Use of Dehydrated Water Hyacinths In Swine Diets 1

The mechanical harvesting of several species of aquatic plants provides the

livestock industry with by-products having potential as a valuable feed ingredient.

The present study was conducted to investigate the feeding value of dehydrated

water hyacinths (Eichhornia crassipes) when included in the diets of growing and of

finishing swine. _.

Two experiments were conducted with water hyacinths harvested at fresh water

sites in Central Florida. The hyacinths were chopped, pressed and deh rated in

modified Hiller equipment under the supervision e fi.Wa4Feh'f <( 'nntrol

Division of the Florida Game and Fresh Water FisT"CSommission.

Experiment 1. Sixty pigs having an initial weight of 31 pounds were fed

diets containing 0, 2.5 or 5.0% water hyacinths for a 9 week period.

Experiment 2. Thirty-five pigs weighing an average 180 pounds were given

diets containing 0, 5, 10, 20 or 30% hyacinth for 35 days.

In both experiments the protein content of the water hyacinths was considered

in maintenance of calculated isonitrogenous diets within experiments. All pigs were

self-fed in concrete-floored pens with water furnished by automatic watering devices.

The composition of the experimental diets is presented in Table 1.

Results and Discussion


The performance data are summarized in Table 2.

In experiment 1 pigs fed diets containing 0, 2.5 or 5.0% dehydrated water

hyacinths had similar rates and efficiencies of gain. Chemical analysis of hyacinths

shows a wide range of several nutrients: Protein, 5.20%; other extract, 1 2.5%;

crude fiber, 13 20%; ash 5 7%. Both fiber and ash have been used to restrict

feed intake. However, the quantity of these two substances contributed by 5%

dietary hyacinths would not be expected to significantly influence rate and efficiency

of gain.

In experiment 2 all dietary levels of hyacinths adversely affected rate and

efficiency of gain with the severity increasing with increasing levels of dietary

hyacinths. The reason for this is not readily apparent although as evidenced by

feed intake it would appear to be associated with palatability. Daily feed intake

of pigs given 5, 10, 20 or 30% hyacinths was 73, 58, 51 and 42% respectively of

that consumed by control pigs.

The difference in response to diets containing 5% hyacinths in experiments 1

and 2 indicate that the presence and/or concentration of the factors) affecting

feed intake is seasonal. Consequently, hyacinths harvested in Sept-Oct. may have

less feeding value for swine than those harvested in the Spring.

Summary

Growing pigs were fed diets containing 0, 2.5 and 5% dehydrated water hyacinths

(Spring harvested) for a 9 week period. Rate and efficiency of gain was comparable

for all dietary treatments.

Finishing pigs were given Fall harvested hyacinths at dietary concentrations

of 0, 5, 10, 20,and 30%. Rate and efficiency of gain decreased significantly with

increasing dietary levels of hyacinths.


A seasonal difference in feeding value of dehydrated water hyacinths was


indicated by performance data.
