CITRUS MOLASSES, BLACKSTRAP MOLASSES, OATS, STILBESTROL, TERRAMYCIN, -
AND AUREOMYCIN IN STEER FATTENING RATIONS.

In two trials, citrus molasses gave much better results than blackstrap
molasses when both were fed at high levels (equal weights molasses and ground
snapped corn) in the ration.1 In one trial, both imported blackstrap and
straight mill run blackstrap molasses fed at a level of only 5 pounds in the
ration produced fair steer gains and satisfactory finish.2 Widespread use of
blackstrap molasses by steer feeders in the North Florida area has resulted
in generally unsatisfactory feed consumption and gains unless the molasses is
fed at a level of less than one-third of the ground snapped corn in the ration*

In one trial diethylstilbestrol fed at levels of 10 and 20 mg. per
head daily in rations consisting of ground snapped corn, citrus molasses,
cottonseed meal and hay resulted in 10 and 16 percent higher gain than the
control group not fed stilbestrol.2 Carcass grades did not appear to be
affected.

The value of antibiotics in swine rations is generally recognized.
Since results from feeding antibiotics to beef cattle have been rather variable,
it was considered timely to try both terramycih and aureomycin in steer
fattening rations commonly fed in this area.

An increasing quantity of oats is available in the area for cattle
feeding. Previous work indicated that ground oats could replace one-half of
the ground snapped corn in fattening rations for steer calves.3 As most of
the cattle fed in this section at present are yearling steers, it was considered
advisable to try oats in a fattening ration.

Fifty good quality Hereford and Angus yearling steers, purchased in
Mississippi, were allotted as equally as possible to experimental groups in
dry lot. These cattle were started on feed on pasture before being allotted.
When they were put in dry lot, they were weighed and 3 percent deducted from
these weights to obtain the initial weights. At the completion of the trial
the cattle were picked-up in the morning before feeding, trucked to Quincy,
weighed, and 3 percent deducted to obtain the final weights. Thus, the initial
weights were shrunk 3 percent and final weights about 4 percent (including
actual shrink in trucking to market) from feedlot weights. Gains and carcass
yields were calculated on the basis of shrunk weights.

Steers were slaughtered by experimental groups at Florida Packing
Company in Quincy when they obtained a satisfactory degree of finish in the
opinion of cattle buyers.

STILBESTROL IN THE RATION

Results from feeding stilbestrol in both citrus and blackstrap molasses
rations are given in Table 1-580.

Steers fed 10 mg. stilbestrol per head daily (recommended rate) in a
citrus molasses ration (Lot II) gained 13 percent faster than the control group
not fed stilbestrol (Lot I) and 7 percent faster than the group fed 20 mg.
stilbestrol (Lot III). There was no difference in gains made by the stilbestrol
group (Lot VII) and control group (Lot VI) on blackstrap molasses rations, but
it should be noted that neither of these groups on high level blackstrap molasses
rations made satisfactory gains.

Carcasses of cattle fed 10 mg. stilbestrol in both citrus and blackstrap
molasses rations (Lots II and VII) did not appear to be quite as well finished
as the carcasses from the respective control groups (Lots I and VI). However,
it should be pointed out that the carcasses from the group fed 20 mg. stilbestrol
in a citrus molasses ration were as well finished as those from any group in the
experiment. While this one trial does not show that feeding stilbestrol resulted
in less finish, it emphasizes the fact that cattle fed stilbestrol should not be
slaughtered earlier than they normally would be if not fed stilbestrol.

Steers on citrus molasses rations which received stilbestrol (Lots II and
III) made slightly more efficient and consequently cheaper gains than the controls
not fed stilbestrol (Lot I). There was not much difference in the feed efficiency
and cost of gain of the stilbestrol (Lot VII) and non-stilbestrol (Lot VI) cattle
on blackstrap molasses rations. It should be noted that both groups of cattle on
blackstrap molasses consumed considerably less concentrates and more hay per day
than the comparable groups on citrus molasses rations. The lower concentrate
consumption on the blackstrap rations probably explains the slower gains and
longer time required to finish the cattle in Lots VI and VII.

Table 2-580 shows the results from feeding 80 mg. terramycin and 80 mg.
aureomycin per head daily to groups of cattle on citrus molasses and ground
snapped corn rations. Steers in both groups also received 10 mg. stilbestrol
daily. Gains, feed efficiency, and cost of gain of the group fed terramycin
(Lot IV) and the group fed aureomycin (Lot V) did not differ greatly from the
control group (Lot II) which received stilbestrol without an antibiotic.

Feeding a limited quantity of ground oats in a corn-citrus molasses ration
(Lot X) resulted in lower feed consumption and slower gains. Carcass grades and
yields of the cattle in this group were very satisfactory, but it should be noted
that they were fed 29 days longer before slaughter than comparable cattle which
were not fed oats (Lot II).

SUMMARY
Steers fed 10 mg. stilbestrol daily (recommended rate) in a corn-citrus
molasses ration gained 13 percent faster than the control group not fed stilbestrol
and 7 percent faster than cattle fed 20 mg. stilbestrol.

Feeding 80 mg. of either terramycin or aureomycin in addition to 10 mg.
stilbestrol per steer daily did not increase gains or feed efficiency.

When fed in equal weight with ground snapped corn, citrus molasses gave
much better results than blackstrap molasses. Alternate feedings of the two
molasses in the same ration produced better gains than the blackstrap but not as
good as the citrus molasses ration.

A ration with 5 pounds blackstrap molasses and all the ground snapped
corn the cattle would consume (approximately 3 parts corn to one part molasses)
produced excellent gains.

Feeding a limited quantity (approximately 3 pounds per head daily) of
ground oats in a corn-citrus molasses ration resulted in lower feed consumption,
slower gains, and a longer time required to finish.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on steer feeding work conducted to date, the following recommendations
can be made:

Citrus Molasses
1. If citrus molasses is cheaper per ton than ground snapped corn,feed
a level of molasses up to an equal weight of corn and molasses.
2. If citrus molasses is higher than corn, feed 5 pounds per head daily
molasses and all the corn the cattle will eat.

Blackstrap molasses
1. Regardless of price, do not feed blackstrap molasses at a level
higher than one-third (5 to 7 lbs. per head daily) the quantity
of ground snapped corn fed.

Stilbestrol
1. Feed 10 mg. per steer daily. Be sure cattle are fed for as long
a period of time as if stilbestrol were not fed. In other words,
do not assume that stilbestrol-fed cattle finish earlier just
because they gain more.
