OXYTETRACYCLINE ALONE AND IN COMBINATION/
WITH MYCOSTATIN FOR GARBAGE-FED SWINE

In the state of Florida, garbage-fed swine supply a significant part
of the total pork consumed by our population. At our state institutions,
such as prisons and hospitals, practically all of the table waste is uti-
lized in swine feeding. A comparatively small amount of experimental data
is presently available on garbage feeding. Information in this area of
swine production is badly needed to improve the efficiency of such feeding
programs,


The study here reported was undertaken to obtain information on an-
tibiotic supplementation of garbage rations. Of particular interest ~as
the possible usefulness of mycostatin, a new anti-fungal antibiot']i :'"

Experimental Procedure I' :

The study, consisting of two trials, was conducted at th aiford /
State Prison Farm. The animals used in both trials were mixed ssbred
pigs (mostly Duroc X Poland China) which had been raised at the 'ts"-'l
farm. In each trial ninety animals were divided into three comparaT_" '
groups of thirty pigs according to initial weight. Each group of pigs
was then confined to a small pasture area of approximately one acre. A
limited amount of grazing was available to the pigs of Trial I. However,
during Trial II practically no grazing was available. The animals were
fed once per day. In addition to the garbage, a given amount of a sup-
plemental feed mixture and shelled corn were fed. The antibiotics were
added to the supplemental feed mixture at a level (200 gm, per ton) cal-
culated to provide approximately 25 gm. antibiotic per ton of total dry
ration equivalent. When both antibiotics were fed to a group of pigs
(Lot 3) the total antibiotic intake was approximately 50 gm. per ton of
dry feed equivalent. The supplemental feed mixture was as follows:


IOxytetracycline supplied by Chas. Pfizer Co., Inc., Terre Haute, Indiana;
Mycostatin supplied by the Squibb Institute for Medical Research, New
Brunswick, New Jersey.

The experimental treatments imposed for both trials were as follows:

Lot I Control
Lot 2 Supplemented with oxytetracycline
Lot 3 Supplemented with oxytetracycl'ine and mycostatin

Trial I. In this trial ample garbage was available throughout the
test and the pigs were fed essentially a full ration. The exact daily
feeding schedule per lot (all lots were fed the same amount of feed during
the entire trial) was as follows:

First 7 days 33 gal. cooked garbage containing 20 lb. of supple-
ment; 60 Ib. shelled corn.
Second 7 days 40 gal. cooked garbage containing 20 Ib.pf supple-
ment; 75 Ib. shelled corn.
Third 7 days 45 gal. cooked garbage containing 20 Ib. of supple-
ment; 75 Ib. shelled corn.
Next 21 days 50 gal. cooked garbage containing 20 Ib. of supple-
ment; 85 lb. shelled corn.
Last 6 days 50 gal. cooked garbage containing 20 Ib. of supple-
ment; 90 Ib. shelled corn.

This trial was initiated on March 4, 1958 and terminated April 22,
1958.

Trial II. Insufficient garbage was available during this trial, so
the animals did not receive a full ration. The exact daily feeding sche-
dule per lot (all lots were again fed the same amount of feed during the
entire trial) was as follows:

First 15 days 28 gal. of cooked garbage containing 25 lb. of sup-
plement; 50 Ib. shelled corn.
Last 37 days 33 gal. of cooked garbage containing 25 Ib. of sup-
plement; 50 Ib. shelled corn.

This trial was initiated on June 21, 1958 and terminated on August 12,
1958.

Results and Discuss ion


Results of the feeding trials are summarized in Tables I and 2. The
overall performance of the animals in Trial I (Table I) was considerably
better than that of the pigs in Trial II (Table 2). The restricted feed
intake of the pigs in Trial II undoubtedly accounted for most of this dif-
ference in performance. Environmental temperatures were also less favor-
able during the period of Trial II. However, the response to antibiotic
supplementation was similar In the two trials. Oxytetracycline (Lot 2)
Improved gains in both trials, somewhat more In Trial II than in Trial I.
The combination of oxytetracycline and mycostatin (Lot 3) produced a very
marked response In gains in both trials over the controls (Lot I) and the
oxytetracycline supplemented lots (Lot 2). Since all lots were fed the
same amount of feed the increased gains were solely a reflection of im-
proved feed conversion. Feed costs and returns show a definite advantage
for antibiotic supplementation, particularly for the combination. Al-
though the cost of the antibiotics is not included in the cost figures,
it is apparent that they more than paid their way in this study. This
is especially true for mycostatin.


Summary

One hundred and eighty pigs were fed in two trials to determine
the supplemental feeding value of oxytetracycline alone and in combin-
ation with mycostatin for pigs fed garbage on dirt lots. Oxytetracycline
improved rate of gain in both trials. When mycostatin was included in
the ration a marked additional response in gains was obtained.
