1995 Florida Soybean Variety Trials

Introduction

In 1995, soybean variety trials were conducted at seven locations in north-central and
west Florida (see map). These trials were designed to evaluate yield, agronomic characteristics
and nematode resistance for maturity groups (MG) IV, V, VI, VII and VIII. The seven variety
trials conducted in 1995 were:

1. A variety performance trial planted on June 15, 1995 consisting of 51 entries, was
evaluated for yield potential. The site of this trial was at NFREC, Quincy, on a field
without nematode pressure. Entry F91-1577B was omitted from the analysis due to
poor germination.

2. A preliminary variety performance trial planted on June 15, 1995 consisting of 20
entries, was evaluated for yield potential. The site of this trial was at NFREC, Quincy,
on a field without nematode pressure.

3. A late planted variety performance trial planted on July 10, 1995 consisting of 51
entries, was evaluated from yield potential. The site of this trial was at NFREC,
Quincy, on a field without nematode pressure. Entry F91-1577B was omitted from the
analysis due to poor germination.

4. A late planted preliminary variety performance trial planted on July 10, 1995,
consisting of 20 entries, was evaluated for yield potential. The site of this trial was at
NFREC, Quincy on a field without nematode pressure.

5. A variety performance trial consisting of 51 entries grown on soils infested with
southern root-knot nematodes at the WFREC, Jay.

6. A variety performance trial consisting of 51 entries grown on soils infested with peanut
root-knot at the Davis Brothers' Farm, Allentown.

7. A variety performance trial consisting of 51 entries grown on soils infested with a low
level of race 3 soybean cyst nematode at WFREC, Jay.

Methods

The experimental design for all trials was a randomized complete block with four
replications. Row widths were from 30 to 36 inches. The experiments were analyzed using
analysis of variance, and Duncan's Multiple Range Test of least significant differences (LSD)
at 0.05.

Seeding rate was nine seeds per foot of row (12 seeds per foot for the late planted
trials). Plots were planted using plot planters.

Yield was determined from the middle one or two rows except when stands or plants
were weak on one side of the plot, in which case, border rows were used. Harvested area was
generally between 80 to 96 square feet. Grain was stored for a short time under uniform
moisture to obtain the same moisture for all samples. Yields are reported as bushels per acre
(60 lb/bu) at 13% moisture.

Maturity date was when more than 95 % of the pods had mature color.

Height was the average distance (inches) from the ground to the tip of the main stem at
maturity.

Lodging was rated at harvest using the following scale:

1 Almost all plants erect
2 All plants leaning slightly, or a few plants down
3 All plant leaning moderately, or 25-50% of the plants down
4 All plants leaning considerably, or 51-80% of the plants down
5 Almost all plants down

Root-knot nematode galling index was determined to evaluate damage by root-knot
nematodes.

Percent of Root Surface Galled
0-4 Scale
None 0
Trace <5% 0.2
Trace 6-25% 1.0
26-50% 2.0
51-75% 3.0
76-100% 4.0

Cyst nematode resistance was determined by yield comparisons on yields of soybeans
grown on field with a low level of soybean cyst nematodes.

All three tests planted in nematode infected soil were not harvested for yield in 1995
due to adverse weather conditions from hurricanes Erin (4 August) and Opal (4 October). Plots
were destroyed by heavy winds and flooded conditions.

New Techniques in Soybean Production: Roundup Ready Soybeans

The biotechnology era as it relates to agronomic crop production is just beginning. The
Roundup Ready (RR) Technology from Monsanto was approved for use in late 1995 and is the
first for soybeans. Companies have spent millions of dollars bringing this technology to pass.
Monsanto has set a $5.50/bag technology fee for use of this technology in soybeans.
Likewise, RR seed from companies will also be sold for a premium at a similar price as any of
their elite brands. Yields from the RR varieties must be comparable to standard varieties and
data from the Quincy location shows that to be the case.

This technology will be marketed from the standpoint that no residual herbicides will
be needed with it. Data from Quincy and Jay show that two or at the most three applications
of Roundup at 1 pt/A will be needed to control weeds in soybeans. These applications should
be made when a flush of weeds appear and get 3 5" tall. Wide rows (30-36") may require
three applications of 1 pt/A while narrow or drilled rows require two applications. Most mid-
west growers may find that one Roundup application will be sufficient for excellent weed
control. Our studies in strip tilled soybeans showed no yield increases from addition of
residual herbicides with Roundup.

A general rule of thumb for application rates of Roundup on RR soybeans is as follows:

Roundup Rates on Roundup Ready Soybeans
Weed Size Roundup pt/A
0-6" 1-1V2
6-12" 11/2-2
12-18" 2-3

All RR soybean varieties developed must tolerate 64 oz/A of Roundup. Roundup may
be applied over the top of soybeans from cracking until harvest although most applications
should be made early to control weeds before competition gets bad.

There will be three companies that have RR soybeans in 1996. Asgrow will have 85%
of them of the RR soybeans offered for sale in 1996. Jacob Hartz has three group V, one
group VI, and one group VII variety that will be available in very limited supply and Pioneer
will have four group III varieties available. Demand will exceed supply by 5 to 10 fold in
1996. Public varieties will not be excluded from this technology and may sign marketing
agreements as private companies have.

This technology is very exciting to the soybean industry and along with other transgenic
characteristics will change the way farming is done. More no-till and conservation tillage is
expected since there will be no reason to cultivate. Delays in controlling weeds due to weather
will result in using slightly higher rates of Roundup with no detrimental effects on the
soybeans. Many other transgenic characteristics are expected to be released for farmer use in
the next 10 years resulting in more changes in farming than has occurred in the past 100 years.

tests were made on 7 September and 11 September, respectfully. No additional data was taken from these tests or
from the soybean cyst nematode test due to adverse weather conditions from hurricanes Erin (4 August) and Opal
(4 October).
