For the last five years, Family Service Centers, Inc.
has honored a Pinellas County family that epitomizes a
spirit of generosity. The Family of the Year award.was
established to acknowledge a family's Commitment to
one another as well as their community. This year, Fam-
ily Services honored the family of Calvin and Ruth Har-
ris with the award at Feather Sound Country Club on
Wednesday May 4.
:JIn 1965, Mr, Harris attended Gibbs Junior College
eventually earning a doctorate in education from Nova
University. He began teaching Social Studies at Semi-
nole High School in 1968, and has been involved with
students and children, both his own, and in Pinellas
County ever since.
Governor Lawton Chiles appointed Mr. Harris
County Commissioner in 1997, making him the first
African-American member of the board as well as the
only democrat serving in a countywide position. Mr.
Harris doesn't take all the credit for his success. The
award is not only an honor to him, but also for those that
have been supporting him through it all, particularly, his
family.
S"It's a real high honor to receive this award," said
Mr. Harris. "This is as much for them (my family) as it
is for me. So often they made the sacrifice to help me
reach my goals. It is very special and very humbling."

Airport gets a new connection

By Irena Milasinovic
Staff Writer
St. Petersburg-Clearwater Inter-
national Airport announced last
month new service to Newburgh,
New York and Columbus, Ohio that
will be provided by Pan Am Clipper
Connection.
Boston-Maine Airways, part of
the Pan Am Clipper Connection,
will operate jet service from the St.
Petersburg-Clearwater International
Airport to Rickenbaker International
Airport in Columbus, Ohio and
Stewart International Airport in
Newburgh, New York with connect-
ing service to Portsmouth, New
Hamshire.
The announcement of Pan Am
Clipper Connection comes months
after:the airport lost 80 percent of its
passenger traffic when two biggest
carriers, Southeast Airlines and ATA
Airlines, left in the last few months.
There is an ongoing effort to
expand the airport, especially, since
we have lost some service, said
Michele Routh, community rela-
tions director.
Southeast Airlines closed down
Nov.30. ATA Airlines, the airport's
dominant airline, pulled its flights
due to the bankruptcy filed in Octo-
ber 2004. ATA represented 50 per-
cent of St. Petersburg-Clearwater
International Airport's passenger
traffic in 2004. The airport estimated
a loss of 150,000 passengers in 2005
from the termination of ATA ser-
vices. The impact for fiscal year
2005 budget was projected to be
$400,000 in lost revenues.
"Pan Am is bringing back two

cities we have lost back in Decem-
ber," said Routh. No 2. Southeast
Airlines carried connections to both
Newburgh, New York and Colum-
bus, Ohio.
Beginning June 30, the Pan Am
Clipper Connection will make
roundtrip flights to the Stewart Inter-
national Airport on Saturdays and
Sunday, and four times a week
flights to Rickenbacker International
Airport on Thursday, Friday, Satur-
day and Sunday.
One-way fares range from $73
to $214 to Columbus and $79 to
$179 to Newburgh. The carrier flies
Boeing 727 jets that feature coach
and Clipper Plus, first-class seats.
Pan. Am is a brand' hamee for
flights operated by Boston-Maine
Airways. Pan American Airways
bought the name from a company
that acquired it from the original Pan
Am in bankruptcy court. Pan Amer-
ican Airways came to St:- Peters-
burg-Clearwater Intertational in
December 2001 but stayed ess than
a year.
It is projected that the USA
3000 Airlines will carry about
300,000 passengers per year while
two Canadian carriers, Air Transat
and Canjet, are expected to serve
about 100,000 passengers per year.
Third Canadian carrier, Jetsgo Air-
lines, cancelled all its arriving and
departing flights on Friday, March.
11.
Routh said that the Pam Am
Airways plans to expand to the Latin
American market in the future from
St. Petersburg-Clearwater Interna-
tional Airport.

ilies and communities as safe places for people to live
and grow. They believe that supporting healthy families
enables them to create strong and responsive communi-
ties. They give out the award to a family that exempli-
fies these characteristics in the community as well as
their family.
"We have a committee and a board of directors that
is responsible for nominating families that display our
values," said Mary Jo Monahan, president and CEO of
Family Service Centers Inc.. "Every year we choose a
safe, strong, stable and nurturing family. We thought of
these thi igs and Calvin and Ruth came to mind-"
Recently, the Harris family founded the Student
Development Center in the Greenwood area of Clearwa-
ter. This is an after-school tutoring and mentoring pro-
gram serving at-risk students. At any given, they and the
volunteers work ith about fifty youth. Mr. Harris has
also served as a Director of Board member for over 20
organizations and/or public service entities. Many fami-
lies have the ability to help out. the community, but what
separates a family such as the Harris' is they take those
community values and instill them in their homes.
"Not only has Mr. Harris helped our community, he
has passed along his community leadership to his fami-
ly," said Monahan.
Over two hundred guests honored the Harris family
at their reception, including several mayors. Past recip-
ients of the Family of the Year award include Gus and
Frances Stavros, Dan and Roz Doyle, Ginny and Dennis
Sexton, and Bob and Carolyn Ulrich.

Guide to Mother's Day

By Irena Milasinovic
Staff Writer
Mother's Day is on Sunday, May 8. Those of you who still don't have
plans for your mothers, wives and loved ones aren't out of luck. It turns out
many restaurants don't take reservations or call ahead.
So if you are planning a nice Mother's Day brunch, a day in a spa or
flowers for your mothers, here are some of the available options in Pinellas
County.
Most of the restaurants in Pinellas County don't have any Mother's Day
specials. However, most of them will open their doors at 11 a.m. instead of
their regular Sunday hours. Carabas Italian Grill located on 1951 Fourth St
N. will open at la.m on Sunday. The restaurant doesn't accept reservations
or call ahead. It will seat on first come first serve basis. There will be no
Mother's Day specials.
Dan Marino's Fine Food and Spirits located on 121 Second Ave N has
a Hall of Fame Menu for Moms on
Mother's Day. The menu, which will
last till next week, contains new
appetizer Tuscan Calamari, and three
different entire choices. Mothers
will receive a gift from Tranquility
Day Spa when they purchase an
entr6e from the Hall of Fame Menu
on Mother's Day. The gifts range
from massages to nail manicures. .
There are about 30 to 40 gifts avail- TO
able. Patrons can not call ahead, and
reservations are only allowed for i a
party of 8 or more.
Outback Restaurant will open its
door at 11 a.m. on Sunday for Moth-
er's Day. There is no reservation
available but patrons can call ahead
about an hour prior to the arrival. The
Outback Steakhouse restaurants are
located in St. Petersburg on 1900
Fourth St N, and 4088 Park St. N.
Janet Mittendorf Skin Care, located at 8850 Fourth St N in St. Peters-
burg, offers spa packages and specials just in time for Mother's Day. Spe-
cials, called MINI DAY SPA, range from $76 to $106.00. For $76.00,
choose any 2 full hour services: deep cleansing facial, Forget Your Stress
pedicure, One Hour Relaxing Massage, Baby soft skin Body Buff, Cellulite
reducing Body Wrap, Serious Back Cleansing, Styled Haircut, or Custom
Hair Color. All services in package must be performed in the same day. The
same services but for 3 full hours are $106.00. The skin care salon is open
from 10 to-p.m. on Sunday. and Fridays and Saturdays 9am 5pm.-
Sunken Gardens offers free admission to all mothers who are accompa-
nied.by a paid child of any age during the Tropical Mother's Day. The child
pays $4 and the offer lasts from 12p.m. till 4:30p.m. No special events are
offered during that time. It is open to the public. Florida Aquarium,,Lowry
Park Zoo and Great Explorations offer free admissions to moms % ith anoth-
er paid admission. Great Explorations allow kids to make a free Mother's
Day gift on Sunday. Kids pay $7. The Great Explorations is located on 1925
Fourth St and is open 12-4:30p.m. on Mother's Day.
Thinking of getting roses for Mother's Day? Oli ia's Flowers. a flower
shop located on 118 Fifth Ave N, sells one dozen roses for $65 for Mother's
Day. A one rose will cost $4. It is a slight increase in price from the regular
season where one dozen roses go for $60 and one stem rose for'$3. Olivia
Flowers says that they will have enough flowers to accommodate everyone.
The shop is closed on Sunday. The FTD.com, an online flower siop, offers
one dozen white stemmed roses for $29.99. The next day delivery by FedEx
or UPS is still available on Friday and Saturday for orders placed by 1p.m.
Eastern Time to the continental United States. A $1,0.99 service charge will
be added to this arrangement.

Danner announces council candidacy

By Brent Western
Special to Pinellas News
One of Kenwood's own is running for city office.
Jeff Danner, a resident of historical Kenwood in St.
Petersburg announced his candidacy for City Council in
district eight on Monday, May 2.
The announcement came at his campaign headquar-
ters on Central Avenue in downtown St. Petersburg.
John "Jay" Lasita is vacating the office after two four-
year terms. Lasita was in attendance to support Danner's
candidacy. Danner's cam-
paign will be centered on
the community, its develop-
ment, safety, education and
Revitalization.
As a resident since the
late 70's, Danner has not
only seen the growing
changes in this area; he has
helped lead them. Danner is
the owner of Florida Proper-
ty Consultants as well as the
Kenwood Representative
DANNER for the Council of Neighbor-
hood Associations.
Danner has spearheaded several key community
issues, including Urban Village One in 1996, which
changed zoning laws to allow for residential areas above
business properties, and the 34th Street Business Asso-
ciation.
He and his wife Robyn have seen Kenwood evolve
from a primarily rental community, to one that now
boasts a homeowner rate of 80 percent.
Danner intends to keep this new residential feeling
a fixture in his community. He envisions a united com-
munity; a throwback to earlier times, with an old fash-
ioned feeling of friendship, involvement and harmony.
The starting point of the campaign, according to
Danner, was to address changes in his neighborhood,
which he hopes will make carry over towards the entire

city of St. Petersburg.
"We started with Kenwood and it keeps spreading.
The next logical step was taking these changes into the
city council." Danner wants to start by revitalizing the
city with a "Main Street" feel that he hopes to help lead.
"I hope to guide the city through development and
follow Vision 2020 which was laid out a few years ago.
The key is to know how to see. it all the way-through,
without over or under-developing the city."
Even though Danner has been a part of some sub-
stantial growths in the city, including being the chairman
of St. Petersburg's Planning Committee, which .helps
council members decide which way to vote on certain
projects, he never imagined he would run for city office.
"It just happened," he said. I wouldn't say running
for office has been an aspiration of mine, but at the same
time, it wasn't a spur of the moment decision. It was a
natural progression from helping our neighborhoods, to
being a part of Grand Central and Historic Kenwood, to
having the chance to do these things from a city office."
Bob Jeffrey, an assistant director of Developmental
Services in St. Petersburg, has known Danner for over a
decade and hopes to see the efforts continue, with Dan-
ner leading the way from City Council.
"What sets Jeff apart is his knowledge of the com-
munity, the ability to see it all the way through, from res-
ident to city council" said Jeffrey.
At this time, Jeff Danner runs unopposed. The dead-
line to announce candidacy is July 31, 2005. His cam-
paign believes by entering the race early, they will be
able to keep voters well informed of the importance of
community, and allow Danner's vision to revitalize the
community, speak for itself.
Now that he has announced his candidacy, his next
step is to participate in a few meet and greets, as well as
begin raising funds. Once it gets closer to election, he
plans on attending the Chamber Meetings and various
neighborhood meetings to show his dedication to seeing
his vision through the entire process. Campaign head-
quarters for Jeff Danner is located at 2412 Central
Avenue in St. Petersburg. You can visit his campaign
efforts at www.jeffdanner.com.

Nation's leaders take a stand for
wildlife
In a strong, bipartisan show of support for
America's wildlife, 128 members of the U.S.
House of Representatives and 55 senators have
signed letters urging a substantial increase in
funding for wildlife conservation. The letters,
addressed to the chairman and ranking members
of the Interior Appropriations Committee in both
the House and Senate, support a funding level of
$85 million for the State Wildlife Grants Program
in fiscal year 2006.
"State Wildlife Grants is the nation's core
program for preventing wildlife from becoming
endangered in every state. I'm glad to see so
many of my colleagues pull together to support a
program that will enhance wildlife conservation,"
said Sen. John Warner (R-VA). "This support
shows the growing priority our nation is placing
on conserving wildlife for future generations to
appreciate."
Last year, the State Wildlife Grants Program
secured just under $70 million. President George
Bush's FY2005 budget proposed increasing the
program to $74 million. This request by members
of Congress for $85 million recognizes an even
greater need.
"This letter clearly shows that the fight for
additional funding for State Wildlife Grants is a
bipartisan issue," said Rep. Mike Thompson (D-
CA). "We should make every attempt to fully
fund sound conservation efforts to prevent envi-
ronmental problems and further loss of important
fish and wildlife habitat."
Created by Congress in 2001 to begin early
strategic investments in wildlife and habitat con-
servation, the State Wildlife Grants Program
helps states protect declining fish and wildlife
habitat. The program saves both wildlife and tax-
payer dollars and reduces costs and conflicts over
endangered species listings. A matching require-
ment leverages federal funding from state and pri-
vate sources, often doubling the impact of every
dollar of federal funding.
"In a tight budget year, this bipartisan group
of leaders is standing up for a program that really
works," said John Baughman, executive vice
president of the International Association of Fish
and Wildlife Agencies. "These legislative leaders
have demonstrated that they are true champions
for America's fish and wildlife."
The campaign for the letters was led by a
bipartisan group of congressional leaders from
across the nation. In Florida, Sen. Bill Nelson (D-
Melbourne), Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Miami),
Rep. Adam Putnam (R-Bartow), and Rep. Robert
Wexler (D-Boca Raton) have joined in the efforts.
"We are extremely grateful to our Congres-
sional leaders who have joined together in this
strong show of support for wildlife conservation"
said Vicki Tschinkel, The Nature Conservancy's
Florida state director. "The increased funding will
allow the program to move forward more ambi-
tiously in our efforts to address conservation for
Florida's fish and wildlife."
"The continued broad-based support for the
State Wildlife Grants Program both within Flori-
da and throughout the country shows how impor-
tant and significant this ground-breaking effort to
keep common species common has become," said
Dr. Thomas Eason, leader of Species Conserva-
tion Planning, Division of Habitat and Species
Conservation, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conser-
vation Commission.
Lifestyle Family Fitness launches
BodyCombat class
A Cardio Workout that Combines Karate, Tai
Chi, Kickboxing and Tae Kwon Do
Lifestyle Family Fitness launched a new
exercise class, BodyCombat, the ultimate mar-

tial arts workout. BodyCombat combines moves
and stances from a range of self-defense disci-
plines, including Karate, Tai Chi, kickboxing and
Tae Kwon Do, into cardio-pumping, muscle-
defining workouts. BodyCombat's cardio-com-
bative workout can bur over 500 calories per
class, while improving participants' strength,
speed, flexibility, coordination and balance.
Through a motivating routine, BodyCombat
shapes and tones through a series of punches,
jabs, elbows, uppercuts, blocks, front kicks, back
kicks and side kicks. The workout intensity can
be self-regulated by participants by simply
increasing or decreasing the range and accelera-
tion of movements. Instructors are given strict
guidelines for the maximum kicking heights and
striking extensions considered safe. By adjusting
intensity to their physical ability, participants will
achieve a safe maximum workout effect. The
BodyCombat program is owned and licensed by
Body Training Systems (BTS), an Atlanta-based
provider of group fitness programs. (www.body-
trainingsystems.com)
"With the increasing popularity of martial-
arts based workouts, BodyCombat's innovative
program combines great music with high-energy
self-defense movements that target all the major
muscle groups of the body," said Melissa Class,
Director of Group Fitness for Lifestyle Family
Fitness. "This program is popular because of its
ability to fight fat and burn calories. In addition,
women particularly like the program because of
the sense of empowerment it offers."
The BTS programming is complimentary to
members as part of their membership. Class times
may vary among Lifestyle Family Fitness clubs
and BodyCombat will not be available in
Lifestyle's Jacksonville location. Please call 1-
800-LIFESTEP or visit www.lff.com for the
group fitness schedule at the club nearest you.

Over 1,100 gathered to secure
commitments on VPK education
and transportation for the elderly
and sick
On Thursday, April 28, in an unprecedented
gathering of over 1,100 members of local faith
communities, FAST leaders secured commit-
ments from Janet Chapman, Director of the Early
Learning Coalition, to ensure that low income
children have access to a full day, high quality
voluntary pre-K program and from Roger
Sweeney, Director of PSTA, to change an unsafe
bus stop and put shelters in new places. FAST,
Faith and Action for Strength Together, is a new
interfaith community organization comprised of
25 diverse congregations representing over
30,000 people of various economic, social, and
racial backgrounds from throughout Pinellas
County, FL. The mission of FAST is to bring
together diverse congregations in order to address
the root causes of poverty and injustice in Pinel-
las County, FL.
Janet Chapman committed to ensuring that
there are wrap around funds for all pre-K students
whose parents are at less than 150% of the pover-
ty level, hiring a professional outreach coordina-
tor to focus on reaching out to low-income fami-
lies, make funding available to assist certified
per-K providers serving low-income children to
buy curricula which are aligned with current
research as determined by the Florida Center for
Reading Research, and conduct pre and post test-
ing with children from low-itcome working fam-
ilies and children who are at risk of school failure.
"We have to invest in our young children to get
them on the right educational track. I say pay
now, or pay more later," said Rev. Willie McClen-
don, pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church in Largo.
Mr. Sweeney committed to figuring out a
way to allow people to go south on McMullen
Booth road from Mease Countryside Hospital
without having to. cross the street or pay an extra
fare. People who have.jui come. out of Mease
Countryside Hospital have to cross six Janes of
traffic on McMullen Booth Road, where an aver-
age of 70,000 cars per, day travel, to catch the bus
going south bound. "We need to make sure that
this issue is resolved before someone is needless-
ly killed crossing McMullen Booth Road," said
Father Joe Diaz, Rector of Holy Trinity Episcopal
Church.
Finally, FAST leaders announced a commit-
ment from Mr. Brain Smith, Director of the Pinel-
las County Planning Department, to ask. the
Metropolitan Planning Organization to come up
with a plan for a one stop assessment and referral
system for senior transportation. ."I called one
number and they told me to call another number
and then they told me to call yet another number.
I was frustrated discouraged and overwhelmed by
the end and I still didn't have a ride to the doctor,"
said Mrs. Dorothy Harris, a 75 year old widow
and member of Bethel .Community Baptist
Church.

books, heard the radio play or seen the TV series, I can't imagine them being any worse

The movie starts out with the narrator (Stephen Fry) giving his take on the human
race. A thought provoking humorous commentary about how mankind is the third
smartest species on Earth, followed by an amusing singing and dancing number by the
second smartest species...the dolphins. (For those who are brave enough to sit through
the entire movie, the smartest species is revealed at the end of the movie). Needless to
say when the dolphins exit the stage, they bring the comedy and plot line with them.
British actor Martin Freeman plays Arthur Dent, an Englishman who has his house
blown up just minutes before his planet Earth is to explode. The movie uses Dent's house
as an analogy to the destruction of Earth. Both are being cleared to make way for an
expressway of some sorts.
Seconds before Earth is blown up, Dent's friend Ford Perfect (Mos Def), reveals to
Dent that he is an alien and also discloses the secret of Earth's inevitable demise. Both
than hitchhike a ride on one of the destroyers, beginning an adventure of humorless jokes
and undeveloping story lines. Dent is given a guide, the hitchhiker's guide, to help him

navigate through space and explain odd things that happen in the mysterious galaxy.
They eventually join up with Galactic President Zaphod Beeblebrox played by Sam
Rockwell (one of the few bright spots in the movie), Zaphod's girlfriend and Dent's love
interest from Earth, Trillian (Zooey Deschanel) and a depressed robot named Marvin
(voice of Alan Rickman).
All are on a planet-hopping quest to find out the answer to life, the universe and
everything in it. The only problem is, nobody knows the question.
The one thing that saves the eyes from drifting off completely into space, literally, is
the imagery and special effects, put together by Director Garth Jennings. Dent's journey'
into the construction place for the "new Earth" is colorful and mesmerizing. Jennings and
the effects specialists so a good job with the cameras and digital imagery, as the viewer
feels like they are in space landing on a various planets. The scene with the dolphins is
exuberant and vivid as well.
Other than that, it feels as though the movie is trying to cram a series of books into
an hour and fifty minutes worth of airtime. The plot never develops, the story lines are
always cut short and the jokes have no punch lines. There is tons of action, but it is mud-
dled and very jumpy. Figuring out who's who and where in the galaxy we are going next,
is extremely exhausting. It was like watching a really long preview, without having a fea-
ture presentation to look forward to.
For the die-hard fans of the play, books and TV series, the movie may be a little more
enjoyable. For the people, however, that haven't journeyed into the galaxy before, you
may want to leave your space suits and moon boots at home. Grade D+
