Floridians, not money, to talk in

Beverly Holle (standing) teaches the Keyboarding class, which is offered to clients who want to work on their computer
and keyboarding skills before going on to more complicated computer classes. The Watson Center for the Blind and
Visually Impaired, located at 6925 112th Circle North in Largo, is open Monday through Friday.

"A safe place"

By Irena Milasinovic
Staff Writer
On the first day of a 10 session
course, on their %taN to a building
unfamiliar to them, they have to
share a cab with people they don't
know.
Up to that point, aside from
themselves, they haven't met any
other visually impaired or blind peo-
ple.
At first, they sit quietly in a
group setting, sometimes teary-
eyed. By the end of the course, they
have formed friendships, exchanged
coping techniques and are on their
way to independence.
That's how clients feel during
the Independent Living Skills course
at the Watson Center for the Blind
and Visually Impaired, said Supervi-
sor of Rehablitation Jeanne Traveg-
lino. She is* also a teacher of Inde-
pendent Living Skills, a core pro-
gram that teaches adults adaptive
skills and techniques that help them
live safely and independently in
their homes and communities.
"We teach them how to write
their name, write a check, cross a
street with a cane," she said. "They
have the hardest time putting the
toothpaste onto a tooth brush."
The course that runs once or
twice a week from 10a.m. to
2:30p.m usually caters to senior cit-
izens in their 70s and 80s.
"It's really a coping program,"
said Traveglino. Some of the clients
do get frustrated. "We have to

remind them that it'll take them,
longer to do things, that they won't
be able to do two things at once."
They learn how to handle
money, cook, and answer the phone,
and practice plugging cords into
electrical sockets.
"These are all the things you
need to live independently," said
Sandra McLaughlin, development
project coordinator.
The Watson Center, with 25
staff members, is the only private
non-profit agency\ in Pinellas Coun-
ty that provides specialized services
and training to meet needs of indi-
viduals of all ages with a serious
vision loss. It is funded in part by
the Division of Blind Services and'
the State of Florida, Department of
Education and the Juvenile Welfare
Board. Grants and contributions
count for significant percentages in
the funding.
The center, often called a "safe
place" by its clients, is a 25,000
square feet facility that offers vari-
ous programs for blind and visually
impaired from vocational rehabilita-
tion for those who enter or return to
the workforce to children's services
and counseling. The center has ori-
entation and mobility rooms,
kitchens, a playroom, computers
with screen magnification and
speech software and a sight shop
equipped with low-and-high-tech
items to accommodate visually
impaired or blind people.
The children's playroom located
in the heart of the center is the "only

playroom these kids know of," said
McLaughlin.
.In the playroom the infants,
preschool and school-age children
receive education and preparation
for an independent life as adults.
Last year, the center provided
services to 3,000 people in Pinellas
County.
"We have a big job to do," said
McLaughlin, "There's an estimated
40,000 residents in Pinellas County
who are -isually impaired or blind,
so we are just tapping on the sur-
face."
One of the challenges the Wat-
son Center and Pinellas County
faces is a high percentage of visual-
ly impaired residents ages 65 and
older.
Nearing its 50th anniversary,
the center was opened as the Com-
munity Center for the Blind by the
St. Petersburg Lions Club in 1956.
Mr. and Mrs. J.B. founded Channel
Marker ten years later.
In 1984 the two agencies
merged and formed the Pinellas
Center for the Visually Impaired.
Four years ago, it was renamed Wat-
son Center for the Blind and Visual-
ly Impaired in honor of J.B. and
Muriel Watson, who is still actively
involved with the center.
To Traveglino, the center is
more than helping visually impaired
and blind.
"It is a wonderful place to
work."

News:

But you also know that I have spent
the last 17 years trying to work with
everyone, trying to listen to both
sides of every issue that I have dealt
with," said Davis.
Some of the main issues that
Davis said he would like to address
involve education.
"I am ashamed that we are near-
ly last in the nation on spending on
children's education," said Davis.
Davis talked about a "group of
people in Tallahassee" whom he said
"think they own the state" and
accused them of lacking account-
ability particularly in regards to the
current voucher system. He said
state leaders need to be more con-
cerned with preparing the state's
children for the future.
"We need to stop giving away
tax cuts and tax dollars to the well
connected in Tallahassee," said
Davis. "We are failing to do as a
state something we all know helps
children."
Topics that audience members
sought insight on during Davis'
speech included the war in Iraq and.
his potential running mate.
When asked why he voted in
favor of the war in Iraq, Davis said
he had given the president the bene-
fit of the doubt and added that if he
had the information back then that
he has today, that he would not have
voted for it.
Challenged by one questioner to
name his running mate. Da is did
not offer any hints and simply
answered "I'll choose the best per-
son.", .. .
While first going up against
state Democratic chairman Scott
Maddox of Tallahassee and state
Sen. Rod Srmth of Alachua, for the
Democratic gubernatorial nomina-
tion, Davis insisted that it will cost
at least $30-million to ultimately
gain Bush's seat but added that he'll
remain independent front his con-
tributors.
,"We'll have open and honest
debate on the merits of the issues,"
said Davis.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jim Davis spoke in St. Pete last Friday.

A walk to benefit children's nutrition

By Irena Milasinovic
Staff Writer
Their walk began where Tampa Road and
the Pinellas Trail come together. Twenty peo-
ple, led by the team leader Donna Sparks, par-
ticipated in the MannaWalk in Pinellas Coun-
ty on Saturday. The Manna Walk, a new
nationwide charitable event, raises funds to
provide nutritional programs for children,
mostly orphans who have HIV/AIDS.
The Pinellas walk was one of more than
300 MannaWalk events that were held across
the country for the first time.
"It was incredibly rewarding," said Steve
Tochtermanof the walk.
Tochterman, owner of Migun Beds in
Palm Harbor, organized and participated in the
event. The walk was supported through Man-
naTech associates and nearby businesses.

"Our walk was small." said Tochterman,
"But we collected over $600 dollars in a day."
Prior to the event, Tochterman set up an
information booth at the Pinellas Trail in Palm
Harbor that showcased the importance of
helping children with the HIV virus. Purple
arm bands, symbolizing "medically chal-
lenged children," were sold for $10 a piece.
"Some people donated one dollar and others
donated $100," he said. "Participants loved it.
They are excited to do it next year and contin-
ue the momentum."
Tochterman said that the walk wasn't
advertised well because they "decided to do
this about six or eight weeks ago." But he
looks forward to the next year's walk. "Now
that we are up and running, we'll get more ads
and sponsors."
All the money raised from MannaWalk
goes to a MannaRelief, a non-profit organiza-

tion that provides nutritional supplement pro-
grams overseen by doctors around the globe.
Manna Relief is designed to provide glyconu-
trional products to orphans and medically
fragile children under the age of 19.
Organized in 1999 and headquartered in
Grand Praire, Texas, MannaRelief is the char-
itable arm of MannaTech, which holds the
patents and manufactures various lines of gly-
conutrients products. MannaTech funds all the
administrative services of Manna Relief, and
sells its product to the organization at the man-
ufacture's price. MannaRelief serves 150
orphanages around the world.
"We are looking in relatively inexpensive
ways to help countries with high HIV/AIDS
population," Tocheterman said. "Nutrients are
designed to boost the immune system."
He went on to say that some of the chil-
dren are so sick that they don't receive medical

assistance. "Nutrients get their immune sys-
tem back on again, and then they can get their
medication."
They help lessen the side effect of
chemotherapy or radiation while helping the
body to recover and heal more quickly than if
only the treatments were implemented. A
study from the Harvard School of Public
Health asserted that nutritional supplements
can help keep the AIDS virus'in a human body
in check and delay its symptoms.
MannaRelief has joined with Hal
Uplinger, executive producer of the well-
known LiveAID and SportAID concerts, to
produce a series of concerts benefiting the
Global AIDS Awareness program called "One
Day, One World." Concerts in India, Great
Britain, Africa, Russia, China and the United
States will be held to raise awareness and
funds for HIV/AIDS causes.

By Carter Chase
Staff Writer
Democratic gubernatorial can-
didate Jim Davis last Friday pledged
to instill a leadership, should he be
elected next year, which will lend
more credence to the voice of
Floridians and less to dollar bills.
The Tampa congressman,
speaking to more than 100 people at
a meeting of the Suncoast Tiger Bay
Club in St. Petersburg, asserted that
the Republican-controlled Capitol is
dominated by special interest money
and that Floridians need and deserve
a stronger voice in Tallahassee.
"If you are looking for a candi-
date for governor that's going to talk
about our values as Floridians what
makes us special, how we come
together to build something, a better
Florida, a better home for our chil-
dren and grandchildren, please join
me," said Davis.
,Davis said he would "take the
for sale sign off the state Capitol"
and help facilitate, open debate,
which he believes has dwindled dur-
ing Gov. Jeb Bush's administration.
"We need Republicans and
Democrats. talking again," said
Davis. "Debate makes us stronger,
not weaker. I'm going to open the
doors back up in the governor's
office and in the legislature to make
sure the voice of all Floridians is
heard in our state government."
While Davis stated that there is
a need to "clean house" in Tallahas--
see, he declared that he n ould not be
out to- bash Bush during.his cam-.
paign.
"If you are looking.for a candi-
date for a governor who's going to
spend the next year tearing down the
Bushes, I am not your. candidate,"
said Davis.
An attorney and former' state
legislator, Davis explained to, the
crowd at the St. Petersburg Yacht
Club that it he is a reasonable candi-
date for the governor's chair because
of his willingness to consider vari-
ous perspectives.
"Those of you who know me
know that I am a proud Democrat.

Military news

Navy Airman Stephen K. Fowler, son of Kellie J. Mullen of Clearwa-
ter, Fla., recently returned from deployment while assigned to the aircraft
carrier USS Carl Vinson, homeported in Norfolk, Va.
Fowler and more than 7, 600 of his shipmates of the Carl Vinson Carri-
er Strike Group deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi
Freedom (OIF) and the Global War on Terrorism.
Carl Vinson and Carrier Air Wing 9 launched more than 6, 500 sorties,
totaling more than 20, 000 flight hours in support of OIF and maritime secu-
rity operations. Fowler's unit made port visits in Manama, Bahrain, Dubai,
and United Arab Emirates. They also conducted 13 community relations
projects, helping to build schools, shelters and churches.
Carriers like the Carl Vinson are deployed throughout the world to
maintain U.S. presence and provide rapid response in times of crisis. They
serve as a highly visible deterrent to would-be aggressors, and are equipped
with the most versatile and powerful weapons and aircraft available.
Fowler joined the Navy'in August 2003.
Navy Airman Britt N. Nevitt, son of James C. Nevitt of Largo, Fla.,
and his shipmates made a port visit to Sydney, Australia while assigned to
the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.
On the first day of the visit, Nevitt's ship hosted a reception for more
than 1, 000 Australian dignitaries, and conducted tours for more than 3, 000
guests.
Also drawing the interest of both Sailors and local Australians was the
Hospitality-in-the-Homes program, sponsored by Kitty Hawk's religious
ministries department, in which local Sydney families hosted Sailors in their
homes for a meal.
USS Kitty Hawk is the first of the "super carriers, commissioned April
29, 1961. They serve as a highly visible deterrent to would-be aggressors,
and are equipped with the most versatile and powerful weapons and aircraft
available.
Nevitt is a 2002 graduate of Osceola High School of Largo, Fla. and
joined the Navy in October 2002. For more information on the deployment
and high resolution photographs, visit USS Kitty Hawk's Web site at
http://www.kittyhawk.navy.mil.
Navy Capt. Bruce K. Bohnker, whose wife, Jacqueline, is the daugh-
ter of Sally A. and Donald D. Phillips of Clearwater, Fla., recently retired
after 32 years of outstanding service in the U.S. Navy while serving as
Director of Population Health assigned to Navy Environmental Health Cen-
ter, Portsmouth, Va.

member companies of The Financial Services
Roundtable will hold a groundbreaking'ceremony
for the Financial Services Roundtable House at
1508 Preston St. S. in St. Petersburg on Saturday,
August 13, 2005. This is part of the national
Financial Services Community Build Day, an
annual event, sponsored by national organization
the Financial Services Roundtable, which brings
together volunteers from many financial services
companies normally competitors to build
homes across the nation for Habitat for Humani-
ty. "Financial institutions are day-to-day competi-
tos in 'b~Eness and it is great for themto put that
aside, and band together with both financial and
volunteer support to help our mission to eliminate
substandard housing in our community," said
Pinellas Habitat for Humanity executive director
Barbara Inman.
The local offices of Financial Services
Roundtable member companies AmSouth Bank,
AEGON/Western Reserve Life Assurance,
BB&T, Raymond James Financial, State Farm@,
and Wachovia have provided major funding for
the house and will also supply many of the vol-
unteers to construct the house. The land for the
house was donated by the City of St. Petersburg
and is one of over sixty lots that they have donat-
ed to Pinellas Habitat for Humanity. Representa-
tives from Pinellas Habitat for Humanity, the par-
ticipating companies and the City of St. Peters-

ed 125 homes for struggling families in Pinellas
County since it began building in 1985. Volun-
teers and the future homeowners construct the
homes, which are sold at no profit and financed
with a no-interest loan. The mortgage monies are
used to build even more homes, making each
donation to Habitat a perpetual legacy to the com-
munity. Habitat believes that home ownership
contributes to family stability, leading in turn to
community stability.

for Humanity; contact (727) 536-4755 or consult
the website at www.phfh.org
The mission of The Financial Services
Roundtable is to unify the leadership of large
integrated financial services companies in pursuit
of three primary objectives: to be the premier
forum in which leaders of the United States finan-
cial services industry determine and influence the
most critical public policy issues that shape a
vibrant, competitive marketplace and a growing
national economy; to promote the interests of
member companies in federal legislative, regula-
tory, and judicial forums; and to effectively com-
municate the benefits of competitive and integrat-
ed financial services to the American Public.

Proposed property tax notices on
the way
Pinellas County Property Appraiser Jim
Smith will mail a Notice of Proposed Property
Taxes, also known as a Truth in Millage (TRIM)
Notice, to each property owner in Pinellas Coun-
ty on Monday, Aug. 15.
The Property Appraiser's office determines
the assessed value of property. The office then
provides the taxing authorities with the accurate
and uniform property values, and county authori-
ties use those values to establish their tax'rates
(also known as millage rates).
A TRIM notice informs the property owner
of the estimated market value of his or her prop-
erty as of Jan. 1. Market value means the amount
in cash a willing buyer would pay a killing sell-
er, less the cost of the sale (for example, docu-
ment stamps, broker's and attorney's fees, etc.).
Tax bills mailed by the Tax Collector in Novem-
ber will be based on hdus notice.
If you have questions about the information
on a TRIM notice, call the Property Appraiser's
office right away, and an appraiser will discuss
the valuation with you. If after conferring with an
appraiser you believe your value is higher than
market value on Jan. 1, 2005, you may file a peti-
tion with the Pinellas County Value Adjustment
Board (VAB). (The VAB has voted to collect a
$15 nonrefundable filing fee for petitions to the
board, and petitions must be filed with the Clerk
of the Circuit. Court.)
"We're still seeing value increases," Smith
said. "Property values, mainly land' values, have
risen substantially in the last few years due to
speculators, low interest rates and new develop-
ment. And lots of people don't mind paying big
money for real estate in Florida."
Smith's office has produced a video, How to
Challenge Your Appraisal, to assist anyone wish-
ing to file a petition. It can be seen on Pinellas
Channel 18 throughout August or rented .from
your local library.
