July's Santa Claus hands out a backpack to a Boys and Girls Club member while others wait in line. Larry Gilhousen,
director of resource development for the Suncoast Boys and Girls Clubs dressed as a Santa Claus for the "Backpack to
School" program held at the Pinellas Park Boys and Girls Club and sponsored by the Lighthouse Credit Foundation. About
180 bacpacks were given out on Monday, July 25.

It was Christmas in July for
members of the Pinellas Park Boys
and Girls Club as they received free
backpacks on Monday, July 25.
The program "Backpack to
School", in its fourth year, was
sponsored by the Lighthouse Credit
Foundation. The organization pro-
vided lunch and backpacks donated
by Bay area businesses including
Wal-Mart, Publix Supermarket
Charities, Sweet, Tomatoes, Winn
Dixie, Caspers Company, Sam's
' Club; and Gerdau Ameristeel, the
foiirth largest steel company in
North America.
Lighthouse Credit Foundation
president and Boys and Girls Club
board member Mary Melcer found-
ed the relationship between the two
organizations. Lighthouse Credit
Foundation, is a non-profit agency
that provides financial counseling,
education and assistance to individ-
uals in need or with limited
resources.
The purpose of the collabora-
tion is to get children excited about!
the upcoming school year and
inspire them to look forward to a
new year of learning with the back-
to-school essentials.
Georgette DeSalvo, a technical
writer and project coordinator for
Lighthouse added that the program
is designed to enable kids to enter
the new school year with the basic
supplies they need to succeed,
"Children were extremely excit-

ed," DeSalvo said. "It was a wonder-
ful to see that all the'donors showed
generosity of the community."
About 180 children from the
Pinellas Park Boys and Girls Club
were handed out backpacks in the
entry area of the club facility, locat-
ed at 7790 61st Street North.
Founded in 1968, the Pinellas Park
Boys and Girls club serves more
than 250 children between the ages
6-18.
John Atkins, program director
for the Pinellas Park Boys and Girls
Club, gave praise to the Lighthouse
Credit Foundation.
"I thought it was great. Light-
house does such a great job, they are
so giving," he said. "I have never
seen anything like this," said Atkins,
who attended Boys and Girls club
when he was younger.
Lighthouse Credit Foundation
and the Boys and Girls Club weren't
the only ones who were giving out
backpacks prior to the back-to-
school week.
The Office Depot, located on
7711 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
Street in St. Petersburg, presented
free backpacks to four non-profit
organizations in Pinellas County on
.Tuesday, July 26. The organizations
present were Pinellas County
Schools, AIDS Service Association
of Pinellas, Inc., Pinellas County
Urban League, Inc, and R'Club
Child Care.
Office Depot donated back-
'packs containing school supplies to
non-profit organizations, elementary

schools and agencies across th
country to ensure that underpriv
leged kids will be able to start th
news school year with the essenti
supplies they need to succeed, sai
Kenny Maxwell, the Gatewa
Office Depot store manager.
"Our National Backpack Pr
gram is one of the ways that w
show how much we value educ2
tion, but more importantly chi
dren," said Maxwell during the pre
sentation ceremony in the store.
Office Depot plans to dona
more than 300,000 backpacks i
non-profit organization and unde
privileged schools.
"It has grown tremendously
Maxwell said.
The first year, in 2001, Offic
Depot donated 50,000 backpack
around the country.
The program plans to expand
For the first time, the program wa
publicly announced and onlir
requests became available.
It provided the opportunity fi
many organizations to receive bad
packs for the first time, Maxwe
said.
In the previous years, each store
chose its non-profit organization
wanted to sponsor. This year, Pine
las County district of Office Dep(
stores combined together to dona
backpacks to unprivileged kids.
This year, in St. Petersbur

It seems as though the word 'if does not exist in the
vocabulary of Scott Farrell. Farrell, who is running for
the U.S.conigressional district seat being vacated by Jim
Davis, is an optimistic, pro-active candidate with high
hopes and even bigger aspirations for his state, not if,
but "when" he is elected next year.
"In our house we stay positive and say 'when we
win,'" said the 38-year-old Tampa lawyer, who was born
in the nation's capital.
Not only is Farrell staying positive, he is campaign-
ing hard in his heavily gerrymandered district,, which
consists of portions of Hillsborough, Manatee and Pinel-
las County, to meet the voters and learn about their con-
cerns.
"You have to go out there and talk to people to learn
the issues," said Farrell, who is a Democrat. "That's
what we've been doing. We're spending as much time
working in the community and meeting people and lis-
tening to different issues as we are raising money."
Farrell's campaign is off to a fast start, as it has
raised over $80,000. According to Farrell, raising
money is only half the battle for a political seat that is
almost certain to remain Democratic. The seat is in an
area that favors Democrats by a 2-1 margin. Whoever
wins the primaries is in the driver's seat to be the next
District 11 representative.
"The race I'm in today, although TV and money is
important, it comes down to voter contact," he
explained. "Raising money is important, but learning

what people need is just as important if not more impo
tant. You need the money to get the message out their
but you need to know what
the issues are in those dif-
ferent neighborhoods."
Farrell isn't new to the
political game. He ran for
the state House of Repre-
sentatives in 2002 against
Faye Culp, who had once
held the seat and, according
to Farrell, had the advan-
tage of an incumbent.
While Culp won that elec-
tion, Farrell won a. few
lessons in his rookie debut as FARRELL
a candidate.
"When I started to run in 2002 I never knew how
run a campaign," said Farrell. "I learned that you hav
to trust your instincts. You have so many people'tellir
you how to run a campaign. There is some clarity r'o
and I know exactly what I'm doing and the decisions th
are made now, are going to be by me."
Now that he knows more about running a campaign
Farrell can get to work on the principles and values th
he stands firmly behind. Farrell, whose mother is a pul
lic school teacher, is a big advocate of education
woman's choice and public safety.

Clearwater

Staff Wrter
The county's Democratic and
Republican Party heads collided on
Thursday July 21 at the Feather-
sound Country Club in Clearwater.
Members of the Suncoast Tiger
Bay Club were on hand to witness
the showdown between Republican
Party Chairman Tony DiMatteo and
Democratic Party Chairwoman Car-
rie Wadlinger.
Both leaders spoke about prin-
ciples behind their parties and what
direction they will be taking in the
upcoming election year.

Pinellas County Republican
re Chairman Tony DiMatteo and
it Democratic Chairwoman Carrie
,I- Wadlinger squared off at the
ot Feathersound Country Club in
te Clearwater on Thursday July 21. Both
parties are getting an early jump on
g, 2006 elections in Pinellas County.
be Wadlinger's party has raised between
id $35,000 and $40,000, while
ce DiMatteo's Republican Party has
raised $140,000.
DiMatteo spoke first of his
Republican Party which has recently
dominated elections in the United
States as well as Florida. 'In the
2006 election, DiMateo foresees
Republicans maintaining control.
"I define my job as getting good
republicans elected to office," he
r- said. "I don't intend to lose any state
e, house seats, I intend to gain some."
The Republican Party currently
holds 18 of the 25 seats in the
U.S.House of Representatives from
the state of Florida.
DiMatteo, who owns a local
pest control business, also spoke
about his displeasure toward non
partisanship. He is a strong support-
er of party identification, particular-
ly, when it comes to the non parti-
sanship in the school board and the
judicial branch of the government.
"I hate non partisanship," he
stated. "How would everyone here
like to go to the supermarket and
to find a supermarket full of these
ve (holding up a can with no label)?
ng And they say, 'hey, you want to buy
w them?' No one knows what it is.
at Labeling helps you decide what you
want to buy."
n, After lamenting about labels,
at DiMatteo turned the page to reap-
b- portionment, as. he bashed
n, Democrats for wanting to change a
law that has been in place for over a
hundred years.
7 "Right now the big fuss is over
reapportionment because Republi-
cans drew the lines for the first time

in 122 years," he said. "Well excuse
me folks. We gained control over
Congress and the presidency, the
state house and the state senate with
democratic (reapportionment) lines.
That should tell them something."
DiMatteo believes that reappor-
tionment should stay the same and
that Democrats that have a problem
with it should stop complaining. His
Republican Party had to deal with
the same reapportionment issue.
"If the people that are against
(reapportionment) keep whining,
they will never start winning," he
said. "Cause whiners are not win-
ners."
Wadlinger had a few sarcastic
jabs for DiMatteo when she finally
stepped up to the podium;
"Thank you Tony for giving a
good explanation of what's going on
in Pinellas County," she grinned.
"Cause now I don't have to."
Wadlinger used the analogy of
the three bay area bridges and the
people they were named after to
help explain the direction and pur-
pose of her Democratic Party.
"I feel a special kinship between
Howard Franklin, Courtney Camp-
bell "Dads" Gandy ard I, not just
because I frequently UsC those
causeways and bridges, but because
like me, they are proud Democrats.
They symbolize bringing together
two diverse communities."
According to Wadlinger, that is
one of her main goals; to bring peo-'
ple together.
She believes that mainstream
,America is on the same page as the
Democratic Party in terms of issues.
"Like America, we are middle
of the road centrists with strong
rooted positions that effect people's
lives," she said.
Wadlinger used a recent poll
she found to explain America's
stance on the current administra-
tion's performance.
"Three out of five American's
believe that this president and his
administration do not have the same
priorities for citizens of this coun-
try," she said. "In fact the priorities
reflect an abuse of power."
Her goal is to show residents of
Pinellas County that Democrats
have the same beliefs as the Ameri-
can people, which she hopes, will
correlate with more votes for her
party.
"The Democratic Party is the
party of the people," Wadlinger stat-
ed. "It is a party of the people, by
the people and for the people."
Other goals for her party
include, continued'endorsement for
smaller class size, better prescription
drug coverage and more health care
insurance for the three million unin-
sured Floridians.
Despite setting records for hav-
ing raised more money for their
party in a non-presidential election
year, the Democratic Party is being
significantly out-raised by its coun-
terpart.
The Democratic Party has
raised between $35,000 and $40,000
while the Republican Party has
raised $140,000.
Both party leaders know the
importance of winning a mixed bag
of voters in Pinellas County. This
may be the reason why both are
working hard to raise money for
next year's elections. President
Bush lost Pinellas County to Al
Gore in 2000 by four percent of the
vote and defeated John Kerry last
year by 226 votes.

08/05/05 Davis is a party-line Democrat's dream. While in Tallahas-
see, among his most passionate fights was for the class size amendment and,
a ban on offshore drilling. Can we say veto? In Washington, he's been an
Outspoken voice against the privatization of Social Security. How many
Bushes can he irritate? Now in the race for the Governor's mansion, he's
considered a truly viable candidate. He's got the public image, the name
recognition, and certainly the fund-raising acumen. But, can he break the
party trend in a climate that's clearly turned red recently? Join the Suncoast
Tiger Bay Club to hear this candidate's message.

Revised Pinellas County
evacuation level maps now
available online
Pinellas County Emergency Management
has completed a detailed review of hurricane
evacuation maps and posted the updated maps on
the county Web site: www.pinellascounty.org.
Emergency Management staff began updat-
ing evacuation levels early last month in order to
apply new technology to the process of determin-
ing these levels. Evacuation levels are based on
elevation and models predicting the amount of
water pushed ashore by a storm (surge). This
technology has added precision and more detail in
the mapping of storm surge hazards. County staff
has been working closely with representatives
from the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council
(TBRPC) to review maps and ensure the highest
level of accuracy possible. As a result of this
review, there have been further refinements to
mandatory evacuation levels. We can now pro-
vide residents with the most accurate evacuation
level data Pinellas County has ever made avail-
able.
"In the past, we had to make some judgment
calls based on a more generalized process," said
Gary Vickers, Emergency Management director.
Vickers also stressed that the process is evolving
as even better storm flood data becomes available
and residents may see further changes next year.
However, this is the final review for the 2005 hur-
ricane season.
The Pinellas County Web site, www.pinellas-
county.org, now reflects all revisions in evacua-
tion levels. Residents who do not have access to a
computer or who have questions may call (727)
464-3800 for assistance.
Updated evacuation levels are available
online at www.pinellascounty.org. Click on
"Check Your Evac Level" in the left column.
Additional operators are on duty today and
tomorrow to answer residents' questions about
evacuation levels. Call (727) 464-3800 for this
assistance.
Pinellas County will soon begin notifying
residents that their evacuation levels may have
changed by placing automated phone calls to res-
idents and businesses using the CityWatch Alert
Notification System.
The next billing cycle of Pinellas County
Utilities bills will reflect the final revisions to the
2005 evacuation level maps.
A postcard notifying affected residents of any
changes in their evacuation level will be mailed
this month..
The new maps will be inserted in the St.
Petersburg Times on July 31, 2005. Additional
copies will be available at various locations
throughout the county by early August.
Pinellas County and University of
Florida announce new extension
director
Pinellas County Administrator Stephen M.
Spratt and Larry Arrington, dean of the Institute
of Food and Agricultural Sciences at the'Univer-
sity of Florida,.announce the appointment of
Mary Campbell as director of Pinellas County
Extension.
Campbell will assume her new position Aug.
4. Since 1986, Campbell has served as park oper-
ations manager with the St. Petersburg Parks
Department. She earned a master's degree in hor-
ticultural science and a bachelor's degree in agri-
culture from UF.
"We are very fortunate and excited to have
attracted Ms. Mary Campbell to be our new
Pinellas County Extension director," said Dean
Arrington. "Her 19 years of diverse administra-

tion and program development experience will
assist her in leading a talented group of faculty
and staff as well as a total Extension program."
As Extension director, Campbell will man-
age, supervise and coordinate the Extension pro-
gram and staff. She will work with Extension
administration, county staff, community leaders,
private sector entities and the general public.
Campbell will oversee the programs and faculty
of urban and commercial horticulture, 4-H, and
family and consumer sciences. In her new posi-
tion she will develop educational programs to
meet community needs in a growing urban setting
interfacing with large-scale commercial agricul-
ture.
Both UF and county officials say the new
appointment confirms the strong partnership
between the university and the county and will
enhance collaborative efforts with continued
quality educational programs through Campbell's
leadership. Funding for the Extension position is
shared, with the university paying 60 percent and
the county paying 40 percent.
"Partnerships like this strengthen both enti-
ties," Spratt said. "The county Extension as well
as the university programs can grow and flourish
by combining our resources and extending our
sphere of influence."
Pinellas County/University of Florida Exten-
sion is part of a nationwide network of communi-
ty educational centers providing research-based
information to America's citizens. It is based on
the Federal Land-Grant concept established in the
early 1900s to "extend" university resources to
the people where they live. Locally, Extension is
a cooperative partnership between Pinellas Coun-
ty government and the University of Florida in
Gainesville.
Pinellas County announces
hometown heroes down payment
assistance program
In an effort to help workers in critical profes-
sions purchase a home in Pinellas County,. the
county's Community Development Department
announces the Hometown Heroes down payment
assistance program. The rapidly escalating cost of
housing has made i't difficult for vital service per-
sonnel to live in the county.
"This program was designed to assist our res-
idents that are part of the critical workforce base
to continue to live and work in our county," said
Darlene Kalada, director of Community Develop-.
ment.
The program will provide residents that are
full-time employees of the Pinellas County
School Board, urban county police and fire
departments or hospital workers with the oppor-
tunity to borrow up to $20,000 at 0 percent inter-
est to pay for their down payment and closing
costs when purchasing a property in the county.
Purchase price and income limits apply for
this program.
Clearwater names new assistant
city manager
City Manager Bill Home announced today
the. selection of Rod Irwin as the new Assistant
City Manager fr 'the City of Clearwater. In
Irwin's new appointment, he will oversee the
city's CRA and economic development activities,
as well as.the city's primary enterprise operations,
which include Clearwater Gas System and Solid
Waste/General Services.
"I'm excited about the opportunities that
Clearwater presents. It's a beautiful, well-run city
and I think that there's great potential to fprge
partnerships "that will continue the community's
economic growth," said Irwin.
Irwin currently serves as the Strategic Pro-

jects Manager for Arlington County, Virginia and
has previously held .several city and county man-
agement positions in the northeast. He has a B.A.
in Political Science from the University of Ten-
nessee and a M.P.A. from City University of New
SYork.

ter on July 28.
Steps to a healthier Pinellas
Model Community kick-off
Kenneth City, one of the four Steps to a
Healthier Florida-Pinellas communities, has been
designated as the site of. a Steps Model Commu-
nity project. The Model Community project will
bring educational and fitness classes to the com-
munity at the project center located at Blanton
Elementary. Blanton will open its doors after
school to provide classes for the community.
"This is not just a project for the school chil-
dren," stated John P. Heilman, M.D., M.P.H.,
Pinellas County Health Department director. "We
want everyone in the community to rally around
this project that will focus on making a healthier
community in areas of nutrition, diabetes, obesi-
ty, physical activity, asthma and tobacco cessa-
tion."
The kick-off for the Model Community,
titled Kenneth City Stepping to a Healthier Pinel-
las, will be held in the parking lot of the Winn
Dixie, (5801 54th Avenue N.) on August 13 from
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Winn Dixie will provide
free diabetes monitors and tests strips for those in
need. The Kenneth City Fire Department will be
on hand with free snow cones and popcorn. Free
health screenings will also be available that day.
At a community meeting last fall, a resident
suggested that a "Model Community" be devel-
oped for the Steps program that could be easily
replicated on a larger scale if successful. After
surveying several neighborhoods, the Kenneth,
City area was selected. "The community has a
nice blend of young, middle-aged, retirees and
seniors," said Trevella Sparks, Steps Community
Model Coordinator. "We think we can have a pos-
itive impact with all of these groups."
The Steps to a Healthier Florida-Pinellas pro-
gram is a five-year federal grant that targets six
health areas and, four cities in Pinellas County.
The goal is to improve the health of these com-
munities through better nutrition, more exercise,
and tobacco cessation.

Billy Bob Thorton is back for a second go round of crude humor since he brashly
graced the screen two years ago portraying a "Bad Santa." This time he is playing a foul
mouthed drunken little league coach in another summer remake, "The Bad News Bears."
The 2005 version of the "Bad News Bears" follows the same premise as the 1976 movie
that starred Walter Matthau as alcoholic coach, Morris Buttermaker.
After being thrown out of a game in the early 80's for fighting an umpire, Butter-
maker's life goes down the drain along with his dreams of becoming a major league base-
ball player. Fast forward to 2005 where Buttermaker is an alcoholic exterminator, des-
perate for money and bitter about life.
When an attorney sues the league for discriminating against 'sub-par' players that
couldn't make the cut, Buttermaker is approached to coach the local team of misfits. The
2005 movie.has most of the same players as its counterpart: a black kid named Ahmad
Abdul Rahim (K.C. Harris), two Spanish speaking players Miguel and Jose Agilar (Car-
los and Emmanuel Estrada), a hot tempered blonde kid named Tanner Boyle (Timmy
Deters) and the heavy set signal caller Mike Engelberg (Brandon Craggs). The new play-
ers that are added to the 2005 team are a kid in a wheel chair, an Indian and an Armeni-
an kid who seeks approval from his strict father.
The team starts the season in 'bad news' fashion, getting pummeled in their first two
games. Rival coach Roy Bullock (Greg Kinnear) belittles Buttermaker as he tries to force
the Bears to quit. The prideful and competitive Buttermaker quickly turns to his former

girlfriend's child, Amanda Whurlitzer (Sammi Kraft) and a local motorcycle punk, Kelly
Leak (Jeff Davies), to turn his team around.
The same cliche applies in this sports movie, just like it does in many like it. The
coach gets over competitive and puts winning in front of his players, until finally he real-
izes that having fun and playing the game right is the right thing to teach kids about life.
For this reason, many of these movies rely on its actors to carry the movie. And Thorton
does just that in "The Bad News Bears."
Thorton takes Matthau's character to a different self-loathing level. He plays the pity
role to perfection as the audience is appalled and humored at the same time by his raunchy
humor. Thorton has a way to make the audience love and hate him at the same.time, all
the while, keeping the jokes coming.
Director Richard Linklater keeps the same aura of the 1976 movie, but uses a style
that is more accustomed to today's moviegoer. He somehow tones down the racial humor
that made the first movie a bit vulgar, but ads more profanity and toilet humor. Linklater
takes advantage of today's irony of racism and profanity in "The Bad News Bears." He
substitutes the 'racist' comments that made the first movie famous, replacing them with
11-year-olds flipping birds and cursing in just about every scene.
"The Bad News Bears" is another admirable summer remake. Like the 2005 movie
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "The Bad News Bears" takes the original movie and
ads more depth to its characters and more flare to its plot. So what does this mean for
moviegoers? As the Bears would say..."Bad News for the moviegoers!" In a good way,
of course. Grade B

"I believe people have the right
to have a safe place to live and the
right. to have a public education
that's first rate," he said. "Those are
things I'm going to fight for from
day one." .
Farrell' seems to be most
adamant about education. He didn't
grow up in a wealthy family and
graduated from the University of
Florida College of Law with the
help of student loans. He firmly
believes that quality education
should be for everyone, not just a
selected few.
"Everybody should have a fair
chance for a better education regard-
less of the size of their pocket book
or their last name," he said. "With-
out the state system I wouldn't have
the opportunities I do. So I'm real
passionate about that."
Farrell is also looking to make

some changes in the small business.
sector, which he deals with at Tre-
nam Kemker law firm, where he is a
Corporate lawyer. He is very con-
cerned with the economy and wants
to see more jobs created.
"I see businesses that have 10 to
12 employees struggling to purchase
health insurance," he said. "I've seen
businesses shut down because they
couldn't afford to pay it. That's not
the type of economy that I want to
see."
If, or as in Farrell's house; when
he "wins" the seat, he can begin
climbing his way up the political lad-
der in Florida. In the meantime, he
may have to work hard to win a
Democratic Primary that will be
stacked with various candidates.
So far Farrell's opponents
include Les Miller, Michael Stein-
berg, and Kathy Castor.

Feaster, Tortorella signed to long-term

contract extensions

The 2004 Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning have signed
Executive Vice President & General Manager Jay Feaster and Head Coach
John Tortorella to long-term contract extensions, team President Ron Camp-
bell announced Wednesday. These extensions guarantee Feaster will remain
with'the organization through the 2010-1.1 season while Tortorella is'com-
mitted to the Lightning through 2008-09. Tortorella's previous contract was
due to expire at the end of the 05-06 season, while the team held an option
on Feaster for the 2006,07 season.
"When Ron approached us to discuss these extensions our answer was
certainly to do the right thing," said team owner Bill Davidson. "Jay and
John have done great work for us and we have a lot of trust in both of them
and their team-first philosophy. In light of the new CBA, it was important to
solidify the key management who will allow us to retain and attract the best
talent for continued on-ice success in the future."
"We couldn't be happier with both Jay and John," Campbell said. "The
success pf winning is not reason alone to give them extensions at this time.
Before the Stanley Cup Championship, and since, both have exhibited qual-
ities to make you want to keep this team together for a long time. They have
gained the respect of our players, those in and around ihe National Hockey
League, and just about everyone in' the Tampa Bay community. With the rat-
ification of the new CBA and after a few meetings with player agents, it was
apparent they wanted to know what the future of the Lightning franchise
would look like. We are pleased to represent a very stable future."
"From the first day John Tortorella joined this organization he came in
preaching 'team concept' and 'team first,"' Feaster said. "It was that steadfast
commitment to team and to doing things 'the right way' that enabled us to

become Stanley Cup Champions. John and I share a vision of the 'Tampa
Bay Way' and a commitment.to doing everything possible to put our team
and our players in a position to win and to enjoy playing the game. It is
exciting to know that we will be together for a long-time trying to add to our
recent on-ice and organizational success."
Feaster joined the Lightning organization as assistant general manager
on October 20, 1998 and he was named general manager on February 10,
2002. Honored as the NHL Executive of the Year in 2004 by The Sporting
News, Feaster has guided the Lightning to a record of 89-58-29-13 in 189
games. In addition to the 2004 Stanley Cup, the Lightning captured back-to-
back Southeast Division titles in 2002-03 and 2003-04 and finished with the
top record in the Eastern Conference in 2003-04. Recognized throughout the
NHL for his business acumen and careful, strategic planning, Feaster served
as co-General Manager for Team USA for the 2003 World Championships.
Tortorella captured his first Jack Adams Trophy as the NHL's Coach of
the Year following the 2003-04 season after finishing second in the voting
the previous season. He led the Lightning to it's first division championship
and its second playoff berth in only his second full season behind the bench,
and followed that up with a second division title and the Stanley Cup in
2003-04. He joined the Lightning as an. assistant coach before the 2000-01
season, taking over the head position on January 6, 2001. His record with
the team is 121-114-36-18 in his four seasons as head coach, but the Light-
ning are 35 games over .500 in the past two seasons under Tortorella.
Known for his up-tempo system, Tortorella served as an assistant coach for
Team USA at the 2005 World Championships.

Aubrey Huff earned shining Ray of the week for his recent grand slams. He
had two of them in a five game span. As of Wednesday, Huff was third in the
American League in RBI since the All-Star break with 13.

Rays Notes

Catching fire?
Heading into Thursday the Rays were 8-5 since the All-Star break.
Only two other major league clubs have been hotter than the Rays, the Oak-
land A's 10-3 and the Houston Astros 9-4. That was the Rays best stretch of
10 or more games in over a year.
Giant Killers
As of Thursday, the Rays were 11-10, against American League East
superpowers, the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. They were 9-
29 against them a year ago.
Blown saves
The Rays suffered their .19th blown save of the season on Tuesday
against the Red Sox. That tied the Colorado Rockies for a major league
high. It was the llth time the Rays have lost after taking the lead in the
eighth inning or later.
Breaking news
As of Wednesday, the Rays were batting .296 since the All-Star break,
sixth best in the majors. Outfielder Damon Hollins (.417) and shortstop
Julio Lugo (.392) were leading them. The Rays were also 15 for 15 in steal
attempts since the break.
You go Lugo
Lugo started the month going 3-24 in his first six games. In his previ-
ous 16 games heading intoWednesday, however, he was 30-66 (.455) and
his .367 average in July was the fourth highest in the American League.
Lugo was on pace for 192 hits and 48 steals. Only two other shortstops have'
accomplished that feat. One of them is hall-of-famer Honus Wagner.
CC aiming for Honus and Cobb
As of Wednesday outfielder Carl Crawford was on pace for 53 steals,
196 hits and 87 RBI. Since 1900 only Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb 'hve
reached those numbers in a season.
Lou, catching up to Clark Griffith
On July 14, with a win against the Toronto Blue Jays, Rays Manager
Lou Piniella moved past Hall of Fame skipper Earl Weaver for sole posses-
sion of 19th place for all time wins as a manager. Next up for Lou is anoth-
er hall of famer Clark Griffith who has 1,491 .wins. As of Wednesday, Lou
had 1,488 wins.

games.. In his last 10 games heading into Wednesday, Huff was batting .385
with four home runs and 13 RBI.
