Candidates battle controversial

issues at the. forum

St. Petersburg Council person Virginia Littrell, incumbent, talks during her opening remarks at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club on Tuesday, Sept.
13 as the Suncoast Tiger Bay Club president Bob Fisher and vice-president Cory Adler look on. Incumbent Littrell and two other District 4
candidates Leslie Curran and Kim Trombley introduced their platforms at the Tuesday's forum sponsored by the Suncoast Tiger Bay Club. Voters
in District 4 go to the polls on Sept. 27 to nominate the,City Council members for the general election runoffs.

The District 4 candidates talked about
race, prostitution and evacuation zones at
the first in the series of Suncoast Tiger Bay
Club forums on Tuesday, Sept, 13.
St. Petersburg council person Virginia
Littrell, former city council person and
Mayoral candidate Leslie Curran and politi-
cal newcomer and environmental activist
Kim Trombley, introduced their platforms
and answered questions from Tiger mem-
bers and guests at the candidates' forum.
Every seat in the race for the City
Council is being contested
Littrell pointed out the successful pro-
jects that were taking place during her term
as a city council person. She listed midtown
projects, restoration of the Manhattan Casi-
no and renovations of Mahaffey Theatre as
well as some of the new projects in the
works.
"The future is bright and now is the
time to keep the course steady," concluded
Littrell in her, opening remarks. "Together
we will create good future for this city."
Newcomer Trombley focused on the
shortage of police force in St. Petersburg
and the underpaid and overworked existing
police staff.
She said that the police workforce is
underpaid and overworked citing a statistics
that one St. Petersburg police officer covers
467 residents. She also stressed out that
Tampa's police officers are paid 25 percent

more and that St. Petersburg council was
reluctant to address the real reasons behind
'th#taff shortage. She proposed to take out
the percentage of the property tax revenue
each year to increase salaries of the St.
Petersburg police department.
When asked what has been and will be
done to regulate prostitution in the city, Lit-
trell, who, has been involved in the prostitu-
tion task force, said that the changed legisla-
ture and few amendment changes have made
it easier for the police officers to do their
job. However, the job isn't done yet. Tromb-
leydidn't comment on the prostitution ques-
tion.
The race question prompted the same
response from all three candidates. When
asked if the district 6 should have a black
council person, then should a white person
rurnfor a district 4, both Littrell and Curran
emphasized the importance of choosing the
candidate based on qualification rather than
race, while Trombley considered it to be "an
absurd question."
Cassandra Jackson, Darden Rice,
Dwight "Chimurenga" Waller, Maria Scrug-
gs-Weston and incumbent Earnest Williams
are running for District 6 seat. District 6 is,
the downtown section of St. Petersburg on
the northern boundary to Midtown on the
west to Coquina Key on the south,
, District 4 is in the northeast section of
St. Petersburg and includes parts of down-
town, Old Northeast, Woodlawn, Crescent
Lake, Crescent Heights and Allendale.
,As an aftermath to Hurricane Katrina, a
Tiger Bay member asked about the evacua-

tion zone for the District 4. Littrell called it
an honor to stand on the steps of the City
Hall with the City Council members Rick
Kriseman and James Bennett when they
announced the plans to review the city's
evacuation plan last week. Tombley added
that the city should focus on the shelters for
people with animals.
Voters in St. Petersburg districts,4 and
6 will go to the polls on Sept. 27 to nomi-
nate City Council members for the general
election runoffs. Leslie Curran served eight
years on the City Council before term limits
forced her to leave in 1997. Virginia Littrell
has served the past four years.
Curran, 49, helped build new neighbor-
hood associations while working with the
Chamber of Commerce on redevelopment
and with the community leaders on arts and
cultural plans. Littrell, 55, has offered ideas
about affordable housing, neighborhood
drug problems and limits on development
near the waterfront. She'is running for re-
election.
A third candidate Trombley is a self-
employed property manager who is con-
cerned with neighborhood crime but lacks
broader experience of her opponents. Both
current and former council member candi-
dates share similar views hut ,with different
approaches.
Council members serve a four-year
term and receive an annual salary of
$24,758. The primary-election is scheduled
for Sept. 27, and the general election for
Nov. 8.

Lifestyle Family Fitness in collabora-
tion with McDonalds and Tampa Bay's 10
WTSP-TV announced on Sept. 12 a cam-
paign called 10, 10, 10 Steps for Charity
benefiting the Ronald McDonald House, a
charity that supports comfort and care to
children and their families.
The goal of the program is to.raise
money for the Ronald McDonald House of
Tampa Bay and to educate the Tampa Bay
area community on starting a healthy
lifestyle with exercise.
Lifestyle Family Fitness participated in
the 10,10,10 Steps for Charity campaign to
promote the importance of the physical fit-
ness and to help a "great charity," said
Cheryl Dion, Lifestyle Family Fitness mar-
keting manager.
"We are just happy to be able to help a
great local charity that has been doing so
many great things for the community," Dion
said.
She. said that Lifestyle was looking for
"an opportunity to'benefit local charity"
when Tampa Bay's 10 and McDonalds
paired up with their program "Get up and get
fit."
The new partnership was established.
Dion says that the response has been great
for the new program.
"It has been mostly by word of mouth
and has been injust amazing."
Participants donate $10 and pledge to
take 10,000 steps. Each 10, 10, 10 Steps for
Charity participant receives a pedometer and
a 10-day pass to Lifestyle Family Fitness.
"They can finish all 10,000 steps in one
day or in a period of 10 days," said Dion.
Once they are done, they bring the pedome-
ter to show completed steps and receive a
free T-shirt."
"Anybody can do it," she said. "They
don't have to be members." Lifestyle Family
Center has over 120,000 members in its 27
Florida facilities in, the Tampa Bay, Orlando
and Jacksonville.
The Steps for Charity is expected to
take place throughout the month of Septem-
ber. All proceeds collected will go to the
Ronald McDonald House, a home-away-
from-home for families of pediatric patients
in area hospitals. The Ronald McDonald
House is comprised of three Houses, two in
St. Petersburg, offering a total of 66 bed-
rooms to families. The cost of staying at the
House is $10 a night.
"Based on the response, and overall suc-
cess, we would love the Steps for Charity to
become an annual thing," she said.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Irene E. Claudio, daughter of Eileen
Fries of Norfolk, Va. and Anthony Claudio of St. Petersburg, Fla., and her fel-
low shipmates took part in a community relations project during a port visit
to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, while on a scheduled deployment in support
of the Global War on Terrorism while assigned to the amphibious assault ship
USS Kearsarge homeported in Norfolk, Va.
Marines and Sailors of Claudio's unit volunteered for the project at City
of Hope, a women's shelter in Jumeirah. Volunteers painted hallways and per-
formed general repair work, while some of the servicemembers played with
the children staying at the home.
USS Kearsarge is conducting maritime security operations (MSO) in the
Persian Gulf. MSO sets the conditions for security and stability in the mar-
itime environment, as well as complements the counter-terrorism and securi-
ty efforts of regional nations. MSO denies international terrorists use of the
maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel,
weapons or other materials.
USS Kearsarge supports amphibious assault operations using Landing
Craft Air Cushions, which are specially-designed Hovercraft that travel
above land and sea surfaces to deliver vehicles and equipment. The ship also
has conventional landing craft and helicopters embarked, and is equipped
with medical facilities staffed by Navy doctors, dentists, nurses and corps-
men.
Claudio is a 1999 graduate of Woodside High School of Newport News,
Va. and joined the Navy in August 1999. For more information on the
deployment and high resolution photographs, visit the USS Kearsarge Web
site at http://www.navy.mil.

Clearwater fire and rescue team
wins first place in annual medic
competition
The team of Lt. Brent Bronson and Fire
Medic Sean McKay placed first in the ITEMS,
"International Tactical Emergency Medical Ser-
vice" 5th Annual "Medic Up" competition in San
Diego, California. The top two teams consisted of
First Place going to Clearwater SWAT Team, with
374 out of a possible 400; Second Place went to
FBI-Connecticut, with 324 out of a possible 400
points. The international competition involved
federal, military, and SWAT medics participating
in several events displaying their Emergency
Medical Services skills in tactical environments.
This is their second, first place finish in the past
three years.
"We take great pride in these two Fire
Medic's accomplishments. They perform out-
standing in their EMS positions at Clearwater Fire
& Rescue and are recognized as leaders in this
field. This competition is a testament to the true
professionalism and caliber of Clearwater Fire &
Rescue Medics and Clearwater Police SWAT,"
said Clearwater Fire Chief Jamie Geer.
"LT. Bronson and Fire Medic Mckay contin-
ue to excel at the highest levels of tactical
medicine. The ITEMS conference and competi-
tion is a real measure of where SWAT Medics are
at in terms of the environments to which we are
called. Our SWAT Team operates in harm's way
and having these two top-percenters on our team
helps us have the best chance for a positive out-
come during each operation. We are extremely
proud of them," said Clearwater Police SWAT
Commander, Lt. James D. Steffens.
The Clearwater Police Department's SWAT
Team has engaged in a select partnership with
Clearwater Fire Departments medics since 1997.
These Medics work in conjunction with the Police
Department SWAT Team to assist with providing
several functions ranging from advanced life sup-
port for the officers and civilians, forcible entry,
firefighting, personal health of the team members,
and rapid rescue skills for downed officers or
injured civilians. They assist the team during bar-
ricaded subjects, search warrants, hostage situa-
tions, disaster deployments, and dignitary protec-
tion. Since Septefrber llth, they've also played a
large roll in homeland security. The SWAT Medic
program has been in service since 1998.

Pinellas County urges all Hurricane Katrina
evacuees in the area to contact these agencies first
to access a variety of federal assistance programs:
Executive director receives top
conservation award
The 2005 recipient of the Dr. Nancy Foster
Habitat Conservation Award, Tampa Bay Watch
Executive Director Peter Clark is being recog-
nized for initiating innovative, sustained conser-
vation projects and programs and encouraging the
Tampa Bay community to become stewards of the
bay's wetland habitat.
This week, Clark will travel to Anchorage to
accept the award from the National Oceanic and
SAtmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries
Office of Habitat Conservation and the American
Fisheries Society's Estuaries Section. Established
to recognize and honor outstanding people in the
habitat conservation field, Clark is the sixth recip-
ient of award, the first of which was awarded in
May 1997.
"This award recognizes more than my per-
sonal accomplishments. It is a nod to Tampa Bay
Watch, our staff, our volunteers and everyone
who supports dur community-based programs,"
said Clark, who will receive the award at the
annual American Fisheries Society Conference.
Clark designed and initiated the Tampa Bay
Watch non-profit environmental stewardship pro-
gram in 1993. Under his watch, the organization
has coordinated more than 30,000 volunteers,
installed 2,667 oyster reef units and removed
more than 60 tons of debris from Tampa Bay
shorelines. Another program, the Bay Grasses in
Classes program has emphasized the value of
environmental protection while teaching students
how to grow salt marsh and plant the grasses into
coastal habitat.
"In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, it is crit-
ical to bring to the public's-attention how coastal
restoration projects offer natural barriers that can
help to protect against and lessen the impact of
tragedies like those we are seeing on the Gulf
coast," said Clark, whose group is responsible for
building 90 oyster bars and 60 acres of coastal
tidal marsh in Tampa Bay.
Clark served as Director of the Tampa Bay
Regional Planning Council's Agency on Bay
Management. During that time, he helped initiate
the process that led to the inclusion of Tampa Bay
in the Environmental Protection Agency's,
National Estuary Program. Clark is also the 1994,
recipient of the Outstanding Environmentalist of
the Year award from the Florida Marine Research
Institute.
;. "I'IDehember, Clrk looks forward to the
opening 'of the education and marine center in
Tierra Verde, near~f'ik entrance to Fort DeSoto
Park. The center will house the organization's
offices and serve as a coastal classroom for stu-
dents of their new environmental curriculum.

one of the nation's best places to work for moms

"Bayfront is in thebusiness of taking care of
people. Our team members are no exception,"
said President and Chief Executive Officer Sue
Brody (also a working mother). "We know it's a

considerable responsibility to care for a family
and succeed at a job. We're proud that Bayfront's
family-friendly benefits help all team members -
not just moms balance those work-life issues."

for-profit, teaching hospital. Established in 1906,
Bayfront is the Tampa Bay area's highest volume
trauma facility and the only trauma center in
Pinellas County. Bayfront is also home to Bayflite
the largest hospital-based flight program in the
Southeastern United States. Bayfront is commit-
ted to improving the health of the community it,
serves through partnerships and leadership, while
providing healthcare services that are driven by

To apply for the Working Mother 100 Best
list, Bayfront provided Working Mother magazine
with detailed information on eight areas of
work/life including: childcare, culture, flexibility,
parental leave, women's advancement, total com-
pensation, work/life culture, and family-friendly
programs. Bayfront completed a 550-question
application, which checked the availability, track-
ing and usage of programs to support working
mothers, the accountability of managers to imple-
ment programs and the successful advancement
of women into top paying jobs, board positions
and management ranks. Bayfront was also
required to submit benefits handbooks and results

Bucs Notes

Defense dominates
The Bucs' defense slowed down Minnesota Vikings' high powered offense Sunday by allowing just 26 yards
rushing on 16 carries and forcing five turnovers, including two interceptions in the final 1:45 of a 24-13 victory.
Headed toward .500
With Sunday's victory, the Bucs moved to 13-17 all-time in season openers and have won four of the last five
road season openers.
Cadillac rolls
Rookie RB Carnell "Cadillac" Williams made his first NFL game a memorable one Sunday, rushing 27 times
for 148 yards. Williams' longest run, a 71 yard touchdown scamper late in the fourth quarter, sealed the game for
Tampa Bay and made his performance the fifth-best debut in NFL history.
Smith stars
Cadillac Williams wasn't the only Buc to have a stellar NFL debut against the Vikings. TE.Alex Smith, a third
round draft pick from Stanford, caught four passes for 34 yards and scored two touchdowns.
Rice rocks
DE Simeon Rice began his bid to become this year's NFL sack king with one sack in Sunday's game. Rice also
had three tackles and forced a fumble that DT Chris Hovan recovered.
Galloway gallops
Wide receiver Joey Galloway led the Bucs with 5 catches for 97 yards.
Kelly catches
CB Brian Kelly collected the 17th and 18th interceptions of his career during Sunday's contest. He now ranks
7th all-time on the franchise list for most interceptions.
Bidwell boots
P Josh Bidwell booted six punts, averaging of 46.8 yards gross and 37.8 yards net per punt. He had one punt
inside the twenty and a long kick of 52 yards.
Griese sets mark
QB Brian Griese's second quarter touchdown pass to Smith marked-the 12th straight game that Griese has
thrown at least one scoring pass, a franchise record. Former Buccaneer QB Brad Johnson held the previous mark
set during an 11 game stretch in 2003.
Buc of the Week: Matt Bryant
Several players could stake claim to this distinction this week but perhaps most deserving is K Matt Bryant who
made his only field goal attempt, a 41-yarder, and was perfect on extra points. After utilizing a poor kicking game
last season, the Bucs are desperate for improvement this year and the success of the team may.very w.ell ride on
Bryant's leg.

Although Seminole fell behind early, the Warhawk defense tightened up in the second half and rallied thanks to the
running of Rowells.
