St. Petersburg Mayor Rick

elections taking 70 percent of the
vote in defeating challenger Ed
Helm.
Other results from this
week's election included two
City Council incumbents retain-
ing their seats.
John Bryan defeated attor-
ney Eve Joy and Earnest
Williams beat Darden Rice, a
Sierra Club organizer and envi-
ronmental activist.
Council newcomer Jeff
Danner beat his opponent Jamie
Mayo for District 8 seat vacated
due to term limits and incumbent
Virgina Littrell was defeated by
Leslie Curran in a low city
turnout election.
Without national or state
races to draw people to the polls,
the turnout was just 17 percent.
Mayor Baker won an easy
victory over challenger Helm
winning by a margin of 13,203
votes. It was the best showing in
a mayoral election since 1989.
During the campaign, Baker
said if re-elected, he plans to
focus on Midtown, affordable
housing and improving city's
school system.
Helm, a former U.S.
Department of Labor lawyer, ran
his campaign to counter Baker's.
He said that the city is in trouble
and he \would limit downtown
de\ elopment and treat Midtow n
like the rest of the cit\.
This isn't the first time Helm
ran for political office in St.
Petersburg., In 1993, he lost in
the primary race for the District
4 City Council seat;
In the closest watched arnd
the most dramatic race, Council
member Willian-s defeated chal-
lenger Rice b taking 53 percent
of the vote. Rice. a political
novice, upset incumbent
Williams by 19 'ores in the Sept.

then. both candidates battled.

Bryan said he will seek
improvements that- include a

Joy's priorities in this year's
election were to get local legisla-

dominant powers.
In District 8, where council
member Jay Lasita was forced
out by term limits, Jeff Danner, a
member of the city's Planning
Commission and Historic

Gerry Hunsicker (right), the new senior vice president of base
operations for the Devil Rays gestures toward Andrew Friedmar
team's new executive vice president of baseball operations dur
conference to introduce the two last Thursday.
Owner Stuart Sternberg announced that instead of appointing
individual to be general manager, Friedman and Hunsicker will
collaboratively on all issues regarding the team and Ihat the yo
less experienced Friedman will have final say.

By Carter Chase

After eight seasons and
seen last place firushes, the
Tampa Bay De\ il Rays are in the

midst this offseason of
largest organizational rest
ing in club history.
Thursday, principal o%\ ner
Sternberg. in conrinuin
oNerhaul. declared not

change in the front office, but a
change in philosophy of how to
build a winning franchise.
In introducing .Gerry
Hunsicker, who served-nine
\ea s as general manager of the
Houston Astros, as senior vice
president of baseball operations,
Sternberg proclaimed that the,
Rays will be better off with two
men running the show, rather
than just one.'
Bypassing the traditional
idea of delegating' duties to a
gene al manager, Sternberg.
appointed Hunsicker, a 55-year-
old seasoned veteran of front
,:r,:, office baseball to work along-
l side 28-year-old Andrew
ball
Fried man, the team's new execu-
n, the
l\ me ing a operations, and help handle the
responsibilities of establishing
ig an the tean's makeup.
work W\hile it may appear to be a
unger, mentor and protdgd type rela-
r,:niship on the surface, top exec-
hcjr u tes for the Rays stressed that
It i\ ill actually be Friedman who
a has final say and that
Last Hunsicker's role'will be to assist
Stuart
S him on all issues.
? the
"Andrew is responsible for
just a

our baseball operations." said
Sternberg. "He has my complete
trust and confidence and his
judgment, and willingness to
embrace new ideas are invalu-
able to this organization. Gerry's
accomplishments are well docu-
mented. He now has a signifi-
cant voice in all 'aspects of our
baseball operations,"
"Andrew and Gerry will
work closely together. While
certain strengths of 'these two
men will overlap, their broad
range of skills complement each
'other in an ideal way. With [team.
president] Matt [Silverman].,
Andrew and Gerry, we now have
the people and the structure.in
place that will allow us to create
the organization that I envi-
sioned."
Although Hunsicker inter-
viewed with the Philadelphia
Phillies to become their general
manager, he said he won't mind
playing a secondary role within
the Rays organization.
"It didn't matter to me what
the role was, I wanted to be part
of something positive,"
Hunsicker said. "Something
where I felt like I was part of a

team and we were all committed
to each other. And trusted each
other, And had a chance.to build
!something special."
Friedman, a former Wall
Street investor who spent the
past two years as director of
baseball development v.ith the
Rays and was the team's primary
leader in signing left-fielder Carl
Crawford; to a.long-term con-
tract, said he looks forward to
taking Hunsicker's input into
consideration.
"Obviously, I'm going to
have the ultimate say on player
personnel decisions, but Gerry's
going to assist me in ever facet
of the organization," Friedman
said. "We'll obviously have
strong opinions, and it would be
silly for me not to draw upon.his
experience."
Hunsicker asserted that he
will respect. Friedman's position
as his superior but that he won't
hesitate to let his opinions be
heard.
"I'm here to support what
Andrew wants to do," Hunsicker
said. "I'm here for him to use me

John Lennon's birthday
remembered with food bank
promotion
"Proceeds from IMAGINE license
plate sales go to the Florida Association of
Food Banks," says Pinellas County Tax
Collector Diane Nelson.
Pinellas County Tax Collector employ-
ees remembered what would have been the
late John Lennon's 65th birthday on Oct. 9
by soliciting food donations during October
and November to help the hungry and pro-
moting the sale of IMAGINE specialty
license plates.
"Proceeds from IMAGINE license
plate sales go the Florida Association of
Food Banks in memory of John Lennon,"
says Pinellas County Tax Collector Diane
Nelson. IMAGINE takes its name from
Lennon's song by the same name. The plate
bears the image of a John Lennon self-por-
trait authorized by his family. The plate's
sponsors encouraged Tax Collector employ-
ees to highlight plate sales in October.
In addition, Pinellas County Tax
Collector Diane Nelson has teamed up with
America's Second Harvest and their state
affiliate, Florida Association of Food Banks,
Inc. to encourage her employees and cus-
tomers. to donate food to help the hungry
through the months of October and
November. Tax Collector. employees have
decorated food collection containers near
the office entrances and America's Second
Harvest@ of Tampa Bay has arranged for
pick-ups of these donations with their local
service partners, the RCS Food Pantry in
upper Pinellas and the St. Petersburg Free
Clinic Food Bank in southern Pinellas.

Holiday shopping: Is a sale
price always your best deal?
SHoliday sale ads blanket the airwaves,
jam your mailbox and add another pound to
your Sunday paper. Consumers will soon be
bombarded with ads for pre-holiday sales,
preferred customer specials, early bird
sales, midnight madness events, coupon
savings days, and-of course-post-holiday
sales. Before you're snowed under with win-
ter holiday offers, Pinellas County Justice
and Consumer Services has some pre-shop-
ping tips:
"Shop around. A sale price isn't always
the best price. Some merchants may offer
the sale price on the item you want for a
limited time and others offer the same item
at a lower price regularly. When compari-
son-shopping, make sure you know the
item's manufacturer, model number, stock
number or other identifying information.
"Read sale ads carefully. Some may
state that quantities are limited or 'that no
rain checks are offered. Call ahead to make
sure the item you wantiis in stock. If you're
shopping for a popular item, ask the mer-
chant if he' or she is willing to hold the item
until you can come in to the store.
"Take time and travel costs into consid-
eration. If an item is on sale, but it's all the
way across town, how much aie ou really

saving once your time and travel costs are
added?
"Look for price-matching policies.
Some merchants will match, or even beat,
their competitors' prices. Read the mer-
chant's pricing policy carefully.
"Go online. Check out Internet sites
that compare prices for items offered online.
Some sites also compare prices offered at
stores in your area. Budget shipping costs
and delivery time in when factoring the total
cost of an online purchase.
"Carefully consider bargain offers that
are based on purchases of additional mer-
chandise.. For example, "buy one, get one
free" or "free gift with purchase." If you
don't really want or need the item, it's not a
deal.
"Ask about sale adjustments. If you buy
an item at the regular price and it goes on
sale the next week, can you get a credit or
refund for the discounted amount?
"Ask about refund and return policies
for sale items. Merchants may have differ-
ent refund and return policies for sale or
clearance items.

Justice and Consumer Services at (727)

Hall of Fame induction planned
Florida Blood Services and Baxter
Healthcare Corporation are proud to recog-
nize and induct Franklin Knight III into the
National Donation Hall of Fame, sponsored
by Baxter Healthcare. The Donation Hall of
Fame, now entering its eighth year, recog-
nizes individuals nationwide who have
demonstrated commitment to blood dona-
tion.
Mr. Knight will be formally inducted, in
the Hall of Fame on November 15, 2005 at
9:30 am at Florida Blood Services
Corporate Office located at 10100 Martin
Luther King Jr. Street North in St.
Petersburg. Mr. Knight will be honored for
his many contributions to people in need to
blood transfusions.
"It's a fitting tribute to one of our most
dedicated donors," said Don Doddridge,
CEO of Florida Blood 'Services. "He was a
music teacher in the Pinellas County School
District for over 40 years, and was not only
a role model, but also advocated blood
donation to. his students. He has given self-
lessly given the gift of life to hundreds of
patients in need and 'is a hero to our com-
munity.''
"Each and every .donor inducted into
the Donation Hall of Fame is an amazing
individual, and we are honored to be able to
thank them with this award," said Kevin
McCulloch, general manager for,Baxter's
Transfusion Therapies division in North
America. 'The gift of blood is a gift of life
and we hope there donors' stories will
inspire others to support their communities
through blood donation."
Mr. Knight's first experience with
donating blood was at an ROTC blood drive
at Florida State University in 1959. Since

then, he has given more than 80 gallons of

to give of myself for the betterment of
humanity," said Mr. Knight. "The real
reward for me has been in the results from
the act itself. It's that simple and so easy."

mitted nominations for this year's Donation

sion to donation blood and encouraging

Beach renourishment begins
Beach renourishment along Pinellas
County's Gulf Coast began November 4th
on Sand Key. The renourishment project
covers nearly nine miles of beach stretching
from Crescent Beach Club on Sand Key to
North Redington Beach, with the exception
of Belleair Shores.
Sand dredged from Egmont Shoals is
sent by barge to an unloader located about a
mile offshore from Dan's Island. From there
it's pumped through a mile of pipeline to the
beaches.
About 1.5 million cubic yards of sand is
needed to renourish the beaches.
"That's enough sand to fill the football
field at Raymond James Stadium 625 feet
high. That's taller than any of the buildings
in downtown Tampa," said Nicole Elko,
coastal management coordinator for
Pinellas County's Department of
Environmental Management.,
The width of the beach is usually 200
feet, but in some areas erosion has exposed
the seawall, completely erasing the beach.
"The main purpose of beach renourish-
ment is to protect the beach communities
from damage during storms," Elko said.
Renourishment along the northern
beaches will continue until early next year
when the project will proceed south to
Indian' Rocks Beach, Indian Shores.
Redington Shores and North Redington
Beach.
The beach renourishment effort is part
of a.$30 million federal beach nourishment
project. The area from Sand Key to North
Redington Beach is on an eight-year rota-
tion for renourishment.

Rays from page 1
in any way he wants. One thing
about me, he's going to know
where I stand on the issues."
Sternberg has considerable
faith that Friedman will be able
to guide the Rays in the right
direction with Hunsicker behind
him.
"Andrew Friedman is the
absolute right person to lead our
baseball operations, today,"
Sternberg said. "He possesses
the smarts, the instincts and the
leadership qualities of a top
executive. He has begun to
assemble a staff that will lead the
Rays to sustained success on the
field. That begins today with
Gerry. I am certain that Andrew
and Gerry will work in concert
to bring on great new additions
to our baseball operations staff."
While Sternberg said there
is no set scheme in place for how
the baseball operations depart-
ment will operate, he believes
that more teams will soon switch
to a similar, more corporate-like
structure. Sternberg believes
the collaboration of Friedman
and Hunsicker is the right
approach for a franchise that is
trying to rebuild itself. He con-

tends that just because there
won't be an individual working
under the title of general manag-
er, that doesn't mean there won't
be effective leadership.
"It's going to be a work in
progress, but (Gerry's) job is to
touch 'everything," Sternberg
said. "Andrew recognizes as
well or better than anybody else
that Gerry is an expert in a lot of
things, and if Andrew says "A'
and Gerry says "B', they'll talk
about it. Andrew will try to
understand that point of view."
One of the first issues that
Friedman and Hunsicker will
tackle together is the. hiring of a
manager. As of Wednesday, the
three finalists for the job, John
McLaren, Joe Maddon and
Bobby Valentine were still in the
running and a decision was
expected by November 18.
Whoever is hired, it is
expected that CF Rocco Baldelli
will be on their opening day ros-
ter.
Baldelli was on the verge
earlier this week of signing a
six-year contract. An announce-
ment was expected by week's
end.

Once a decision on a man-
ager is made, Friedman and
Hunsicker will spend the
remainder of the offseason
focusing heavily on player per-
sonnel and arbitration matters.
While the baseball opera-
tions staff expects some change
among the current player roster,
it is expected that the team's core
from 2005, mainly Crawford,
Julio Lugo, Jorge Cantu and
Jonny Gomes, will take the field
in 2006.
No matter how much player
personnel changes or remains
the same, the new faces in the
Rays front office say make no
mistake that they are prepared to
try something different.
"We have. a chance to do
something here that quite
frankly I don't think exists any-
where else in baseball namely
the support of an owner that has
trust and confidence in us to say,
"You guys chart the course, you
guys tell us where we need to go
and how we need to get there,"
Hunsicker said. "That's exciting.
It's like having a blank canvas as
an artist and letting your imagi-
nation run wild."

The Cougars own Pinellas'
County's best overall record at'9-
1 while the Rebels have been
playing their best ball recently,
reeling off five consecutive wins"

Class 5A playoffs get

underway tonight

It's the middle of November and that
means it's time for the high school foot-
ball postseason. There are two games
tonight in Class 5A that feature four' of
Pinellas County's strongest teams. Both
girues feature some intriguing story lines.
The following is a look at each match-tip
along with an outcome prediction.

Regional Quarterfinal 7:30 P.M.
Dunedin (7-3) at Largo (8-2)

This is a revenue game for Largo which lost
its first game of the season to the Falcons in
September. 21-13.
The disappointment from ihat loss seemed to
. carr\ over to the next w eel.: hen the Packers were
Crushed b\ the Gibbs GlJdiators 34-14.
Since then. Largo. has looked every bit the
preseason favorite it \as, and behind Pinellas
Counts's all tune leading running back. Dexter
McCluster, the Pack has been ruling late. The\
have won fi\e games in a row and McCluster has
looked as strong as eter.
S Although batting cramps during a 34-23 vic-
tory over the St Petersburg Green De\ils in
October, McCluster still managed to run for more
Than 200 vards and score 4 touchdown ns. His heart
Sand determination were on display\ m that game
and one has to think lie won't let down no\. that
: the playoffs ha\e arrived.
Dunedin mean~ while is led b\ a sting\ defense
that kept the Packers in check during their first
show dow n.
The Falcons allowed 20+ points to the oppo-
sition just once all season and two \weeks ago.
against Palm Harbor University High School,
Dunedin recorded a rare shutout in winning 21-0
The \were led. in part. b\ the pla of senior deten-
sire back Lamar Green. \ho twice kep' PHLi
from scoring b\ making interceptions in the end
zone.
While Dunedin's offense has been inconsis-
tent at times, it is capable of putting up some large
numbers and should be able to hang \with Largo
even if McCluster goes off.
Regardless, it'sldirficult to go against the Pack:
with the \\a\ the\'\e been playing as of late. and
certainly McCluster doesn't \ant tlus to be his last
high school game before attending USF next fall.
Prediction:
Largo 27- Dunedin 21

Regional Quarterfinal 7:30 P.M.
Dixie Hollins (8-2) at Countryside (9-1)

It was supposed to be a rebuilding year for
Country side after losing star quarterback Harnson
Beck to graduation after last season. As the coun-
tN has learned this season, however, the Cougars
don't rebuild. theN reload.
Led by Beck's replacement Junior L.D. Cro\w.
the Cougars dominated each and every one of
their opponents this year and were undefeated
heading into the last regular season game against
,the Lakew ood Spartans
While most expected the Cougars to destroy
:the Spau tans, a team with just one \\in entering the
contest, it was not to be The Spartans defense
cane to pla\ and Lake\ ood came a\ ay \\ ith a 20-
1-4 victory .
After the game. Cro\ \\was hospitalized due to
a lit he sustained in the first quarter. While Crow
continued to play alter the incident last week, he
\\ill not be in action tonight against a formidable
Dixie Hollins squad.
S..:Taking Crow\'s place \\ill be one of h the team's
best wide receivers, Mati Molone. Needless to
say, things ma\ not come so easily for
.Countryside this e\ermng and the Rebels hope
that's the case..
Led by potent ground game that runs behind
one of the area's top lineman in James Boger,
Dixie Hollins is a force to be reckoned w ith.
S. The Rebels are a senior laden ball club and
despite the lack of a steady passing game. the\
rarely,take a series off.
Since losing to the Cougars 30-1-4, Diie has
\\on fine straight and seems primed for a solid
pljaoff run.
With the absence of Countryside's number
one quarterback, this game should be closer than
the first contest \\as. .
With Crow, the Cougars had a powerful.
mulii-dtmensional offense It remains to be seeh
w ether that'll continue to be the case now that
he's on the sidelines .
It ma3 be up to the Rebels defense to slw\\
down the Cougars running game, something it's
done venr effectively this season against most of
its opposition.
This is a statement game for both schools. A
win for Dixie proves they can compete with.the
best.- A victory for Countryside will show that
they have life and the sustained ability to reload.
I In a nail biter, Dixie emerges victorious
behind the leadership of its seniors.
Prediction:
Dixie Hollins 17 Countryside 16
