Father, son to race against each other in tough Tybee

BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
When the Tybee 500 leaves Hollywood Beach, Jay and
Jared Sonnenklar will not only battle nature's elements on
the open waters. Father and son will also compete against
each other in the 500-plus mile catamaran sailing race.
"It's a lot more fun this way, to sail against each other,"
said Jay Sonnenklar of Davie, father of son Jared, 18.
They will both be among the teams participating in
the race's opening weekend, Friday, May 11 to Monday,
May 14, behind the Hollywood Beach Marriott at 2501 N.
Ocean Drive.
It will mark the second year that the pairhave been on
separate boats in the Tybee 500, which spans from
Hollywood to Tybee Island, Ga. The competition involves
18- and 20-foot catamarans manned by two-person teams.
Of the nine catamarans in the 2006 competition, Jay
Sonnenklar's team came in second. Jared placed fifth.
Father and son have been in previous catamaran races,
but the distances spanned from 50 to 100 miles. The Tybee
is the longest endurance sailing event that they have been
involved in together, said Jay Sonnenklar, who owns sever-
al auto repairs shops in Miami-Dade County.
Sonnenklar, who was born and raised in Hollywood,
began sailing catamarans at age 20 in neighboring Dania
Beach. He has been entering long distance races since
1993, including three Worrelf 1000 competitions. He also
competed in two prior Tybee 500 races, placing first in
2004 and third in 2003.
Sonnenklar began teaching his son how to sail the craft
at age four. Following in his father's footsteps, Jared
Sonnenklar began racing five years ago.
Jay Sonnenklar said there's nothing like being on a
catamaran. "The speed is what gets you hooked."
For the upcoming Tybee 500, father and son will be
members of the same Tiki Water Sports Team. Jay will sail
with Steve Lohmeyer, of the Florida Keys. Jared, who is
planning to attend either Florida State University or the
University of Florida in the fall, is teaming with Rod
Waterhouse, of Australia.
Laurel Sonnenklar will head the ground crews for
her husband and son and a third boat that Tiki Water

Sports is sponsoring.
"We call her the team mom," said Jay Sonnenklar.
The Tiki Water Sports Team has entered the Nacra Inter
20 class, reserved for 20-foot open vessels manufactured by
Performance Catamarans. The other class is Formula 18,
open to 18-foot catamarans from different manufacturers,
said Chuck Bargeron, race director.
Bargeron founded the Tybee 500 in 2002. The compe-
tition moved its starting point from Islamorada to
Hollywood in 2005, Bargeron said.
As of early April, about 15 catamarans had pre-regis-
tered for the 2007 event. Boats'are expected to start arriving
on Friday, May 11 at the Marriott resort. A meet and greet
with all the sailors will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, May
12 on the hotel's patio.
The first leg of the race, a round-trip loop from
Hollywood Beach to Biscayne Bay and back, will be held

at noon on Sunday, May 13.
The second leg, from Hollywood to Tybee Island,
launches at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 14. Along the route,
teams will have overnight stays in Jupiter, Cocoa Beach,
Daytona Beach and Fernandina Beach.
Bargeron has lived for 22 years on Tybee Island, where
he works as the island's chief code enforcement officer and
building official. He was previously involved as a race offi-
cial with the Worrell 1000, a more intense catamaran com-
petition that began in the 1970s, running from Virginia
Beach to Fort Lauderdale.
When the Worrell 1000 disbanded, Bargeron said he
began looking for a shorter version and devised the Tybee
500. "The unique thing about this race is that it leaves
from the beach," he said. "We line them up and it's a Le

Tradewinds Park now offers a boat ramp, Deerfield reopens

BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Another access point for boaters to launch their craft in
Broward County recently opened at Tradewinds Park in
Coconut Creek.
The launch site became available to the public on April 1.
Some 100 tons of white sand were laid down to create the
area, said Kevin Abbate, manager at Tradewinds.
Having the site marks the first time that people can bring
their own boats to the property's huge, fish-filled lake.Access
is limited, however. Only non-gasoline powered craft are
allowed.
The launch site at Tradewinds is one of several amenities
that boaters will find at Broward County-run parks. Deerfield
Island Park reopened in March, after being closed for a year
and-a-half due to damages caused by Hurricane Wilma.
Deerfield Island has a five slip marina for boats 26 feet
and smaller. The 55-acre island is just off Hillsboro Boulevard
on the Intracoastal Waterway. It is one of two county-operat-
ed parks accessible only by boat. The other is Boaters.Park in
Dania Beach.
Elsewhere in the county, boaters can launch vessels from
ramps at Markham Park in Sunrise, Quiet.Waters Park in
Deerfield Beach and West Lake Park in Hollywood. Dockage
is also available at the Anne Kolb Nature Center in
Hollywood.

Deerfield Island Park
reopened in March, after
being closed for a year
and-a-half due to damages
caused by Hurricane Wilma.

Park and Anne Kolb. Motorized boats can be launched at
Markham Park. West Lake and Quiet Waters permits launch-
ing of non-gas powered craft.
Inquiries from % isiLors led to the launch being installed at
Tradewinds. The lake, on, the park's southside, was previous-
ly used only by people renting the park's fleet of canoes, pad-
dleboats, johnboats and kayaks.
"It was under utilized," Abbate said.
These days, when he looks out from his office, the view
has changed. 'There's more activity," he said. "There's been a
steady flow of boats. We've gotten many repeat users."
Some bring kayaks and canoes. But the site seems most
popular with fishing enthusiasts. "Someone caught a 6-pound
bass the other day."
Although there is no charge to use the area, boaters must

follow several rules including restrictions that forbid trailers to
be parked on the beach. Waivers, available at the park's office,
must also be obtained before going out on the water.
Other requirements are that all operators and passengers
must wear U.S. Coast Guard-approed life vests and that no
pets are allowed on the boats. All passengers ages 17 and
under must also be accompanied by an adult, Abbate said.
The new sandy white beach has also made it easier for
people renting boats from the park. Previously, craft had to be
launched from either a floating dock, or a grassy slope.
"This has made it easier for everyone," Abbate said.
When creating the launch site, workers installed two 16-
foot wide umbrellas for shade. Plans are to add a picnic area
and seats within the next few months, Abbate said.

Seatrout made simple: Here's some new tricks to try

B1 ARNOLD MARKOWITZ
.\ ale tr.n nt News Fishing Columnist
Jerry the fisherman, better
kno\,, n as Jerry the plumber, rang
the doorbell and before the dog
stopped barking, we knew this visit
w an't about the pipes.
Through the front door's dis-
ioiied window glass, I recognized
the object in Jerry's hefty hand: A
A cone-shaped chunk of white plastic
t tfo.rn penetrated by a green plastic
Arnold Markowitz stick down the middle, cupped at
the wide end and striped in green and red.
It's the ubiquitous 99-cent popping "cork," still pop-
ular as a seatrout attractor in the era of gaudier, more
complex devices, $2.49 and up, that go clickety clack
when twitched.
The sound is meant to mimic a fleeing shrimp. A real
one on a hook is supposed to be suspended below it, just
deep enough to skim the undulant grass tips on a bay flat.
Seatrout lurking in the grass are supposed to hear the sound,
notice the real shrimp just overhead and swim up to eat it.
(A fish mother: "Watch out for bones!")
"Listen," Jerry said, shaking his popping imitation cork.
Clackety click it rattled, or maybe yakkety yak, obscured in
translation but noisy for sure. The costlier rig's selling point
is sound, made by brass and plastic beads on a wire stem to
mimic the sound of a shrimp in a hurry.
"Worm rattles," Jerry said, shaking again. "Look."
He pointed to a putty-plugged vertical hole in the top of
the imitation cork, near the edge. You know what worm rat-
tles are? Little glass or plastic cylinders with a few little BBs
inside and little points on the end. They're meant to add a bit
of commotion to a plastic bass worm.
"Just push a couple of worm rattles in and plug it," he
said with another shake of his makeshift maraca. Chick chic-
ka-chick, chicka-chick. It made me want to dance not that
I'm so rhythmic, but I'm a sucker for improvisation.
Even better, it feels good to know that somebody
reads these essays in Jerry's case, the month of
March's wild-eyed diatribe about popping-cork fishing
with live bait for seatrout.

All the news that fits we print, and I had to end that col-
umn with leftovers in the pan.
A shame to throw it out, you know, and the trout bite
should still be good in May, so here is a collection of sharp
pointers froin experts.

1 L I'-

i ; Photo/ARNOLD MARKOWITZ
S When choosing a circle hook
S for live bait, size differences
11. between brands can be perplexing.
There's no standardization from
one brand to another, as these hooks
~.C '.;'- by Mustad (left) and Eagle Claw
illustrate. If you usually use a size
._ .- 2/0 J hook for seatrout, your circle
-7:' J o- hook should be a 3/0, approximately
. 1'|; -" ,-;.^ "*' matching the J hook's gap between
S- shank and point. In this case the
Eagle Claw 3/0, with its wider gap
and longer shank, is the better choice.

Hooked on tricks
I was fishing near Everglades City with Bob Hustead.
He was catching trout the old-fashioned way with his
Styrofoam bobber, long leader and J hook. I was catching far
less with the $2.49er, not-that-long leader and a circle hook.
We fished opposite sides of his boat, swapping positions now

The unique American

fishing fleet

BY MARK ERCOLIN
Waterfront News Columnist
In the early 1980s Ronald Reagan
declared that a 200-mile Exclusive
Economic Zone, EEZ for short, existed off
the U.S. coast.
One of the main purposes was to set
aside a confirmed portion of the ocean for
the economic exploitation of the sovereign
nation on which those seas abut.
Cynically, many thought at the time
that Reagan's primary aim was to stop
Soviet spy ships posing as fishing boats
from monitoring our military. However, the
declaration also set aside a wide part of the
ocean for exclusive use by U.S. commercial
fishing boats.
Within this EEZ, only U.S. fishing ves-
sels may catch fish commercially without
appreciable interference. Arguably, this
helps conserve fishing resources and pro-
tects those resources for the homegrown
fishing industry.
The federal government also enacted
other laws to protect the economic exclusiv-
ity of this industry. Again in the 1980s,
Congress passed the Anti-Reflagging Act
and the American Fisheries Act, mandating
that vessels licensed for fishing must be free
of significant foreign ownership or control.
Moreover, vessels licensed in the fish-
eries trade for use in the EEZ must be U.S.-
built, with U.S. captains and officers and
other crewmembers being either U.S. citi-
zens or lawfully admitted permanent aliens
(with only 25 percent of unlicensed seamen
considered in this alien category).
These congressional licensing and
statutory schemes together with executive
declarations, created what might be consid-
ered a uniquely American fishing fleet with
exclusive access to American waters for/the
economic benefit of Americans.
Yet, some would say that not enough
has been done to protect this national fish-

ing fleet.
Even to the casual observer, there are
noticeably fewer local commercial fishing
boats than there were a few years ago.
Indeed, it might surprise many to hear that
until the end of the 1970s, Coconut Grove
had an active shrimping fleet docked at the
marina that now houses Monty Trainer's.
Certainly, there are numerous factors to
consider regarding the declining U.S. fish-
ing industry. Fishing is statistically among
the world's most dangerous professions,
and many would-be fishermen prefer safer
employment.
Also, fishing stocks appear to be get-
ting smaller, thought in part to be due not
only to environmental factors, but a failure
to enforce the EEZ from foreign fishing
vessels. And the costs of preparing a fishing
boat for safe and profitable operations also
contribute to the industry's weakening.
But there's a more pressing reason
similar in nature to why there's fewer medi-
um sized vessels lack of dock space and
an inability to find facilities to expeditious-
ly package their wares.
The irony is that the very government
and people who rely on fresh fish for their
shoreside living and who advocated
those statutes and declarations that estab-
lished an American fishing fleet are now
assisting in its decline. This is partly due to
the economics of the elimination of dock-
age for more lucrative activities, and the
elimination of fishing boat facilities in the
name of security. The security issue is par-
ticularly ironic.
You see, as fishing boat facilities have
become scarce in other venues, many of the
fleets in Florida have been leasing space in
major ports. But port access is becoming far
more restricted to the American fishing
boat, despite the deference, at the same

Our inner pirat

BY AMYTHURMAN
Waterfront News Columnist
I was invited to attend the annual
Captain and Crew Appreciation Party at
Sunrise Marina recently, hosted, incidental-
ly, by the company I work for. This year's
gala had a pirate theme. I knew the staff
would attend in costume, and I figured
there would be a few scurvy dogs to show
in full pirate regalia.
We're all boaters after all, whether we
play on a 30-foot boat or crew on a 130-
foot mega-yacht. But I have to say, I was
surprised at the pirate turnout. Of the 1,000-
plus in attendance, I would easily say more
than a third were in pirate gear.
So why do we have this strange roman-
tic obsession with pirates? I don't think it's
much different really from those modem-
day cowboys who idolize Jessie James or
Billy the Kidd. Or the people who get a
charge out of old stories about Al Capone
and the rest of the Mafioso who had their
heydays in the 1930s and '40s. Some might
say the one thing each of these subcultures
share is their criminal element.
So what does this mean? Do we all
really want to be criminals at heart? No, I
don't think so. I don't know a single "cow-
boy" these days who has any sympathy for
a cattle thief or bank robber. Nor do I know
anyone who finds racketeering, blackmail
or murder acceptable. And I certainly don't
know a single boater who condones mod-
em piracy.
Yet we adore the legends. We must.
Tell me one other notion that will persuade
a heterosexual adult male to put on tight
pants and ruffles and appear in public?
As boaters, we do love our pirates.
We have pirate flags and actually fly
them. We attend pirate parties in costume
and we adore pirate movies. We love
Jimmy Buffet and others like him who
sing pirate ballads. We say "AARGH!"

with little or no provocation.
When we visit places with pirate
museums, we're the first ones in line. We
love those places with pirate histories
like Nassau, Kingston and Okracoke. We
love the legends and most of us can name
a few famous pirates and spout off about
their exploits.
I'm no different. I have a pirate flag or
three, a collection of pirate books and
movies and I'm eagerly awaiting the
release of "Pirates of the Caribbean II." I
own pirate bandanas and head scarves, an
eye patch or three, big hoop earrings and
other, gaudy jewelry and clothing I break
out when there's a pirate party to attend.
In fact, I've hosted pirate parties. It
gets worse in my case though. I'm 80 per-
cent done with writing a novel about Anne
Bonny, one of the most notorious female
pirates. And of course, by telling you all
this, I have to finish it or risk-looking like a
flake who never gets anything published.
I've done extensive research. If you want to
know anything about any pirate who sailed
the Caribbean between 1716 and 1721, just
ask me. How scary is that?
The only thing that makes me feel bet-
ter about my fascination is knowing I'm
not alone. You're all nearly as bad or worse
than me! And why is that?
I like to think it isn't the criminal ele-
ment so much as the lure of the freedom
found on the open ocean. Pirates made
their own rules and for the most part stuck
to them. They had their own code of
honor and justice and some consider them
to be one of the only "societies" to live in
a true democracy.
A great many of them only attacked
ships flying the flags of their own country's
enemies. Yes, there were rogues; there are
in every group of more than three people.

Love of sea nurtures the pirate in all of us

1 :11I1111;Mll[ Ailialill il]
In many cases, these men and women were forced into
their lifestyles by the very times they lived in. I'm not
attempting to justify crime, although none of us is always
beyond reproach in all of our actions. But I do believe the
thing we love most about the pirates of old is the shared
understanding that there's a certain peace in being out there
at sea with no one to answer to but your captain and the wind.
Even today.
It's part of our heritage, if you think about it.
Granted, I've been accused on occasion of being able to
rationalize anything, but in this case, I don't believe it's

mere rationalization.
About 300 years ago, give or take a decade or three, they
sailed the same waters we sail today. They loved being out
there on their ships the same way we do now. They endeav-
ored to understand the tides, the weather and the wind, as do
we. They found their peace in the simplicity of standing on
deck surrounded by a vastness that puts every other aspect of
life into perspective.
Am I a pirate? AARGH. And you can bet your skull and
crossbones you are too!

time, to foreign-flagged, foreign-crewed, and often foreign-
managed cruise ships. Even more ironic, these cruise ships are
traveling to foreign locations, as opposed to local fishing boats
which generally remain in U.S. waters and never touch for-
eign shores.
One result of this decline of facilities for fishing boats is
not only less fresh fish for American tables and restaurants.
Foreign caught products benefit local markets even less.

Wrong. And incredibly wrong for a boating pubcba-
ton. If her kaiak is capsized b\ the \%ake of a passing
vessel, or b. collision with a vessel, she and her PFD.
like fools and their money. .ill soon be parted.

SSadly, for the sake of security, in order to preserve the
American way"of life, we may lose exactly that the
American way of life and the American fishing fleet.
Whether the American fishing fleet survives remains in
question. In the meantime, you may want to adjust to eating
more steak.

Trout expert: Reel should have a nice, smooth drag

M MI;Yl|li{ATl lW
and then. With annoying consistency, the bite
was better on whatever side was Bob's. If his
bites weren't more numerous, his fish were
bigger.
I wondered how he knew which side the
fish were on.
"I think the portly fish are on the port
side," he said, and I wrote that down. I also
wrote down his advice for free-lining
shrimp: If you hook the bait under the horn
- that ridge atop the head clip its wings,
those little forward fins. If you hook it in the
back, clip off its tail flukes.
"That'll keep your line from twisting
when you retrieve," Bob said. I tried it. He's
right. When a fish pulls his bobber under
water, Bob counts to three, not fast, before he
sets the hook. I count to five to let my circle
hook turn and snag the comer of the fish's
mouth. Next time out, I'll try a six-count.
Alan Sherman, a guide who specializes
in northern Biscayne Bay, has these hook-
ing tricks:
"If you hook bait in the lips, it'll swim
on the surface and seagulls will get it first.
Hook it at the throat and it's going down.
Don't set the hook so quickly, especially
with a circle hook."
This bunch prefers spinning tackle for
trout. It gives you decent distance without a
brute-force cast. The rods are lighter and
flexier than stouter, heavier bait-casting
sticks. A seatrout's mouth tissue tears easily,
so a soft-tipped spinning rod is less likely to
damage a fish that has to be released.

Minimum legal size is 15 inches.
Mike Hakala, a trout expert who guides
at New Smyrna Beach, spoke about circle
hooks and seatrout at a seminar I attended.
His ideas are good. I just found the notes,
beginning with Hakala's fondness for spin-
ning tackle.
"I find it much easier to cast lighter lures
and.lighter bait (1/4 to 3/8 oz). Fifty to 60
feet is the distance you're looking for."
He uses two rods, one with a fast tip for
casting lighter lures. "The tip does all the
work for me and this rod has enough back-
bone that it can handle larger fish."
Hakala's other rod is a little stiffer and
heavier for tossing plugs, weighted jigs,
spoons and surface lures. It's good for
snook, too.
"The most important thing in a reel is
that it should have a nice, smooth drag. If the
line doesn't come off smoothly, it'll break."
That's a good starting point. if you're
shopping for a reel, no matter what fish
you're after. Most of us heft a reel in our
hands, give the crank handle some spins and
if it feels okay, we go for it.
We should bring a spool of line to the
tackle shop, tie it on the reel, wind it up and
ask the other guy inspecting reels to act as a
fish and swim away against the drag. If it's
not herky-jerky, it'll do. That's just a test.
Don't let a fish do it or your line will twist up
something fierce. Either tighten the drag
enough to stop a run or let her swim with the
reel in free-spool mode with thumb tension
on the spool.

I f you already own the rod that the reel's
meant for, bring it to the store, put the reel on
and try a few false casts. Watch out for peo-
ple's eyeballs. We're after balance here. If
everything else is nearly equal, choose the
reel that weighs the least.
Does any manufacturer still make a
spinning reel whose bail closes only when
you turn the handle? If so, I wouldn't have it.
Consistently doing it on automatic lays a turn
of line on the spool a bit loosely. Loops are
wound in and will tangle you up something
fierce. Alan Zaremba, the peacock guide,
coaches his clients to close the bail by hand.
It feels peculiar for a while. Now my hand
does it without conscious direction.
Okay, shopping spree's over. Back to
fishing.

Simple choices
Hakala said he switched from monofila-
ment line to braid, "because it doesn't
stretch; it's more sensitive so you can feel
any bump on the end of your line. The small-
er diameter lets you cast a little bit farther"
If braid's higher price makes you flinch,
you can get a lot out of a bulk spool by fill-
ing the reel halfway with monofilament and
the rest of the way with braid. Because
braid's so much thinner than mono, consider
doubling the braid before tying on the leader.

If the braid's 10-pound test and the leader's
20, Iroutinely double the braid. Hakala does-
n't. If the ration is 10-pound to 30, he does.
He doubles with a Bimini twist, a
showoff's knot. I like the simpler Spider
twist devised by Spider Andresen.
Here's what Hakala says about circle
hooks:
"One, since they're curved they're more
snagproof. They don't catch bottom as regu-
larly as a J hook. Two, they set themselves.
When you feel a strike, just point your rod at
the fish and bring your line tight...
"I find if you have a lush grass flat, all
grass, it's not as good to fish. You want to
look for flats with big sand spots on them.
We call them pot holes. You want to cast
along the edges with a live shrimp rigged
through the tail. I pinch that tailfin off right
at the base and put the circle hook from the
bottom up through the 'ilttjbir4t l' having
the tail on tends to make the shrimp spin."
Choose a circle hook one size larger
than the J hook you'd use otherwise, in order
to roughly match the gaps between barb and
shank. You'll need to do it by eyeball
because there's little to no consistency in size
designations.
Next time I see Jerry the plumber, I'm
going to suggest he take on that problem. I'd
bet on him to solve it and make it simple.

owned a 35-foot Alberg, S/V Saga, and is considering buying
another boat.
Where was your boat kept?
We sold her just a week before Hurricane Wilma!
Whew!
How long have you been boating?
40 years.
IEarliegt experiences on the water
My uncle George taught me how to sail and used to
take me out on his Columbia 29, and then his Ericson 36
out of the Maryland Yacht Club in the Chesapeake Bay.
We often raced and other times had family outings, which
often ended up with us running aground. You know what
they say about Chesapeake Bay sailors? There are two
kinds: Those who are aground and those who are about to
run aground.
Where do you like to cruise?
Central America and Panama, especially the San Blas
Islands.
How far have you taken your boat?
From San Francisco Bay to South Florida, through the
[Panama] Canal.
Companions on the water?
My partner Capt. James "Jann" E. Hedrick. He's a local
delivery captain.
How much of your current life is spent aboard your
boat?

Nancy Birnbaum, 49, from
Pompano Beach, with her partner,
Capt. James "Jann" E. Hedrick.

-IrI

Up until we arrived here a couple of years ago, it was
five years 24/7, but we are currently between boats. We
sail on whatever we can. get out on as often as we can. My
mate, Jann, has been offering his skills to new members of
Seven Seas Cruising Association who have just bought their
boats here, and has been helping them "learn the ropes," as
they say.
We often trade day sails for coaching help. The two of us
did a delivery recently on a Fontaine Pajot 43-foot Bahia
from Cancun to Fort Lauderdale. We're trying to get on more
cats before we purchase one.
What draws you to boating?
We are both world travelers for most of our lives who
love the water and consider ourselves quite self-sufficient, (a
perfect combination for cruisers). We love the freedom and
access cruising gives us to other cultures, peoples and places.

And we always abide by the Clean Wake Policy of the Seven
Seas Cruising Association.
Describe a memorable boating experience
There are so many, it's hard to choose. But one that stands
out took place on Isla Partida near La Paz, Baja, Mexico. We
got a group of seven boats of new friends and celebrated the
millennium New Year with a potluck on the beach. We had the
entire island to ourselves and it was marvelous!
Scariest moment on the water
Don't let them fool you the Pacific is anything but!
We saw 60-plus knots and 16- to 20-foot seas coming down
the west coast. Fortunately, they were following seas, with
the occasional cross swell that often pooped Saga and made
for a very long, wet night. Jann had to hand-steer, with a
tiller, for 18 hours straight! I called out the wave sets and
gave moral support, and slept between sets!
What do you like most about South Florida boating?
The weather!
What do you least like?
There's almost nowhere left around here for the little
guys, like us live-aboards!
