1993 Florida Soybean Variety Trials


Introduction

In 1993, soybean variety trials were conducted at four locations in
north-central and west Florida (see map). These trials were designed to
evaluate yield, agronomic characteristics and nematode resistance for
maturity groups (MG) V, VI, VII and VIII varieties. Five categories of
variety trials were conducted in 1993.

1) A variety performance trial consisting of 35 entries, was
evaluated for yield potential. The site of this trial was at
NFREC, Quincy on a field without nematode pressure.

2) A variety performance trial consisting of 35 entries grown on
soils infested with southern root-knot nematodes at the AREC,
Jay.

3) A variety performance trial consisting of 35 entries grown on
soils infested with peanut root-knot nematodes at the Davis
Brothers' Farm, Santa Rosa County.

4) A variety performance trial consisting of 35 entries grown on
soils infested with a low level of race 3 soybean cyst nematodes
at AREC, Jay.

5) A preliminary performance trial consisting of seven advanced
breeding lines or recently released varieties grown on soil
without nematode pressure at the NFREC, Quincy.


Methods

The experimental design for all trials was a randomized complete block
with four replications. In the trials in which yield was measured, three-
or four-row plots were used with the middle one or two rows, respectively,
harvested either by hand or plot combine. Row widths were from 30 to 36
inches. The experiments were analyzed using analysis of variance and least
significant differences (LSD) at 0.05.

Planting rate was nine seeds per foot of row (12 seeds per foot for
the late planted trials). Plots were planted using cone planters.

Yield was determined from the middle one or two rows except when
stands or plants were weak on one side of the plot, in which case, border
rows were used. Harvested area was generally between 80 and 96 square
feet. Grain was stored for a short time under uniform moisture to obtain
the same moisture on all samples. Yields are reported as bushels per acre
(60 lb/bu) at 13% moisture.

Maturity date was when more than 95% of the pods had their mature
color.












Height was the average distance (inches) from the ground to the tip
of the main stem at maturity.

Lodging was rated at harvest using the following scale:

1 Almost all plants erect
2 All plants leaning slightly, or a few plants down
3 All plants leaning moderately, or 25-50% of the plants
down
4 All plants leaning considerably, or 51-80% of plants
down
5 Almost all plants down

Shattering was not rated because of infrequent occurrence.

Root-knot nematode galling index was determined to evaluate damage
by root-knot nematodes.

Cyst nematode resistance was determined by plant yield comparisons
on yields of soybeans grown on field with a low level of soybean cyst
nematodes.


New Techniques in Soybean Production

There are several ways to reduce production costs of soybeans that
have not been widely used including the following:

1. No-till plus in-row subsoiling without irrigation and no-till
with a drill otherwise.

2. Trap cropping This involves planting 8 to 12 rows of a group
IV soybean around the perimeter of the field. These group IV
soybeans are indeterminate and insects seem to migrate to them
rather than the entire field. Insects may be controlled by
spraying a single application of insecticide on the group IV
soybeans. Frequent scouting is necessary. The only group IV
soybeans recommended are NK S4884 which is a tall variety with
cyst race 3 and moderate southern root-knot resistance and DP
3456. These varieties yield well and have good seed quality.












3. Weed scouting and using the HERB computer program which
determines the best post emergence herbicides at the least
cost. Scouting at 7 to 14 days after emergence to determine
weeds present is a key.
