million
children 5 or younger do not have health insur-
ance coverage.
"About a third of all children begin kinder-
garten already behind,"' UF College of Education
Dean Catherine EmihoVich said. "There is a
growing recognition of the need for collaborative,
policy-oriented approaches to fully address the
complex needs of children from before birth to
age 5. This professorship will help to bridge the
existing research gap in early child development."
Emihovich said tapping into the collective
expertise of university experts in numerous disci-
plines-including education, law, medicine, psy-
chology and sociology-is vital to addressing the

comprehensive needs of infants and young chil-
dren.
Recent statistics show that Florida, the
nation's fourth largest state, still ranks in the bot-
tom third of states in a number of key indicators-
in low-birthweight babies, in the number of high
school dropouts and in child poverty.
Some of Lawrence's efforts have helped
Florida become a national leader in the movement
for school readiness and high-quality early devel-
opment, care and education. He is president of the
Early Childhood Initiative Foundation in Miami,
and in 2002 led the successful campaign for The
Children's Trust, which provides early interven-
tion and prevention funding for children in
Miami-Dade.
Named by Gov. Jeb Bush to the Florida
Partnership for School Readiness, he chaired that
oversight board for two terms. Lawrence, a 1963
UF journalism graduate, was a key figure in the
passage of the statewide constitutional amend-
ment that provides high-quality, pre-kindergarten
availability for all 4-year-olds beginning the cur-
rent school year.
Lawrence joined the UF faculty in 2001 as
the University Scholar for Early Childhood
Development and Readiness, and he is a board
member of the Lastinger Center for Learning at
the UF College of Education.
"I am deeply grateful to those who con-
tributed to the chair .because they believe in .the
cause as well as in me," Lawrence said. "The
University of Florida caA become one of this
country's principal higher education resources for
energizing the national movement for school
readiness, and this chair can be an important part
of that."
Emihovich said early childhood education is
one of the College of Education's core priorities.
The college's Lastinger Center is involved with
Lawrence's Early Childhood Initiative
Foundation and also works with a W.K. Kellogg
Foundation-funded program called SPARK-
Supporting Partnerships to Assure Ready Kids-
in Miami-Dade County to ensure children's
healthy development and early success in school.
The Lastinger Center recently received funding to
conduct a statewide evaluation of the Governor's
Family Literacy Initiative, a program designed to
encourage parents to read to young children.
"We also plan to utilize Baby Gator, UF's
campuswide childcare center, as a pre-school
child development and research center and col-
laborate with other units, on campus such as nurs-
ing, pediatrics, law, the UF McKnight Brain
Institute and our P.K. Yonge K-12 laboratory
school to promote the optimal development of
young children and their families on a statewide
and national level," Emihovich said. "The
Lawrence endowed professorship will draw
national and international visibility to the univer-
sity's current initiatives and enable us to seek
additional support to help young children reach
their full potential in school and in their lives."

Discovery's test mission

a success

Space Shuttle Discovery launched from
NASA's Kennedy Space Center July 26, 2005,
ending a two-and-a-half year wait for the historic
return to flight mission. STS-114 included breath-
taking in-orbit maneuvers, tests of new equipment
and procedures, and a first-of-its-kind spacewalk-
ing repair.
The flight provided unprecedented informa-
tion on the condition of an orbiter in space.
Noguchi and Robinson did three successful space-
walks at the International Space Station and

Discovery transported tons of equipment and sup-
plies to and from the Station.
Discovery touched down Aug. 9 at Edwards
Air Force Base in California, capping a 5.8 mil-
lion mile journey and successful reentry. The
orbiter returned Aug. 21 to Kennedy Space Center
atop a modified Boeing 747 called the Shuttle
Carrier Aircraft. Discovery was also chosen to to
fly the follow-up return to flight mission, STS-
121.
