Young realtor finds early success

Chris Eastman stands next to his 2005 Cadillac Escalade that he bought at the
end of last year. Eastman works for the nation wide real estate company
RE/MAX. He is in the top one percent.of realtors in the county...at the young
age of 24.

Good things usually come to those who wait. For 24-year-old Chris
Eastman, however, the wait was short and those things are starting to pile
up. Eastman is in the real-estate business, working for a nation wide com-
pany known as RE/MAX. Since he's been in real-estate, property values
have been increasing at a 15-30 percent rate each year making realty a prime
job at the moment.
Eastman's office in St. Pete Beach is the number one RE/MAX office in
Pinellas County in terms of selling volume. Last year the company sold
$171 million worth of realty. A good portion of the company's success can
be attributed to Eastman's hard work and steady climb to the top of this
growing business.
"It is really hard to get into real-estate because it is so competitive," said
Eastman. "I have had to work hard to get where I am. A lot of realtors will
only work two or three hours a day. A lot of times I'm in here from when
the doors open until we close."
The hard work has certainly paid off for the young St. Petersburg native.
Last year he was among the top one percent among all realtors that do busi-
ness in Pinellas County. That is an amazing feat considering only ten per-

City gets new Dali, park

The Dali officials hope to move the museum from its current 2,800-square-
foot building located at 1000 Third St. S. into.the 50,000-square- foot building

Salvador Dali Museum will get
money from the state to move onto
bigger and better things. In return,
the city will give the state a new 7.3-
acre waterfront park. St. Petersburg
Mayor Rick Baker and Gov. Jeb
Bush worked out a compromise that
will guarantee state money for the
new Dali Museum.
Bush agreed to drop plans to
veto $4-million designed for the
new museum. Baker promised that
the city would spend $2-million on a
new waterfront park. The compro-
Smise comes days after the Governor
and Secretary of State raised con-
cern regarding the funding from
Conservation and Recreational
Land. The CRL's purpose to con-
serve urban space for greenways
recreation raised questions regard-
ing its relevance to building a muse-
um.
Mayor Baker and City Council
Rick Kriseman called a meeting of
City Council on Monday, March 23
to reconfirm the city's intent to build
the new downtown waterfront park.
The Florida .Legislature
approved a $4 million dollar budget
for the construction of a new Dali
Museum. The bill is subject to
matching funds being raised in the
community. The museum is seeking
$4-mililon from the state this year
and next. Private sources and selling
the current building to USF St.
Petersburg would raise an additional
$12-million. The total cost of the
museum is expected to run up to
$25-million.
The $4-million in state money
would come from the Conservation

and Recreation Lands fund which
was designed in part "to conserve
urban open spaces, suitable for
greenways or outdoor recreation,"
Baker said in memo written to Jeb
Bush on May 18. Mayor also said
that should the Dali Museum suc-
cessfully relocate, it is city's inten-
tion to redevelop a 7.3 acre asphalt
parking lot into an open waterfront
recreational park. The value of that
land has been estimated at $16 mil-
lion and the cost of park and access
road improvements at $2 million.
"The combination of the state's
financial assistance to the Dali
Museum and the city's development
of a new waterfront recreational
park will meet the goal of providing
a safe and secure facility to house
the world's largest privately owned
collection of Dali artworks and will
also create an urban green space
recreational park," Mayor Baker
said in his memo to Governor Bush.
Last year, Dali officials said
that they wanted to move the Dali
Museum to a 50,000-square-foot
building on the site of the former
Times Arena at Bayfront Center
across the Mahaffey Theater. The
three-story building would grant
more space for exhibits and protect
the museum from high winds of hur-
ricanes. The 7.3-acre park would be
developed on what is now an asphalt
parking lot.
The Dali Museum opened in
March 1982 after a Cleveland cou-
ple Reynolds and Elenaor Morse
irrevocably loaned their Dali hold-
ings to the city of St. Petersburg.

cent of therealtors do 90 percent of the business in the county.
He was in the top ten among his fellow realtors last year out of about
40, and the most successful at his age.
It hasn't always been easy for Eastman, however, despite his early
achievements. He graduated from Northeast High School in 1999. He was
an offensive lineman for his football team and actually protected Devil Ray
pitcher Doug Waechter who played quarterback. Later on Eastman and his
partner helped Waechter buy his house, once he reached the big leagues.
After high school Eastman went on to college where he eventually
dropped out and began realty with his mom's company in 2002.
"At first things were going alright because I had a partner to work with,"
said Eastman. "After my mom's company started to fail, we left for
RE/MAX."
A big risk considering the fees RE/MAX charges for working under
their name. It is a hit or miss kind of company. Eastman and his business
partner were working their way up the company when his partner decided to
leave for California.
."After Joe (partner) left, things started getting really bad," he said. "At
one point I had only one closing in six months. I decided to get focused and
I wasn't going to let myself fail."
The results have been astounding. Last year he listed or sold over 20
properties reaching $5.6 million. His goal for this year is $8 million and he's
well on his way. He recently found out that mark will be reached in a cou-
ple of months.
"I don't really like talking too much about the money part too much, but
I have to brag a little," joked Eastman. "My first goal was accomplished at
the end of last year when I bought my brand new Cadillac Escalade."
Perhaps this is the reason he has had so much success. He refuses to
prop himself up, but at the same time carries the confidence of a young
entrepreneur.
"The reason he is successful is that he stays so humble," said his long
time friend Zayne Taber. "He is a very likeable guy. He is funny and good
with people and he works hard at what he does."
Some of his career goals for the future include getting into more com-
mercial realty along with buying and investing in his own properties.
Eastman plans on eventually raising a family with his wife Laura. In
the meantime, he spends a lot of time working with his church group, along
with various charities and just being the big kid that he actually is.
After all, he is one of St. Petersburg's young and most successful real-
tors at 24. You won't hear him brag or gloat about that success, however.
That is left up to the people that know him best...along with his Escalade.

contact Chris Eastman at 727-458-2892.

Fourth Street

bank street

There's Wachovia and Mer-
cantile, First Community Bank and
Cornerstone. SouthTrust and Bank
of America. There's another
Wachovia. There's AmSouth, Sig-
nature and SunTrust. Chartway
credit union, First State and United
Bank.
All located on the Fourth
Street North, these banks transform
Fourth Street into the Banker's
Row.
"There's a lot of activity on the
Fourth Street," said Tracey John-
son, manager at Wachovia North-
east Financial Center located on the
Fourth Street at 96th Avenue. "Cus-
tomers like easy access, where they
can just come in and out of the
bank," she said.
Wachovia bank at 96th Avenue
has been there since late 80s. John-
son says that the Fourth Street is
good for both the bank and cus-
tomers. It gives customers an easy
access. And it gives bank a lot of
business clientele. "There's a lot of
people on Fourth," Johnson said.
"It is a big area for business."
"Fourth Street has a lot of
opportunity," Johnson said.
"There's a lot of businesses on the
Fourth." And businesses, not just
banks, are growing and expanding
on the Fourth Street. New condo-.
miniums and restaurants are
blooming on the Fourth Street.
Wachovia's second bank is located
also on Fourth Street at 38th
Avenue. The third building is in
works and set to be open in June
when it consolidates SunTrust. Its
location Fourth Street at Central
Avenue.
Bank of St. Petersburg on Fifth
Avenue opened its doors to the
public last month and joined& the
banker's row.
"We are happy to be here,"
said Jill Shamory, head teller at
Bank of St. Petersburg. "We are
very pleased to be on the Fourth

Located on the Fourth Street at

one of two dozen banks on Fourth
Street, also known as "Banker's
Row." Wachovia has two banks on
Fourth Street and a third one is set
to open in June.
Street. It's a very busy area."
Another Cornerstone branch is
building right across from Sunken
Gardens. Colonial Bank just
opened its doors to public at 27th
Avenue.
And more banks are to come.
Freedom Bank of America is yet-
to-open bank that plans to build
and operate a 9,000-square-foot
headquarters office atl2th Avenue
by November.
Even though banks tend to
congregate at the same intersec-
tions as fast food joints and gas sta-
tions-both frequent fixtures on
Fourth Street-it's good for business
and customers.
They create more competition
among each other, which provides
customers with better choices.
Johnson says that Wachovia stress-
es customer service in its banks.
Johnson said that their bank is
more about customer service and
convenience. "Our customers
enjoy our branch on Fourth Street."
She said that she doesn't see
any disadvantages with sharing the
banker's row with over two dozen
other banks.
It's all about convenience on
the Fourth Street, Johnson said.

Summer

school

must for

college

students

By Scott Afasano
Staff Writer

College students around the
state are supposed to be enjoying
their summer break, going home to
visit their families, or working to
pay their high tuition for the fall
and spring semesters. Instead, uni-
versities around the state have been
forcing students to take nine credit
hours over their college career in
order to graduate.
Not much has been written
about the nine credit hours
required to graduate from the pub-
lic universities in the state. The
law was made in 1976 when the
Florida universities were strug-
gling to keep the bills paid and
doors open for the summer.
"This is not just a USE
requirement, this' is a state require-
ment," said USF St. Petersburg
academic advisor Beatrice Smith.
"It started out to get students here
in the summer for the state univer-
sities to be able to pay teachers arid
utilities."
At one time it may have been
a big deal for students, but with the
growing emergence of the Internet
and TV courses, summer session
for students is not a big deal.
"I haven't had too many prob-
lems with students who complain
or can't do the summerhours," said
Smith. "We repeatedly remind stu-
dents of their requirements. The
ones who complain are the ones
who put it off to the last second
instead of spreading them out over
their college career."
Students who transfer in from
Junior College or come in from
high school with certain college
credits are exempt from having to
fill the summer requirement.
"Students from Junior College
have already had to take two years
of classes," said Smith. "I don't
think it would be fair to have them
finish their final two years having
to take summer classes in a shorter
amount of time."
According to University cata-
logs, the University may waive the
application of this rule in cases of
unusual hardship. A student who
wishes to have the rule waived
must complete a "Request for
Waiver of Mandatory Summer
Enrollment Form" available in the
Office of the Registrar. These
exceptions are rarely accepted and
that the state is still pretty strict
about making students take the
classes.
"I think the state could get rid
of. the law now," said Smith. "I
don't think, it's something they've
really considered looking to
change because it isn't really
brought up as an issue."
Florida is the only state that
enforces a summer requirement for
college students.
"It could be hard for some stu-
dents who have to work over the
summer," said USF St. Petersburg
senior Will Green. "But with the
Internet courses it makes it a little
easier for kids that have to travel
home and can still complete theii
requirement."
For now students will just
have to live with the forgotten law.
Until something drastic happens
such as the block tuition bill pro-
posed by Govenor Jeb Bush last
year which said that students had
to take a minimum of 15 credit
hours per semester or be penalized
for going over, the summer hours
will probably be left as a require-
ment.

Pinellas 1 of 11 heart ready
counties in Florida
The American Heart Association recognized
Pinellas County with a Heart Ready Award hon-
oring the county's efforts to save the lives of sud-
den cardiac arrest victims. Pinellas County
Commissioner Susan Latvala accepted the award
at a recent BOCC meeting.
The American Heart Association presents
Heart Ready Awards to counties, cities and com-
munity partners who are leading the way to save
lives through Automated External Defibrillator
(AED) programs. An AED is a small, portable
device that can send an electric shock to the heart
and restore a patient's heart rhythm to normal lev-
els before emergency crews arrive on the scene.
It's a crucial part of the "Chain of Survival,"
which is a four step process designed to save vic-
tims oi sudden cardiac arrest. Those steps include
calling 9-1-1, performing cardiopulmonary resus-
citation (CPR), administering early defibrillation
with and AED and getting victims early advance
care.
An American Heart Association task force
developed criteria each county must meet to
obtain the designation of "Heart Ready." Coun-
ties must provide evidence that they have:
Enhanced 911 capabilities.
An AED registration and tracking system,
emergency medical dispatch (911 dispatchers
equipped to provide instructions such has how
to give CPR or use an AED over the phone/
CPR and AED training for employees.
A written plan to place additional AEDs
throughout the county.
All licensed medical first responders
equipped with defibrillation capabilities.
Equipped law enforcement facilities and/or
vehicles with AEDs.
Established a method to collect and analyze
the survival rate for cardiac arrest victims within
the county.
Pinellas is among 11 counties in Florida,
including Hillsborough, to receive the "Heart
Ready" designation. The American Heart Associ-
ation encourages counties, cities and communi-
ties across the state to become Heart Ready.
The American Heart Association estimates
that each day, more than 95 percent of Americans
who suffer cardiac arrest die before reaching the
hospital. That equates to nearly 930 deaths a day,
or 340,000 annually. It's estimated that 45,000 to
50,000 lives could be saved every year if AEDs
were more widely available in the community.
For every minute that passes during sudden car-
diac arrest, a victim's chance of survival decreas-
es by, 10 percent. That's why in Florida the Amer-
ican Heart Association is working with counties,
cities and businesses to ensure they are ready for
cardiacc emergencies
For more information about AEDs or CPR,

Hurricane tips: Protect your
business and home from the
worst
With the 2005 hurricane season starting June
1 and running through the end of November,
employers are encouraged to take steps before a
hurricane strikes to protect their business and
employees. Some tips for businesses include:
Prevent salt-water damage by storing elec-
tronic devices in a high dry place.
Backup computers and take one computer
off-site to ensure files will not be damaged.
Protect the side of the building that will be
hit by the strong side winds.
Cover all valuables and store all documents.,
Check to see what your flood insurance

covers.
Purchase materials such as sandbags, ply-
wood, plastic sheeting, garbage bags and lumber.
Move furnishings to safe ground, fill
propane tanks to keep them from floating away,
and tie down tanks and grease immovable
machinery.
Do not handle live electrical equipment in
wet areas and all electrical equipment should be
dried and checked before returning to service.
Report broken electrical equipment and
utility lines to appropriate authorities.
Video tape the building or home before and
after the hurricane to report damages.
Make temporary repairs to prevent looting
or any further damage. For example, board up
holes in walls and broken windows.
A local pawn shop in Orange County was a
near victim of looting during last hurricane sea-
son. Thanks to an audio verified security system,
a security company dispatcher heard the looters
break-in to the shop. The sheriffs office captured
the looters, who were looking for guns. The pawn
shop then took the appropriate preventative mea-
sures by storing guns in a safe place off-site.

yourself during hurricane season, visit www.hur-
ricanesafety.org.

Florida folk festival celebrates
children's arts and music
The Florida Folk Festival, a three-day cele-
bration of Florida's cultural roots, features a new
area for children up to age 14. The Children's
Area is free and will be located near the Stephen
Foster Museum in the center of the festival
grounds. Kids can design their own hat, build a
musical instrument or stage their own perfor-
mances.
Throughout: the Memorial Day weekend,
more than 400 performances will showcase the
Sunshine State's traditions of storytelling, dance,
music and food. The event offers workshops, jam
sessions and interactive performances for kids
from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily. Classes in story-
telling, crafts, dance and song allow children to
participate and create their own arts. The award-
winning songs and stories of "Mrs. Kate" will be
featured daily. A jam session with all songs in the
key of D brings kids together to share their
favorite tunes. Every afternoon the day's pro-
grams will end with a child-friendly band pre-
senting a sing-a-long performance accompanied
by homespun instruments.
The Florida Folk Festival is one of the
nation's oldest folk festivals, held for the past 53
years at Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State
Park in north central Florida. Unique among the-
state's many festivals, the Festival combines
entertaining performances with free workshops,
educational activities and exhibits. Visitors can
make a pine needle basket, learn to play the
Dominican tambora drum or participate in the
state fiddling contest on Saturday. Musical con-
certs range from bluegrass, bagpipes, yodeling
and gospel to klezmer, Laotian hymns and a 30-
piece bamboo orchestra. Dancers from Bosnia
and Africa will perform, or visitors can kick up
their heels at Cajun and contra dances.
Stephen Foster State Park is located near the
intersections of 1-10 and 1-75 in north central
Florida. The Folk Festival is administered under

The word 'blog' is becoming a household term, but tell that to the spell
checker on my computer. So what exactly is this word and where did it come
from? Everywhere on the Internet, there are blogs, which allow you to read
independent writers' works on different subjects. In August 1999, Evan
Williams in San Francisco figured out how to update his website by just typ-
ing text into a text box. Without going through the process of an HTML for-
matting or uploading with an FTP browser: The word blog came from the
word web log, because they are like a running diary.
The only thing you really need to be able to blog is a website and corre-
sponding blogging software. Blogs are sprouting up everywhere. There are
blogdirectories that have links to different people's web pages based on top-
ics. Even news media outlets such as Fox and CNN have links to blogs on
their websites.
Having your own website is also becoming irrelevant to blog. Different
sites will host your blog at a certain price, or sometimes even free. The more
popular the logging site the more likely your blog will be read.
/ Blogging is a good tool to help people learn to write. For the longest
time editors have taken away certain opinions and pushed stories and views
that appease advertisers and other financial supporters. .Blogs can let people
express themselves without having to worry about what people think and
whether or not their ideas will be published.
The phenomenon has turned into a sort of hippie revolution on the Inter-
net. A take over of the common people, as they try and liberate themselves
through their different forms of writing.-
Another benefit of blogging is getting your name out there. People can
actually make money if enough people read their blogs and gain the attention
of advertisers. It can also perhaps catch the eye of a newspaper or other
media outlets, which can help, propel somebody's career.
The possibilities for blogs are endless. Publishing books on the Internet
may become more common as people who try to get publishers to buy their
work, may be able to blog their way into the mainstreamed bullheaded indus-
try. '
It is the new fad going around the Internet. The blogging craze is just
the beginning to what could be another c ber space wonder. People's
thoughts are being spread faster than one can imagine.

Christin Hardman Creignou
November 27, 1951 May 24, 2005

Christin was born Christine Ann Hardman on November 27, 1951, at
Blanchard Valley Hospital in Findlay, Ohio.
She attended St. Michaels School (1-9) and then Findlay High School.
Graduating at 17, she completed her freshman year of college at Ohio
a wDominican College before transferring to Ohio State. She triple-majored
j in Social Sciences, Behavioral Sciences and Video Production, and grad-
uated in June 1973 at the age of 21.
Three days after graduation, she left Ohio for Hollywood, determined
to work in television. She landed ajob as a production assistant and office
manager doing "ABC After School Specials", commercials and short sub-
jects. She advanced to full video production editor responsibilities. From
1974-1981, she was Chief Video Editor forthe Barney Miller Show, Fish,
and other prime time ABC TV productions.
In 1981, Christin took a week-long training seminar for CMX video
editing equipment. CMX believed Christin had a strong grasp of their equipment and hired her on the spot.
Within two weeks, she quit her Hollywood job and moved to Palo Alto, California, where she spent eight years
conducting global equipment training and product development for CMX. Her travel schedule was grueling
as she traveled constantly throughout Europe, Japan, Puerto.Rico, Canada, and virtually the entire United
States.
On client visits in France in 1982, Christin met Jean-Paul Creignou. They dated trans-continentally every
month, and talked often on long distance phone calls. They were married in Palo Alto, California, on June 25,
1983.
In 1988, Christin developed breast cancer. After treatment, she was eventually cleared of the disease. She
started her own business, Ciela, Inc., which allowed her to stop her travel schedule and concentrate on her
health. Her business focused on productization taking product concepts through full development and mar-
keting for Sony, Lucas Films and other Silicon Valley technology companies.
,After discovering that he had Retinitis Pigmentosa, Jean-Paul was forced to quit his job as a Video Engi-
neer with Sony in 1997. Christin and J.P. decided to relocate to a place where J.P. could actively pursue his
love of the water in blind and handicapped sailing activities. They couple moved to St Petersburg in the spring
of 2001.
Christin supported Jean-Paul's sailing, and in September 2004 she accompanied J.P. to the Paralympics in
Athens where she watched him receive the Bronze Medal for the US 3-person sailing team. She then suc-
ceeded in reaching the top of the Acropolis, a life-long dream.
When Christin developed ovarian cancer in late 2001, she continued to lead a busy life in spite of her
chemo and radiation treatments. She was active in the St. Petersburg Junior League and served on their Board,
and served on the Board of the Great Explorations Children's Museum. She earned the United Way Volunteer
of the Year Award in 2004.
On May 17th, 2005, Christin received the Junior League of St Petersburg's Mailande Holland Barton
Award, She was too ill to attend in person, and J.P. accepted the award on her behalf. One week later, on
May 24th, Christin lost her battle with cancer.
She is survived by her husband Jean-Paul, and brothers Tom and John.

Gravity seized to exist in my world last week when I took a trip to
Tampa. And there were some astronauts on hand to prove it.
Sheikra, a new rollercoaster at Busch Gardens, opened up this past
weekend (May 21), giving riders a brief taste of what our men and women
of space feel every time they leave the planet. Astronauts Richard Searfoss
and Story Musgrave were one of the first to test out America's first dive
rollercoaster.
"It's like taking a spaceflight in a way," said Musgrave. "It covers so
much territory; it is a really sweet ride."
Sheikra takes you up 200 feet then suspends you over the drop for about
five seconds before falling at a 90 degree angle, becoming weightless for a
couple of seconds.
"It's a lot like instantaneously changing to weightlessness in space," said
Searfoss. The only thing I can really say is, 'wow."'
The ride is about three minutes long, covering 3,188 feet of track.
Much of that time, however, is spent climbing to the 200 foot mark. Once
at the top, look closely and on a clear day, you may be able to see the'Sky-
way bridge in St. Petersburg along with Tropicana field. The view is incred-
ible if you can stomach the eventual outcome.
Vice President of Design, Mark Rose, is looking forward to the upcom-
ing summer and the parks success from this uniquely designed coaster.
"The best part is, we get to thrill you," he said. "We are all rewarded by
your smiles, screams and applause. When you can see parts of downtown
St. Petersburg and Tropicana Field, you know it is a big deal."
Not only is the drop 200 feet, but riders will experience a top speed of
70mph with up to 4g's of force. That is the fastest coaster in the state.
Sheikra is named after a powerful and explosive African bird that dives,
twists and turns as it hunts for its prey. It is the only dive coaster in the world
that incorporates an Immelmann loop, (a simultaneous loop and roll) a sec-
ond 90 degree drop of 138-feet through an underground tunnel, topped off
by rooster tail water feature that adds to the coaster's allure.
S "We have a coaster with one of the largest inversions in the world," said
Brown. "It's unbelievably visual, graceful and smooth. It is truly an aero-
dynamic wonder."
Perhaps the best feature of this ride is the way riders are seated. Sheikra
is equipped with three rows containing eight seats each. The rows are in the
form of stadium seating, which makes the thrill-seekers feel like they are in
the front row, now matter what row they are in.
Busch Gardens has certainly raised the bar for thrill rides in the state of
Florida, as well as the country. The park now holds six roller coasters, mak-
ing the theme park arguably Florida's foremost adventure destination and top
choice for coaster enthusiasts.
