Iguanas entrenched in waterfront neighborhoods

BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
They eat everything in sight. They make a mess. They
won't leave.
No, they're not relatives visiting from up North. These
houseguests are iguanas and they love a waterfront view.
Land overlooking canals, rivers and the like, it seems,
are the reptiles' habitat of choice. The water serves as their
natural travel and escape routes. So it comes as no surprise
that in South Florida the critters can be found lounging on
docks and pool decks in many residential neighborhoods.
Some folks think the reptiles are exotic, decorative fix-
tures for their property. But not everyone's enthused. The
lizards dine on foliage, leave droppings everywhere and can
aggravate erosion by digging holes in the banks of canals
and behind seawalls.
The population is estimated to be in the hundreds of
thousands and growing. As their numbers increase, the cost
of maintenance for homeowners is also expected to climb,
said William Kern, Jr., associate professor of entomology
and nematology at the University of Florida Fort Lauderdale
Research and Education Center in Davie.
"What we're seeing is that people are spending more
time and money to repair damages," he said.
Kern's becoming a popular go-to guy for folks wanting
to know how to tackle their iguana problems. He's getting
requests to attend public talks including a recent symposium
held in West Palm Beach.
Most people he encounters want to know how to
get rid of the spiny-backed landscape munching, pooping
machines.
It's not easy. The region's iguana invasion began with
pets released into the wild, either by accident or on purpose.
The latter is illegal since iguanas are not native to Florida,
Kern said.
Over time, the adults began reproducing and with few
predators to thin the ranks, iguanas are thriving. Three of the

Debate continues
BY ARNOLD MARKOWITZ
Waterfront News Fishing Columnist
At first glance, the beginnings
of a plan for boat moorings in
Biscayne National Park might look
more than a little micro a matter
of concern for divers and sailors,
sure, but not much for fishing-doers
to care about.
Oh, no. There's plenty here for
us to care about and to sound off
about when Biscayne begins a series
of three public hearings early in July. Sure, there will be more
down the line but passing these up may be a decision to rue.
As a fisherman, I cherish the chance to get my two bits'
worth on the record right at the start. I want my ideas to stick
in the minds of Biscayne superintendent Mark Lewis and the
park staff who are asking for our views.
By the time the planning process ends and decisions are
made (no, the time frame isn't predictable), I want them think-
ing the way you and I think, or at least thinking that our views
make too much sense to put aside.
Sailors, divers and spear fishermen are going to be there

species have become well established in the region. Most
common are the green iguanas, whose life span ranges from
10 to 20 years and can grow up to 6 feet long. They can defe-
cate about a pound of feces per day, he said.
There's also the Mexican spiny-tailed iguanas and black
iguana from Central America, according to the research cen-
ter's website.
"They're a nuisance," said Mark Streisfeld, an inventor
from Boca Raton. "They're causing millions of dollars in
damages."
Streisfeld's heard repeated complaints from neighbors
and has experienced damages first-hand too. He accuses
iguanas of eating up the flowering plants, making holes in

canal banks and ripping screens at The Palms, a residential
community resting on the Hillsboro Canal where he serves
on the homeowners association board.
Streisfeld did more than listen. He's come up with what
he deems is a humane way to make the buggers scram by
selling an organic pesticide called Iguana-Rid. He put the
product on the market two months ago.
The deterrent spray causes a burning sensation in the
reptile's mouths when they eat foliage, making them leave
the property. For places where there are no feeding grounds
such as docks, the product emits a smell that drives them

Input to determine whether mooring fields are mandatory

----IVm ii =1
Questions, questions
I peppered Elsa Alvear, Biscayne's chief of resource man-
agement, with questions about the plans, which are somewhere
short of embryonic at the moment.
Seems like the National Park Service is saying let's kick it
around; you go first.
"We're really at the 'ideas' stage at this point," Alvear
said. "We'd like to hear from the public if they want mooring
fields, if they want more channel markers... if the public wants
more information and/or regulatory markers in the shallows to
prevent groundings, if they want mooring buoys and dive cards
for the historic shipwrecks, et cetera."
Another issue on the agenda involves channel markers.
Should there be more?
Of course. Markers should make it easy to move from the
Intracoastal Waterway to popular sites like Boca Chita without
going aground on the way. It's probably the best way to pre-
vent environmental wounds like the horrid scarring of
Featherbed Bank.
As for moorings, the park has them now over seven reefs
and three historic shipwrecks, with as few as one to as many as
five buoys, subject to storm losses. All are on the ocean side of
the island chain. Use of the buoys is restricted to one boat at a
time with a four-hour limit. Maximum boat length is 45 feet.
Those buoys are scattered over a range of about 9 nautical
miles from Soldier Key and Fowey Rock on the north to Ball
Buoy reef at the park's southeast end. Density is greatest in the
southern third.
How much more density is acceptable to the sailors and
divers who moor? How many moorings in any given square mile
will it take to remind Yogi Berra of the restaurant that used to be
his favorite? ("Nobody goes there any more. Too crowded.')
In a comparatively compact national park like Biscayne, do
we really want so many moorings in one place that we're forced
to call it a mooring field with the loss of elbow room and tran-
quility that implies? No, but we may be unable to avoid it.
"One proposal we've heard is to establish a mooring field
in the Sands Cut area, where many boaters gather on week-
ends, to prevent overcrowding and allow the sea grasses to
recover," Alvear said. "We want to hear from the public if that

Map Courtesy National Park Service

state their views at three public hearings.
is something they desire."
The Sands Cut discussion is an old one. In effect, it's an
unofficial anchorage now and has been for decades.
From a fishing point of view, a small mooring say five
boats, tops at Sands Cut would be nice. With fewer anchors
digging into shallow water, in time the sea grasses would
recover and nurture hordes of tiny marine creatures.
All right, but where would you send the other boaters who
enjoy social gatherings at Sands? Would they respond favor-

ably to a four-hour time limit at a small number of far-apart
moorings, or react against it?
"There are other areas like that too in the park -
Biscayne Channel, for example," Alvear said. "Should cri-
teria be set regarding density of boats? How far apart
should mooring buoys be from each other? If there are
mooring buoys in an area, should that area be a no-anchor
zone, and if so, how large?"
I wonder how many boaters spend how much time cir-
cling the mooring sites, waiting for someone to leave, the
way car drivers cruise a crowded parking garage. What an
ugly, offensive notion. Will it become common in Biscayne
unless we support laying out more and larger mooring
fields? And if that's one solution, is it one we want in a
national park?
I asked Alvear if there's any data on mooring field cir-
clers you know, something that proves there aren't
enough moorings, that can tell us if we must have more, and
if so how many.
"It is very hard to determine if people are futilely looking
for a place to moor, as people rarely report back to the head-
quarters regarding such experiences,"Alvear said. "We are hop-
ing people relate this kind of information at these meetings."
Feedback: Want to disagree? Float a better idea?

Iguanas charm some people, annoy others

away, Streusel said.
To date, sales are going well. "Some of my biggest
clients are waterfront homeowners," Streisfeld said.
Bob Cooper's also offering assistance. As president
of Bill Cooper Marine Construction in Davie, he repairs
seawalls. But he doesn't blame iguanas for all of the
deterioration.
"Many of the holes are caused by natural erosion from
age and the tides," Cooper said. "The iguanas take advantage
of that, see the holes and make it their home. We find that all
the time. They add to a problem that was already there, but
their not creating the problem. We explain this to homeown-
ers all the time."
Still, iguanas can be a pain. Cooper's been in business
for some 40 years. Iguana sightings were rare until around a
decade ago when he began spotting them more frequently.
"They're everywhere," Cooper said.

advisory board, said he too sees iguanas on residential docks
along the New River and Las Olas Isles. No one's come to
the advisory board with complaints and he hasn't experi-
enced too many problems personally.
"But that doesn't mean they don't exist," Terrill said.
"They're definitely out there. They poop all over the docks."
John Beauchamp, a realtor at Intercostal Realty in Fort
Lauderdale, doesn't have to look far. He finds them in his
backyard, sunning on the pool deck and gorging on mangoes
from his trees.
"These things, some are 4-and-a-half to 5 feet long,"
he said. "They eat a lot and leave their calling cards every-

The iguanas are all over Fort Lauderdale's eastern
waterfront, where Beauchamp resides. "They're taking
over," he said.
But from a real estate standpoint, it's not affecting sales.
"To many people, they're cute," Beauchamp said.

A failure to

communicate

BY MARK ERCOLIN
Waterfront News Columnist
I'm sure you've seen this in a lot of
old crime movies: A tough-looking guy
walks into a room to confront some fel-
low who either owes or is asking for
money. As the tough guy comes menac-
ingly close to the fellow, he says in a
heavy Brooklyn accent, "Me think(s) we
have a failures to communicate(s)!"
As cliche' as this scene might be, it
can illustrate the conflicts between boat
owners and boatyards. From my experi-
ence, the problem is that far too often the
relationship begins with an informal
arrangement.
Now, don't get me wrong: socially,
a sense of camaraderie and informality
with parties you do business with is usu-
ally a good thing. However, when it
comes to business agreements and con-
tracts, for the protection of everyone
involved, you can never be too formal. In
fact, a failure to keep business agree-
ments as formal as possible can end with
both a ruined transaction as well as a
ruined friendship between client and
service provider.
Indeed, the concept of making a deal
verbally and sealing it with a "spit and a
handshake" should be discarded for even
the best of comrades when it comes to
work on a boat. And, yes, even small boats!
Too many relationships go south fast
once a disagreement ensues. The parties
end up in court with only a few scraps of
incomplete paperwork to bolster their
particular side of the argument. Possibly
there's a few witnesses who may appear
self-serving in their testimony, resulting
in a decision by the judge or jury that
generally satisfies no one, and leaves
both parties with large legal bills.
In order to prevent this outcome,
and to maintain good relations between

the boatyard and boat owner, here's my
suggestions. First, my advice to the boat
owner:
Never say, "I don't care how much
it costs, just fix it!" This is an ultimate
no-no. Don't even say a variation on this
phrase. You will be taken at your word.
Before going to the yard, try to
understand the problem you want fixed.
Even if you are a neophyte boater, this
should not be as difficult as it sounds.
Mainly, try to narrow down what's wrong
with your vessel (if you're a true mariner
this "feel" should become part of your
psyche, anyway). Write down trouble
areas along with any questions you might
have for the boatyard personnel.
Remember, it's your boat, so no question
is too dumb.
If you are given a contract to sign,
review it carefully. Again, don't be afraid
to ask questions. Read the fine print!
Note: Actually, the fact that the yard
is giving you a contract is a good thing.
Again, don't forget to read it. And, don't
be afraid to negotiate any desired modi-
fications and have it amended in writ-
ing. Remember, do these things before
you sign.
In the same vein, ask about war-
ranties on the work to be performed and
on the products being installed. Get as
much detail as possible on how the yard
plans to honor warranties and how you
will deal if your boat is in a location
that makes it impractical or impossible
for the yard to service you. Again, get it
in writing!
Finally, don't be afraid to ask for
scheduled updates on work and estimated
changes in costs. Again, get it in writing!
The yard owner also plays a part in
this formal communication. And I think

Dead

Reckoning

Youthful boatin

indiscretions

BY BOB E. SHERMAN
Waterfront News Columnist
When I was 14-years-old, I told my
father I wanted a boat. He said, "OK, I'll
match whatever you save this summer."
This was a safe bet since I didn't
have a job. Was he surprised when I got a
job and saved $300! I worked as a caddy
at the Manasquan River Golf Club in
New Jersey, where I could have made a
lot more money if they let me carry two
bags. The caddy master thought I was too
small, so I carried singles only.
In the end, I did get my first boat.
You couldn't buy much for $500,
even back in 1959. I was able to find a
13-foot Thompson Runabout with a 25-
horsepower Evinrude. If you've been
doing the math, you're probably wonder-
ing why I didn't have $600 to spend. My
father claimed that he only had to match
what I had left from my savings when it
was time to buy the boat.
At the time it sounded logical. My
father did, however, find free dockage for
me by knocking on doors along the river.
I have a lot of fond memories of boat-
ing on the Manasquan River. We drank a
lot of Schaefer beer or Budweiser when it
was a special occasion. As an added ben-
efit, the beer was free. Two of my best
friends worked at a local grocery and
liquor store. They would steal beer and
hide it in the trash area for later pickup.
It's hard to buy beer with a fake ID when
you are 14, so it saved a lot of hassles.
The following summer my posse and
I were down at the Glimmer Glass drink-
ing beer. The Glimmer Glass was a tribu-
tary of the Manasquan River, the real
beginning of the Intracoastal Waterway.
We "found" a new 45-horsepower
Mercury outboard there. My Fifth
Amendment rights prevent me giving any
more details.

As fate would have it, my Evinrude
died a week later so I needed a new
motor. The engine was black, Merc's
new color. To disguise it, we painted it
gray and red which were the colors of an
older 30-horsepower model.
A few weeks later, we were
relaunching my boat with the new Mere
at the same location where we "found" it.
A man approached us and asked whether
I was going to moor my boat here. "No,
why?" I asked.
He explained that a few weeks ago
some idiot had bought a new boat and
docked it there. "I told him it wasn't safe
but he didn't believe me," the man said.
"Sure enough, someone took his engine."
My response: "Sir, I'm glad you told
us dumb teenagers because I was thinking
of leaving it here. But now I know better."
We got out of there quick. Even
though my paint job fooled this guy, I
didn't want to press my luck. I sold the
boat at the end of the summer with the
original engine.
The next summer I bought another
boat. Richy, one of my posse, and I were
driving down Route 35 and spotted a
small runabout behind a marine store. It
was 12-foot and made of plywood. It
looked like a kit someone had made in
the backyard, but it had potential. The
asking price was $25 in cash. This was a
no brainer. We tied it on top of the car
and headed home.
I fiberglassed the hull, painted the
boat white and put the number 69 on
each side. I thought it was cool because
upside down it looked the same. We put
the Merc, which we had modified over
the winter, on the boat. For its day, it was
fast. And everyone thought it was the
fastest 30-horsepower boat around. But

Formalities help 'seal the deal' in boat owner,

it will go a long way in not only maintaining satisfied
clients and repeat business, but also will help prevent a
boat owner from "squelching" on a bill at the end of the
service.
In that regard, here are my suggestions to the yard
owner:
Offer the customer a well-written contract that
explains all parties' rights and responsibilities, and go
through the details with the customer, even the fine print.
This, of course, requires the yard owner to also understand
the contract (which should be a priority, anyway). Also, if
any modifications are made to the contract, or its under-
standing, put these in writing with as much detail as pos-
sible. This is for the protection of all parties and will help
prevent disputes.
Explain in writing to the boat owner, in as much

detail as possible, what you plan to do to the boat, how
long it might take and how much it will cost, making
allowances for any possible changes. (Personal note: It
Indeed, the concept of making
a deal verbally and sealing it

comes to work on a boat.
would be nice, once in a while, if actual time and costs for
boat work came out less than the estimates. It would prob-
ably reduce the fights I've seen by at least a quarter). Also,
don't assume any question by the owner is too dumb.
Explain in writing all warranties offered on work

that's our secret. We did something to the exhaust, which
made it very loud, so I named the boat Screaming Four.
How fast was it? I went out for a sea trial one after-
noon with Big John, my mechanic. I didn't have all the
controls installed, so I was holding the steering wheel in
one hand and the throttle in the other. We were gaining on
a 15-foot Glastron with a 75 Johnson. As I pulled around
to pass him, I caught his wake and Screaming Four went
up on its side.
The last thing I remember was seeing Big John falling
on me as I hit the water. When we came up for air the boat

was still right side up and was going around in circles. I
swam back to the boat about the same time as the Glastron
came over to see if we were still alive. The driver said it was
the neatest thing he ever saw. It's all in how you look at it.
What saved the boat was the fact that the throttle was
not hooked up. Otherwise, it would have continued on its
course at full speed. When I finally installed the throttle, I
attached an elastic cord so it would throttle down if I let go.
I may have invented the "kill switch" but didn't know it.

boatyard relationship
and products, or any lack thereof, before work begins.
Hopefully, by adding these formalities to the boat
owner and boatyard relationship, there will never be a
feeling that there was a "failure to communicate."
What's more, unlike the outcome in those old movies,
no one will end up "in the river" except maybe the boat
and hopefully it will be fixed and floating.

Couple's wanderlust took them up the Eastern Seaboard

Who's who among South Florida's boaters? Meet
the people working and enjoying the boating lifestyle in a
monthly feature that asks readers to share just what it is
that makes boating in Florida personal.
If you would like to tell your story, please e-mail
editor@waterfront-news.com. Include your name and
phone number where you can be reached during the day.
You can also fax 954-524-9464 or write to Boater's
Profile, The Waterfront News, 1515 SW First Ave., Fort
Lauderdale, FL, 33315.
Meet Jerome (Jerry), 81, and Myra Murray, 69, from
Aventura who share a mutual love for boating.
Jerry, a retired New York City attorney, had an office on
the 96th floor of the World Trade Center, Tower 2, where he
watched boats traverse both the East River and the Narrows.
He started boating at age 14 aboard a 15-foot wooden
sailboat that would hardly float because of its many leaks.
Today he holds a 100-ton Coast Guard masters captain license
with a sail endorsement.
Myra starting boating in 1989 and has loved every aspect
since. She recently achieved a 100-ton Coast Guard masters
captain license with a tow endorsement, after having a 50-ton.
She has also served as port captain, rear commodore, secretary,
commodore and now past commodore for the Eastern Shores
Aventura Yacht Club where she has belonged since 1990.
Today, the couple owns a 46-foot Grand Banks named
MY HONEY.
Where is it docked?
At a boat slip at our condominium, Plaza Del Prado.
Favorite local spots to go boating?
The Florida Keys
Whom do you take aboard your boat?
We take our daughter and any member of the Eastern
Shores Aventura Yacht Club.
After marrying in April 2006, we took MY HONEY on a
six month honeymoon trip from Florida, up the Intracoastal,
through the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware Bay, past the
Statue of Liberty, up the Hudson River, back into Long Island
Sound to Rhode Island, down to Montauk and the north shore
of Long Island, and back down the Intracoastal. We ended in
our homeport of Aventura.
If we liked an area, we stayed several days or even weeks.
Otherwise, we were off the next morning.

Jerry and Myra Murray (far left) with friends from the
Eastern Shores Aventura Yacht Club.
We've also boated through the Abacos and the Exumas as
well as the Florida Keys.
What's the one item that you can't live without on
your boat?
Well, MY HONEY is very well equipped with every con-
venience we have at home, but we would be hard put to do

without our Raymarine E-120 chart plotters.
Scariest experience on the water?
When I (Jerry) bought a boat in Puerto Rico to bring back
to the states, I was told not to worry about pirates and just go
the other way because everyone knew what a pirate looked
like: a patch over one eye, a wooden leg and a cutlass at the
waist. I managed to avoid all pirates but couldn't miss a hor-
rific squall, which was enlightening on the need for good sea-
manship and safety at sea.
What do you like least about boating in South
Florida?
Preparing MY HONEY for hurricane weather.
What do you like most?
Generally peaceful seas, many anchorages and wonder-
ful marinas. We have been blessed in finding a wonderful
engine and all around mechanic who has kept us "high and
dry" and "moving."
As told to Jennifer Heit
