Just a few minutes after
being introduced Tuesday as the
new manager of the Tampa Bay
Devil Rays. Joe Maddon could-
n't keep himself from repeatedly
looking out onto the turf at
Tropicana Field and envisioning
himself in his new role next sea-
son.
"It's been a goal of mine for
a long time." said Maddon. "I
can't wait to get going."
Maddon, who has been
coaching baseball at various lev-
els for the past 25 years. includ-
ing the past 12 with the Angels,

said he isn't all that familiar with
his new players, but that he liked
\what he sa\w from the Rays this
past season when they played
against his Anaheim team.
Although 51. Madden. a
self-described high energy guy
who prefers to look at the posi-
uive side of things, said he looks
forward to working with the
young Rays team and helping it
to improve.
"I really dig young guys,"
Maddon said.
Ho\w does he plan on help-
ing the team improve? Maddon
said he'll stress the little things.
"I believe in drill work," he
said. "You need to do the little
things properly as often as possi-

ble. That's how you get to be
better."
Maddon said he hopes to
assemble coaching staff byithus
weekend.
While it remains to be seen
how many current Rays' coaches

under Maddon. third-base coach
Tom Foley and first-base coach
Billy Hatcher are, at the \ery
least, sutong candidates to
remain \sith the club.
Once the coaches are in
place, Mladdon said they ill be
given the same kind of responsi-
bility that he enjoyed as a coach
and that doing so will allow him
to do his job effectuvely.

added that he trusts the Rays' top
decision makers to handle player
personnel matters.
While Friedman admitted
that discussions regarding pay-
roll had taken place with
Maddon, he said no specific
numbers had been mentioned.
Hunsicker said this: is a rare
year for free agency in that there
are fewer quality players avail-
able this offseason.,
"It's a little spottier than it
usually might be," he said.
Hunsicker asserted that it
may be more likely that the Rays
will make a move through trad-
ing rather than a big free agent
signing.
"There's a lot of interest in
our players," said Hunsicker.
Asked if there were any
untouchables on the Rays roster,
Hunsicker said ask Friedman.

While the front office cer-
tainly has a long way to go in
finalizing the make-up of the
team before spring training.
Maddon said he believes team
success doesn't have to rely on a
large payroll and that a team's
history doesn't have to dictate its
future
"You beat the game of base-
ball through execution." he said.
"Get away from the color of the
shirts or ho's in it or what it
says on the front because that
really doesn't matter."
While that may be true, it
.was obvious this. week that
Friedman. Hunsicker and the
rest of the Rays' front office
were thrilled to see Maddon put
on a Tampa Bay jersey.
With a new manager who's
full of enthusiasm leading the
%way on the field, the leaders of
the organization feel that the
team is headed in the right direc-
tion and that there is plenty of
reason to be optimistic. Maddon
agrees.
"I believe if you ha\e posi-
tive energy out there, it's going
to come back," he said.

St. Petersburg cooks it up

A former customer. Fran

chise owners of Let's Eat, a
small meal preparation company
that helps families put together
healthier meals in less time.
Like her customers. Nlikuta

she has a better

led her to Tampa shop a year ago
where she as a customer became
intrigued by the idea
"I thought it was a wonder-

ful concept that could help a lot

her job in February to spend

"The real test came after I got
home from work and played

The food can be frozen, then

reduces the amount of time it
takes to prepare meals every day
and the amount of stress that
goes into it, said Nlikuta.
She said that she doesn't see

then press "2" to be connected to the hot-
line. Individuals are encouraged to monitor
the flu line for information on any new ship-
ments of flu vaccine and on the status of flu
shots available at the health department.
If you have not yet received a flu shot,
here are some suggestions:
Check with your healthcare provider to
see if you can get a flu shot there.
Stay in touch with the local media for
announcements of flu shot availability.
To stay healthy all year, here are
healthy habits everyone can always use to
help protect themselves against the flu and
the spread of germs:
Get in the habit of washing your hands '
frequently with soap and water or alcohol-
based hand *cleaner;
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or
mouth;
If possible, avoid close contact with
people who are sick;
Stay at home when you are sick, and do
not send your children to school when .they
are sick;
Do not share eating utensils, drinking
glasses, towels or other personal items -
even with members of your family;
Cover your nose and mouth with a tis-
sue every time you sneeze or cough, then
throw away the, used tissue. If you are
unable to use a tissue, cover your cough
with your sleeve.; and
Remind children to practice healthy
habits, too!

new developments.
The CERA designation indicates a
commitment to constantly seeking improve-
ments in the election process, offering a tan-
gible benefit to Pinellas County voters. Ms.
Clark is always ready to put the latest
proven voting techniques and procedures
into practice whenever it will make voter
registration or voting easier for citizens or
when it will make election procedures more
efficient.
Voters also benefit by Ms. Clark's thor-
ough knowledge about every aspect of elec-
tions and her policy of setting high stan-
dards. She is passionate about preserving
the freedom to vote in fair and accurate
elections. And, she is that rare individual
who loves what she does not only her elec-
tions duties, but also in public service to her
community through numerous boards and
associations.
It is impressive that Pinellas County's
elections chief has attained the election pro-
fession's highest designation. To be among
the first several hundred with any type.of
national certification is to be honored; but to
be'among the first in the elections profes-
sion which grows more challenging each
year is extraordinary.

Walk this way: UF research

Largo dominates Dunedin 23-0 in provides insight into heart

opening round of the playoffs

Dunedin- running back Rico Boykins finds some open space early in Friday's game. Scenes like this one were a rare sight as Largo
dominated the line defensively for much of the game. The Packers' defense limited the Falcons to just 10 yards of offense in the second half
and only allowed 59 yards for the entire game.

Photos by Carter Chase
Above left: No matter what the Dunedin offense tried, a Largo
defender quickly emerged on the scene.,

Left: With the Falcons offense struggling, the Largo offense took
over and wore down a formidable Dunedin defense that tired in the
second half from being on the field so often.

Above: Largo RB Dexter McCluster is harassed by a gang Dunedin
defenders. The Falcons defense managed to keep the county's best
runner in check in the first-half and subsequently, the Falcons were
only down 3-0 at the half. McCluster, however could only be slowed
for so long. He took over in the second half scoring two touchdowns
and finished with 108 yards rushing.

UF
Thirty minutes of brisk
walking a day is a step in the
right direction toward improved
heart health, according to a
University of Florida study pub-
lished in today's (Nov. 14)
Archives of Internal Medicine.
UF researchers found that
study participants who were pre-
scribed an exercise regimen of
walking for 30 minutes five or
more days a week at either a
moderate or hard intensity, or at
a hard intensity three to four
days a week, showed significant
long-term improvements in car-
diorespiratory fitness. Fast-
paced, frequent walking offered
the largest fitness benefits and
also led to modest, short-term
improvements in cholesterol lev-
els.
A half hour of moderate-
intensity walking most days of
the week has been associated
with significant health benefits
and is in line with recommenda-
tions from the American Heart
Association, the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention,
and the U.S. Surgeon General.
But instead of evaluating weight
loss, the UF study focused
specifically on exercise's effects
on heart health and addressed
the wide variability in people's
adherence to exercise regimens,
which health providers must
take into account when counsel-
ing patients.
"National guidelines for
exercise are based largely on
studies conducted in laboratory
settings with close supervision
of how much' exercise is com-
pleted by the study participants,"
said principal investigator
Michael Perri, associate dean
and a professor of clinical and
health psychology in UF's
College of Public Health and
Health Professions. "In our
research, we were very interest-
ed in learning about the ways
people respond to different exer-
cise prescriptions "hen they are
asked to complete the exercise
on their own, in their home or
work environments."
Exercise at either high fre-
quency or hard intensity seems
to be the key, the researchers dis-
covered.

"When exercising on their
own, people generally complete
only about 60 percent of the
amount prescribed,". Perri said.
"As a result, an exercise pre-
scription for moderate-intensity
walking on three to four days a
week may not generate a large
enough amount of exercise to
produce a change in fitness."
In the two-year study, UF
researchers evaluated 500 seden-
tary men and women ages 30 to
69 who were randomly assigned
to one of four exercise groups or
to a comparison group that only
received group counseling by a
physician. The duration and type
of exercise prescribed were the
same for each of the exercise
groups 30 minutes of walking
a day but the intensity and
frequency varied.
Cardiorespiratory fitness
levels remained high in these
.groups when measured again at
two years, but improvements in
cholesterol profiles were not
sustained, perhaps due to dimin-
ished adherence to the regimen,
Perri said.
The difference between the
amount of exercise prescribed
and the amount likely to be per-
formed should be taken into
account. when health providers
make recommendations to their
patients, the researchers say.
"I was most surprised by
how much variability there was
in how closely the participants
followed their exercise prescrip-
tions," said the paper's lead
author Glen Duncan, an assistant
professor of epidemiology in the
nutritional sciences program at
the University of Washington.
"The UF study provides
valuable information that health
practitioners can use when coun-
seling their patients on exercise
plans, write Steenr Blair and
Michael LaMonte of the Cooper
Institute, in an editorial accom-
panying the journal article.
"This study makes impor-
tant contributions to our under-
standing of how much exercise
is necessary to produce impor-
tant physiological adaptations,"
Blair said "The bottom line is
that 30 minutes of walking on
five to seven days a \\eek pro-
vides substantial health bene-
fits."

The Offshore Super Series will be holding World Championship
races, known as the Chrysler Jeep OSS'Offshore World Championship
Races in St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach this weekend. A five day
event is filled with activities in Vinoy Park and in Fort DeSoto Park.
The event will also include performances by the Team FMX
Motorcross Stunt Show, entertainment from local radio station WILD
98.7 and a showcase of boats at Vinoy Park. Different vendors will
also be present at the event.

Boats and teams arrived in St.
Petersburg's Vinoy Park Tuesday,
Nov. 15 to prepare for the rest of
the week. The actual races will
be held in St. Pete Beach.
The course length for the race
is 6.2 miles and includes the Don
Cesar Beach Resort north of the
Trade Winds Island Grand Beach
Resort on St. Pete Beach. The
officials say it is one of the most
challenging race courses ever
designed for offshore racing.
