When the Ocean Research & Conservation Association
was founded last year, Keith Paglen was preparing a long
term plan to gain worldwide recognition for the nonprofit
organization in Fort Pierce.
Paglen, the group's chief executive officer, said he
expected achieving the goal would take five to 10 years. But
the associationhas now been placed on the fast track, due to
a $500,000 grant from the John D. and Catherine T.
MacArthur Foundation given last month to the association's
president and senior scientist, Edith Widder.
The funding will be awarded to Widder over a 5-year
period for continuing work in designing and engineering
water quality monitoring systems.
"This award has definitely given us a leg up," said
Paglen, who co-founded the Ocean Research &
Conservation Association with Widder.
The announcement has resulted in a flurry of phone
calls from media outlets throughout the United States, as well
as inquiries from people wanting to learn more about the
group, Paglen said.
Widder, a deep-sea explorer, is one of 25 recipients from
such diverse fields as medicine, music and art who were
named MacArthur Fellows for 2006. The annual program,
more popularly known as "genius grants," honors people
who have shown exceptional originality and creativity.
Designing new technologies has already made Widder a
pioneer in bioluminescence, which is the light produced by
undersea life, Paglen said.
"The instruments make it possible to monitor and doc-
ument the bioluminescence in the ocean," he said. "A sig-

When newscasters began tracking Hurricane Emesto,
many South Floridians went into storm mode including lots
of boaters.
"No one was ignoring the warnings this year, that's for
sure," said Frank Herhold, executive director of the Marine
Industries Association of South Florida.
The recent spate of past hurricanes hitting the area,
including the double whammy of Katrina and Wilma in
2005, seems to have had a profound effect on recreational
boaters, say observers in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm
Beach counties.
Although Emesto's arrival in late August fizzled and
turned into a drizzle, a significant number of boat owners
took action when they heard the storm was approaching by
participating in Broward County's flotilla plan, where they
were escorted up the New River by the Broward Sheriff's
Office Marine Unit to more secure areas, Herhold said.
Boat owners along the Miami River and in Palm Beach
County weren't taking any chances either.
"When there was a possibility we might have a big storm
[with Emesto], boats were coming up the Miami River days
in advance, to their reserved slips," said Fran Bohnsack,
executive director of the Miami River Marine Group, a pri-
vate port cooperative. "It's a good sign."
George Carter, treasurer of the Marine Industries
Association of Palm Beach County and director of the
Riveria Beach Municipal Marina, said he believes experi-

nificant percentage of the majority of life in the oceans
produces bioluminescence. It's an extremely important
subject to understand."
Because the sensors developed by Widder can also be
used for water quality, the instrumentation can be a critical
tool that will allow people to make more informed decisions,
Paglen said.
"I think this is an extraordinaryrecognition of her vision
and concern for marine ecology," Paglen said. "We're
extremely excited about it."
News of the MacArthur grant has also generated
excitement at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution,
another nonprofit organization in Fort Pierce that is collab-
orating on several projects with the Ocean Research &
Conservation Association.
In a statement released by Shirley Pomponi, president of
Harbor Branch, she said the institute is "proud of the recog-
nition [Widder] has received for her current and prior scien-
tific accomplishments, and for the freedom this funding will
provide Edie to pursue new avenues of research in support of
ocean conservation."
Widder, an affiliate professor at Florida Atlantic
University's Department of Biological Sciences, has
brought greater visibility to the university, where gradu-
ate students are involved with the Ocean Research &
Conservation Association, said Jeanette Wyneken, asso-
ciate professor of biological sciences at FAU's Boca
Raton campus.
"Edie is an amazing biologist and scientist,"
Wyneken said. "She is creating equipment others can take
advantage of and adapt for their specific needs. The
potential is huge, worldwide."

ences from past storm seasons have served to pull the boat-
ing community closer together.
"Wilma really shook everyone up," Carter said. "You
can see a difference in the marine community. In my marina,
people are going out of their way to help each other."
For Ernesto, 70 boats left the city's 150-slip marina for
safer waters. Many left flotilla-style, together, Carter said.
Among those who stayed, Carter said he saw such acts
as experienced boaters helping novices tie lines. "The year
before, it was every man for himself," he said.
Mike Kalkstein, assistant dockmaster at the Lighthouse
Point Yacht & Racquet Club in Lighthouse Point, said boat
owners at the 80-slip marina must sign an agreement stating
they have insurance and will either secure their vessels or
move the craft to safer \ waters in the e ent of a hurricane.
For Ernesto, 99 percent chose to stay put at the facility,
which can accommodate boats up to 100 feet, Kalkstein said.
"Everyone came, or had a representative, secure their
boats with additional ropes and fenders," he said.
Other precautions were taken too. "Last year, many
boaters lost their canvas tops with Wilma and it was quite
pricey," Kalkstein said. "People didn't think the storm would
hit that far north. Half of the boats lost canvas tops. I think,
this year, more boaters did not want to repeat that expense."
With the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season ending on Nov.
30, officials say they are very pleased so far with the emer-
gency plans that have been in place.

Riverwalk statue honors military who fought at sea

BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
FORT LAUDERDALE The latest addition to Fort
Lauderdale's Riverwalk is a 7-foot tall tribute to the men and
women serving at sea in the U.S. Armed Forces and the U.S.-
Flag Merchant Marine.
The bronze statue, called the "Lone Sailor," was erected
in mid-September and stands watch around the clock from its
permanent post in Esplanade Park. An official dedication cer-
emony will be held at 10 a.m. on Oct. 14.
The event is expected to draw elected leaders, veterans
organizations, civic groups and student organizations such as
ROTC and the Sea Cadets to the Lone Sailor site, at 400 NW
Second St.
The official unveiling of the statue will mark the comple-
tion of a 4-year project that was undertaken by the Navy
League of the United States Fort Lauderdale Council, which
raised $250,000 to commission the statue and have it installed
at the park.
"I'm very proud to be part of it," said Nick DiNunzio of
Pompano Beach, a past council president who co-chairs the
statue committee with fellow member George Wortley of
Fort Lauderdale.
The statue expresses appreciation for all members -
past, present and future who put their lives at stake to pro-
tect freedom while in sea service with the U.S. Navy, Marine

Corps, Coast Guard and U.S.-Flag Merchant Marine,
DiNunzio said.
The park was selected as the statue's home because it will
allow the statue to be viewed by the greatest number of people.
The site is easily seen by pedestrians and boaters alike.
The Lone Sailor also honors the families of those who
served and DiNunzio said he expects many people seeing the
statue will experience a personal connection
"It's rather moving," said DiNunzio, a U.S. Army ser-
geant who served during the Korean War and has been a
member of the Navy League's Fort Lauderdale Council
since 1997. "My brother, Joseph, who passed on in 1999,
was in the navy during World War II. The statue, to me, rep-
resents his service."

Dolph Du Mont, another council member and U.S. Navy
veteran who served as a seaman during World War II, said the
recognition that the Lone Sailor represents is important.
And the work is attractive too, said Du Mont, who is co-
chairing the dedication ceremony with his wife, Patricia.
The statue at Riverwalk is one of eight Lone Sailors stat-
ues created by sculptor Stanley Bleifeld that has been erected
by U.S. Navy Leagues around the country. Other sites are in
Washington, D.C.; Norfolk, Va.; Great Lakes, Ill.; West
Haven, Conn. and Kirkland, Wash. Two more statues are in
San Diego and San Francisco.
Each statue contains two pieces. The sailor weighs 1,000
pounds. A sea bag and cleat weigh a combined 700 pounds.
As part of the casting process, the bronze for the Lone
Sailor was mixed with artifacts from eight U.S. Navy ships
provided by the Naval Historical Center, at the Washington
Navy Yard, according to the U.S. Navy League.
"It's a patriotic recognition to veterans and current serv-
ice men and women and to our future service men and
women," DiNunzio said.
Fort Lauderdale is an appropriate place for the statue,
being a favored port of the U.S. Navy, he said. "They were
always entertained when they came here."
Raising funds for the project has been a real community
wide effort. Major donors include the Huizenga Families
Foundation, the Seminole Tribe of Florida, the Miami Herald
and the James B. Pirtle Construction Company.
For more information on the Lone Sailor and the official
dedication ceremony, call 954-524-7228, or visit

Local record setter catcheslion-sized catfish in Thailand

U

BY ARNOLD MARKOWITZ
Waterfront News Fishing Writer
How far would you travel for catfish?
To Yeehaw Junction? No?
Across the street? No?
How about Thailand? That's where the big ones are.
Coral Gables fisherman Martin Arostegui and his
son Martini went there in July for giant Mekong catfish
and caught them the son a 78-pounder on spinning
tackle with a ball of bread for bait, the father a 35-
pounder on a fly.
Yes, a fly. What sort of fly would you devise for such
a fish whose customary forage is water-bottom vegetation?
"They'll only eat bread, so to catch them on fly you
have to match the hatch," Martin Arostegui said.
Using tan marabou feathers the color of bread crust,
he devised a rough copy of the bread ball usually used
for bait.
"It's about the size of a tennis ball," he said. "They
wet the bread with coconut milk and squish it real good
and mold it into a ball with a coiled spring inside and a
small piece of leader six inches long and a hook buried in
the bread ball. The spring holds it all together."
Arostegui's gluten-free imitation slightly resembles a
flesh fly, used as a salmon lure in the Pacific Northwest.
Using a 12-weight rod, with the heft often chosen for
shark fishing, he put a strike indicator about six feet up the
line, boosted the thing over the side of the boat, let it sink
and chummed around it with chunks of real bread.
T...That's far from typical sporting technique for
Arostegui, who has set 190 world records following the
International Game Fish Association's strict criteria, but
the giant cat isn't classified a game fish by the IGFA, so
he could go offbeat with a clear conscience.
The catfishing took place on Bung Sam Lan, a pri-
vately owned lake near Bangkok. ith the assistance of
Jean-Francois Helias, a famous French guide specializing
in Southeast Asia.

The man under the hat is Martin Arostegui and the fish
under his chin is a barramundi, caught in Thailand. This
one weighed 18.63 pounds. It bit on a purple streamer
and fought like a Florida snook.
In this country it might be hard to find a professional
catfish guide, even for big ones. People who want those
set lines baited with chicken entrails in muddy rivers, tie
off to a stick and come back a day or two later to see
what's on their hooks. That's pretty casual fishing.
Not so in Asia, where giant catfish are said to impart
wisdom to those who consume them. At least that is what
tourists are told.
If it's true, and if we eat enough catfish (the bigger
the better), we might become wise enough to hoard them
in private lakes where sportsmen like the Arosteguis may
catch but must release them.
Doesn't it follow logically that whoever controls cat-
fish will control wisdom and therefore control the world?
That is not the official excuse for controlling catfish in
Thailand. Nobler reasons are given.
"Bung Sam Lan is owned by a group of Chinese and
Thai families," Arostegui said. "They stocked it with
Mekong catfish and then another kind of catfish and then
a third kind. The majority are Mekong.
"They made the lake all catch-and-release. In Thailand

The younger fellow is Arostegui's son Martini, delighted
with his 78-pound Mekong giant catfish, caught on a
bread ball bait. The Arosteguis returned home to Coral
Gables with nine applications for IGFA world records.

that's kind of a new concept. The government recognized
that the catfish were disappearing from the wild and they
started a breeding program and went to the people that own
the lake and asked them for breeding stock."
The World Conservation Union lists the Mekong
giant catfish as critically endangered, with a high risk of
extinction in the wild.
It's a funny-face fish, with ping-pong eyes just below
the comers of a wide, wide mouth. It seems to be waiting
for us to laugh at a bad pun. It may remind you of Fozzy
Bear, the Muppet.
In the Thai language, Mekong catfish are called
Called Pla Buek. It is tempting to say that's because they
grow as big as a Buick, but the sport of fishing deplores
exaggeration.
Still, the Mekong catfish is piscatorial King of Siam,
the world's largest freshwater fish without scales. It grows
to sizes that make comparative pipsqueaks of the ones the
Arosteguis caught on sporting tackle.

Stretching, weightlifting helps anglers get in shape

BY ARNOLD MARKOWITZ
Waterfront News Fishing Writer
There are lots of good fishing
and boating tips to give away this
month, and most are brief, but on
the first drop let's go deep' about
physical conditioning. What's that
you say? Yes, we can fish while
resting on our spreading backsides.
Sure, but we really do need a
little conditioning, a little strength,
if only the minimum that applies to
Arnold Markowitz our kind of fishing.
I don't know much about mus-
cles, so I thought up Martia L'Artz, well-known personal
trainer and fancy fighting star. I found her celebrating her
latest achievement, mistress rank in the demanding disci-
pline of No Khan Du.
"Mistress Martia," I began respectfully, "fisherwomen
and men need to know low-intensity exercises that don't
require them to join a gym, buy expensive equipment or
exert themselves very much. What should I tell them?"
"Hiiiieeeeeyahhh!" she shrieked, leaping into the sky
like a human helicopter and dancing across the waving
branches of a boiled noodle tree.
That's just Martia's way of expressing enthusiasm. She
agreed that we fishing-doers need certain stretches and flex-
es and (here's the disgusting part) a little weight lifting to
keep in shape for our sport. She insisted that isn't as awful
as we might think, and certainly not expensive.

"The most essential piece of equipment is cheap a
pair of those >queez\ thihgie& made of closed-cell foam,"
she said. "You hold them itiyour hands and squeeze. Do it
while reading The Waterfrdnt News or watching television
or waiting for a bite. It's a nearly effortless way to strength-
en your hands, wrists and forearms. Those muscles and ten-
dons are important no matter what sort of fishing you do."
Martia's right. I have a pair of those and they're great. I
don't know their formal name. Squeezy Thingies would be
a good one. Martia should register that as a trademark.
"Just go to a sporting goods store and ask where the
squeezy thingies are," she advised. "Open and close your
fists. They'll know whht you mean."
On Martia's advice, I also went to a home improvement
store to buy a closet pole a few inches longer than my arm
span. I place the pole across my shoulders, behind my neck,
with arms extended. Martia said to turn my upper body as
far as I can to the left and back, then all the way to the right
and back. When the repetition gets tiresome, I switch to
bending sideways, as far as I can, with the pole still across
the shoulders. This stretches and conditions the core muscles
around the middle, including the lower back. Those parts
and our legs are where we're most likely to strain a muscle
or tendon while fighting a large fish.
Finally, get an exercise band. It's just a long, fat rubber
band with handles on the ends. Mine, sold by Bell Sports in

Texas, is enclosed in a loose sleeve so that if the rubber band
breaks it can't rebound like a whip and snap an eye out.
There's a whatchamacallit as Martia calls it in the
middle with something like a golf ball sewn inside. You can
slide that under or over a door, close the door and then pull
against it, simulating a weight stack. The band comes with a
manual of exercises for the important muscle groups.
You already have other useful stuff that you can use as
exercise equipment. Two one-gallon jugs filled with just
about anything equal to a pair of dumbbells, great for biceps
when you lift them waist high in front of you and for triceps
when lifted behind you. Start with the jugs half full of water.
When that gets easy, add more water.
"Every time you walk through a doorway, reach up as
high as you can with both arms and touch the wall above the
door," Martia said. "Those are stretches that you don't need
any spare time to do. When you're trolling on the ocean,
most days give you plenty of time for all these mild exercise
routines. You may not have time or money to spend at a
gym, but you can do these almost any time, any place. This
way, repetition and everyday consistency are possible.
That's better than exhausting workouts that you can only do
on weekends when there's something better to do. Fishing,
for instance."
I've been doing everything she suggested and, to be hon-
est, quite a lot more. I've dropped weight, put on muscle.
"Wow, you are so totally in shape," Martia observed last
time we met.
"How can you tell?"
"Easy. Your shirt's too tight across the chest and shoul-
ders. Your stomach's so flat, your pants are falling down.
Here, put this on."
She handed me a package. I opened it and gasped.
"Oh, Mistress Martia!" I cried. "A black belt! Am I truly
worthy?" ---
"Of course not," the mistress replied, "but it'll hold your
pants up until you get some that fit."

Do you know how to make a good fishing sandwich?
That's a sandwich you can make in the evening, leave in

mean everything

BY MARK ERCOLIN
Waterfront News Columnist
Louis Pasteur, who is among the most
intriguing figures of the 19th century, iot
only developed the vaccine for rabies and
anthrax but also theorized that germs
could cause infection, and thereby
required the washing of hands and instru-
ments before surgery.
Many physicians refused to take heed
because Pasteur was a renowned microbiol-
ogist and chemist but not a licensed sur-
geon! Note that this was when barbers were
still licensed to perform medical services.
The failure to acknowledge Pasteur's
research and discoveries likely caused much
unnecessary death and suffering.
Fortunately, by the end of the 19th
century a more scientific approach to med-
icine prevailed. But the Pasteur controver-
sy points out what can happen when cre-
denaals. alone lake front seat over skills
and good sense. :. -
Such a scenario iscurrently being
played pu! among profe;sinal irinrme str-
4r4iwv which could have a troubhng impact
on the manne industry.
Quoting Florida statutes at a legal sem-
inar earlier this year, a maritime attorney put
forward in a paper the claim that the duties
performed by most marine surveyors fall
..under similar criteria governing licensed
private investigators. Therefore, he reasons
that marine surveyors should be required to
be licensed under the same provisions.
My reading of the statute presents a
different view, and raises some great con-
cerns should this hypothesis ever take hold
among state authorities or the courts. After
reviewing the statute in its entirety, I
believe it clearly indicates that marine sur-
veyors were not an intended professional
group designed to be included under this
particular legal scheme.
Indeed, the legislative intent appears on

its face to be directed toward those who are
in the private security and recovery industry.
The statute seems totally designed for pro-
tecting theproperty and privacy rights of the
general public from illicit private investiga-
tors, sometimes dubbed "private dicks,"
"rent-a-cops" and "repo men."
Here's what is really troubling: If this
licensing theory were to actually take hold
in Florida courts, the end result could be a
greater number of legitimately licensed
marine surveyors than those who might
actually be knowledgeable in the skill base
(think Louis Pasteur).
Now, as of this writing, it appears
that no court or state agency has yet
decided that the licensing statute govern-
ing private'investigators might also per-
tain to marine surveyors. But the fact that
a paper was written on the subject is an
element for concern.
Historically, marine surveyors have
neither been licensed nor bonded, though
-several oreanizanions offer credentials. The
Stwo most prominent are the National
Association of Marine Surveyors--, called.
NAMS and the Society of Accredited
Marine Surveyors, known as SAMS.
Both organizations have a code of
ethics, strive for professional standards and
offer membership and apprenticeship pro-
grams that include examinations for certifi-
cation in designated categories and special-
ties. NAMS members can aspire to the title
of certified marine surveyor (CMS) and
SAM's members work toward the title of
accredited marine surveyor (AMS).
However, these organizations do not
fully act as self-regulating bodies for their
profession, which is known for its inde-
pendent nature. Threats to its present auton-
omy should prompt organizations like
NAMS and SAMS to begin devising a prac-

Mekong catfish: World's largest freshwater fish without scales

The biggest one known to Thailand, a
646-pounder a few inches less than nine
feet long, was caught on May 1 last year by
Mekong River netmen. National
Geographic reported that they tried to keep
it alive but failed, so the fish was eaten by
local villagers.
After catfishing, the Arosteguis went
flyfishing for barramundi on another pri-
vate lake in Thailand.
The younger one caught a 15-pounder
(6.84 kilos) for a pending junior record on.
6-pound tippet and his pop got two a
17.3-pounder on 6-pound tippet and the

one shown here, 18.63 pounds on a 4-
pound tippet. Weighed in Thai terms, that's
140.8 tamlung. The flyrods were 7-weight
and the flies were purple streamers that
Arostegui created.
The barramundi is a brackish-water
fish that's a lot like a snook, Arostegui said
- similar body shape, though a bit fatter,
similar mouth, similar behavior.
No sense going to Asia without also
going to Malaysia, is there? Right, so off
the Arosteguis went for giant snakeheads
and six more pending IGFA records -
two for Martin and four junior records
for Martini.
The Malaysian brand is a slightly dif-

ferent species that runs bigger than the bulls
eye snakehead found in Florida, where the
Arosteguis had set a pile of records -
which competition had reduced to one.
In the Thai language,
Mekong catfish are called
Called Pla Buek.

"A kid in Broward County had an 8-
pound snakehead to beat Martini," his dad
said. "The first day in Malaysia he got an
8-1/2 pounder, and the next day a 9-
pounder and the day after that a 9-3/4. And
then he caught a 10-3/4 pounder."

Their lures were streamers that
Arostegui created. They headed home with
nine new applications for world records.
You might spot them one of these
days not on a transoceanic airliner to
the Orient but on a roadside canal in the
Miami suburbs, fishing to break their
own fly records for light-tippet catches
of... what?
Mighty tarpon? Ferocious butterfly
peacock? No, the pugnacious but humble
oscar, an entry-level fish that maxes out a
bit above two pounds. They'd love to get
one at 2-1/2.
"We're equal opportunity fishermen,"
Arostegui said.

Palm Beach County hurricane plan in the works

A pre-hurricane briefing in June involving over 25 law
enforcement agencies, bridgetenders, railway bridge compa-
nies and other groups resulted in a critical exchange of infor-
mation, allowing all representatives to keep in touch via cell
phone should an emergency arise, Herhold said.
S 'Timing is everything," he said.
Bohnsack is involved with a severe weather advisory
team'that has a representative from each port in South
Florida. Members keep in contact with one another and then
disseminate the latest updated information from the U.S.
Coast Guard to boaters and marine businesses, she said.
"It worked well with Katrina and Wilma," Bohnsack
said. "We didn't get too involved with Emesto because the

storm took a turn. But we were ready."
Preparations are continuing in Palm Beach County,
where the marine industries association is working with
county officials and businesses to establish a countywide
plan for next season, and is seeking to add participation from
the insurance industry.
The association is looking at huge parcels of property
such as ball fields and parking lots, where boats can be stored
and tied down on dry land.
The proposal-is an alternative togoing up river, where,
spots that were once safe are now developed and deemed pri-
vate property, he said.
Pleased with the reaction to Emesto, Carter wants
boaters to remain vigilant. "I hope we can continue and not
get nonchalant about it," he said.

Sometimes te bet bulk d is no bl d OCTOBER 2006

Sometimes the best bulkhead is no bulkhead at all

finally unpack and eat without it falling apart and dribbling
fixin's all over yourself and the deck.
There's a sound tactical advantage to a sandwich that
doesn't get soggy and sloppy. Performing the sandwich
gambit is a well known and often reliable trick for turning
on a fishing bite that seems like somebody unplugged it. You
know how that works: Soon as both your hands are busy
with lunch, the fish turn on. You need an easily managed
sandwich that you can simply put down and grab your fish-
'ing rod. If the brad is wet and disintegrating, you instinctive-
ly try to manage it while grabbing the rod at the same time,
and that's how things go wrong.
Soft breads like plain white get soggier, faster, than
coarse, crusty breads like rye and multi-grain, which proba-
bly are healthier anyhow. Start with that kind, still not put-
ting any wet stuff on the bread. Put a slice of meat or cheese
or a leaf of lettuce on first. Then add mustard, ketchup, may-
onnaise or whatever as you layer on other ingredients. Slices
of ripe tomato make a sandwich swell, but don't let them
come in contact with the bread before you eat or they will
soak it through. The same goes for tuna salad, chicken salad,
anything using mayonnaise as a binder.

Here are some good things from the FWC, our Florida
state agency in charge of fishing.
SThe South Region Freshwater Fishing Guide, just
issued, puts together a bunch of contents you used to have to
spend time searching for separately and some info that's
new. There are sections on popular fishing locations and spe-
cial regulations, a guide to fish camps and other access
points, flip-casting technique, bank fishing opportunities,
fishing for butterfly peacock and other features.
Right now you can only get it online at

loads slowly, at least on my computer. Sometime between
pretty soon and eventually, a printed copy's supposed to be
published. Saltwater sports who turn up their noses at fresh-
water are missing some marvelous sport. Maybe this 32-
page booklet will open their eyes to it.
Test your boating safety knowledge by taking an
online quiz at www.MyFWC.com/Boating/quiz. There are
only eight questions, and there's a good chance you'll get a
couple wrong. The idea is to prove you don't know as much
about safety as you think you know. Thus humbled, your
next move is to sign up for a thorough boating safety course.
The July-September issue of the City Fisher, a
newsletter for canal and urban-suburban pond anglers in
South Florida, lists freshwater bait and tackle stores by
county Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dadel Jolhi
Cimbaro puts out the City Fisher at FWC regional headquar-
ters in West Palm Beach. Hard copies are hard to find, but
you can read it online at www.myfwc.com.

Before diving into waterfront real estate, take a close
look at the bulkhead. Pick a calm, clear day to inspect under
water with scuba or snorkeling gear, or hire a professional
bulkhead-seawall expert to inspect it for you. Bad bulkheads
usually are easy to identify by cracks and sags. From the sur-
face of clear water, especially at low tide, you may notice

shoring-up that's been done. Damaged bulkheads are bound
to get worse. Before signing a contract to buy, you'll want to
know what it will cost to replace a failing bulkhead and
who's going to pay for prevention if that's an option.
If you're selling and don't know the condition of your
bulkhead, you'd better find out. Florida law requires you to
disclose material defects on the property.
Often the best bulkhead is no bulkhead. If the land has
a gradual slope to the water's edge, rather than a sheer drop,
you may be better off letting it stay that way especially if
neighbor properties on the same waterway are not bulkhead-
ed and not eroded.

Don't heave your anchor like a bait netter or an
Olympiic discus pitcher: Lower it gradually with chain and
rope following the anchor down, up current of where you
want to wind up. Then pay out the necessary amount of rope
and belay. A showoff throw will make a frightful splash,
* chasing fish. It's also likely that a thrown anchor will land
wrong when it hits bottom, failing to.dig in and forcing you
to haul it up and start over.
S* *
When you have the good luck to encounter a school of
fish in a feeding frenzy and miss a strike or two, that's just
bad luck. If you keep missing strikes, sharpen your hooks.

Let the festivities begin: Jamestown celebrates 400th year

BY TERRY CONWAY
Waterfront News Writer
From a ferry traveling the James River, a statue of Capt.
John Smith is visible on shore more than 3,000 miles away
from Smith's native England.
On a morning like this in May 1607, Smith and 103
other Englishmen finally spotted the Jamestown Island
shoreline after a four-month voyage across the Atlantic. The
foothold they would soon establish evolved into the first per-
manent English settlement in North America.
Fast forward to 2006 when a new movie exploring the
relationships between the white colonists and American
Indians is set to be released in November.
"The New World" highlights the romance between
Jamestown founder Smith played by Colin Farrell and
the Indian princess Pocahontas, who intervened to save him
when he was captured by her tribe.
The release of "The New World" is expected to also
publicize preparations for Jamestown's 400th anniversary in
2007. The festivities kicked off last May with an 80-day sail
of the newly commissioned 17th-century ship, Godspeed,
which brought a bit of American history to ports of call on
the eastern seaboard.
The 88-foot replica of one of the ships that brought set-
tlers to Virginia in 1607 also serves as a floating museum.
The ship will return to Jamestown, where it will be open to

visitors, along with replicas of the Susan Constant and

Nautical highlights
A glimpse at a nautical chart of the nearby coastal vil-
lage of Deltaville reveals an incredible network of rivers,
creeks, streams and saltwater marshes. At one time, this vil-

lage was a boat-building center with more than 20 boatyards
turning out everything from steel hulls to classic wooden
boats.
These days Deltaville has full service marinas, clubs
and yachting resorts. The area's population of 800 swells to
5,000 during the warm weather months. Traffic eases in the
fall on the surrounding creeks, rivers and bays, but be sure
to follow charts and be aware of shoals and sandbars.
At the tip of Deltaville is Stingray Point, named in the
early 17th century. According to legend, Smith was stung by
a stingray there while exploring the bay.
Miles of shoreline create rich habitat for deer, foxes,
beavers and muskrats. On walks along the water, we see
great blue herons, wild turkeys, bald eagles, hawks, pelicans
and osprey. This is the Atlantic Flyway, a major route for
migrating birds.
Boaters can walk into town and get a ride back to the
marina from the restaurants' shuttle service. Groceries and
provisions are available at the Village Market and Little
Sue's convenience store.
B & B the Sanderling House and the Pine Tree Cottage
are set on the banks of Broad Creek with Walter's Marina on
site. They offer special sailing school packages with the
Virginia School of Sailing and Norton's Sailing School.

Dining and beyond
Patrons enjoy delicious seafood omelets, smoked
salmon dishes and traditional dishes featuring select thick
cut Virginia bacon.
Taylor's, a local landmark since 1929, is a boxy build-
ing with a parking lot mulched with oyster shells. A favorite
choice is the plump soft-shell crab sauteed in a light wine
sauce. Taylor's menu is a testament to the bounty of the bay.
The Holly Point Art & Seafood Festival will be held on
Oct. 14 on the grounds of The Deltaville Maritime Museum,
located on the bank of Mill Creek. More than 50 regional
arts and crafts displays will be on hand.

I am a retired boat captain.
Because of boredom and my intense love of boats,
I started babysitting yachts. The job of a port
captain is to open the boat, check all bilges, dock
lines and fenders seven days a week. Wash the
boat when needed. Check all fluids in main
engines and generators, start up and run up to
temperature. Check batteries for water. Check all
house lights and replace if necessary. Over 30 yrs.
