'Ripple effect' hits Nature Park

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker stands in front of a disp
"Ripple Effect" exhibit. The display is located in the Environ
Center at Boyd Hill and opens to the public on Saturday Marc

Boyd Hill Nature Park held a reception at Lake
Maggiore Environmental Education Center in St. Peters-
burg Tuesday evening for the grand opening of the Rip-
ple Effect exhibit. Among those attending the grand
opening were Mayor Rick Baker, Council Member
Earnest Williams and The Friends of Boyd Hill Nature
Park, which is located at 1101 Country Club Way South
in St. Petersburg
The Ripple Effect, which showcases Boyd
Hill's distinct ecosystem, depicts how all the animals,
plants and non-living matter interact in the park. Lake
Maggiore at Boyd Hill Park is an example of a broad
ecosystem within Pinellas County. Boyd Hill's ecosys-
tem'includes hardwood hammocks, sand pine scrub,
pine flatwoods, willow marsh and Lake Maggiore.
The South Branch Library was transformed
into the Environmental Education Center a little over a
year ago to make way for this exhibit. Most of the struc-
tural money to renovate came from the tax program,
'Pennies for Pinellas.'
The exhibit was funded by the tax funds and
private donations, as well as the city's $100,000 contri-
bution.
Using a series of dioramas and displays, the
exhibit features special interactive panels that show that
every action has an equal or greater reaction in our envi-
ronment.

Highlights include a unique
display of aquatic and animal life
found in Lake Maggiore and an
interactive mole tunnel for children.
"This is a great entry way for
People to come and learn about the
ecosystem in our community," said
Baker. "This is a very child friendly

on. For the council member
Williams, who grew up in a less
Surbanized area of St. Petersburg, the
SRipple Effect display is very unique.
"I spent so many years out
Photo by Scott Afasano here in the woods," he said. "For me
play at Boyd Hill's it's very special. It isn't often you get
mental Education this kind of experience in an urban
:h 19. area like St. Petersburg."
The Ripple Effect will be an
ongoing exhibit that complements the 245-acre award
winning Boyd Hill Park, with live-like and interactive
displays.
"We are real excited about the exhibit," said
employee Ginger Platt. "We' ve been looking forward to
this for a long time. "It's a gift to the community and
hopefully it will put Boyd Hill on the map."
The Friends of Boyd Hill Nature Park con-
tributed a lot of time and money to get the Ripple Effect
exhibit started. They also continue to promote aware-
ness of the park, educate the public, and preserve and
protect the park and surrounding areas.
"Two years ago I didn't see this happening,"
said Friends of Boyd Hill Nature Park President Corey
Smolik. "We've had a lot of support from the city and
different volunteers to get this thing going."
Linda Seufert, a Boyd Hill supervisor, worked
very hard on the exhibit as well and hopes it will have a
lasting impact.
"We want this display to have a positive ripple
that's going to affect generations for years to come," she
boasted.
The City of St. Petersburg and The Friends of
Boyd Hill Nature Park will have their grand opening of
the Ripple Effect exhibit this weekend, March 19 and
20. 'Wildlife Weekend' at Boyd Hill will be free on Sat-
urday from 9 a.m. 4 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. 4
p.m. There will be various presentations about wildlife,
mini-workshops, tram tours, environmental exhibitors, a
petting zoo and more.

celebrate after beating Jones High School from Orlando in the Class 4A state championship game Saturday in Lakeland.
The Spartans rallied from a five point deficit late in the 3rd quarter, led by tournament MVP Mario Telfair and senior Sean
Morrlson (#4), by going on a 7-0 run. Clutch free throw shooting in the fourth quarter helped the Spartans put Jones
away, and pick up the school's second state title in four years.

Third baseman Alex Gonzalez brings age and experience to the Rays'
revamped Infield. The 31-year-old Gonzalez was acquired by the Rays in the
off-season, via free agency.
By Scott Afasano

When the Devil Rays hit the field for their season opener against the
Toronto Blue Jays on April 4, it will mark the beginning of the Rays eighth
season, and as the saying goes "they ain't getting any younger." While the
outfield remains relatively young, the Rays' infield has aged with recent
acquisitions, which the Rays hope will help balance and teach the young ball
club.
In the Rays' infield the average age is 29. The most notable infield-
er that should help the Rays' aging process, and hopefully their younger
players, was the acquisition of 37-year-old Roberto Alomar. The former
Gold-Glove winning second baseman joins a team that had the fifth most
errors in baseball last year with 119. The Rays hope the younger players
such as 23-year-old second baseman Jorge Cantu and 20-year-old shortstop
B.J. Upton can learn from Alomar's experience.
The Rays' first pick in the 2002 draft, Upton, has been compared to
New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter. Upton has struggled with his
defense, which the Rays hope Alomar can help him to improve on. If Upton
gets his defense on track, he may eventually replace current shortstop Julio
Lugo, who led the team with 25 errors last season. The learning period may
be short-lived if Upton is shipped to the Rays' minor league team at the start
of the season. Upton was brought up toward the end of the season last year,
and will probably see some more time in the big leagues this year.
Another veteran that will be able to help the young infield mature
is 31-year-old Alex S. Gonzalez.
Gonzalez is a smooth-fielding defensive whiz with good pop. In 2003
he belted 57 extra-base hits, including 20 home runs.
First baseman Travis Lee returns to the Devil Rays after spending
last year with the Yankees. The 29-year-old Lee had only three errors for
the Rays in 2003. That same year he had the second highest fielding per-
centage in the American League. Backing him up at first base is a 35-year-
old veteran Eduardo Perez. Perez adds much needed depth to the Rays' ros-
ter. If needed, he could play third base, as well as left and right field.
Rounding out the infield are 29-year-old catcher Toby Hall and
backup catcher Kevin Cash. The 27-year-old Cash is a good defensive
catcher who will likely back-up four-year starter Hall.
Where veterans are spread throughout the infield, youth prevails in
the outfield. The average age of the outfield is 24. Leading the pack of
youth is utility man Aubrey Huff. The 28-year-old Huff will more than like-
ly start the season in the outfield. He led the team last season in home runs
(29), batting average (.297) and RBI (104), and holds the all time record for
the Rays in games played (578).
The future of the Rays lies in the right field position. The Rays'
youngest player Delmon Young, a 19-year-old phenom, was the first over-
all selection by the Rays in 2003. Young is the little brother of Dmitri Young
who plays for the Detroit Tigers. Dmitri Young was the fourth player select-
ed by the Cardinals in the 1991 draft. They are the first set of brothers to
each be taken within the first five selections of the MLB draft. Delmon will
start the season in the minor leagues but will possibly be brought up by the
end of the year.
The 23-year-old, stars, Rocco Baldelli and Carl Crawford, are leading
the youth movement for the Rays' outfield. Baldelli will start the season on
the disabled list after tearing his ACL in his knee during the off-season.
Crawford represented the Rays in last year's All-Star game. He can help
teach youngsters Johnny Gomes (24), Joey Gathright (23) and Young once
they are called up from the minors.
Gathright is the fastest player in the Rays' entire organization. The
former high school football player runs a 6.1 in the 60-yard dash and has "
been clocked 3.3 from home to first on a bunt. He is a yery athletic ball
player. The Rays' scout approached him in his high school while Gathright
was leaping over a car in the parking lot. Legend has it, he once jumped
three consecutive cars. When he gets the call, Gathright will add even more
speed to an outfield that is considered by many to be the fastest in baseball.
The irony in the outfield lies in a newly acquired Danny Bautista.
Bautista is a newcomer, yet he is also the oldest outfielder. The younger
Rays will be teaching as well as learning from the former Arizona Dia-
mondback. If the 2001 World Series star can remain healthy, he will help
contribute to an already talented Rays' outfield.

St. Anthony's breaks ground on
new heart center
Crews have broken ground on a 50,000-
square-foot, state-of-the-art heart center that will
complete a multi-million-dollar upgrade in car-
diovascular treatment by St. Anthony's Health
Care.
The three-story outpatient facility will be
connected to the hospital by a pedestrian bridge
and feature a cardiac nuclear medicine imaging
lab, ECP, outpatient echocardiography and gener-
al medical office space. An outpatient cardiac
catheterization lab also will be included at the
facility, along with programs to educate residents
about diabetes and lipid management, coronary
artery disease and preventative measures that can
improve their health.
Studies show that cardiovascular diseases are
the leading cause of death in the United States. An
overwhelming majority of those deaths occur in
people 65 and older. In St. Petersburg, the critical
need for heart services will expand as the city's
elderly population increases and baby boomers
age into retirement.
"Cardiac care will be a crucial component of
the services offered at St. Anthony's," said Ford
Kyes, St. Anthony's president and CEO. "This
new project reflects our efforts to further extend
heart services to the community and provide com-
passionate healing that sets the standard for high-
quality care."
The new heart center represents the final step
in a three-phase plan meant to help St. Anthony's
meet the community's growing need for cardiac
care.
The building is on track for completion in
early 2006.
Automotive history highlights
antique car show
It's the event that features more than 100 pre-
1959 original or restored automobiles, and this
year, the classics won't be the only showpieces.
The St. Petersburg Grand Prix show car will be
featured at this year's event an added bonus for
car enthusiasts.
Members of the Pin-Mar Antique Car Club
will be starting their engines at this year's PinMar
Antique Car Show on Saturday, March 26 from
10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Heritage Village, 11909
125th St. N. in Largo.
Antique cars and one of their modem rac-
ing counterparts are just part of the fun. Vintage
motorcycles as well as a display of historic
license plates will be on hand, and visitors are
invited to design their own. The kids can make
their own Easter bonnets and participate in an
old-fashioned candy walk. Delicious food and
lively music will round out the day's activities.
Free parking and shuttle to the event entrance
is available on 119th Street, between Ulmerton
and Walsingham roads, and admission to the
event is free.
For more information or a calendar of events,
call 582-2123 or visit

St. Petersburg/Clearwater area
tourist revenue up
The forecast this tourist season for the St.
Petersburg/Clearwater is sunny skies with fiigher

revenues. The Tourist Development Tax revenues
for January 2005 was $1,542,236.52, the largest
amount collected in the month of January in a
non-Super Bowl year. In January 2001,when
Super Bowl was held in the area, the net tax rev-
enue was $1,692,145.95, a record amount. The
monies collected this January 2005 represent a
15.28 percent increase over January 2004. For
the first four months of this fiscal year, Tourist
Development Tax receipts are up 10.27 percent
over the corresponding period last year.
"We are extremely pleased with the January
tax collection report. All indications are that the
winter season will remain strong, and barring any
unforeseen circumstances, the St.
Petersburg/Clearwater area is poised for another
record tourism year in 2005," remarked Lee
Daniel, assistant director of the St.
Petersburg/Clearwater Area Convention &
Visitors Bureau.
The Tourist Development Tax currently is
four percent and is collected on all local accom-
modations that are rented for less than six
months. In Pinellas County, the Board of County
Commissioners determines the distribution of
revenue from the Tourist Development Tax. One
of the primary recipients of the proceeds is the St.
Petersburg/Clearwater Area Convention and Visi-
tors Bureau (www.floridasbeach.com), which
works to promote and advertise tourism for
Pinellas County.
