Rays Notes

ase

Jorge can do
2B Jorge Cantu (pictured above) had the hottest bat for the Rays' during
the first week of the season. He hit safely in the first seven games and
through Tuesday, Cantu was hitting .357. He also had six RBI and three
home runs, leaving him just two blasts shy of the club record for most home
runs by a Rays' second baseman in an entire season.

Joey bats right
Known for his blazing speed, Joey Gathright, the fill-in centerfielder
while Alex Sanchez serves his 10 game supsension for steroids, has been
displaying his skills at the plate as well. Through Tuesday, Gathright was
hitting .438.

Semi-sweet home
The Rays play 14 of their first 19 games and 24 of their first 35 games
at Tropicana Field. Through Tuesday, the Rays were 63-( at home since
July 3, 2003.

Strong, for starters
Through the first six games of the season, the starting pitchers for the
Rays held opponents to a .191 batting average, tying them with San Fran-
cisco for the lowest among all starting staffs in the majors.

Fast and the furious
If the Rays can continue to steal bases like they did during the first
week, they will surely aggravate many opposing managers this season.
Entering Tuesday's game, the Rays led the majors with 10 stolen bases
through the first six games.

Huff ties McGriff
OF Aubrey Huff hit his 99th career home run on Saturday off Oakland's
Barry Zito. The round-tripper tied him with Fred McGriff for most career
home runs by a Devil Ray.

Shining Ray of the week: Josh Phelps
Aside from the obvious picks in Cantu and Gathright, Phelps has pro-
vided his share of offense. Through Tuesday he was hitting .348 with 5 extra
base hits.

Slumping Ray of the week: Toby Hall
Through Tuesday Hall was hitting just .217 and had no hits with run-
.ners in scoring position.

Infectious disease:

another terrorist
By Scott Afasano
Columnist
The immediate threat to the United States, according to many people, is
terrorism. Since September 11, America has steadily been fighting the war
on terror in places like Afghanistan and Iraq. It has been three and a half
years since America's day of infamy, leaving some to wonder when the next
wave of attacks will hit our country. Will it come in the way of a plane, a
car bomb, a missile, or perhaps an infectious disease in the form of bioter-
rorism? Infectious diseases do not have to come in the form of terrorism,
however.
Viruses such as HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C have plagued our country
and world without the help of Al Qaeda or other Islamist groups. Diseases
in other countries and the threat of bioterrorism in our country can have both
direct and indirect impacts on our society. The question is whether or not our
country is headed in the right direction in terms of how we are protecting it.
.HIV/AIDS and Malaria are two diseases that have been a problem, par-
ticularly in places with low state capacity. Subsequent countries in Africa
such as Botswana have significantly high HIV/AIDS rates. One out of every
three people in Botswana has HIV or AIDS. Many people in Africa spend
more than half of their income on providing health care for family members
with the virus. In 2003 infectious diseases accounted for a quarter to a third
of the deaths worldwide. You may wonder what effect this has on the Unit-
ed States. It may not have an immediate or direct effect, but it does have an
indirect effect that could lead to future threats.
If the AIDS virus spreads far enough it could have economic impacts in
the market of America as well as social impacts. Sub-Saharan Africa has
become world's largest net exporter of fresh food and agro-based products.
They are also becoming global exporters of oil, fish, and clothing. With dis-
eases such as HIV and Malaria killing off populations of skilled workers, the
exports will go down putting a bigger burden on the rest of the world,
including the United States. The average life span for a person living in
Africa is 47. When people die that young it forces children to drop out of

More than two hundred local
business leaders gathered at the St.
Petersburg Yacht Club on Tuesday
for the inaugural Business Building
a Better Community luncheon. The
YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg
hosted the get-together in order cele-
brate the contributions made by
numerous corporations to various
community organizations and chari-
ties in the Tampa Bay area.
Associates from some of the
area's top businesses such as Bank
of America, Bayfront Medical Cen-
ter, Accordia/Wells Fargo and Allied
International Holdings attended the
event and had a chance to listen to
Thomas A. James, the chief execu-
tive officer of Raymond James
Financial, Inc., discuss his views on
developing a stronger workforce
through investment in the communi-
ty.
The Business Building a Better
Community initiative seeks to offer
possibilities to young people who
might otherwise fail to make a suc-
cessful transition to adulthood.
"Where the kids go is where the
community goes," said former
WFLA sports director and master of
ceremonies Dick Crippen.
With that in mind, James spoke
to the importance of corporate
involvement in community develop-
ment.
"It provides us a stronger work
pool of future employees," said
James. "It makes us a better place to
live, and recruit potential workers."
James added that companies
who participate in community pro-
grams benefit by helping others.
"If you work with your employ-
ees on a charity project, they get
excited, they get involved, and they
become part of your firm's family,"
said James.
It's that kind of value that James
told the audience is so important in
building a successful organization.
"Man is more than an economic
mean," James said. "The central
core of why we're a successful firm
is that we believe in values, we
preach values."
Organizations such as Habitat
for Humanity, SPCA of Central
Florida, American Stage, Eckerd.
College and Northeast High School
have been beneficiaries of those val-
ues.
The YMCA used the luncheon
to show its appreciation for the cor-

pnimo oy quarter o. hllaso
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Thomas James, of
Raymond James Financial, Inc. highlighted the importance of corporate
participation in community programs and service projects during his
speech on Tuesday.

porate contributions it has received
in recent years, financial and volun-
teer support that has allowed it to
relocate to a new headquarters on
35th Street SouthncareaL-Avenue.
"We have been very blessed
with tremendous leadership and vol-
unteers while I've been here," said
President Doug Linder.
St. Petersburg Mayor Rick
Baker said he has been amazed by
the power of corporate involvement
in the community and the positive
effect it can have.
S"I don't think any of us four or
five years ago ever thought that (the
YMCA) would go from that nice,
old building downtown to the beau-
tiful new building it's in now," said
Baker.
The mayor stressed that having
successful companies in the city is
an important factor in bettering 'the
area, because they can help provide
a setting for people to take an inter-
est in the community.
"We provide many social pro-
grams," said Baker. "I recognize the
best one you can provide is a good
job with a good wage."
James said the major motto for
his corporation when he joined the
company in 1966 had to do with

school to support their families. Different trades seize to get passed down
to younger generations because people die or become too sick to teach them.
Once skills die out, a state tends to become less educated and poor.
When a state becomes feeble it leaves themselves open to guerilla groups
and terrorists to take over. Many terrorists use 'weak states' as breeding
grounds for future prospects in their organizations. Terrorists offer food,
shelter, health care and education in return for various 'services.' Those ser-
vices could include acts of violence against the United States.
Another problem is that people in the rest of the world will be hesitant
to set up businesses there. Even worse, those that do have businesses there
and travel the world could catch one of these deadly diseases, which could
possibly help spread the viruses.
Bioterrorism can go hand in hand with infectious diseases. The main
scare to those fighting bioterrorism is the reemergence of smallpox. The
vaccine hasn't been given to the general public since 1972. Prior to that it
is estimated that between 300 and 500 million people died of smallpox in the
20th century. Only two labs in the world, one in Atlanta and one in Russia,
have samples of the virus remaining. Two of the vials in Russia have been
reported missing and unaccounted for. Who's to say who got a hold of
them...possibly terrorists? Other ways bioterrorism could hit us is through
toxic gases, food contamination and anthrax. With that being said, our coun-
try has managed to avoid such things over the years, but it hasn't contained
the imminent spread of infectious diseases around the world.
The question is whether our country is headed in the right direction in
terms of how we are protecting it. Defense against infectious disease, or ter-
rorists using biological weapons. In a way they are similar, but in another
way they are totally different. The shift after September 11 has been towards
protecting any form of terrorism, biological warfare included. Our govern-
ment proposes $3.2 billion dollars for AIDS spending both domestic and
international for 2006. For bioterrorism in 2005 we are looking at $7.5 bil-
lion. That funding may be a good solution in the short term because terror-
ism is an immediate threat to the U.S. But terrorist threats in general are.
maybes, ifs, and could be's. Infectious diseases on the other hand, are defi-
nites. Not only are they inevitable, they have similar threats to that of ter-
rorism: economic damage, panic, and chaos. Terrorist threats are a concern,
and probably should be, but maybe people should start thinking of terrorism
and infectious disease as one in the same.

growth. He' believes successful
companies have the desire to contin-
ually improve, not just.themselves,
but the community as well.
"One of the best things is hav-
ing experience in growth and creat-
ing great opportunity," said James.
The YMCA of Greater'St.
Petersburg, with the help of its cor-
porate friends, reached new heights
last year and that growth has carried
over to this year. Through March
31, 2005 the organization had given
away $40,000 in scholarships and
James S. Henderson, chairman of
the board for the "Y", said it intends
to give away more than$400,000 by
the end of the year.

St. Anthony's triathlon
One of the nation's premier multi-sport
events returns to downtown St. Petersburg April
22 24. Beginning with a free Sports & Fitness
Expo on Friday in Vinoy Park, the weekend con-
tinues with the popular Meek & Mighty competi-
tion on Saturday morning, followed that evening
with a live concert by legendary 1970s rockers,
Firefall. On Sunday, St. Anthony's Triathlon kicks
off at 7 a.m. at Spa Beach, downtown at The Pier.
One of Tampa Bay's signature events, St. Antho-
ny's Triathlon has defined a culture focused on fit-
ness and fun for the past 22 years.
Salute to Professional Assistants St. Antho-
ny's Hospital Auxiliary will host its 13th annual
Salute to Professional Assistants on Monday,
April 25, 2005, at the Radisson Hotel and Con-
ference Center, 12600 Roosevelt Boulevard, St.
Petersburg. The event provides a way for business
executives to recognize their professional assis-
tants with nominations for Assistant of the Year.
This event would make a great photo opportunity.
Ten Weeks to a New You The Carillon
Wellness Center hosts a life-changing program
that's based on solid scientific research, not fads,
that has helped dozens of people achieve their
personal fitness goals and start on the road to feel-
ing 10 years younger in just 10 weeks. The next
10-week class begins this month. The program
would make an excellent long-term feature, fol-
lowing participants' progress. It is also a strong
tie-in to national Physical Wellness Month, which
runs throughout April.

Understanding false alarm issues
Alarm systems are meant to bring a sense of
security and peace of mind when properly
installed. However, poorly used, installed, or
maintained, systems can cause significant prob-
lems for both consumers and police. One study
estimates the annual cost of false alarms to police
departments nationwide to be at least $600 mil-
lion.
Several communities in Florida like
Gainesville and Cape Coral have many false
alarm calls that cost taxpayers money and divert
law enforcement officers from real emergencies.
In order to control false alarms and their costs,
many police jurisdictions are adopting laws and
regulations from false alarm fines to requiring
permits or registrations to install an alarm system.
There are many electronic security methods
such as motion detection, audio detection, video
detection, and access control. Some systems are
more prone to false alarms than others; however,
with a verified system an operator can hear and
see what is actually happening during the real-
time break in. This provides law enforcement
with the intelligence, information and investiga-
tive evidence to respond to alarm calls and then
later use this information in court hearings. Com-
pared to the non-verified alarm system which has
a 90 percent false alarm rate and in the same time
it takes a verified system to apprehend the sus-
pects, the non-verified system is just dispatching
the police.

Tampa Bay Water Regional
Surface Water Treatment Facility'
wins Taste Test award
Tampa Bay Water's Regional Surface Water
Treatment Facility, operated by Veolia Water
North America South LLC (Veolia Water), has
the best-tasting water on the Florida Central West
Coast.
Competing at the Region IV Taste Test com-
petition sponsored by the Florida section of the
American Water Works Association, the Tampa

Bay Water/Veolia Water team surpassed seven
entries from the seven-county area that competed
in the regional taste test, including several
groundwater-only systems. A three-person judg-
ing panel, which included Glen Pla, host of the
Average Angler, based its selection on a blind
taste test.
As the regional winner, Tampa Bay Water
will advance to the statewide Drinking Water Day
Taste Test scheduled for April 21 in Tallahassee.
"High-quality, great tasting water that's the
goal of our state-of-the-art facility. We're hon-
ored to receive this regional distinction," said
Jerry L. Maxwell, Tampa Bay Water General
Manager. "Providing high-quality water to our
members and their customers is a top priority, and
it is gratifying to know we've met that goal."
In 2000, Veolia Water (then known as USFil-
ter Operating Services) partnered with Tampa
Bay Water for the design, construction and oper-
ation of the surface water treatment facility. The
facility has been producing high-quality water
since October 2002.
Tampa Bay Water is the largest wholesale

nessy, has committed $20,000 to underwrite this
year's event. Other major business sponsors
include Bank of St. Petersburg, Chambers Law
Group, Harvard Jolly Architects, Highway Safety
Devices, James Harper/Accordia Insurance, St.
Anthony's Health Care, Signature Bank, and
United Bank (soon to be Synovus Bank).
Ford Kyes, CEO of St. Anthony's Health
Care in St. Petersburg and chair of the Resurrec-
tion House Board of Directors, will also be a fea-
tured speaker at the breakfast. Vocalist Celia
Plummer, accompanied by pianist Jeanie Loci-
cero-both musicians from St. Peter's Episcopal
Cathedral in St. Petersburg-will perform "God
Bless the Child," "You Raise Me Up," and "Over
the Rainbow."
Sponsorship of a table for eight at the April
21 New Beginnings Breakfast is $350. Corporate
sponsorships are still available; Individual tickets,
which may be purchased only in advance, cost
$50. For more information, call 727-823-4742 or

son shopping and simple budgeting, she said.
Children should be encouraged to notice whether
they use the things they buy, to educate them
about the pitfalls of impulse purchasing.
Though parents are the best teachers of finan-
cial management, they shouldn't hesitate to con-
sult outside sources, said Jo Turner, a UF profes-
sor of family and consumer economics. Banks,
investment brokers and other firms have recently
begun to offer financial camps and courses aimed
at wealthy youngsters, which can carry a hefty
price tag. But many programs are available at no
cost to consumers, she said.
One example is the nationwide High School
Financial Planning Program offered by the
National Endowment for Financial Education,
Turner said. Available to schools, clubs and
church groups, the program teaches teens what
they need to know to survive on their own. It
includes units on financial planning, career plan-
ning, budgeting, saving and investment, credit and
insurance.
In Florida, the program is co-sponsored by
the UF/IFAS extension service, and parents can
learn more by contacting their local county exten-
sion agent. On a national level, information is
available online at
www.nefe.org/hsfla/index.html.
Financial institutions nationwide are begin-
ning-to offer free programs aimed at individual
families, said Laura Levine, executive director of
Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Litera-
cy, a national, nonprofit organization that pro-
motes financial education for youth, based in
Washington, D.C.
"More and more institutions are realizing that
educating their customers and prospective cus-
tomers is an important part of their business,"
Levine said.
Jump$tart's Web site, ww ~.jumpstart.org,
includes a searchable database describing more
than 500 educational products and programs from
a variety of providers, many offered at no cost to
consumers, she said.
Every other year, the organization conducts a
financial literacy survey of U.S. high-school.
seniors, she said. The most recent, from 2004,
showed that on average students correctly
answered only 52 percent of the survey questions.
Average scores have remained in the 50-percent
range since the survey began in 1997, although
theoretically the average score should be about 70
percent, she said.
Students who took financial education class-
es in school scored higher on the survey than
those who didn't, but nationwide only about one
student in five takes such a class, she said.
Regardless of other opportunities, she said, par-
ents must take an active role helping their children
understand personal finance.
"One of the things our survey showed was
that 58 percent of the kids feel like they learn the
most about finances from their parents," Levine
said. "So even if parents don't feel like experts,
their kids are relying on them."

Parents can get

help teaching kids

financial

responsibility

By Tom Nordlie- UF IFAS

With credit-card debt at staggering levels
among college students, University of Florida
experts say childhood training in money manage-
ment has never been more important. April is
Financial Literacy for Youth Month.
Though elaborate programs aimed at wealthy
youngsters have emerged recently, children from
every income level can and should learn the
basics of personal finance before leaving home,
said Mary Harrison, a consumer education profes-
sor with UF's Institute of Food and Agricultural
Sciences, or UF/IFAS.
"Kids make mistakes, that's why it's impor-
tant to teach them to handle money very early,"
said Harrison, who designed a summer financial
education program, Money Mystery, offered in
several Florida counties through the UF/IFAS
statewide extension service. "Otherwise, they
may have to learn through trial and error when
they get out on their own, and the stakes are high-
er.
Credit-card debt among college students sky-
rocketed in the early 1990s, according to the lend-
ing agency Nellie Mae, a leading provider of
higher-education loans. In 2002 the agency pub-
lished a study showing that among 600 U.S.
undergraduates at public and private four-year
Institutions, 83 percent had at least one credit
card, and those with cards carried an average bal-
ance of more than $2,300. A similar study of
graduate students, published in 2004, showed that
96 percent had one or more credit cards, with an
average debt of more than $7,800.
"One of the main reasons young people drop
out of college today is to work to pay credit-card
debt," Harrison said. "That can have dire conse-
quences because once you're out of college you
may not manage to get back in."
Financial training should begin early and
much of it needs to happen at home, she said.
Parents can start by emphasizing the relation-
ship between money and work, Harrison said.
When children ask for expensive toys or clothes,
parents should let them pay for them, earning
money doing odd jobs. It's a good idea to open
savings accounts for children as soon as they
begin making their own purchases.
"When children learn to save they start to
develop financial priorities," Harrison said. "By
the time you save enough to buy something
expensive.you may find you don't want it enough
to give up all your hard-earned money."
Other early lessons should include compari-
