Florida House Representative Frank Farkas hosted "
a town meeting Monday (Jan. 31) regarding elderly this r<
affairs. Farkas along with former State Representative agent
Sandy Murman met with concerned long-term care works
providers and elderly citizens at the Sunshine Senior medic
Center in St. Petersburg. with
The forum focused on a proposed plan and M
restructured bill by Governor Jeb Bush to integrate womr
different programs that help fund and serve home- and
community-based elderly facilities. In order for a bill to said t
be changed or become a law, representatives and help f
committee members must research public reaction so dis

The proposed "Aging Resource Center" wotld be progr
located in three areas throughout the state and would C
serve as a hub for elderly communication and services. discu
"We want the Aging Resource Center to be the elderly
umbrella that will pull all of the resources together that "
elderly people peed," said Farkas. "The problem we plan,'
have had in the past is that the people in need of care joy ot
have to go through many different procedures and center
programs to meet their health care needs." highli
Farkas also added there has been a lack of can k
communication among the programs, hindering their F

Aging Resource Center will be accessible through the we c

Sunday will mark the 39th Super Bowl played since 1967.
For that reason, the Pinellas News gathered 39 numbers,
records and facts relating to America's biggest sports day of the
year.

1 team that plays its home games in a dome has won the
Super Bowl. (St. Louis Rams XXXIV)
S2 and a haiaf million dollars, The minimum cost for 30
seconds of commercial airtime during the Super Bowl:
3 times Tampa has hosted the Super Bowl: 1984, 1991,
and 2001.
4 African American quarterbacks own Super Bowl rings.
(Marlin Briscoe 1973-74 Miami Dolphins, Doug Williams
1987 Washington Redskins, Tony Banks 2000 Baltimore
Ravens, Shaun King 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers)
5 Super Bowl wins each by the Dallas Cowboys and the
San Francisco 49ers. The most of any NFL team.
6 appearances in the Super Bowl by Defensive Tackle
Mike Lodish are the most by any player. He'appeared four
times in a row with the Buffalo Bills from 1991-94 and won
twice in a row with the Denver Broncos in 1998-99.
7 career Super Bowl touchdowns by Jerry Rice, a Super
Bowl record.
8 million pounds of guacamole served in the United
States on Super Bowl Sunday each year.
Sextra points by San Francisco 49er kicker Mike Cofer
is a record for career extra points in the Super Bowl. Cofer
kicked eight extra points in Super Bowl XXIV and one in

and needs.
"Right now the elderly are
having a tough time navigating
through the system," said
Murman. "With the new bill and
an integrated system, case
managers will be able to better
assist them."
The program attempts to
allow the elderly a voice to go
along with a choice. Right now
many senior citizens cannot
Saafford nursing home care, and
B cannot get proper care because
they are unaware or confused
about their health care options.
"Many consumers want to
have home care, assisted living,
or adult day care rather than
nursing homes," explained
Farkas. "What happens is that
these people do not have a
choice. They are forced into
nursing homes, which end up
costing them money along with
the tax payers."
The meeting also talked
about respite care. In the health
care community, respite care is
the gift of time. It refers to
r.,a., l.n w t ,.' temporary care provided to offer
nights forum on caregivers a break.
One woman came to tears
when talking about her daily
re of taking care of her mother and not knowing
or where to turn to for help.
Thank God you had this meeting and discussion of
source center today," said the weeping real-estate
. "I don't know much about how 'the process
s, but I know that I can't afford some of the
:ine or in-home help (respite care) that is out there,
ut having to cheat the system."
Murman, along with others were touched by the
in's plea, and vowed to try and make changes.
Your-story is why we are working hard," Murman
o the woman. '"We want to make it easy to find
or you and people in your situation. The system is
organized. People are going from one program to
er, while going through many numerous eligibility
ams td see how they qualify for health care."
Gulfport mayor Michael Yakes came to the forum to
ss recent meal plan budget cuts for some of his
y residents at Gulfport's senior center.
I know it may seem like no big deal to cut a meal
Said Yakes. "But you can't put a price tag on the
ur elderly people get every day from coming to the
r and socializing. For some of the people'it is the
eight of their day and we don't know how long we
eep it going with these budget cuts."
Funding, transportation, and Medicare were among
their topics brought up during the assembly. The
representatives had a chance to listen to the
unity's problems in hopes of correcting them with
implementation of the proposed resource center and
various solutions.
The reason we are here is to get input from you, so
an make the proper changes in the elongated
ss," said Farkas. "This isn't just a plan for the next
e of years; this is the model for the future.'"

City installing pedestrian friendly
crosswalk signals downtown
Nearly 20 crosswalk signals that will help
pedestrians safely cross the street by counting
down from 15 seconds to zero are now being
installed by city crews in the downtown area.
The first of the signals have been installed at
the following intersections: First Street and
Second Avenue N., Second Street and Second
Avenue N., First Street and First Avenue N.,
Second Street and First Avenue N., Second Street
and First Avenue S.
"I've recently returned from visits to
Washington, D.C. and Indianapolis, where these
new signals are used," said Mayor Rick Baker.
"St. Petersburg will become one of the first cities
in Florida to employ this new technology. It will
be of great benefit in increasing the safety for
pedestrians in our crosswalks, and is part of City
Trails, St. Petersburg's Bicycle/Pedestrian Master
Plan."
Seventeen of the new signals will be installed
within the next two months, with an additional 24
signals being added later to downtown
intersections along Third Street and Fourth Street.
The cost will be paid with state and federal
transportation grant funds and the city's share of
the Penny for Pinellas sales surtax.
"A great benefit of these new countdown
signals is that it provides enhanced information to
pedestrians including those with mobility issues
by telling them how much time is remaining to
safely cross the street", said the city's
Transportation and Parking Director Joe Kubicki.

Florida Botanical Gardens wins
'Best of Show'
Tampa Bay Flower Show officials presented
their Best of Show 2005 award to the Florida
Botanical Gardens for its A Garden for Children:'
How a Garden Grows.
The display highlighted many of the features
that will be incorporated in the upcoming
Children's Garden at the Florida Botanical
Gardens in Largo.
Kids love bugs, they love plants and they love
exploring in nature. The display was therefore
designed with these concepts in mind. A
microscope invites children of all ages to get up
close and personal with the intricacies of nature.
A fire tower provides a birds-eye view of native
woodlands and shows how fire plays an important
role.in the health of its habitats. Giant insects
illustrate many of the visitors to our landscapes. A
pond shows the myriad of creatures that inhabit
the aquatic ecosystems from the microscopic
plants to the trees and plants that thrive on the
shoreline. All this and more are a part of A Garden
for Children- How a Garden Grows. The show
was held Jan. 20-22 at Tropicana Field.
At the inaugural Tampa Bay Flower Show, the
Florida Botanical Gardens tropical display garden
was honored with the American. Horticulture
Society's Environmental Award 2004 for the,
"Best demonstration of skillful design, which
incorporates environmental stewardship in the
garden."

Gardens visit www.flbg.org or call (727) 582-

USF College of Marine Science
hosts talk on impacts of tsunami
The University of South Florida College of
Marine Science will host a presentation entitled:
"Impacts of the 2004 Tsunami in Sri Lanka -
Observations and Indelible Impressions: Science
as Humanitarian Aid," by Robert Morton, a
research geologist at the U.S. Geological
Survey's Center for Coastal and Watershed
Studies. The presentation will be Feb. 4 at 3:30
p.m. in the Karen A. Steidinger Auditorium, 100
8th Ave. SE, St. Petersburg.
Dispatched by the Earthquake Engineering
Research Institute as part ofan international
scientific team, Morton was in Sri Lanka Jan. 7-
18 and saw the devastation firsthand.
"Our mission was to gather information that
might be useful in mitigating risk from future
tsunamis," Morton said. "We gathered
information for predicting the size of a wave,
what it does when it hits the shore, and also
studied patterns of erosion and deposition in its
path."
According to Morton, the Indian Ocean
tsunami hitting Sri Lanka and other areas Dec. 26
changed coast lines "fairly permanently" and, as
an event, can be viewed as part of the Earth's
ongoing geological processes. According to
Morton, the tsunami's geologic effects, like its
social effects, are still being felt globally.
"I was unprepared for what I saw," said
Morton. "I have worked in the aftermath of many
disasters, often in the aftermath of hurricanes. But
the devastation in Sri Lanka was so complete, so
absolute, and seemed to go on forever."
The event is free and open to the public. For
more information call (727) 553-1130 or (727)
896-8626.

Spring Fling offers prospective
students an inside look at
campus life
Instead of spending their College Day at the
beach, prospective college students are invited to
spend a day on the waterfront at USF St.
Petersburg's annual Spring Fling Monday, March
7 from 10 am to 2 pm.
Prospective students can talk to students and
faculty about why they enjoy USF St. Petersburg,
including the big university experience with a
small campus feel. Recruiters will also be on-
hand to answer questions about admissions
requirements, major fields of study, financial aid
and scholarship opportunities that are available to
6nly USF St. Petersburg students.
During Spring Fling, similar to a fall
homecoming event, prospective students can
compete with university students in jousting and
basketball contests, enjoy a free barbecue lunch
and get a souvenir photo key chain.
"This is a great
---------- opportunity for
laylho se prospective students to
really get an inside look
at a university and meet
Ig other college students,"
said John Vassel,
director of prospective
student outreach. "This

ended up being a high scoring affair, with the Patriots
eventually winning 32-29.
27 to 1O was the score of the Philadelphia Eagles, Atlanta
Falcons NFC Championship game this year. The Eagles are
looking for their first ever Super Bowl win. Their last visit to
the Bowl resulted in, ironically enough, a 27-10 loss to the

28 is the jersey number of starting Patriot running back
Corey Dillon. Dillon, who was third in the league in rushing
yards this season, is making his firsttrip to the Super Bowl.

Miami and Oakland for this year's Super Bowl location.
30 minutes is the amount of commercial time during the
Super Bowl.
31-var field goal by Martin Gramatica in Super Bowl
XXXVII marked the first points scored by the Buccaneers in
their short Super Bowl history.
32 completed passes by Patriot Tom Brady in last year's

33 dollars is the amount you needed to buy a Super Bowl
ticket and refreshments in 1980. Tickets to this year's Super
' Bwl are between $500-$600.
34 was the number of Buccaneer Super Bowi MVP
Safety Dexter Jackson wore. Jackson is one of eight defensive
players to take home Super Bowl MVP honors.
35 oiilts scored in a single quarter is a record set by the
Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXII. The Redskins
tallied 35 points in the second quarter en route to a 42-10
beating of the Denver Broncos.,
36._5 thousand dollars is the amount the losing players
will make in this year's Super Bowl. The winners will make

3 -yvear-old John Elway became the oldest quarterback to
win a Super Bowl in 1999. He also won the year before at the
age of 37.
39-vear-old coach Jon Gruden of the Bucs became the
youngest coach to ever win a Super Bowl when he beat his
former team, the Oakland Raiders, 48-21 in 2003.
