Proposed boating

legislation expected

from workshop
BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
waterfront News Writer
There should be no shortage of ideas at a brainstorming
session to draft proposed legislation on hurricane-related
issues affecting the state's boaters and its boating industry.
The workshop has received so much interest, organizers
have had to move it to bigger quarters.
"We're expecting a good turnout," said Joe Lewis, pres-
ident of the Marine Industries Association of Florida and
owner of the Mount Dora Boating Center, a facility with 96
wet slips and 140 dry slips in Mount Dora.
The association will host the public workshop, 10 a.m.
on Friday, Feb. 3 at the Renaissance Orlando Hotel Airport,
at 5445 Forbes Place in Orlando. Reservations are strongly
suggested.
The session will deal with derelict vessels and a variety
of other storm-related problems such as insurance, boat stor-
age, liability, litigation and obtaining bank loans to rebuild
damaged marinas.
Organizers are seeking input from government officials,
boaters, the media and the boating industry, said David Ray,
the association's executive vice president.
The free event is a first for the group, which has its
offices in Miami and oversees 12 regional associations

The workshop was initially booked at another hotel in
Orlando. Strong interest led to the need for a larger confer-
ence room elsewhere, Ray said.
Because of Orlando's central location, organizers said
they hope to draw participants from around the state.
The workshop follows a study on hurricane damages

to the boating industry conducted last year by the Florida
House of Representatives. The report was prompted by
the MIAF
'The study confirmed what issues are already out there,"
Lewis said. "Now what we need to do is look at each issue to
figure out what is the best way to solve these problems."

Boat Show aims to be family friendly by letting kids attend free

BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
The 65th Miami International Boat Show & Strictly
Sail is being made more affordable and accessible, with low-
ered admission for children and a new shuttle service.
Some 150,000 visitors are expected to attend this year's
show, running Thursday, Feb. 16 to Monday, Feb. 20. Under
a new pricing policy, kids ages 12 and younger will be
admitted free. Teens ages 13 to 15 years old will be charged
$6 per day.
The change is meant to make the experience more fam-
ily friendly, said Jodi Paradise, a show spokesperson.
In the past, youngsters ages 6 to 12 paid $4. Kids ages
13 and older were charged the full adult fee. Children ages
5 and younger always got in free.
There's also a new park and ride service at the
American Airlines Arena in downtown Miami. The cost of
$10 per vehicle includes parking and round-trip shuttle
buses to all boat show locations.
More than 2,600 exhibitors are expected to be at the
show's three sites: the Miami Beach Convention Center, the
Sea Isle Marina & Yachting Center, and Miamarina at
Bayside Marketplace.
The convention center will have an array of displays,
seminars and activities. The event is produced by the
National Marine Manufacturers Association.
Both marinas in downtown Miami will feature in-water

Miamarina. The shows are produced by Sail America, a sail-
ing industry trade association in cooperation with the
NMMA.
"It's the show of shows for exhibitors who want to
launch new products," Paradise said. "It's great for con-
sumers too because it's where they can get the best deals."
The boat show and Strictly Sail draw visitors from
around the world. In 2005, the event generated more than
$817 million in gross sales and wages for the State of Florida.
But the buzz doesn't end when the event leaves town. The
aftereffects benefit many local businesses and organizations.

will have a booth in the convention center, marking their

"We get many new customers from the event. People
who haven't heard of our store, they meet us for the first time."
Another booth at the convention center will be manned
by representatives from Ladies, Let's Go Fishing, a Fort
Lauderdale-based group that holds fishing clinics and trips
for women.
"We're a niche organization," said Lee Lavery, a Dania
Beach resident and president of the group's South Florida
chapter. "It gives us incredible exposure."
Of course, the event isn't all work and no play. One of
her favorite spots is the big game fishing area, said Lavery,
a boat owner and a fishing instructor.
"It's a very hot place," Paradise said. "It's grown by leaps
and bounds. It used to be a small area. Last year, it grew to
take up the entire space on the second level above Hall B."
The space has products, appearances by celebrity

Boating dos and don't put to etiquette expert Emily Coast

BY ARNOLD MARKOWITZ
Waterfront News Writer
Reconstruction of docks at a public launch ramp I use
brought two surprises:
One: After long delays, the job had been resumed.
Workmen in black wetsuits were removing wooden forms
from newly-poured concrete foundation piers.
Two: With three of the four docks fenced off, boaters
were being considerate of each other. Adversity was
bringing out the best in us. I suspected we had it, even if
it's seldom exhibited.
A man standing on the pier pointed to my docklines
and raised his eyebrows a body language offer to hold
the ropes while I backed my trailer down the ramp. He
didn't say anything, evidently assuming that neither of us
would understand the other's spoken language.
"Thanks. Gracias," I said. He nodded and smiled and
tied the lines off. Guessing that he was waiting for a part-
ner to bring their boat to the ramp, I pulled mine to the far
end of the dock. All my stuff already was aboard, so I did-
n't keep anyone waiting.
Please, no medals for being nice. I was in a good
mood because this was at Pelican Harbor on the 79th
Street Causeway, near home, so I didn't need 1-95, which
usually gives me a mean, vengeful attitude. It was on a
Monday, so the place wasn't overcrowded a crucial
patience factor.
Anyway, I guess I know good launch ramp manners
when I see them, and I know what makes me mad, but I've
been in Miami too long to hold myself out as a gent in the
know on this topic. You can't necessarily figure out what
to do by watching others.
I decided to ask the experts, without much luck. Dear
Abby advised me to seek professional counseling, but my
expense account doesn't cover that.
So I thought up society sea mistress Emily Coast,
arbiter of yachting etiquette, to advise us all about correct
behavior at busy launching ramps, especially on weekends
when everything's backed up and tempers are growing
short.
"Do as you would at a cocktail reception on a grand
yacht," she said. "A waiter in an officer's uniform, with a

tray of delicious hors d'oeuvres, is a delightful pleasantry.
Serve stone crab morsels, which are so very appropriate,
to the people who are waiting their turns. A small band of
musicians performing sea standards like, "Yo Ho Ho and
a Bottle of Rum" will put everyone in a happy rmod."
I needed something a little more practical. For exam-
ple, what do you do when the guy ahead of you launches
his boat, ties up directly in your way and carries his stuff
from his truck to his boat, one item at a time? And how
about the one who stops his vehicle and trailer crossways
in front of the ramp, blocking the equivalent of three
launch lanes?
"They do that in Miami?" Emily Coast asked.
Sure, I said. Almost all the time.
"Belay the hors d'oeuvres. Kick their stinkin' butts,"
Emily said.
Shocked, I resolved to pose as an expert myself, with
my own do-don't list. Here it is.

Before leaving home:
Make sure your boat batteries are fully charged.
Attach a garden hose to the engine and start it up with the
water running. You'll have an awful time getting a jump-
start at the docks, and by the time you get the boat back
out of the water, everyone's sympathy will turn to scorn.
You'll deserve it, too.
Arriving at the marina:
Tow your rig to where you won't block a driving lane,
washdown station, parking spaces or the ramp itself. Do
all your pre-launch boat preps there insert the drain
plug, remove the tie-down strap, put your fishing tackle,
ice, bait and food aboard the boat. Unlock the engine tilt.
Squeeze the fuel bulb. Turn on the battery switch. If you
use fenders, set them now. Don't make anyone wait while
you do that on the ramp or at the dock.
Launching:
Approach the ramp knowing which dock you're going
to and making sure nobody else is aiming there already.
Line up so you can back down parallel to the dock, at a
distance shorter than the length of your dock lines. When
you're far enough down the ramp to un-clip the winch
hook, stop, set your brakes and make sure your partner has
hold of the ropes. If you usually go out alone, they should
be extra long 30 feet is usually enough so you can
tie off at least the.bowline before sliding the boat into the
water.
On the water:
If you're alone, pull your boat to the far end of the
dock and tie up. Walk quickly back to your vehicle to get
it off the ramp and park. Don't run.
If there are two or more of you, one should move the
vehicle, clearing ramp space for the next boat. The other
should pull the boat to the far end of the dock, same rea-
son. If that's you, climb aboard and start the engine so
you'll be able to leave the dock as soon as the car driver

Tournament now in a flurry after October's hurricane fury

BY ARNOLD MARKOWITZ
Waterfront News Writer
When forces for good in the
,. community are recognized, what
master of ceremonies dares ask
Hurricane Wilma to take a bow?
None yet, but Kitty McGowan
may be the first to publicly salute
the scourge of October '05 for forc-
ing cancellation of the Fort
Lauderdale Billfish Tournament,
W which McGowan manages.
Arnold Markowitz Instead of waiting until next
November, the traditional time, McGowan and her board of
directors rescheduled the tournament for Feb. 8-12 at the Las
Olas City Marina in Fort Lauderdale.
The switch to February has revealed what looks like a
lining of bright, shiny silver behind the dark memory of entry
fees refunded, reservations cancelled, sponsor promotions
called off and thousands of dollars lost.
Captains and competitors are delighted with February,
says McGowan. It doesn't seem too ambitious to hope for the
90 to 100 boat entries she had expected in November.
'The fishing's been really great lately," she said in a mid-
January interview. "We could have an even better tournament
than in November. I'm hoping in February it'll be more
attractive to the tourists. It's really very cold up north in
February, and this would be a good opportunity for people to
come down.
"We're going to keep it in February now, at least until we
see how it goes."

Here's Tim Maddock, with his first sailfish on his dad's
first boat, in the Fort Lauderdale Billfish Tournament
sometime in the early 1980s. The men on the right are
Cliff Maddock (wearing cap) and Mike Massey. Little
Tim grew up to become a tournament champion. He's
entered the Fort Lauderdale event again.
Another idea that looks like a winner is a sub-tourna-
ment called One-Day Slam, which opens the competition to
teams that might not have the time or money needed to enter
a big-time three-day event.
McGowan said that before adding that to the '04 tourna-
ment, she checked with other billfish tournaments and found
none of them doing it. The first time, 22 boats were entered.
Greg Haskin of Pembroke Pines won the billfish division's
$1,080 first prize on his boat KeepinItReel. And he did it with

only two sailfish releases.
The slam is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11. The reason-
ing behind it resonates with every angler who envies those
able to afford big yachts, hired captains and mates and high
entry fees. The basic three-day entry is $695 per boat with
two registered anglers. The highest paying sub-tournaments
cost $4,000 and $3,500.
Who among us hasn't looked at big-money tournament
winner boards and thought: I could be up there, if only I had
enough free time....If only I had a lot of money... If only
whatever.
A four-angler tear and its boat can get into the One-Day
Slam for an entry fee of $395. A four-way split makes it
$98.75 per person. Fuel and bait aren't cheap but the price of
one day's worth, divided four ways, isn't extravagant.
"We talked to the anglers," McGowan said. "It's very
expensive to fish a tournament, between the costs of boat,
fuel, bait and time. Time has become the most precious com-
modity to some people. They can't commit to a three-day
tournament.
"If you can become part of a big event like this is, with
a commitment to one day, it's a natural. They compete
against each other. They don't have to compete against the
quasi-professional anglers who fish tournaments on a regular
basis and have teams that work together every time."
That doesn't quite make the One-Day Slam a poor man's
contest, but it does open the doors to glory for a lot more peo-
ple who think they're good enough to fish competitively
except for too many if-onlys. Haskin's two sailfish in '04
won him $1,080. This year, the prize will be $5,000 if 30
boats are entered.
The one-day competition is one of five tournaments
within the greater tournament. The Classic tournament, with
the $695 entry, has a first-place prize guarantee of $10,000.
Then there's a separate Big Boat Challenge for inboards,
with a $4,000 entry fee and $80,550 prize pool if 30 boats are
entered. There's a Powerboat Challenge for open outboards
with a $3,500 entry fee and a prize pool of $71,400 based on
30 entries.
The flyfishing competition has a $495 entry fee per boat
with two fly casters. Only three boats were in it last time and
only one contestant brought a sailfish to his boat. That was
Billy Pate, a member of the IGFA Hall of Fame.
This is being billed as the 40th anniversary tournament,

The boat has lei

the country

BY MARK ERCOLIN
Waterfront News Columnist
"Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left
the building."
When he was alive, this phrase sig-
naled to the audience that the concert was
over and Elvis Presley was gone, mean-
ing there was no reason to hang around
for an encore. Today it's a metaphor for
similar situations.
In the maritime arena, an equivalent
catch phrase might be, "Ladies and gentle-
men, the boat has left the country."
You might recall from previous
columns in this publication that maritime
liens against a vessel are often secret, and
do not require filing with any authority
before being enforced i.e., the federal
arrest of a vessel. Such liens can follow a
vessel virtually forever regardless of a
change in ownership.
But should a vessel with a lien leave
the country, someone entitled to the lien
may find future enforcement difficult.
You might assume that maritime law,
being international in nature, would give
deference to another country's maritime
authority over a vessel. Unfortunately,
while maritime liens tend to be handled
similarly in many nations, the fact that you
may have a viable lien in the U.S. should
not give you comfort if the vessel leaves for
somewhere else.
Why? Because enforcement usually
requires the actual arrest of the vessel, or
some agreement between parties to post
a bond against the boat, so the matter can
be put before the appropriate court in
that jurisdiction.
If a vessel is in a different country
from where the maritime lien occurred,
there is a good chance that the authorities
in that venue may have no interest in
enforcing a foreign lien. There could also
be new liens on the vessel in its new loca-

IT)
I~u~n'C2

tion that would take precedence over older
liens incurred elsewhere.
Generally speaking, newer maritime
liens usually take precedence over older
maritime liens, and "local" liens usually
have precedence over those from anoth-
er country.
Considering the above, there's only
a few viable options for the lien holder
of a vessel that has left the country. One
is to hire counsel in the country where
the boat is presently.located and attempt
to enforce the U.S. lien in the foreign
venue a move that can prove frustrat-
ing and expensive.
Another option is for the lien holder to
wait for the vessel to return to U.S. jurisdic-
tion, which could be a while, if ever.
And finally, there are rather unique
and sometimes legally troubling methods
to encourage the return of the vessel to
U.S. jurisdiction.
For example, there's the legendary
story of the attorney who took a helicopter
into the Bering Sea and landed on the deck
of a Japanese cargo ship. Holding a com-
plaint for a maritime lien, he ordered the
captain to return to Alaska. Although it is
said that this ploy worked, technically the
attorney had no authority to make such a
demand on the vessel and its crew, and it
remains a wonder that this lawyer was not
made to join the other sharks in the sea.
In the same vein, there are also people
who can be hired to "repossess" boats
while in foreign ports. But such illegal
expeditions can lead to international inci-
dents that could end in jail time, or worse.
The safest way to prevent this scenario
is for companies to perform thorough
checks on the payment and credit histories
of potentially risky customers. They might
also consider requiring a sizable up front

Companies can mitigate potential
liens by requiring upfront deposits

deposit to help mitigate the risks of loss.
After all, just because a maritime lien can possibly last
forever doesn't mean it is always reasonably collectable.
Remember, many of us believe that Elvis lives forever too!

based law firm Maltzman Foreman, PA. The informa-
tion in this column is summary in nature and should not

Busy launching ramps no place for boater discourtesy

[ returns. Wait for your partner at the far end. If there's a
courtesy dock, take the boat there to meet the other guy.
That's what it's for. Other boats are heading that way too,
so don't tie up but stand off until your partner's almost
there. When he arrives, take him aboard and go.
Coming back:
It's a common Miami discourtesy for one person to
get off the boat with the vehicle driver and stand on the
ramp, "reserving" that spot until the driver arrives. Don't
do this. Other drivers are ready with their cars and trailers,
and if your driver isn't there already, you are improperly
in someone else's way.
If it's late in the day at a busy ramp, there's likely to
be more confusion boats coming in and nighttime
fishermen going out than there was in the morning. It's
a time for extra patience, courtesy and understanding.
Two of you may innocently be backing toward the same
dock at the same time. Stop and agree on who will go
first. If you don't speak the same language, hand signals
will do nicely.
If yours is a two-person crew, and if there's a courtesy
dock, drop the car driver there. If you're it, go ashore with
two handfuls of stuff to reduce unloading (and crowding)
time at the ramp dock. The one running the boat should

move it now to the end of the launch dock to wait until the
car and trailer begin backing down. Then move the boat
into position for hauling out of the water.
An electric winch on the trailer should make it
unnecessary to pile coolers, bait buckets and stuff on the
dock where someone might trip over it. If you're crank-
ing the winch by hand, only remove the heaviest stuff
now. The idea is to get the boat onto the trailer and out of
there quickly.
If you stop at a washdown, one of you can shift the rest
of your gear to the vehicle while the other hoses the boat.
I almost forgot. What do you do about those folks tak-
ing up dock space while they carry their stuff to or from
their car? And that one who stops his rig crossways in
front of the ramps?
In the first case, pick up a cooler or something and
join their relay. If they don't figure it out right away, at
least they'll be grateful for your help.
In the second case, walk up to the driver and mention
politely that you need to get through there, and would he
mind pulling forward?
Assume that he's just preoccupied, not being purpose-
ly mean.
If you're wrong about that, consider taking Emily
Coast's advice and kick his stinkin' butt.
Just don't tell him who put you up to it.

Tournament's One Day Slam a winner for

which was started in 1965 as a twice-annual contest one
to mark the beginning of tourist season and another to mark
its end. It's been done once a year, in November, since 1999.
In days of old, a popular feature was the Miss Billfish
Tournament beauty contest, whose winners looked pretty
good in bikinis. That's back, at least for this year, as a
retro feature.
Other than that, the tournament is as up-to-date as any.
It's a qualifying event for the World billfish Series. Catch and
release is standard since 1986. Circle hooks, proven to reduce
life-threatening injuries to released fish, have been required
since 2002.
There's an emphasis on doing well by doing good: half
the bar proceeds and a varying percentage of other tourna-
ment income is donated to Rotary Clubs International, which
uses the money to take underprivileged children fishing -
about 40 at a time, three or four times a year.
After expenses, the rest of the money goes into the prize
pools, which as they rise from year to year, make tournaments
attractive to, the intensely competitive people who fish in

them. Success brings in new sponsors, who jack up the prizes.
McGowan, in her seventh year as manager, has studied
the history back to Saturday, Oct. 29, 1965, when 43 boats
and 64 anglers caught 47 billfish. Warren Schafer, with Fred
Harvey as captain, was the big winner with a 189-pound
blue marlin. It was supposed to be a two-day tournament,
but small craft warnings chickened out day two. No hurri-
cane stopped the festivities until Oct. 24, 2005, two weeks
before the tournament.
Five days later, the tournament committee called it off.
The marina was useable, but the same hurricane had forced

time-pressed anglers
postponement of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat
Show, which had the marina first. There wasn't time to get it
ready for the billfish tournament.
On reflection, McGowan sees more reasons than iffy
weather for taking the tournament out of November:
"A lot of our anglers are sportsmen. In the fall there's the
opening of deer and duck seasons. There's football,
NASCAR and the boat show. People have to make choices."
The new February scheduling gets the tournament on
and off the ocean just in time to celebrate Valentine's Day.
McGowan's betting the fishing crowd will love it.

Insurance issues to be tackled at MIAF workshop

The suggestions made at the workshop will go toward
creating proposals that the MIAF intends to submit for the
upcoming Florida Legislature session, Lewis said.
Patience Cohn, a board member of the Marine Industries
Association of South Florida, said she plans to represent the
group at the workshop.
"The best part of the meeting is that everyone can
bring the problems and challenges they face from all
over the state," she said. "This forum gives us an oppor-
tunity to understand everyone's issues and how we can
address them."
The workshop will allow the boating industry to speak
as one voice, Cohn said.
The MIAF has compiled a list of topics to be discussed.
These include the availability and affordability of insurance;
bank loans to rebuild; costs incurred for rebuilding and
cleanup; funding for the removal of derelict vessels; litigation
costs; vessel removal and storage, and protection for
anchored vessels during hurricanes.
Input will also be sought on abandoned vessels, con-
tracts, evacuations, liability, anchoring regulations and the
removal of vessels when a hurricane watch or warning has
been issued.
The last topic on vessel removal has created major
headaches for the industry.

"It's a major problem," Ray said. "Typically, before
Hurricane Andrew, individual marinas could have rules
requiring people to move their boats to safe harbor."
After Andrew struck in 1992, legislation was passed two
years later that prevented marinas from forcing the removal
of boats when a hurricane watch or warning is declared.
Another topic of concern is drafting legislation that will
provide more funding to marinas not reimbursed for insur-
ance losses, Cohn said.
"Marina facilities are having a very big challenge obtain-
ing insurance," Cohn said.
More state funding is also being sought for the Florida
Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to remove
derelict vessels.
"The funding is nonexistent," said John Sprague, legisla-
tive chair for the MIAF and director of governmental affairs
for the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County.
"Now, either the vessels sit there or the cities have to remove
them at taxpayer expense."
Tackling derelict vessels poses many different chal-
lenges, Lewis said.
"You may have a situation where a boat had been
anchored out or docked at a marina," he said. "The boat sinks
and the owner walks away. What happens? Who pays to have
that vessel removed? Or an uninsured boat in the water is
blown by a storm into a marina, causing damages to the facil-
ity. Again, who pays?"

The impact of hurricanes Katrina and Wilma have
heightened the need to solve these and other issues. Future
storms can only make things worse if no action is taken,
organizers say.
If the situation continues unchecked, the state could lose
more marinas.
"We're losing slips right and left" Lewis said. "There are
marina owners who have been struck by a hurricane and are
looking at millions of dollars in repairs, or millions of dollars
to sell the property to a developer."
One issue the MIAF won't back is requiring boat own-
ers to have insurance on their vessels, now optional under
state law.
"We try to keep boating as affordable as we possibly
can," Lewis said. "It would be nice if everyone had the
forethought to take out insurance. But, from the industry
standpoint, requiring insurance isn't the answer. It's
more a matter of affordable insurance, for boaters and
marina owners."
Insurers know that if the boats are left in marinas,
chances are the docks will be destroyed, he said.
"Insurance for docks have shot to the moon. It's very
expensive and in a lot of cases you can't get it."
For more information and to make reservations, contact
the MIAF at 305-663-1911, or send email to miaf@att.net.

Artists, whales journey through California's Mendocino County

BY TERRY CONWAY
Waterfront News Writer
Perched on high ocean bluffs, the picturesque artist
town of Mendocino dates back to the California Gold Rush
days when logging and fishing was king.
It's about a four-hour drive from San Francisco along
Shoreline Highway 1, through sprawling vineyards into
towering redwood forests, past dairy, heather and pea farms,
winding up and down rocky coves and slipping comfortably
through small villages.
Foamy ocean surf crashes against sea rocks where sea
lions and pelicans gather. White crescent-shaped beaches
edge emerald coves, providing access for surf fishing, scuba
diving, kayaking and surfing.
The coast also is one of the last bastions of diving for
abalone and draws great numbers of divers willing to brave
the frigid coastal waters.

What to see
The migration of the California gray whale from
November through December is a magical event. These fas-
cinating mammals pass the coast on their journey south,
where they give birth in the warm waters of Baja California,
Mexico. They pass by again on their return trip north, begin-
ning in February and continuing through April when the
adult whales bring their young close to shore. At times, the
whales can be seen scraping their barnacles on the rocks or
rolling in the tide.
SThe region drew artists in the 1950s and continues
today. Mendocino and Fort Bragg claim to have more work-
ing artists per capital than any town in the country. Galleries
hold evening showings and receptions. It's a haven for land-
scape painters, but artists work in every media here. At the
Highlight Gallery on Mendocino's Main Street, three floors
are filled with woodwork, furniture, weavings, ceramics,
paintings and sculpture.
The town's Victorian and Cape Cod-style homes-were
built in the 1800s by Maine loggers and fisherman who set-
tfled in the region. The area's rustic, dramatic beauty has also

made it a favorite location for Hollywood filmmakers since
the 1940s. The town's screen credits include Oscar winner
"Johnny Belinda" (1948) and "East of Eden" (1955), James
Dean's breakthrough film. Fans of the television series
"Murder, She Wrote" (1984-1995) may recognize the home
at 45110 Little Lake St. as the Cabot Cove home of sleuth
Jessica Fletcher.
An inland drive takes you by rolling hills that glow
golden in the sun. You pass pear and apple orchards,
then vineyards as far as the eye can see. Small but com-
mercial-quality wineries took off in the 1960s. Today,
more than 40 family-owned wineries cover 16,000 acres
in the county.

Dining
Mendocino's restaurants feature meals that are on the
forefront of California cuisine. The Moosse Caf6 offers a
delicious menu with fresh seafood and produce elegantly

prepared. Try the tasty Calda Verde, a bowl of steaming
broth with chicken, shrimp or vegetables.
955 Uldah is a friendly restaurant set back from the street
in what once was an artist's studio. Chef Jamie Griffiths, who
runs the restaurant with his wife, Peggy, has created a menu
that suits all appetites and tastes, with pastas, salads, light
meals, wonderful seafood, lamb and duck creations.
In and around Mendocino Village the B&Bs have their
own official highway markers with a little icon of a house
- to help travelers find their way. The 10-room Joshua
Grindle Inn, built in 1879, has early American and Shaker
antiques and fireplaces. Another equally charming inn is the
John Dougherty House, a historic, six-room 1867 saltbox
with some excellent ocean views. It features early American
antiques, wood burning stoves, stenciled walls and one of
Mendocino's finest English gardens. Outside the village is
the Mendocino Farmhouse, a cozy five-room inn in a
secluded redwood forest.
These are just some of the gems you'll find on a care-
free drive along 50 miles of spectacular northern California
coastline where a feeling of timelessness pervades.

Dade Marine ResourceGUide 2006

Recreational boaters need certain informa-
tion where, for example, to renew your fishing
license ... how to find a boating class close to
home ... a specific day's tide tables, or the name
of a restaurant that can accommodate your 32-
foot cabin cruiser.
The Waterfront News Marine Resource
Guide, in this handy pullout format, has been
designed to make your marine life a little easier.
The following pages categorize names, and
websites when applicable of private and govern-
mental agencies related to boating, fishing and
nautical recreation in general.
