Smooth sailing predicted in the

wake of recent boat show sale

'From Sea and the Earth'
Artist Felix D. Gonzalez has long been inspired by
the sea. His latest exhibit, consisting of 11
sculptures, can be viewed at the Broward County
Main Library in Fort Lauderdale throughout April.
Please see accompanying story on page 11.

An announcement that new owners have taken over the
company charged with producing the Fort Lauderdale
International Boat Show doesn't seem to have caused much of
a ripple in the local marine industry and boating communities.
"It's business as usual," said Frank Herhold, executive
director of the Marine Industries Association of South
Florida. "The show will go on."
Boaters and marine industry honchos were greeted with
the news on March 23 that Yachting Promotions, Inc. had
bcen su.-ld ito Efl m S kp Zimbalist, II, chairman and chief
executi\ e officer of Acur\e Interest Media, Inc. and the son of
actor. Efrem Zimbalits. Jr.
Zimbalist iakes over YPI from Kaye Pearson,
whose company has produced the Fort Lauderdale
event for 30 years.
The Fort Lauderdale show is owned by the Marine
Industries Association of South Florida and is labeled as the
largest boat show in the world.
YPI also produces the Yacht & Brokerage Show in
Miami Beach, the Palm Beach Boat Show, the St. Petersburg
Fall Show and the Suncoast Boat Show.
Zimbalist will now be at the helm for all those events.
However, the same production team will be in place and
Kaye Pearson will have a continuing relationship with YPI,
Herhold said.
"I think Mr. Zimbalist is the right person at the right time
to move the Fort Lauderdale show into the future," Herhold

said. 'This represents the combining of his publishing busi-
ness with a very successful tradeshow business, and will cre-
ate linkages between readers, advertisers, exhibitors and
attendees."
Prior to the announcement about YPI's sale, Zimbalist
had met with MIASF's board. "It was at his request,"
Herhold said. '"he general consensus was that it is a good fit.
He said he bought YPI because of whatit is, what it means to
the industry and it's potential for the future."
J.J. McConnell, owner of Gilman Yachts of Fort
Lauderdale, has been an exhibitor at the Fort Lauderdale
show for 28 years. "We were very, very happy to have Skip
Zimbalist on board," he said. "Kaye has been a long time
friend and confidant, and a hero of our industry. He will
remain with the group to guide Skip. It's all good."
Under the new ownership, with Pearson's backing and
guidance and MIASF's support, the will show will continue
to flourish, McConnell said.
"It's a wonderful event. It produces a lot of jobs and sup-
ports the local economy."
Pete Woods, director of brokerage sales for MarineMax
Yachts & Brokerage in Fort Lauderdale, said he had dinner
with Pearson before the announcement of YPI's sale.
"He assured me that the entire brokerage community
and new boat industry will continue to benefit from the
show," Woods said. "He assured me that the takeover and
transition will be very smooth. I'm encouraged by that. I am

Blueways plan aims to put more people on the water

BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTTL
Waterfront News Writer
Volunteers with the Broward Urban River Trails can
expect to have a busy summer.
If all goes according to plan, the non-profit organization
will open a new canoe-kayak launching facility near the
Davie border and unveil a new map detailing points of inter-
est to boaters cruising the Middle River.
Some of the monies for the two projects come from the
Blueway Bash, an annual fund-raiser. The event, now in its
eighth year, will be held 7 to 11 p.m. on April 22 at the
Lauderdale Marine Center, at 2001 SW 20th St. in Fort
Lauderdale. Tickets are $125 per person.
The evening will feature food, entertainment and a
silent auction that will include two VIP passes to the air and
sea show in May on Fort Lauderdale beach.
This year's bash will be the first time that the party is
being held in the spring. The event previously took place in
June but the date was moved to avoid heat, humidity and the
possibility of tropical storms, said John Rude, executive direc-
tor of Broward Urban River Trails, also known as BURT.
"It's the most casual black tie event you could ever go to:'
he said. "It's a black tie event that you go in casual clothes."

The party is the only fund-raiser held by BURT. The
group is run by volunteers, with the exception of Rude, who
is its only paid employee.
"The bash is our major fund-raiser," Rude said. "Pardon
the pun, we sink or swim by that."
Last year's event attracted around 150 people and raised
some $30,000. Proceeds benefit BURT's programs, which
include educational and community outreach and waterway
cleanup that are held every other month.
Since its formation in 1994, BURT has worked joint-
ly with various federal, state and county agencies, and
with elected city officials. In addition to its fund-raising
bash, the group receives contributions from private
donors and businesses.

The nonprofit Broward Urban
River Trails group seeks to link
blueways and greenways, giving
people better access to water
and nature.

All of the programs have the same goal-- to protect, pre-
serve and enhance Broward's waterways. Its members also
strongly believe that to get people invested and interested, it's
important that the boating community have access, Rude said.
One way to get people on the water is by building
canoe-kayak launching facilities. The group's first launch
was installed five years ago at Delevoe Park in Fort
Lauderdale, using funds from the South Florida Water
Management District.
The water management district is again funding a new
canoe-kayak launch facility at the intersection of State Road
7 and Orange Drive, near the Davie border. The project,

Wanted: shallow-draft boats to ferry Baynanza volunteers

BY ARNOLD MARKOWITZ
Waterfront News Writer
In a spirit of doing something that feels good and is
good, let's take a look at Baynanza, the annual spring-
cleaning of Biscayne Bay's littered shorelines, and some
alternatives for voluntary service.
Choose Baynanza, and your mission will be to join
thousands of other tree-huggers, young and old, embracing
nature on a glorious spring Saturday, Earth Day, April 22.
That deed compares very favorably with many others,
each of them noble in its own way, but with undeniable
downsides. For example:
Jury duty: A racketeering case or real-life murder mys-
tery would be thrilling, even though you're cooped up in the
courthouse for days, but what if you're picked to try a trade-
mark lawsuit? Potentially tedious.
Army service: You're outdoors a lot, but made to carry
heavy objects for miles, while training to shoot someone
who intends to shoot you first. Possibly dangerous.
Coaching or umpiring organized kids' baseball: In
some leagues you'll need ear plugs. In others, bodyguards.
Likely nerve-wracking.
Then there's Baynanza. Few things are for everyone,
but this might be one of them. Wearing a big hat and old
sneakers that are almost ready for the trash barrel, you wade
in Biscayne's shallows, rescuing mangrove roots and their
tiny inhabitants from stuff that's supposed to be in garbage
cans, not the bay.
You pick up coffee cups, burger wrappers, bottles, cans
and who knows what else. Once a Girl Scout found a pack-
et of cash, $27,000. You'll see a lot of Girl Scouts out there.
The organization is listed as one of Baynanza's event hosts.
If you have a shallow-draft boat, you ferry others to an
island, or someone with a boat ferries you. You can paddle
your own canoe or kayak, pretending it's a garbage scow.
Pelicans splash, gulls soar. A flat swirl on the water
tells you a manatee is watching, gratefully.
The Baynanza organizers, Miami-Dade County's envi-
ronmental agency, DERM for short, will give you a color-
ful souvenir T-shirt.
At your elbow, a voice you never heard before, com-
pelling as your favorite music, asks for a dollop of your

sunscreen. Eyes meet. Romance blooms.
All right, that's expecting too much, but it could hap-
pen.
For sure, though, you load barges with bags and bags
and bags of stuff that someone else threw away.
Emboldened by sanctimony, you daydream of finding and
denouncing such a villain, a startled stranger who'll never
do it again.
Finally, faster than you thought possible, noon tolls. It's
over, but good stuff is still happening. There's an afternoon
party at the Deering Estate (a county park) with entertain-
ment, environmental activities and exhibits until 2 p.m.
Then you can spend the rest of the afternoon paddling a
kayak on the bay. Shake-A-Leg Miami, a Baynanza spon-
sor, will comp the rental.
If you've used your boat to ferry volunteers to islands,
you're in a raffle with two valuable prizes: Launch ramp
passes, good for a full year at any of Miami-Dade's six
county marinas from Haulover to Homestead.
Finally, you learn what you and all those other people
accomplished. Last year it was 27 tons of trash, rubbish,

garbage, junk and refuse, collected by 6,724 volunteers. A
year before that, 569 more people collected 24 tons.
Proportionally, little of it is the sort of stuff discarded
by boaters and fishing-doers, although what they do toss or
lose overboard may be disproportionately harmful. Fishing
lines and hooks strangle and stick seabirds that pick them
up. Plastic bags kill turtles that mistake them for their prey,
jellyfish. The bay has several picnic islands, maintained by
county staff but nevertheless dependable sources any time
for bottle caps and pop tabs from cans.
Most of the trash collection has onshore origins, care-
lessly dumped often miles inland and delivered to the
bay by wind, canal currents and storm drains, according to
years of analysis by DERM. That stands for the Department
of Environmental Resources Management, which has an
institutional fondness for long titles like Chief, Office of
Sustainable Environment and Education.
That's the tile of Julio Calle, who's in charge of
Baynanza for the second year in a row. This is number 24
in the series, and he has been involved in most of them.
Calle learned long ago not to worry much about year-
to-year fluctuations in volunteer participation, like last
year's slip to 6,724.
"That was decent. It depends on the weather and what
else is going on in town," he says. "We compete with other
events that are happening."
Late April is pretty close to the start of the rainy season,
which can't be predicted precisely. Then again, it's safely
past Easter and Passover. April 22 also marks the end of
Animal Cruelty/Human Violence Awareness Week, which
shouldn't present a serious conflict.
One sure thing is the prevalence of kid volunteers, who
consistently outnumber adults: Last year, by 3,680 to 3,044;
the year before by 4,073 to 3,220. Year to year, Girl Scout
troops lead the pack, followed by other youth outfits.
Family groups also are common.

Billfish tournament has the stuff of a rollicking sea operetta

BY ARNOLD MARKOWITZ
Waterfront News Writer
S You never know who's going
to win a billfish tournament, it
says here.
The crew: What, never?
The captain: Hardly ever!
We borrow those last two lines
from Gilbert & Sullivan's rollicking
S sea operetta, "HMS Pinafore." Too
J ,- bad they never composed one about
f a sailfish competition. What fun
Arnold Markowitz they would have had with a captain
boasting of his expertise, yet unwilling to predict the out-
come of such a thing as the Miami Billfish Tournament.
He would say something like this, but much more
singably:
"You could write down the names of a dozen or more
boats, shut your eyes and put your finger on the page with
as much chance of picking the winner as if you'd spent a
week trying to figure it out."
Gilbert and Sullivan would have us all tapping our feet
to that, setting the stage for bigger laughs to come. First,
though, their libretto would tack to the nuts and bolts of the
tournament, with the captain and a chorus of smart-aleck bait
riggers enumerating it all more lyrically than this unorches-
trated version.
It's a big tournament 105 boats last year with 469
fishermen and women who caught 554 billfish, the most yet.
From the proceeds, 14 marine conservation and enhancement
projects were awarded $51,900 in grants, a purpose whose

kids 15 and 16 years old," she said. "We had the junior divi-

guess maybe 12, maybe 15 at most. They'll be on boats

Boat timeshare

concept launched

BY MARK ERCOLIN
Waterfront News Columnist
It's nice to share. At least that's what
a certain insipid purple dinosaur says on
public television. But if you're an adult
who wants to share in the use of a boat, it
can become a rather complicated process.
Some people without the resources
or the inclination to buy a vessel still
want the use of a boat on a part time
basis. In the past, this meant renting or
chartering a boat under the terms of a
charter contract.
Recently though, for better or worse,
some are trying to adapt the land-based
strategy of timesharing to the boat char-
tering concept. Before analyzing what
this might mean to the potential time-
share client, it might help to review what
traditional boat chartering usually entails.
From the legal perspective, there are
three types of charter arrangements: time
charters, voyage charters and demise char-
ters, also known as a "bareboat" charter.
A voyage charter is when the underly-
ing vessel owner takes responsibility for the
captain and crew, and the vessel is hired to
get something or someone to a designated
location. Think of a voyage charter as hir-
ing a taxi or a delivery service.
In a time charter, the underlying ves-
sel owner remains responsible for the
captain and crew, but the vessel is hired
for a certain length of time and the rent-
ing party often determines the destina-
tions the boat will go to before it returns
to its homeport at a designated hour.
Chartering a fishing or diving boat with a
captain for the afternoon is a pretty good
example of a time charter.
In a demise or bareboat .charter, the
renter becomes, in effect, the owner of
the boat from the time he or she takes
control of it. If the vessel requires a cap-

I WATE T-NEW

tain and crew, they will be hired under a
separate contract and the renter becomes
liable for damage to the vessel and
possibly injury to any passengers dur-
ing the time of the charter. Think of bare-
boat chartering as renting a car, except
that your platinum card won't pay for
any collision damages.
Boating timeshares appear to be a
variation of the bareboat charter concept.
This is slightly different in design from
land-based timesharing, when the user of
the property would have an actual perma-
nent ownership interest in its use and dis-
posal. Upon examination, this difference
makes a certain amount of legal sense.
The ownership of real property is usu-
ally regulated by the state authorities where
the property resides, whereas vessel owner-
ship and the liens that may be incurred by a
vessel generally fall under the purview of
the federal court. Because of this dichoto-
my between state and federal systems, cre-
ating a workable timeshare situation for a
vessel requires careful design.
In Florida, the definition of time-
shares was recently expanded to include
boats with timeshare agreements lasting
three or more years. The vessel time-
shares established in the state that I have
examined appear to have only one real
owner, while all other participants are
actually parties to what is basically a
bareboat charter contract that will expire
before three years. These bareboat partic-
ipants have no ownership interest in the
vessel other than those responsibilities
they-would otherwise have as a tradition-
al bareboat charter party.
While there may be other timeshare
plans out there for vessels, the one previ-
ously described, or some similar variation,

Timeshares can present liability complications

seems to be the type that is enduring under legal scrutiny.
So, what does this mean if you're considering a ves-
sel timeshare program as an alternative to actual boat
ownership? I would advise checking all contracts careful-
ly well before signing, and consider the following:
First, you may be committing yourself to a specif-
ic boat to be used at specific times. Trying to change
that commitment likely would result in financial for-
feit. Moreover, a timeshare may not grant any real own-
ership interest to the vessel, meaning your ability to
"sell" your contract interest if it is even allowed -
may be limited.
This might also mean being prepared for the value of the
timeshare to actually depreciate as time goes on, as opposed

to a land-based timesharing that can sometimes appreciate.
Additionally, while a vessel timeshare participant
may not have an actual ownership interest in the boat,
there would still be a liability concern even when others
are using the vessel. For this reason, you should make sure
the timeshare program you join is properly insured for
such contingencies.
As you can see, boat timesharing may not be for
everyone and should be approached with the mind of a
sophisticated consumer.
Remember, although Barney the TV dinosaur might
tell us how nice it is to share, keep in mind.that he's real-
ly just a guy in a big purple sock.

Library exhibit depicts artist's bond with the ocean

BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Felix D. Gonzalez has always had a connection to
the sea.
"My love of the ocean dates back to childhood," said
Gonzalez, who was born in Mariel, a port in Cuba. "I was
raised around the ocean."
These days, Gonzalez, 53, is showing his relationship to
the water through art. Several of his sculptures depict sea
life, both real and mythical.
His latest exhibit can be seen through the end of April
at the Broward County Main Library in downtown Fort
Lauderdale. The facility is the most recent venue that has
welcomed Gonzalez since he embarked on a second career
as a professional artist four-and-a-half years ago, after retir-
ing as a captain with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
Gonzalez's two-month run on the library's first floor is
called "De Mar y La Tierra." Translated from Spanish, the
title means, "From Sea and the Earth," he said.
Of the 11 pieces at the library, six are marine-related.
The sculptures include a baby sperm whale that measures 13
feet long, four feet wide and eight feet high. A device inside
the plaster and steel body emits actual recorded sounds of
the mammals at sea.
There is also a three-foot-long dolphin and a mer-
maid wearing a crown of seashells. Both are made of
mahogany wood.
An 18-inch angelfish is also made of mahogany, with
wrought iron used to create its fins. A mahi-mahi, spanning
eight feet tall from head to tail, has scales made of copper.
It took five to six months for Gonzalez to complete the
mahi-mahi. "I aged each scale to get the right patina," he
said. "There are different hues, from greens to reds, depend-
ing on the light."
Other sculptures consist of a giraffe, birds, a giant sun-
flower that lights up and a statute of St. Francis of Assisi.
All were made from recyclable refuse such as wood, steel
and brass that Gonzalez said he finds along the roadside
and elsewhere.
Sometimes the shape of the materials dictate the type of

sculpture he will create. For instance, the whale was inspired
because the curvature of the pipes reminded him of the
mammal diving in the ocean, Gonzalez said.
Because Gonzalez is attracted to nature, much of his
work depicts animals and fish.
"In my sculptures, there's always some form of move-
ment," he said. "The whale and mahi-mahi are formed to
look as if they are diving."
The sculptures have been drawing a lot of attention
from visitors, said Sharon Morris, programs and exhibits

coordinator for the Main Library, at 100 S. Andrews Ave.
Morris said she learned about Gonzalez after he held a
similar exhibit at the Southwest Regional Library in
Pembroke Pines. "I was impressed."
Art exhibits are usually installed on the sixth floor of the
Main Library. An exception was made for Gonzalez because
his pieces were too big to fit into the elevator, she said.
"We've gotten many positive comments from the pub-
lic. Being in South Florida and having water everywhere, his
art is very appropriate."

Waves of competition stiff at upcoming fishing tournament

I:llUI IHI O]1
with Capt. Ray Rosher.
The Grand Anglers Club competition sponsored by Yale
Mortgage (entry fee $1,000) gave a $28,900 prize to Walter
and Esther Vazquez' team on Freedom with Capt. John Louie
Dudas. They also won the Pot of Gold, sponsored last year
by Boater's World. The prize was $22,100, a great return on
the $500 entry fee. Okuma Fishing Tackle sponsors that con-
test this year.
Freedom also won the billfish division's featured first
prize of $15,000. That enabled it to claim the $30,000
Libertad Challenge prize, awarded to the boat team scoring
the most sailfish releases in a four-tournament series.
Freedom is not in the Libertad race this year, but at least
five other teams could win it by doing well in the Miami tour-
nament.
That brings us back to Gilbert, Sullivan and the difficul-
ty of choosing a probable winner for either the Libertad prize
or this tournament.
One team may very well win both, but there's a good
chance that we will applaud a different winner in each.
The hot boat right now is L&H, owned by the Dudas
family of charter boatmen and led by Capt. Neal Orange Jr.
"And a right good captain too," the Gilbert & Sullivan
chorus would sing, as they did in Pinafore.
Nothing rhymes with Orange, but they'd work around
that. HMS Pinafore's skipper is called Capt. Corcoran.
Nothing rhymes with his name either.
Our fishing operetta skipper might wonder if Orange and
his fishing buddies (the David family, Fenton Langston,
Chris White and Rodger Wilson) are riding a crest too high
and too lucky to last.
Going into the Miami Tournament, they're on top
of the Libertad standings with 50 releases in the first
three events of the series the Shelley Sailfish
Shootout, the Bob Lewis Billfish Tournament and the
Florida Billfish Masters.
Of those, L&H won only the Masters, their best effort
with 21 releases. They finished in a three-way tie for fourth
place in the Shelley and tied for third in the Lewis.

Now comes the series' crown jewel, whose prime spon-
sors like to see it called the Yamaha Contender Miami
Billfish Tournament. On second reference they settle for
YCMBT, which is a little more singable.
A team as consistent as L&H has a good chance to win
this, plus the Libertad prize, which this year is $25,000.
L&HFs problem is that the competition also is good enough
to win.
At least 10 other teams could win the YCMBT. '
Four of those teams are close enough in the Libertad
standings behind L&H to overtake it. Those are No Mercy,
Wound Up, Get Lit and Owl's Nest.
Using the other Libertad Challenge tournaments as
benchmarks, let's figure:
L&ITs lowest score in the three events was nine releas-
es in the Bob Lewis. If the team does that poorly in the
YCMBT, its total for the Libertad prize will be 59 releases -
not bad but not great and maybe not good enough to win.
Now, suppose any of the four other leaders matches its
own highest score in the three other tournaments. In that
event, No Mercy would take the Libertad with 67 releases.
Wound Up or Get Lit would win it with 61. Owl's Nest would
have 59.
If all four should match their prior best, and L&H only

Up close
Registration forms and more information are on the
tournament website, www.miamibillfish.com or call
305-598-2525.
Location: all tournament events are dockside at
Miami Beach Marina, 300 Alton Road, Miami Beach;
www.miamibeachmarina.com
Get involved: Volunteer observers with billfishing
experience are needed on boats to oversee compliance
with rules. For details, call the tournament office at 305-
598-2525. To volunteer, attend a mandatory one-hour
meeting 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, at the Miami Beach
Rod & Reel Club, 208 S. Hibiscus Island.
Onshore volunteers are needed to set up exhibits,
sell souvenirs and raffle tickets, etc. Call 305-598-2525.

match its least, L&H would fall to a fifth-place tie in the
Libertad.
Other than those five, at least five other teams are good
enough to win the YCMBT. Those are not in the Libertad
running but all have histories so strong that victory would not
be a surprise.
At this level, the waves of competition are steep. You can
go from crest to trough without doing anything wrong, just
because someone else has lucked into a bigger cluster of fish
and managed to stay with it.
Some of the leading contenders already have beaten
L&H in tournaments this year:
No Mercy Rob Ruwitch, Rick Arnold, Albert Castro
and Steve Call with Capt. Steve Cunningham beat L&H
by two sailfish releases in the Shelley Real Estate Sailfish
Shootout, first of the four Libertad Trophy events.
No Mercy didn't even win the Shelley, but tied for third
place. Owl's Nest, whose crew is led by Matty Tambor, won
with 24 releases.
Next on the Libertad schedule was the Capt. Bob Lewis
tournament, and what did Tambor's mighty team catch? One
sailfish. The Lewis was won by Uptight with 14 sailfish
releases in two days. L&H tied for fourth place. Hot? Not.
Then came the Florida Billfish Masters. Swoosh!
Orange found sailfish, lots of them. His anglers caught and
released 21 in two days to win the tournament.
That was not a huge score, but when added to the team's
other respectable scores it gave L&H a three-tournament total
of 50 releases.
It would be interesting to see that kind of competition in
the peewee contests. It isn't likely with only trophies and
merchandise for prizes.
The absence of cash is understandable. Just imagine a
kid 10 or 11 years old winning a lot of money.
Could he handle it responsibly? No. A kid like that, con-
ditioned to competition fishing' would buy a boat overloaded
with horsepower, enter tournaments on his own, beat the
deck boots off his own family and yours, then start knocking
off the tournament bigshots.
Could they handle that responsibly?

Number of clean up volunteers declining

"Sometimes parents who bring their children tell us
they started coming out as kids many years ago," Calle says.
He'd like to find a way to make tradition a part of
Baynanza for boat owners, too. Last year, he started the
raffle for annual ramp passes at the county marinas. It
worked modestly if at all, raising boat participation
from 38 to 40.
A more optimistic view would be that boater partici-
pation increased a little even though total volunteers were
down by 8 percent. A return this year to a more typical
total of 7,000-plus volunteers could be expected to add a
few more boaters. Calle thinks the ramp pass raffle is still
worth repeating.
"We could use more boats," he said. "About 60 would
be perfect. That would be our goal."
Boaters will not have to ferry sacks of trash. The
pickers will leave those at cleanup sites for transfer to
hired barges.

to transfer volunteers between the mainland and most
island cleanup sites. If you're worried about running
aground, consult your tide charts.
Baynanza's website and program booklet (see the Up
close box) list 27 cleanup sites from the Oleta River in the
north to Biscayne National Park and Homestead in the
south, plus two locations on the Miami River at Sewell Park
and Jose Marti Park.
The site nearest you may be filled up with early regis-
trants by the time you volunteer, so be willing to go to
another where you're needed more.
-In mid-March, three of the bay sites had reached max-
imum volunteer registration. Baynanza communications
manager Luis Espinoza said two of the filled-up spots were
Virginia Key Historic Beach South (there were still open-
ings at Virginia Key North as of this writing), and Cape
Florida State Park on Key Biscayne.

link has a sublink for skippers. You will not be asked to
carry garbage on your boat.

If that number is backed up, call DERM's main line at

You'll need a large-brimmed hat, sneakers that
are almost ready to throw away, loose-fitting light-
weight clothes, work gloves, sunscreen, insect
repellent and. snacks. Bottled water will be supplied
by Zephyrhills.
April 22 is close to the beginning of rainy season, so
a poncho or rain jacket may come in handy. Baynanza
will go on, rain or-shine, unless there's lightning.

Blueway bash proceeds to finance future projects

started five years ago, is costing around $25,000, Rude said.
It will have a sidewalk that extends to the water's
edge, allowing people to safely launch their canoes and
kayaks. Work is expected to be completed by late spring
or early summer.
Another project, started last year and due to be finished
this summer, is a map with historical, cultural and other
points of interest on the Middle River. It will detail a seven-
mile loop that encompasses Wilton Manors.
The map will be similar to one that BURT created eight
years ago, detailing points of interest along a 25-mile loop
that includes the north and south forks of the New River,
Rude said.
BURT wants the new launch near Davie to be a model
for future facilities elsewhere in Broward. County officials
are in the process of connecting all the blueway and green-
way corridors into one large trail system. BURT wants
launches at those areas that are connected to the water.
"With the launches, the public will have greater access
and with greater access, they will be more likely to take
stewardship of the waterways," Rude said.
Facilities will either accommodate canoes and kayaks
only, or a ramp will be built for small motorized boats.
Marylyn Springer, who chairs BURT's board of
directors, said the organization is very committed to
introducing more people to the joys of traveling along

"When you don't see many of the rivers and inland

Once people see how many rivers and tributaries exist,
they can become addicted to the experience of being out in
nature, Springer said. "You hear birds you've never heard
before and see manatees," she said. "Once that happens, you
want to do that more often."
Kevin Carter, a Blueway Bash event crew volunteer,
said BURT has been vital in raising more awareness of the
county's urban waterway system.
"Our waterways are tucked in between the Everglades
to the west and the coral reefs in our ocean waters," said
Carter, who works as a natural resource specialist with the
Broward County Environmental Protection Department's
environmental monitoring division. "These canals and rivers
in the urban areas connect the two and are important recre-

of focus to them."

Status quo expected under show's new celebrity owners

sure, because Kaye was such as conscientious supporter of
the marine industry, he was very diligent in making sure the
people who bought his company will carry on the tradition in
the same way he-did."
The change in ownership probably won't even be
noticed by many visitors attending the show, said Patience
Cohn, a boater and long time waterfront homeowner in
Fort Lauderdale.
"As a consumer, I doubt there will even be a blip on the
radar, that anyone will even notice the difference."
A regular attendee, Cohn has watched the event grow
over the decades. In the 1970s, she worked as a dock girl at
Pier 66. "After work, I used to walk to the show at Bahia Mar."
The Fort Lauderdale show reflects the value of the indus-
try, she said. "As the industry has grown, so has the show."
The event, held in October, displays more than $1.6 mil-
lion worth of boats and accessories and draws more than
100,000 visitors. It generates more than $650 million in boat
and accessory sales each year, according to MIASE
S"The show has a huge influence, not only on South
Florida's $13.6 billion marine industry, but also on the glob-
al marine industry because it is acknowledged as an intera-
tional marine marketplace second to none," Herhold said.

"It's important to the consumer because the show is
where the new innovations are rolled out', Cohn said.
Pearson was an integral part of the show's creation.
Along the way, he has developed a boat show machine that is
strongly structured, she said.
Because of Zimbalist's ties to the publishing world,
Cohn said the only change might be more detailed materials
for consumers.

Active Interest Media was formed in 2003. The compa-
ny, based in El Segundo, Calif., publishes "Black Belt,"
"Better Nutrition," "Log Home Design," "Log Home
Living," "Timber Home Living," "Southwest Art" and
"Vegetarian Times" magazines.
Zimbalist's background includes chairman and chief
executive officer for Times Mirror Magazines, which include
"Yachting," "Salt Water Sportsman" and "Field & Stream"'

designed to make your marine life a little easier.
The following pages categorize names, and

overstocked and used nautical merchandise, dive gear, spare parts, engines,
