Breast cancer survivors take on dragon boat race challenge

BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
It shouldn't be hard to spot the all-female team Save Our
Sisters. They'll be the ones hitting the waters at Haulover
Beach Park Marina in-Miami Beach with their newly pur-
chased pink paddles at the Miami Dragon Boat Festival.
The color pink is used to raise awareness about breast
cancer. But the equipment is more than mere decoration. It's
a particularly fitting symbol for the group, composed entirely
of breast cancer survivors.
The festival, on Oct. 13 and 14 on Miami Beach, will be
their second competition. The dragon boat racing team
formed last winter % ith about IS women from their 40s to 60s

"We are a support group, but on the.water," said
Bonomo, o\ nier of Cate 801, in Miami's Brickell Avenue
financial district.
Bonomo never expected to take up paddling until she was
approached by her neighbor and friend, Joan Gaines.
Gaines. a psychologist from Miami, said she and her son,
Au receiving a call from the Miami Dragon Boat Club.
The team's members are in different stages of their med-
ical treatments, said Bonomo, who was diagnosed two years
ago. Gaines was diagnosed 10 years ago.
Dragon boat racing teams of breast cancer survivors exist
around the world. The club wanted a crew to represent their
organization, Gaines said.
Representatives contacted Austin Gaines after reading
about his fundraising activities. At age 13, he established

Cancer Center.
It was a request they couldn't turn down. "We've always
been a boating family," said Gaines, who serves as SOS's co-
captain. "I love being on the water and it's something positive
I can do with other survivors."
Her son, a capital campaign coordinator at Camillus
House in Miami, is the team's drummer. His role is to lead the
paddlers through the race using rhythmic beating that helps
everyone keep their strokes in unison.

Most of Gaines prior experience had been on motor craft.
Learning to paddle was difficult, at first, she said.

Long running Columbus Regatta parts ways with Biscayne park

Fee hike, lack of sponsors force
annual race from park
BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
MIAMI Organizers of the Columbus Day Regatta are
bidding goodbye to Biscayne National Park.
An increase in permit fees and a lack of sponsors have
forced the group to hold their annual competition, scheduled
Oct. 6-7, outside the federal preserve's waters.
"Financial constraints have forced the committee to take
a different route," said Liz Gabay, regatta chairman. "It was
either move the race, or not have it at all."
Last year, committee members paid $3,000 to use the
park, which has long been part of the regatta's course. The fin-
ish line had been at Featherbed Bank, two to three miles north
of Elliot Key.
After being informed an additional $1,000 was being
tacked on for 2007, members decided to make a change by
ending the first day's leg at Blackledge, some five miles out-
side the park's boundaries.
They had little choice. Years of negative publicity
regarding mishaps and rowdy behavior over the weekend
by boaters not affiliated with the regatta, particularly those
anchoring over the holiday weekend in the park, had taken

its toll, Gabay said.
The final blow came last fall, when the event was associ-
ated in news reports with a fatal recreational boating accident.
"The incident occurred in Key Biscayne at night, far
from the park and hours following the finish of the race,"
Gabay said.
Committee members believe the media coverage
caused sponsors to pull out, and they haven't been able to
find replacements.
The permit fee accounted for a large chunk of the non-
profit group's budget. Without backers, it can't be done,
Gabay said.
The National Parks Service began imposing a fee in the
1990s to cover expenses: Previously, the committee had been
allowed to use the waters at no charge, according to commit-
tee members.
Committee members believe the new route won't affect
the race, which is entering its 53rd year. Little else has
changed for the competition, described as Florida's oldest
sporting event afloat, they said.
Organizers will have the traditional start, just south of the
Rickenbacker Causeway, and continue offering 13 classes
based on the vessel's size and crew experience. About 110

Maritime museum gets 'ideal' waterfront spot on the river

BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
FORT LAUDERDALE -With space already secured
for Fort Lauderdale's maritime museum, supporters are
gearing up for the next step of generating funding and vol-
unteers to get the project up and running.
Organizers are planning to host their first major event
in mid-November to shore up community \ % ide interest in-
the 6,500 square foot facility, facing the Nek Riter in the
city's historic Himmarshee district, said Jimmie Harrison,
who chairs museum's board of directors.
"The key is fundraising," said Harrison, owner of
Frank & Jimmie's Propellor Shop in Fort Lauderdale.
Although the museum is getting free rent through an
arrangement with the city and the property's developer,
the board is responsible for operating expenses. Early esti-
mates put the cost around $60,000 a year for maintenance,:
utilities and property taxes, Harrison said.
More monies are also needed to acquire exhibits and
outfit the space's bare interior \\ ith light fixtures, counters
and display units. Getting support is crucial to help pre-
pare the museum for its grand opening, which organizers

Stakes to help birds do their part to save delicate grass flats

BY-ARNOLD MARKOWrrZ
Waterfront NewsFishing Columnist
Thanks to the leadership and public spirit of cormorants,
Everglades National Park is doing something to restore the
Florida Bay grass flats that boat propellers have been tearing
up almost from the time small marine engines were invented.
For almost that long, entirely on their own, those diving
birds have been trying to make a positive impact on their habi-
tat but a lack of tools and organizational support enfeebled
their efforts. At last they're getting what they need to better
make their splash, so to speak.
They're getting bird stakes, a term so' obscure that one
might guess it refers to the odds on a pigeon race. But no, a bird
stake is a privy without privacy for birds, which are immodest.
Its use was inspired by the discovery that sea grasses tom
up by run-aground motorboats grow back pretty fast right
around channel markers. Why? Scientists figured it out.
"Cormorants and other birds roosting on them poop in
the water and fertilize the flats," Everglades natural resources
chief Craig Smith explained.
Bird stakes are pieces of PVC pipe, one end driven
into the sand and the other sticking up with a wooden
block on the top.
Smith said pains are being taken to give bird stakes their
own distinctive appearance, white with yellow markings, plus
signs that say it's a seagrass restoration zone, not a channel.
Everglades and a contractor, Tetra Tech of Boynton
Beach, are working now on three fields of bird stakes, 42
of them in all, to be stuck in the mud where grounded
boats have done the most damage on Cross Bank. That's a
flat about three miles long, as shown on marine charts,
running north from the inside coast of Plantation Key, just
south of Tavernier. Even at high tide, only a thin film of
water covers it.
"Aerial photos show that bank's much longer than indi-
cated.on the chart," Smith said.
All that might not be so bad if the Intracoastal Waterway
didn't cut through Cross Bank. It does, and even though the
route there is pretty well marked, boats tend to wander off-
channel into the park whose boundary is the Intracoastal
between Key Largo and Long Key, about 40 nautical miles as
the seagull flies.

There's a slight bend in the path and, on the west side of
Cross Bank, a sharp dogleg. Smith said the deeper waters
alongside the bank look significantly shallower in person than
the charted depths of two to five feet, so there's less room for
error than inattentive skippers might think.
Scarcely half a nautical mile east of that, the Tavemier
Creek channel forms a crossroads with the ICW, and another
mile and-a- half to the northeast is the second of two sharp
bends that the waterway takes around Pigeon Key.
Boater misjudgment in that stretch carves scars in Upper
Cross Bank, the site of what Craig Smith hopes will become
a bird stake project for volunteers to carry out. He said prelim-
inary talks are going on now with a nonprofit outfit. That proj-
ect probably will have to be submitted for approval by the
National Park Service at least at the regional level, if not in
Washington, Smith said.
"The government isn't very agile," Everglades super-
intendent Dan Kimball occasionally reminds us, and he
isn't the first federal executive to say it. He and his staff are
caught up now in the ponderous, complicated creation of a
general management plan that will guide how the park's to
be managed for the next 15 years after it's enacted.
Optimists say that could happen in as little as three more
years, only they're not offering to bet money on it.
Presumably, but not certainly, that plan should deal with the
problem of boat-grounding, grass-ripping and flats-scarring in
Florida Bay, which accounts for about a third of Everglades
National Park's territory.
The National Parks Conservation Association organ-
ized public workshop sessions in the first week of
September at Key Largo and Homestead. The idea was to
find ways for volunteers to do something .to help pretty
soon, rather than wait for the government to do all its
tedious i-dotting and t-crossing.
I met Smith at the Homestead session, where he told me
about the Cross Bank bird stake project, which he thought
would be finished by the end of October, and the hoped-for
volunteer project on Upper Cross Bank.:
Those projects aren't as simple as we may wish. Smith
told me the shallow prop scars can beleft to cormorants alone,
and volunteers can put up markers, but the deeper holes dug
in the flats by deep-draft boats have to be filled with sandbags.

Not just any old sand will do, Smith said:
"We have to do a sediment analysis to determine particle
size and carbonate content and organic content. There are labs
doing that. We work with the University of Florida."
Then the contractor has to order sand from its sources,
specifying the same contents already on the flats. It will be put
into biodegradable sacks, which will be put into boat-ground-
ing holes and slit to release the contents.
We who like to oversimplify complex concepts think it's
easy to protect grass flats from boating mistakes. We'd collect
used-up crab trap floats, donated paint, broken cement blocks
for anchors and donated rope. We'd take that stuff out in our
boats to mark off flats so boaters won't run aground, at least
not by mistake.
We can post people at the major points of access to
Florida Bay to make sure people launching boats know what
and what not to do how to spot channel markers, where to
pay extra attention, all the bad things that can happen if they
goof and run aground.
SWe can make presentations in middle and high schools so
kids will'grow up knowing you don't just take a motorboat out
and gun the engine anywhere you feel like it. We can organ-
ize safe boating courses customized for park waters.
The park staff already has volunteers marking some
small channels in Forida Bay with 4-by-4 posts and finger
signs where only thin sticks marked the way before. We can
volunteer to help with that, individually or with our fishing
and boating clubs.
Pretty soon, it's fair to hope, leaders in the National Parks
ConservationAssociation will sort out the most practical ideas
they've been given, work out details with Kimball and his
people and recruit the volunteers needed to get started.

Just a few hours to spare? Look close to home for fishing ops

BY ARNOLD MARKOWITZ
Waterfront News Fishing Columnist
R You don't have time to devote
a full day to fishing, do you?
Looking out the window and
across the street, you notice tree-
tops swaying and, far to the west,
a cloud more gray than white. The
weather forecast mentions a 40
percent chance of precipitation,
y more impressive than just plain
I rain.
Arnold Markowitz And hoo-boy, it's really hot
out there, so you stay home and watch videos of other
people fishing or you read about fishing not a total loss
if you're reading this piece instead of someone else's, but
stop right now and finish later.
Go fishing for the next three or four hours, if that's all
the time you have. There's pretty good action close to
home, so don't run your boat any further from the dock or
launch ramp than the nearest grass flat with nobody else
but birds fishing there. Start a drift across the, flat, casting
up current and retrieving just a bit slower to a bit faster
than the drift moves you.
Don't forget a net. You'll probably need it.
Almost anywhere on Florida's east coast, inshore
waters are protected from wind by the fairly short distance
between mainland and beach islands. There are canal net-
works running through waterfront communities, with fish
to be found around any dock, channel edge or grass flat.
Upland, the freshwater canals and suburban lakes har-
bor largemouth bass, peacocks, even saltwater species -
snook, tarpon, jack with high tolerance for low salini-
ty. I often fish for them from a canoe or, if I only have a
couple of hours, from public lands along the shores.
I made three such trips in the first two weeks of
September. One was half a day on Lake Ida, a. Delray
Beach spot that lovers of solitude find unbearable on
weekends and holidays. I fished it on a Tuesday with Alan
Zaremba, a guide who has added it to his territory because
it's a less annoying drive than the Miami-Dade waters he
usually frequents.

In the lake and two adjoining canals, we caught 15
peacocks Zaremba's specialty and half a dozen
largemouth bass. Zaremba, with chores to do that after-
noon, was home in Hollywood by 1:30 p.m.
On another September quickie, I fished offshore with
veterinarian Mike Fusco, who had to be home by mid-
afternoon. We had a promising beginning, catching plenty
of bait on Sabiki rigs at the Port of Miami.
The bait caught nothing in blue or green water. That
was on a Sunday, but we didn't have to deal with a mari-
na mob because Mike lives beside a canal, a block from
Biscayne Bay. Our only catch was a bonito on a lure, yet
we agreed it was better than any other way we.could have
spent our few hours.
1 write this thanks to inspiration from those old fishing'
buddies and new one Ed Wolfe, who's also good at mak-
ing the most of only a little time. Our latest trip, on a
Friday morning, lasted three hours because I needed to be
home by 2 p.m. We got plenty of action, all between
Miami and Key Biscayne.
We started our first drift on Ed's skiff near Mercy
Hospital in Miami. It's been known nearly forever as a
good spot for mangrove snapper and sea trout. We found
snapper pretty quickly in a triangle formed by the seawall,
a small dock and a drain pipe.
Right away, I caught a stout one on spinning tackle

baited with a pink Millie's Bucktail jig, an original one
made by the late Carl Garretson. I've glued doll eyes on
my small hoard of those because I think a lure with eyes
attracts more bites. Ed was casting flies, which the fish
followed and tapped but didn't bite.
A security guard driving a golf cart on the hospital
grounds stopped and gazed at us wistfully.
"Wanna go fishing?" Ed called out.
"I wish," the guard said. "I love fishing."
"We have an extra rod. Come on," I said.
"I wish," she said again.
A nautical mile-and-a-half to the east, along the
Rickenbacker Causeway, we stopped off Hobie Beach,
named unofficially for the Hobie Cat sailboats that are
ubiquitous there on weekend_ and holiday s '.\heh chances
of hooking a boat or a swinnmer are preir good.
On a Friday we didn't quite have the place to our-
selves. Just almost.
At low tide, boatless fishing-doers can wet-wade
within casting range of a row of can buoys stretching half
a nautical mile between the Miami Seaquarium's golden
dome and the opposite end of Hobie Beach.
The buoys are there to keep powerboats a safe dis-
tance off the bathing beach. They also make a convenient
set of markers for setting up and finishing a drift;
"Have you ever run this entire line of buo\ s to find
out where the best fishing is?" I asked Ed.
"Of course I have. That's why we're stopping at this

Speak

Nor a vessel

lender be

BY MARK ERCOLIN
Waterfront News Columnist .
"Neither a borrower nor a lender be"
warned the immortal bard Shakespeare,
"For a loan oft loses itself and friend..."
When it comes to actual cash, I've
observed that most people intuitively tend
to adhere to Shakespeare's sage advice. But
when it comes to other .valuable items,
potential lenders tend not to be as careful,
with boats being no exception.
Let's make it clear that we are dis-
cussing the loan and use of one', vessel
to a friend or acquaintance not an
actual charter and business arrangement
involving-contracts and legal counseling.
It-is this "friendly" arrangement that I'm
sure the great playwright would have
likely disapproved.
Think about it for a second. Few
among us would just hand over to even
our best friends a five or si\ figure bag of
money just to have the enjoyment of car-
rying it around for a day or two. Well,
that's pretty much what loaning a boat to
another person is like, except that the bag
of money is floating on the water and has
the risk of sinking.
Moreover, unlike a bag of cash where
the only loss will be the cash itself, when a.
borrower loses a boat it's likely there will
be other liabilities for the lender (think per-
sonal injury or collision damages, Such
liabilities can occur even if the borrower
didn't do harm to .the boat itself
"But wait!" you might gasp, "Isn't
that why someone has insurance on the
boat? Aren't there li\. s pre enting liabili-
ty from .attaching er10 the o,,ner %ho
loaned out the boat ."
Well, the answer is: "Possibly but
don't bet on it!"
First, let's look at the laws that might
come into play when a person loans a
boat to another: Regarding liability to

others, Florida Statute 327.32 considers
vessels a "dangerous instrumentality".
and states in part:
"All vessels, of whatever classifica-
tion, shall be considered dangerous instru-
mentalities in this state, and any operator of
a vessel shall, during any utilization of the
vessel, exercise the highest degree of care
in order to prevent injuries to others."
The statute further goes on to state that
liability for the actions of the operator will
not be imposed on the owner, providing the
owner was not on the vessel or present at
the time that any reckless or dangerous
actions took place.
But case law appears to paint a slight-
ly different picture if the owner loans his
boat to someone he knows could have
issues operating a boat such as a lack of
experience, poor physical or mental health,
use of drugs or alcohol all of which can
void the exculpation allowed to that owner
under Statute 327.32.
Now, under federal maritime law, a
vessel owner might be able to limit his lia-
bility when it comes to the .icions of oth-
ers. However for similar reasons :i-ied in
the above FloridLi scenario issues can be
raised to remove such limitations sought by
the owner.
Moreover, the time window for taking
advantage and filing with the federal courts
for any limitation. can be as line .is six
months following an incident.
While we're on their subject ofledcial
maritime law, it should ne\er be tifrgotten
that the vessel tell could be heldliable as
a defendant for-damages to others caused-
on or with the vessel allowing it to be
arrested and held-for-bond.-..-- .- -..
It should also be noted that marine pol-
lution laws have become quite draconian,
meaning there could be liability against a

Laws can hold boat owner liable for borrower's actions

vessel owner and the vessel itself should the boat
become involved in an incident that results in pollution. Laws
that might otherwise exculpate a non-involved owner will
usually not help if the boat becomes part of a pollution event.
Now that you have a small taste of what can result legal-
ly from loaning your boat to a friend, there remains the ques-
tion of whether you can insure against those possible liabili-
ties. Again, don't bet on it.

Right boat is far from perfect

After that, the projects take on less urgency. Due.to the
fact that it's had standing water in the cabin for who knows
how long, a great.deal of the interior wood and possibly the
bulkheads will need to be replaced. All new cushions are in
order since the current ones'are saturated with mold and
mildew, but the green and brown that are currently there are
ugly and I would have replaced them anyway.
The good news is the compressor for the icebox seems
to be in good shape, all the wood above the interior waterline
is pretty, there's plenty of space and acceptable storage.
So we've found the right boat for us, which, simply put,
is a boat we can enjoy working on together, dreaming on
together and when it's in shape, it will be more "ours" than
any boat we went out and bought ready to go. And I have no
doubt that we'll both come to think of it in affectionate terms
because when it comes right down to it, any boat is nothing
more than what you put into it and what it gives you in return.
I for one am willing to work for a good day on the water in
my boat.

A careful reading of noncommercial boat policies often
shows the stringent limitations on who, when or where some-
one other than the owner can use or operate the vessel.
Though an ambiguous clause can be challenged, it may not
be worth fighting an insurance policy due to the actions of a
friend (or likely a former friend by that time).
So the lesson is, should someone in your life want to
borrow your boat for the day, just say no and use the initial
Shakespeare quote on borrowing to cover yourself.
If they demand a better explanation, just blame it on the
litigious nature of the legal system .
After all, Shakespeare also said, "[K]ill the lawyers!"

Cautious pilot-turned-sailor avoids perilous trips

Who's who among South Florida's boaters? Meet
the people working and enjoying the boating lifestyle in a
monthly feature that asks readers to share just what it is
that makes boating in South Florida personal.
If you would like to tell your story, please e-mail
editor@waterfront-news.com. Use the words "Boater's
profile" in the subject line and include your name and
phone number where you can be reached during the day.
You can also fax 954-524-9464 or write to Boater's
Profile, The Waterfront News, 1515 SW First Ave., Fort
Lauderdale, FL, 33315.

captain and American Sailing Association certified sailing
instructor, from Plantation.

Where is it kept?
Citrus Isles area, Fort Lauderdale.
How long sailing or cruising:
20 years
Earliest experience on the water:
I began sailing with a friend on the Severn River and
Chesapeake Bay in the early 1980s when living in
Washington D.C. Later I moved to Dallas, Texas and while
on a business trip to Los Angeles, I had a chance to sail to
Catalina Island. I think it was this trip that peaked my inter-
est in sailing.
I returned to Dallas and found, much to m\ surpnse.
an active sailing community in the Dallas area. I oinoed
'he area's sailing club and did e\tensie chartenng
through the clubs sailing programs.
Where do you like to take iour boat?
I find the immediate Fort Lauderdale area pro% ides
ample opportunity tor t\\o- and three-da\ sails. Anchonng
in Lake Sil\ia. Lake Santa Barbra. ,or spending a niht iat

a local marina can provide an enjoyable weekend.
Trips to Miami and West Palm Beach can also be
made in a long weekend. If you can turn a fev days into
a couple of weeks, there is always the Bahamas and the
Florida Keys.
How far have you traveled on your boat?
My longest sail to date has been to Grand Caa man.
Other trips on my mind for the future include an Atlantic
crossing to the Mediterranean or a Panama Canal transit.
and then sail north to the lMeican Riviera.
Do you sail alone or with others?
Most of my sailing is with my friends in Sailing
Singles of South Florida where I have been a member
since 2003. Occasionally I have friends from my past life
visit and we will spend a few days on the boat.
How much of )our current life is spent aboard
iour boat?
Including time filng things. it is safe to sa\ a lot
\\hat draus )ou to boating?
In m\ career. I \as deeply\ involved in aviation and I
am a commercially rated pilot \ith se eral thousand hours
of flight time. Sailing is much like filing onl\ n m [o
dimensions I do find sailing less stressful than fltng..
although I must admit scaling is a lot more-work. -Ialso

like the social setting and the camaraderie among sailors.
Most memorable moments on the water?
Questions like this are always tough because there are
always so many memorable moments, so let me give. you
a couple: Anchored off the Pitons in St. Lucia watching
for the green. flash I won't lie we didn't see it.
Eating lobster at the Canadian Legion in Baddect,
Nova Scotia, while looking out the window at our
anchored sailboat. Lastly, but not least, taking my girl-
friend out for the first time on my boat.
Scariest moment on the water:
I can honestly say that I have never had a particularly har-
rowing experience on the water. I am a fairly conservative
sailor and usually spend quite a bit of time planning my sails.
In aviation there is a saying that there are old pilots
and there are bold pilot, but there are no old bold pilots. I
believe this also applies to the meantime environment and
sums up my approacil toward sailing.
What do you like the most about boating in South
Florida?
You can sail earg, round and there are a lot of great
sailing areas salablee'
What do you.least like?
That's an easy one: hurricanes of course.

Leaping, biting ladyfish known as the poor man's tarpon

one." (Lesson: cover every zone thoroughly, then move on
until you find fish).
A cormorant perched atop the can. If there were bait-
fish right, around it, the bird would be in the water with
them. I observed, but I tossed my bucktail oIer there'any-
way and a school of snall jacks chased it back to the boat.
There's usually something swimming around those buoys,
and that's hoi to find out what it is.
The tide was nearly high. A surface current, pushed
by a breeze from the southeast, carried us to the inshore
side. Ed backed the boat off, beginning another drift, and
we cast upcurrent. (Lesson: Almost always cast up cur-'
rent, sometimes crosscurrent, hardly ever down current)
That's where the ladyfish were, and they were biting,
and they were leaping, reminding us why they're known as
the poor man's tarpon. Most of them were 18-inchers, give
or take a centimeter, with big round eyesthat look more suit-
able for fish twice their size. Our biggest was a two-footer.
Judging by the swirls on the water surface, I'd guess some
of them were close to maximum, about three and a half feet.
I started with a sweeping whiplike retrieve and it
worked all right, but when I switched to a bouncy retrieve
- a shrimp's motion that worked better.
Ladyfish aren't very fit to eat, so I flattened the barb on
my jig. Pretty soon the fish knocked the eyes off. I replaced
it with another jig, tied with bright orange bucktail. That

doesn't look like any natural bait, but feeding competition
among ladyfish can get frantic, weakening their judgment.
I was reminded of a passage by the great New York
sportswriter Red Smith, a fly fisherman accustomed to
wading eastern trout streams. He fished once with a

Florida Keys guide who handed him a spinning rod rigged
with a Millie's Bucktail, a stranger to the journalist.
"Does a fish think this is something to eat?" he asked.
"Naw," said the guide, "but it's smaller'n he is and he
thinks he can whup it.

Breast cancer team finds competition empowering

Benefits include improving the immune system, bone build-
ing and helping rebuild areas of the chest and arms affected by
cancer and surgery, Gaines said.
Participation also provides an opportunity to form lasting
friendships and the ability to become role models.
"Many times, when women get the diagnosis,
they're devastated," Bonomo said. "By being out there,
we show them what the future holds once they get
through their treatment."
SOS won its first competition at a local festival in the
spring when the crew vied against three other teams from
Canada and Tampa in a division for breast cancer survivors.
But there are no similar races scheduled at Haulover where
SOS will enter one of the open divisions.
To.gear up, the team is continuing its regular practice ses-
sions two to three times a month at the Miami Rowing Club.
"When we get together, we focus on the exercise,"
Bonomo said. "We focus on the future, rather than our past.

The group wants to recruit more members. Age and drag-
on boat racing experience are not necessary. The only require-
ment is being a breast cancer survivor. Sponsors are also need-
ed to assist with expenses.
SOS's members also plan to walk dressed in their team's
pink T-shirts and carrying pink paddles at a fundraising walk,
Oct. 21. at Bayfront Park in Miami to benefit the Susan G.
Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Toni Anderson, a team member from West Park who
works as a corporate services associate for a commercial
real estate company, said her involvement has been
empowering.
"It's important to stay in shape and this is a fun way to do
it," Anderson said. "I view it as taking my life back. I wasn't
going to be limited."

Artist discovered in time for Columbus Day Regatta

BY BETH FEINSrEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
It sounds like a storybook character a
red-haired mermaid who paints.
But a series of events led to a fairy tale-
type ending for officials of the Columbus
Day Regarta when they selected AnnaMaria
Windisch Hunt, of Coconut Grove, as the
event's official artist for 2007.
Hunt goes by the nickname Mermaid
and signs her works with.images of the
mythical sea creature. Copies of her origi-
nal oil painting depicting sailboats on the
water now grace posters, brochures and
commemorative T-shirts promoting the
regatta's 53rd year. Some 100 entrants are
expected to take part in the two-day com-
petition, Oct. 6-7, on Biscayne Bay. r
Picking a work of art each year to rep-
resent the regatta is a tradition, said Susarn
Walcutt, treasurer for the race committee.

Hunt believes that too. "It was serendip-
ity," she said.
While working on the canvas, Hunt
never realized her image of a regatta on the
bay would one day be used to celebrate an
actual race taking place in the same.spot.
The work might have gone undiscovered
if Hunt had not added the sailboat oil to an
exhibit she had been asked to install centered

"I wasn't going to include it," she said.
"It just happened to be in' the car and I
brought it inside'.
While Hunt was preparing the show,
Walcutt walked in and spied the sailboat
piece leaning against a wall.
"It never occurred to me, she wanted
it for the regatta." Hunt said.
The Hungarian-bom artist said she drew
inspiration for the regatta painting from her
own love of sailing and life in South Florida.
Her husband, Fred Hunt, is an artist too, spe-
cializing in paintings of mermaids and
seascapes. The couple divides their time
between Coconut Grove and Woodstock, NY.
"Art has long been part of the regat-
ta," said Liz Gabay, who chairs the race
committee. "We've always illustrated our
brochures and posters with works by
local artists."
The work by Hunt is very fitting.
"It's beautiful, modem and visionary, "
Gabay said.
