As the date of the race for

Challenger Rice, the 35-

threatened to boycott the debate
sponsored by the Suncoast. Tiger

After much controversy, the

Rice said that she \will fight

community pohce officers.
She vowed she will listen to
residents.
"As your council member I
\\ill listen." said Rice. "That is
something the incumbent has not
done. About 65 percent of otherss

other than Earnest Williams."
Rice called for a fresh start.
Williams talked about his
family and the past four years in
the City Council. He called St.
Petersburg one of the best cities
in the world, and commented on

its change.
"For the first time in the his-

proud of this city."
"We have so much to do.

opening remarks.
Williams hasn't been one of

Williams says that he \\ ill tackle
the affordable housing issue. He

builders and creating housing

Navy Seaman Apprentice Ricardo Valle, a 2005 graduate of
Clearwater High School, Clearwater, Fla., recently completed U.S.
Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, Valle completed a variety of train-
ing which included classroom study and practical instruction on
naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and
shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on phys-
ical fitness.
The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations". This
exercise gives recruits the skills and.confidence they need to suc-
ceed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic
warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance
in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills
and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its dis-
tinctly "Navy" flavor was designed to take into account what it
means to be a Sailor.
Navy Ensign Ryan W. Thrun, son of Barbara A. and Larry W.
Thrun of St. Petersburg, Fla., recently received his commission as a
naval officer after completing Officer Candidate School (OCS) at
Officer Training Command, Pensacola, Fla. During the 13-week-
long training program, Thrun received extensive instruction on a
variety of specialized subjects including navigation, ship handling,
engineering, naval warfare and management. Thrun also completed
a demanding daily physical fitness program that involved running,
swimming and calisthenics.
In addition, Thrun and fellow OCS graduates received leader-
ship training and instruction on the importance of the Navy's core
values -- honor, courage and commitment; and how their meaning
impacts the personal and professional conduct of the men and
women serving in the Navy around the world.
Thrun is a 1999 graduate of Northeast High School of St.
Petersburg, Fla. He is a 2005 graduate of University of Florida,
Gainesville, Fla. with a BS degree.

St. Pete Times & Bay News 9.
to launch political TV show
Florida's Governor Jeb Bush is sched-
uled to be the first guest on a new 30-minute
public affairs show to be launched this week
in a joint venture between the St. Petersburg
Times and Bay News 9. BN9 anchor Al
Ruechel will host "Political Connections",
which will air Sundays at 11 a.m. beginning
Oct. 30 on Bay News 9. He will be joined by
Times Political Editor Adam Smith for the
interview segment, "Political Times."
"We believe that people around Tampa
Bay have an appetite for a thoughtful show
about local and state matters," said Times
Executive Editor Neil Brown. "We're
delighted that journalists at the St. Pete
Times will team up with Bay News 9 to pro-
duce some good political TV. Amid all the
cable TV shoutfests, I think a strong public
affairs show that leads to honest dialogue
will be a hit."
"Bay News 9 is known for its election
night coverage, so creating a weekly politi-
cal show makes perfect sense," said Bay
News 9 Vice President and General
Manager Elliott Wiser.
Regular features will include inter-
views with political newsmakers, a look at
the week's political headlines, and an oppor-
tunity for one community leader each week
to get "On the Soapbox" for two minutes to
weigh in on a big issue. Viewers also will be
invited to weigh in on major issues via e-
mail and instant polls. Beginning in 2006,
the soap box segment will become interac-
tive with viewers able to vote instantly via
Bright House Nefworks ITV technolo-
gy using their remote controls
"Tampa Bay isi Florida's biggest swing
voter battleground, and we're heading into
the busiest election cycle in a long time," the
Times' Smith said. "This should be a great
opportunity for viewers to get more than
just sound bites from candidates."
Generally, the show will be taped at the
Bay News 9 studio on the Friday prior to its
Sunday broadcast. Gov. Jeb Bush is sched-
uled to be the show's first guest, subject to
the impact upon his availability of
Hurricane Wilma.

Even though an average price for a gallon of unleaded gas for
Tampa Bay area is $2.687 as of Wednesday, some gas stations were
selling unleaded for $2.49 a gallon. Just a few weeks ago, a gallon of
regular cost more than $3.00.

Rays announce change in

policy; fans may bring food

into Tropicana Field next

season

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays,
in conjunction with its conces-
sionaire Centerplate, Wednesday
announced a change in its food
policy effective for the 2006 sea-
son. For the first time in team
history, fans will be permitted to
bring food and certain drinks
into Tropicana Field for Rays
home games.
Food items in clear packag-
ing (peanut bags, re-sealable
plastic bags, etc.) in soft contain-
ers small enough to fit-under a
fan's seat will be allowed into
Tropicana Field. Snacks for chil-
dren, soft-sided juice containers
and non-alcoholic beverages are
also permitted.
The announcement comes
less than three weeks after the
Rays announced "free parking"
for the 2006 season.
"This is another important
step in our mission to make the

Tropicana Field experience more
enjoyable for our fans, and espe-
cially for families," team
President Matt Silverman said.
"The food provided by our con-
cessionaire, Centerplate, will
continue to be of the highest
quality and variety. This shift in
policy provides fans and fami-
lies the flexibility and conve-
nience to bring in snack foods
and other items that may suit
their needs."
Prohibited items include
cans, thermoses, ice chests, bot-
tles, glass containers or any
other non-collapsible container
or object deemed hazardous by
the Devil Rays.
The Rays will become the
only major professional sports
team in the Tampa Bay area to
allow fans to bring food into its
venue.

Pedestrian safety a

treat, not trick, on

Halloween

Kids love a scary Halloween
experience, but crossing the
street safely shouldn't be one
treat they miss when they're
.trolling the neighborhood for
candy. The day after Daylight
Saving Time ends has been des-
ignated Pedestrian Safety
Awareness Day by the
Pedestrian Transportation
Advisory Committee (PTAC) to
spotlight safety on our roads.
This year, that date falls on Oct.
31, which is also Halloween.
PTAC, part of the
Metropolitan Planning
Organization (MPO), was instru-
mental in providing a brochure
on transportation safety to every
'school student in Pinellas in
advance of the end of Daylight
Saving Time. A total of 150,000
copies of Be Cool, Follow the
Rules have been distributed to
senior centers, law enforcement
agencies, municipalities and pri-
vate and public schools. The
brochure has information on
pedestrian, bike, bus and driving
safety. Pinellas County Schools,

the Pinellas County Council of
the Parent Teacher Association
(PTA) and the MPO partnered to
print and distribute the safety
brochure.
Transportation safety is a
vital concern in Pinellas because
the Tampa Bay area ranks as the
nation's second most dangerous
large metropolitan area, accord-
ing to the Surface Transportation
Policy Project. (Four Florida
areas made the top five.) This
nationwide network of more than
800 organizations, devoted to
improving the nation's trans-
portation system publishes the
annual Mean Streets report that
looks at pedestrian safety.
For the past several years,
PTAC, an advisory committee to
the MPO, had advocated to
select the day after Daylight
Saving Time as the opportunity
to highlight pedestrian safety.
This year, the day selected coin-.
cided with Halloween, a time
when families are out after dark
trick-or-treating.

McCluster carries

Largo to 34-23 victory

over St. Petersburg

Candidates from page 1
pendent managerial group to
determine why there is not
enough of them and added that
Williams voted against commu-
nity police officers program. He
challenged her to bring the
proof and questioned her
integrity.
"Integrity is very impor-
tant," he said. "I would never
vote for any candidate who
could not tell the truth,"
Williams said responding to
Rice's attacks on his record.
The race for the domain
n a m e
www.earestwilliams.com also
came up during the question and
answer portion of the debate.
The web address, www.earnest-
williams.com, is registered to
Rice and her Sierra Club e-mail
address since July 2005. She
will own the name for a year.
Rice said the "light-hearted
tactic" was to show her oppo-
nent that every step of the way
she is one step ahead.
Williams found it unethical.
"This candidate would do any-
.thing at any cost to win, and that
to me is just wrong," he replied.
Both candidates brought to
attention the growing popular
tion in the city. Rice called a
"responsible leadership" as a
solution. Williams said that the
reason for the city's population
growth is the new popularity of
St. Petersburg. "Many people
discovered the city and realized
it's not a retirement communi-
ty," he said.
Both candidates agreed for
more development in Midtown.
They both would like to see
more businesses coming to the
area, they said.
According to Rice'it is
important to know that no laws
exist requiring the certain num-
ber of contractors to be minori-
ties. "It is our responsibility to
reach out and see that minorities
are the one who open businesses-
as well," said Rice. Williams
agreed.

When asked who would be
a better fit, Mayor Rick Baker or
his challenger Ed Helm,
Williams answered point blank:
Mayor Baker. "I think he has
done a wonderful job, and I will
continue to work with him."
Rice said that she has her
own race to focus on and
encouraged voters to choose
whoever they think is best for
them. "I am glad that voters
have choices," she said.
Williams, who wanted to
run for the District 55 legislative
seat, while still serving the city
council, was asked to defend his
intentions. He was planning to
run for re-election to his District
6 council seat and to run for the
state Legislature the following
year, which meant he would
serve only a year on the council.
He decided against it.
He said he decided to con-
tinue to work and support his
city and that serving two office
seats would be impossible. Rice'
said that his intentions showed
that he doesn't have interest in
his job as a city council member
when he ran for two offices at
the same time. He decided
against it when the job wasn't
available anymore," she added.
Williams invited audience
to choose real experience over
the talk.
"Look ,at my record," he
said in his closing remarks.
."Look at what she's done and
then compare the two." He said
that the city is much better than
four years.
"Voters have a choice," she
said. "We can vote for a tired,
old representation and me-too
confidence, or. we can ore for a
candidate who best fits our
future," she said in her closing
remarks.
"Experience without com-
petence ,doesn't desei\e a sec-
ond chance. It's time, for a fresh
start" she concluded.

Largo RB and future USF Bull Dexter McCluster looks for room to run against the Green Devils. Despite dealing with clamps throughout the
second half, McCluster finished with 265 yards rushing on 31 carries and scored'four touchdowns.

St. Petersburg WR Donald Bowens was named the school's
homecoming king and enjoyed this halftime ride in front of the Green
Devil's faithful.

St. Petersburg QB Steve Berthelot was hounded by the Largo
defense all night long and was forced to scramble on a number of
occasions.

Incumbent Earnest Williams commented on the record growth in
downtown St. Petersburg and city investment in midtown during his
term.
"We have a record," said Williams. "I challenge you to go look at
that record, not what somebody says, but what the record really
reveals."

Oliher Field is the first of a
series of fields the Rays will be
renovating. Other ballpark reno-
v'aions expect to extend as far
