Jet boats to superyachts star at Fort Lauderdale boat show

BY HANNON DEUTSCH
Waterfront News Writer
If your calendar lists anything other than "boat show"
from Oct. 27-31, cancel those plans right now.
It's time once again for the 46thAnnual Fort Lauderdale
International Boat Show. If you still have your admission
ticket from years past, skip down a few paragraphs. If not,
here's what you need to know about one of the largest and
most comprehensive boat shows around.
As usual, this amusement park for marine lovers will
cover six sites on land and water, and feature more than $1.6
billion worth of boats, yachts, superyachts, sailing yachts,
electronics, engines and a cornucopia of accessories from
every major manufacturer worldwide.
The show encompasses 3 million square feet of space
(land and water), all connected by the Show Transportation
Network. Besides having the entire industry at one's dispos-
al, this show is so attractive to so many people because Fort
Lauderdale has 165 miles of navigable waterways not to
mention the area's proximity to popular boating locations in
the Caribbean.
The epicenter of the show is located at the Radisson
Bahia Mar Beach Resort And Yachting Center, 801
Seabreeze Blvd., Fort Lauderdale.
Everything from family cruisers to sport fishing boats to
superyachts will line the docks. If your wallet matches your
imagination, visit the Hall Of Fame Marina. Superyachts,
brokerage boats and exotic cars will be the star attractions at
this site, which extends northward from the end of F-Dock
at Bahia Mar.

Phil Friedman admits he's not saving lives. But by
doling out free advice, he is perhaps putting a bit of sani-
ty back into the upturned lives of boat owners affected by
Hurricane Katrina.
Friedman and three of his employees give out informa-
tion and referrals through a hurricane help center set up at his
company, the Port Royal Group Inc. in Fort Lauderdale.
Within its first 10 days of operation, the toll-free phone
line received about 150 calls, said Friedman, president of the
25-year-old firm, which acts as technical and business con-
sultants to yacht owners, buyers and sellers.
The majority of callers have damaged vessels and want
to know how to get their claims started and what to do while
waiting for an insurance adjuster. Many are having difficul-
ties with insurance claims and problems arranging for time-
ly salvage and repair of their hurricane-damaged vessels,
Friedman said.
"You would be surprised how stuck they are,' he said.
"They don't seem to be able to move forward to get done
what they need to do.
"Sometimes they just need to know they can go ahead
and do things. They don't have to sit there and wait for an
insurance adjuster to show up."
Friedman initially started the free help line last year in
response to the spate of hurricanes that blew through Florida.
Katrina led him to reactivate the service on Sept. 1, he said.

Orleans after Hurricane Katrina hit.
"As a business, we deal with yacht owners, buyers and
sellers," Friedman said. "Generally, we don't have clients
with boats under 55 feet long."
The hurricane help center provides information at no
charge to owners of all boats, regardless of size, he said.
"We tell them how to document their damages,

approach boat yards and how to navigate, in general, through
the field of initiating and pursuing claims," Friedman said.
"Whatever we can answer," he said. 'I have 30-plus
years in the marine industry in repair and refit. Very often, we
can explain what they have to do, or who they have to call."
Friedman and his staff have an organized database of
contacts in the affected areas of the gulf states, allowing them
to give quick information.
"We have lists of boatyards in Louisiana and Mississippi
that are still operating, that can offer repairs and cost esti-
mates so people can start the claims process," he said.
The database also contains contact information on
marine surveyors and insurers, he said.
The help center is manned during regular office hours, 8
a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. People can leave
messages and their calls will be returned within 24 hours,
Friedman said.
The service will remain for as long as it's needed.
"I got a call from someone from Mississippi with a dam-
aged boat this morning who was having difficulties with their
insurance company," he said. "I walked him through the pro-
cedures of what steps to take.
"We spend a little time on the telephone and we feel we
are doing some good," he said. "If nothing else, they go away
with a list of steps."

Center call 888-523-9770; www.portroyalgroup.com.

New video aims to fill jobs in Broward's marine industry

BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
A new video expected to be completed this winter will
give Broward County residents a glimpse into marine
industry-related jobs.
The project is a joint effort between the Marine
Industries Association of South Florida and WorkForce
One, which formed an alliance last year. The video and a
recent job fair are the latest efforts by both groups to
boost interest among, job seekers in Broward's boating
businesses, a major economic force in the county.
The MIASF is producing the DVD. Compiling and
distribution is being funded with a state grant administered
by WorkForce One, a county employment service.
"This is a tool that will help serve both of our cus-
tomers, which are Broward County businesses and job
seekers," said Kelly Allen, marketing manager for
WorkForce One, which is funded by federal and state dol-
lars, to match job seekers with employers in many fields,
including the marine industry.
The agency also provides training programs, database
listings of available jobs and conducts interviews for
employers at its three offices in Pompano Beach, Fort
Lauderdale and Hollywood.
The DVD is the latest project that WorkForce One is
funding to help team marine businesses with prospective
workers, Allen said. Once it's finished, free copies will be

made available to technical schools, high schools, colleges
and job fairs.
"Wherever we can broadcast the word," said Donna
McBride, who is employed by the MIASF as its WorkForce
One coordinator.
"A lot of people see the boats go up and down the
Intracoastal and they're not familiar with the industry,"
McBride said. "The idea is to get the word out, not just
about working aboard the boats, but all of the supporting
land-based businesses that contribute to keeping those ves-

sels afloat, whether it's working on small pleasure craft or
on mega yachts."
One of the DVD's objectives is to show the latticework
between companies.
"I know women who started as stewardesses on large
yachts, then went on to open their own crew placement
agencies," McBride said.
Producing the video doesn't just help prospective job
seekers. Promoting and recruiting people to fill positions in
the marine industry benefits Broward's overall economy.
The number of marine industry jobs countywide is expected
to grow at least 13.5 percent, possibly more, McBride said.
"We've lost a lot of our workforce by people retiring,
and haven't replenished it," she said.
The marine industry has a tremendous economic
impact on South Florida's economy, about $8.8 billion a
year. The industry generates some 109,000 jobs in Broward
alone, according to a study conducted by the Broward
Alliance and the MIASF in 2000.
"Without qualified employees, these companies will go
-elsewhere," McBride said.
To prevent that from happening, the MIASF renewed
its agreement in July with WorkForce One for the second
consecutive year to create a porthole of marine industry-
related jobs in Broward County.
On behalf of the MIASF, McBride seeks out local

Fish back in business at hurricane-damaged Flamingo

Flimb

BY ARNOLD MARKOWITZ
Waterfront News Writer
If comfort and convenience are very important, cross
Flamingo off your list of fishing destinations for the near
future but if fishing rates first and everything else is last,
don't let hurricane wrack and ruin stop you. The road to
Flamingo and launching ramps are open for day use only
now, 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and even though nothing else is
back in business, the fish are.
Early after-hurricane reports from backcountry
guides describe good catches of snook, redfish and tar-
pon. Flamingo-area waters are routinely good for sea
trout, too. Bring a cutting board or plan to finish your fish
back home, because even the fish-cleaning stations may
still be off limits.
No reports have been received about the freshwater
ponds and lakes along the park road, but fishing is likely to
be back to normal there as well.

take you, is one of Everglades National Park's two gateways
to Florida Bay and the Ten Thousand Islands (the other is at
Everglades City/Chokoloskee). It is about an hour's drive
from the Florida Turnpike's southern end at Homestead.
Due to wind, tidal surge and the roiling of shallow bot-
toms, a lot of things are liable to look different once you
leave the ramp at Flamingo. Expect to find shallows where
there used to-be depths and vice versa, small mangrove
openings made large and vice versa. Channel markers may
be missing or dark instead of lit.
Katrina's eye went through there about 1 a.m. on Aug.
26. By morning on Sept. 1, when Bob Steams drove down

rental cabins. No fuel, no ice, no
eats or drinks, no bait, no boat
tours, no camping. Most of the
facilities were either damaged or ,
made inaccessible by hazards.
Here's a report Steams e-
mailed to a friend:
"All of the buildings were
affected at least their lower
floors by high water; although "
there was little visible structural
damage from wind.
Judging from fading water- Arnold Markowitz
marks I saw on some trees, floodwaters reached a
depth of about three feet in the parking lots. That's how
the houseboats got shoved up on the seawall and some
small boats were damaged.
"Both ramps and the piers that support them are
okay. Many navigation markers are damaged or missing
in Florida Bay, the lower west coast, and possibly
Whitewater Bay. There are reports of sunken boats and
other debris in Florida Bay, probably blown over from
the Keys. There is likely also some debris from sunken
trees in Whitewater Bay."
Steams said park staff was hoping to reopen the launch
ramps soon, which they did on Sept. 11.
"But it will be many months before the buildings
are completely usable again, even though there are a lot
of people hard at work down there," Steams wrote.
Before heading for Flamingo, fishers should try phon-
ing the visitor center there at 941-695-2945 to find out if
any other facilities have been reopened. The park head-
quarters number,. 305-242-7700, is answered from 8:30
a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fishing for dolphin is no dilemma when you're with a pro

BY ARNOLD MARKOWITZ
Waterfront News Writer
Want dolphin? Better hurry. They're probably still in
blue water off southeast Florida, but the price of fuel is
going up, with a rise in chartering prices sure to follow.
Speed of wind and height of seas are rising seasonally, so
by the end of October, you might not like it out there even
if you can afford gas.
"Four-knot current, 25 knot wind. Next thing you know,
the seas are eight to 10 feet. The swells look like elephants
lined up."
Bon mot! Wish I'd said that. Capt. Steven Wenger did. He
is a hybrid charter/commercial fishcatcher on whose boat E
Fish N Sea I fished for dolphin in August with Joe Oglesby
and Joe's son-in-law, Ryan Welmaker.
Wenger's name isn't celebrated in song or even story
(until now), yet he is well known by all who know him very
well. Capt. Jim Hanson, a North Miami fishmonger to whom
Wenger is a purveyor, recommended him to Joe.
His boat's a 26-foot open fisherman with a T-top and lots
of deck space, just what a commercial catcher needs. With a
goal of adding more sport charters to his trade, he's working
on a new 32-footer with a small cabin, bunk and enclosed
head. Miss Tra Sea, named in Mrs. Wenger's honor, may be
ready by mid-November.
Joe, my bass fishing buddy, ordinarily regards saltwater
as foreign matter. His excuse for the trip was that his son-in-
law had an urge for the bounding main while visiting from
Milwaukee, where saltwater is outlawed for fear it might spoil
the beer.

Ryan Welmaker, on the Gulf Stream for the first time,
hoists a school dolphin he caught on Capt. Steve
Wenger's charter boat E Fish N Sea.
Joe engaged Wenger for a day ($500 in mid-August,
surely more by now), and invited me along.
I took a fly iod, a 10-weight with a large-capacity reel,
anticipating big dolphin. Wenger said only one other sport had
ever fished a fly rod on his boat. That one hooked a sailfish
which stripped his line to the end.
A big dolphin did the same to me once when I had a nine-
weight rod, thus the 10 this time. It would turn out to be exces-
sive, and I would still turn out glad I brought it.

Wait a little, that part's coming.
We began with spinning tackle, baiting with live sardines
for kingfish. Nothing happened, so Wenger ordered lines in
and commenced a search for dolphin.
Thumbs up to that. A little impatience is a good thing off-
shore. If you stubbornly repeat the same drift, hour after hour
without action, you go home smelling something like skunk,
nothing like fish.
It was a good day to hunt dolphin, with gentle inky-blue
seas we could have hiked upon in pontoon shoes.
Wenger's search technique isn't fancy. Like everyone
else he looks for weedline, debris fields, flocks of birds that
act as if they've found something. He asks all hands to scan
for signs.
The birds we saw were loners and couples, not flocks.
Flying fish are good clue-givers, but one at a time didn't tell
us much. We found no weed line, only a few scrawny patch-
es you wouldn't bother to rake up in your yard.
Wenger did locate sparse debris, just isolated pieces
where I only half-expected schools of dolphin, yet there they
were. One find was a chunk of decaying wood, floating end-
up. Another was the remains of a fish trap three balls of
Styrofoam, tangled rope and a flagstick with a rag on it.
All the dolphin were juniors, just above and just below
the 20-inch minimum keeping size, but they were plentiful.
Wenger had rigged our lines with small treble hooks, about
size four, and now he stuck on the baits small sardines
hooked from beneath, next to the pectoral fins.
I'd guess only Wenger does that, but stating it as a fact
would invite hundreds of calls and e-mails saying everybody
does it
Joe hooked the first dolphin, which Wenger told him to
hold at the stem to keep the rest of the school rallying around.
As soon as Ryan hooked one, Joe hauled his aboard. When I
got one, up came Ryan's. Everyone who fishes for dolphin
knows that trick. If your first time's coming, you'll learn it.
Pretty soon, the dolphin school was joined by bar jacks,
quick little guys who nipped at our baits. I caught a few on fly,
a Lefty's deceiver in red and white, but the dolphin I wanted
weren't interested in it.
Bar jacks were a nuisance this day. Wenger told me later
they're great first catches for little kids and on a bad day they

The phenomenon of

the dockominium

BY MARK ERCOLIN
Waterfront News Columnist
It was in Ms. Zemmel's third grade
class at South Beach Elementary when I
first heard the term "condominium" (an
admission that probably dates me terribly).
S The phenomenon of the condominium
had just recently arrived to Miami Beach
and Ms. Zemmel was doing a comparative
civic lesson explaining how the concept of
the "condo apartment" had originated in
Scandinavia. She explained that this was
an innovative solution for providing hous-
ing in areas where there was high popula-
tion and limited land space.
Even as an 8-year-old, I thought it was
a bit odd that people would be willing to
actually buy a dwelling when they really
didn't own the walls next to it, the floor
above it, or the spaces below it, but I did
accept it as a reality.
Fortunately, laws have been developed
over the years that attempt to address the
conflicts that can occur in condo owner-
ship. Even so, I have observed times when
there are breakdowns between condo
neighbors, and existing laws are not
always helpful in resolving disputes. But
condominiums will remain for some time
to come in South Florida and other places
with high population density and limited
land resources.
And now, following in those same foot-
steps comes the newest concept in commu-
nal ownership: The "dockominium!"
Mostly in the past, slip ownership in a
communal arrangement occurred in con-
junction with waterfront property owner-
ship. However, the present dockominium
concept, which began to take root in the
late 1990s, leans more towards owning a
dock slip off of some communally operat-
ed property.
Crudely put, in such an arrangement
the potential purchaser is essentially buy-

ing an easement to what would otherwise
be a riparian right to use waterfront from
the adjacent landowner.
Presently it appears most of these
dockominium plans have the purchaser
buy the slip (which in Broward can be a
price approaching or even more than some
properties), then afterward the new owner
is required to pay dues and upkeep costs
for the slip and adjacent community areas.
It seems that these dockominium commu-
nities are attempting to mimic the laws and
rules of condos on land.
Since the trend towards dockomini-
ums is rather new, it should be explored in
depth by any potential purchaser or
investor before a transaction takes place.
First, look at the economics of it. As
one friend of mine observed, "With all
those monthly maintenance and communi-
ty costs, it sounds like you're really just
buying the right to rent a dock."
Sit down with pen, paper, and probably
an accountant to see if my friend is correct.
Ask yourself, "How long will I have to own
a dockominium to make it worth my while
to keep a boat there rather than renting?"
Which brings up issues of insurance
and liability: What type of insurafice is
available, or reasonably needed, for some-
one who owns a dockominium slip?
Would insurance include the need for
longshoreman's liability? Moreover, if any
worker sues your community, how will
you be protected? In the reverse, if a work-
er sues you for work done or for injuries
sustained because of your slip or vessel,
how are the other owners protected?
This then brings up the intriguing
issue of maritime liens against vessels
while they are in a dockominium. There
are quite a few scenarios when an owner
could put a. vessel at risk for liens in a

Dockominium arrangement brings

up numerous contractual issues

I(i. liIll'mi tllli[.il;iM I + l
dockominium slip. But for now, I'll just consider one that I
don't have a complete answer for:
What if a slip owner fails to pay community mainte-
nance fees? Depending on the facts, an owner could be at
risk for a maritime lien.
Finally, let's return again to riparian rights. A riparian
right (the right to use and enjoy the waterfront adjacent to
your property for your private use) is not an absolute right,
and can be best described as an easement.
For example, the courts in the state of Wisconsin pre-
vented dockominiums from setting up on Lake Geneva, say-
ing that easements could not be sold separately from the
property. They apparently didn't see the community aspect
of the attached marina as a sufficient tie.

So far I have seen no similar challenges in Florida to
dockominiums. But since it is a new concept in the legal
world, it is something to watch for in the future.
If you are still interested in dockominiums, approach it
as you would any business decision you would otherwise
make. Review all economic, legal and contractual concerns,
and don't be afraid to seek professional assistance.
The modem condominium was a concept brought to us
by the Scandinavians. That chapter that I first read in third
grade also mentioned that it was a Scandinavian who invent-
ed dynamite, so be careful.
Mark Ercolin is a maritime attorney with the
Miami-based law firm Maltzman Foreman, PA. The
information in this column is summary in nature, and
should not be applied to specific cases or situations.

Boat owners must demand hurricane protocol

It's time at least to start thinking about it, unless we're
willing to laugh off the consequences of incompetence.
Where to begin? Some small-scale suggestions:
Marina operators should banish boat owners whose ill-
secured vessels veer around like loose cannons, bashing
holes in everyone else's hulls. The victims should sue the
careless for negligence.
Marina tenants should organize for mutual protection,
taking care of their own boats and banding together to secure
the vessels whose owners can't or won't take care of theirs.
Those in mooring fields must do the same.
High-rise dwellers whose windows blow out or let in
wind-blown rain at the seams should join in lawsuits against
the sub-contractors who installed the windows carelessly
and the general contractors who failed to make their subs do

the job right.
Demand a commitment to hurricane preparation and
emergency management of every candidate for public
office. Insist that local governments cooperate closely with
one another in times of crisis. Support budget priority for
emergency preparedness. Remove elected leaders who fail
to comply.
If you are the mayor of a vulnerable city, and the head
of the National Hurricane Center all but begs you to start
evacuating, do as he asks right away. Later, much later, you
can worry about getting sued by businesses over lost sales.
If you're in charge of reconstructing a Mississippi town
blown to smithereens, better get a serious building code
enacted first.
Except in a formal state of tyranny, the first purpose of
government is to protect its citizens. We can agree on that,
even expect it, but let's not hang by the neck until we get it.

New Royal Park Bridge gets raves from Palm Beach residents

BY WILLIAM R. HAWKINS
Waterfront News Writer
PALM BEACH It seems everyone, from people driv-
ing over the new $78 million Royal Park Bridge to boaters
sailing under it, are relieved work is complete.
The new bridge is the sixth in 94 years to span the Lake
Worth Inlet and Intracoastal waters between West Palm
Beach and Palm Beach. It has grown from a two-lane wood-
en structure to four lanes with a double drawbridge, ornate
lighting, winding walkways and lush landscaping.
Although major construction ended in July, final touch-
es on landscaping and lighting were recently added. The
Palm Beach Garden Club championed efforts to create lush
landscaping to soften all the new concrete.
For Palm Beach's seasonal residents soon returning for
the winter, last year's detours and traffic delays are over.
"It's wonderful how it all came out," said Carolyn
Denton, researcher for the Preservation Foundation of
Palm Beach, which was among several groups that called
for preserving some of the old bridge's historical aspects in
the new design.
The new bridge's Spanish Moorish -Mediterranean
revival design is considered to be one of the state's most
architecturally ambitious bridge projects. The objective was
to build something new while maintaining the historical char-
acter of past bridges.
Contractor Ballast Nedam, of the Netherlands, cast new
segments of the bridge on-site rather than using precast sec-
tions that could have been shipped to the site.
The Royal Park Bridge is one of three spans linking the
barrier island of Palm Beach to the mainland of downtown
West Palm Beach. It's considered the middle bridge because
it's located between the Southern Street Bridge to the south
and the Flagler Memorial Bridge to the north.
In 1911 Palm Beach land developer Cap Dick built a
wooden span to bring potential real estate buyers over the
136-acre island. He charged 25 cents a car and five cents per
passenger. In 1919, Palm Beach County bought the bridge
for $40,000 and replaced it in 1921 with a concrete structure
that collapsed shortly before it opened. That led to a tempo-
rary wooden span, replaced in 1924 by a two-lane concrete

bridge, which had a center span that would swing open to
allow boats to pass through. That bridge was the first free one
for motorists and suffered damage in the 1928 hurricane, but
:was rebuilt.
The county spent $1.5 million in 1959 to add two lanes
south of the bridge and installed two drawbridges to replace
the swing span. In 1999, the 1924 bridge was condemned
because insects were eating away its submerged wooden pil-
ings. Since the 1959 bridge was linked to the 1924 bridge, the
county had to spend $13 million in 2003 to build a new tem-
porarybridge while work took place on the new one. The old
bridge was finally demolished in late 2004. Engineers esti-
mate the new structure should be good for the next 75 years.
Today more than 25,000 cars pass over it. The span is
1,000 feet long, 100 feet across and nearly 24 feet high above
the navigation channel. The bridge tender oversees the span
openings on the hour and half hour from his tower headquar-
ters near the center of the span.
"It's a gorgeous bridge and the only thing I would have
liked to see different is that it would be higher," said Bill
Williams, a supervisor with the Florida Drawbridge
Company, which has a contract with the state to staff draw-
bridges along the Intracoastal from Jupiter into Broward

County. Williams has seven bridges under his control, from
Jupiter to the Southern Street Bridge in West Palm Beach.
"The higher a bridge is over the water, the more boat
traffic can go under it without having to open the span,"
Williams said. That saves on the equipment, maintenance
and most importantly traffic congestion.
Williams said the Royal Park Bridge is the most elabo-
rate of the spans over the Intracoastal. A final tally could
bring the project's costs to over $100 million, making it one
of the most expensive Intracoastal bridges.
"I love the new look of the bridge and it's very pedestri-
an-friendly," said condo resident Walker O'Neill. "I some-
times pick up trash on the bridge left by people even though
I can't believe why anyone would toss such stuff on that new
bridge," he said.
The bridge has ornate railings along the walkways and
down the steps on the west side. Several pedestrian overlooks
on each side of the bridge allow for gazing. The western end
also has a walkway underneath for bikers and people walk-
ing and jogging along Flagler Drive.
For biker Tom Cahill, who spends plefity of weekend
time riding in the area, the pedestrian walkway makes it eas-
ier to avoid busy cars overhead.
"They've done of good job of marking bike trails to
make it a lot safer for us," Cahill said
Ornate overhead lighting and special illumination of the
sides of the bridge make it an attractive scene at night.
There's also colorful plantings in a large median planter on
the eastside of the bridge. An adjacent pedestrian park offers
one of the better views of the bridge.
Fishing from the new bridge is popular from the shaded
area of the west side's walkway.
"I've been fishing from here for years', said Filipe Rosso
of West Palm Beach, who was pulling in a catch to add to his
collection. "This is a great spot and I feel closer to the new
bridge because I helped build it" Rosso, a tiler, laid red tile
atop the bridge tender's tower.
Pedro Rosales and his wife, Caren, prefer the Royal Park
Bridge to Flagler Memorial Bridge. "We used to go there,
but the variety of fish we catch here is greater and so are the
numbers," he said.

OCTOBER 2005

There no better tasg sh tn OCTOBER 2005

There's no better tasting fish than the one you've caught yourself

can be the difference between catching something and catch-
ing nothing.
I asked him about belly-hooking bait with those small tre-
ble hooks.
"I used to use a long-shank 7/0 single hook," he said. "I
started using treble hooks when I was fishing in shallow water
and getting a lot of cutoffs, so I took the hooks off a Rapala
lure and used them instead. That was back in 1984 or '83.
You're not going to see too many people use that."
Why not? For one thing, fishing-doers are copycats, and
if nobody does it there's nobody to copy it from, or to get it
offa (I got it offa Steve, y'know?).
I hesitate to copy Steve Wenger. It's not a natural-looking
presentation.
"It didn't make much difference on your trip," he said.
"When the dolphin are eating they'll take anything, but king-
fish like the three hooks in the belly."
Guys who are out there every day learn things like that.
He must be right. We put a lot of dolphin in the fish box.
With everyone else astern, I took the fly rod to the bow to
avoid hooking ears with my backcast. Still after dolphin, I tied
on a bigger deceiver but couldn't strip it in quickly enough to
excite the fish.
Soon we drifted close by that floating trap marker, where

a band of tripletail hovered. Their sternward fins are arranged
in a way that makes them appear to have three tails. They
swim on their sides, a style they got off some flounder. They
dress in mottled green and brown, like army camouflage.
Most of this bunch were small. One was stout.
I tossed the deceiver at them, but even with a subsurface
line it didn't sink enough. They don't come up; you have to
get down.

"What else you got?" a fish asked.
Big red and white thing with oversized eyes like BBs, I
said quietly, not wanting the other guys to know I was talking
to a fish.
"Let's see it," that one said, and I flung the fly.
Little ones tapped at it until the bigger one swam toward
the fly then snap, he bit the fly and was stuck a 20-inch-
er by Wenger's fish box ruler.
Here's a small-world twist: Four days later in Jupiter, I
dined at the Reef Grill where saut6ed tripletail was at the
top of the menu. I warned waitress Samantha Large that I'm
no rube when it-comes to tripletail. I wanted to see if the
restaurant's version was as good as my own.
She hooked my heart when she brought me a framed
copy of a tripletail story written for the Fort Pierce
Tribune four or five years ago by Joe Ward, an Indian
River Lagoon guide. He catches a lot of tripletail, many
much bigger than mine.
Samantha even copied a copy of Ward's piece for me. It
says tripletail grow as big as three-and-a-half feet, 50 pounds.
They go from the ocean into Indian River in April and hang
around until the weather begins cooling in October. Then they
migrate, northbound.
Joe Ward knows fishermen who specialize in tripletail
during their time inshore. Nice to know that, but I'll just keep
an eye out for them when fishing on the ocean for whatever
else is active. Pretty soon that'll be kingfish, then sailfish.
Ward's story ate up the time I waited for my dinner. The
chef did a fine job with the tripletail a big serving over var-
ious vegetables, some of which I recognized as Asian, and
with it a bounty of black beans and rice.
"Is it as good as yours?" the waitress asked as she deliv-
ered a fresh drink.
"There's nothing quite as good as cooking and eating a
fish you've just caught yourself," I said.
Samantha understood. "Next time you're here," she said,
"bring us your catch and we'll cook it for you."

marine businesses. Those with job openings are report-
ed to WorkForce One, which in turn finds people to fill
the positions.
In the past 14 months, the MIASF has informed
WorkForce One of 245 marine industry-related jobs. Grant
monies are also used to assist marine businesses to pay for
training existing and incoming employees, McBride said.
The MIASF also promotes marine industry jobs on its
own by coordinating magnet programs in high schools and
technical schools. Recently, the MIASF co-sponsored an
annual job fair in September in Davie with the South
Florida Manufacturers Association, McBride said.
The fair was a first time effort for the MIASF and the
South Florida Manufacturers Association. The event had 70

booths of prospective employers and drew more than 200
visitors. About 25 percent of the booths dealt with marine
industry-related jobs, McBride said.
The MIASF was very pleased with the response, both
from employers and the public, and is looking forward to
co-sponsoring another fair, she said.
"Next year, we want to boost the number of marine
industry employers at the fair to 50 percent."
The DVD and job fair are all part of a multifaceted
program designed to drive new people into marine industry
jobs, said Frank Herhold, the MIASF's executive director.
"There's a need to match quality workers with good
paying marine industry jobs," Herhold said. "The DVD will
graphically illustrate the opportunities that are available."

Speaking of business, the direct economic impact the
Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show has on the marine
industry exceeds $5 billion, second only to tourism. Add
vendors, workers and crews to tourism and it's a trickle
down effect that continues to grow each year.
"Every ship builder and designer comes here," Moran
added. "It's the only show where you can meet anybody."

You can bet that Atlantic City has more than casinos

Uaypoints

BY TERRY CONWAY
Waterfront News Writer
It started life sedately enough-as a wooded island
inhabited by Lenni-Lenape Indians. They called it
Absegami, or "little water."
In 1800, local physician Jonathan Pitney had the
lotion of creating a "bathing village and health resort" on
the island and joined forces with a group of eager busi-
nessmen. They laid the groundwork that some 80 years
later started Atlantic City's reputation as the "Queen of
Resorts."
Today, with the warm sun shining all day and the neon
glittering at night, Atlantic City has 24-hour gaming at a
dozen casinos, five star dining and headline entertainment.
But there's much more to the region then its dazzling
casinos. When you wake each morning, the sun is glitter-
ing off the Atlantic Ocean, a natural resource that's tough
to overlook. The famed boardwalk originates along the
Absecon Inlet and follows the Atlantic's broad beaches for
4-1/2 miles. Fudge shops and curios, small restaurants and
hotels line the wood walkway, looking inviting enough to
urge one and all to come in and explore.
Walking the "boards," it's easy to work up an appetite.
Folklore has it that at one time the boardwalk planks were
pulled up and put away during winter months.

Specialties
The region's famed saltwater taffy is said to have orig-
inated in 1883 after a storm flooded a candy store. Seafood
is featured on menus almost everywhere. Waterfront
restaurants are plentiful with views of the ocean as well as
rivers, lakes, bays, harbors and inlets.
The Knife & Fork Inn, a city landmark since the
1920s, is getting an interior redesign, while the Fying
Cloud Caf6 boasts a sexy raw bar where cocktails are

It's not all gambling: Boating and fishing has its share of
fans in Atlantic City, NJ.
served all day. You can sit on the patio and watch the sun
sink over the town's skyline.
Xhibition, which just opened, is a great place to min-
gle. It's a modem, rounded bar with plasma TVs, leather
chairs and mini beer kegs you can set up right on your
table. House of Blues, a 2,200-seat concert theater and
New Orleans-flavored restaurant, brings in acts like
George Thorogood and Rusted Root.

What to see
Absecon Lighthouse is just a few blocks from the
boardwalk, and well worth the visit. In 1857, ship captains
depended upon her to guide them away from the treacher-
ous Absecon shoals, also known as Graveyard Inlet. The
171-foot yellow and black structure is the tallest lighthouse
in New Jersey and the third tallest in the United States.
Visitors are still able to climb to the top for a view of the

bay and the Jersey shore.
Tour Gardner's Basin with antiques, eateries, boating,
a fisherman's museum and its crowning achievement, the
Ocean Life Center. The $4 million, three-story aquarium
houses eight aquarium tanks. The 750-gallon touch tank
filled with starfish, crabs, mussels and other sea life awaits
inquisitive little fingers. A 16-station computer uses inter-
active games to educate youngsters about New Jersey
marine life.
All along the coast are charter and party boats for hire.
You can make a day of it and, with luck, you will be going
head to head with marlin, Atlantic mackerel, tuna, shark,
dolphin, weakfish, and flounder. Of course, surf fishing is
always an option and you are likely to find bluefish and
striped bass at the end of your hook.
In nearby Oceanville, the Noyes Museum of Art
emphasizes American folkart and crafts. The rural setting
is part of the experience, reflecting less hurried times. The
gift shop displays pottery, ceramics, replicas of tableware
and handmade hunting decoys.
The Renault Winery, established in 1864 in nearby
Egg Harbor City, has been through several owners from a
corporate-run facility to today's family-owned and operat-
ed business. The complimentary winery tour ends with a
wine and champagne tasting. Stay for the gourmet six-
course dinner at the Renault Restaurant.
