Crewmembers affected by tsunami find help at Seafarers' House

By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
The crewmember was distraught.
The man, a cruise ship employee from Sri Lanka, had
called home from the bank of telephones at Seafarers
House to learn his wife and mother had survived the tsuna-
mi that struck Southeast Asia.
But his two cousins were killed.
"His cousins were from the old neighborhood,
where the man, his wife and mother had lived," said the
Rev. David Mesenbring, executive director at Seafarers'
House. "Because of his wages from the cruise ship, the
man had been able to build two homes in an area further
inland for himself, his wife and mother. He had yet to
build a home for his cousins and he was blaming himself
for their deaths."

Since the tsunami, there has
been an increase in requests for
services provided by the
nonprofit multi-faith ministry
located inside Port Everglades.

The cruise ship employee, in need of counseling and a
way to communicate with his family, was one of many
crewmembers from countries affected by the disaster who
have sought help from Seafarers' House.
Since the tsunami, there has been an increase in
requests for services provided by the nonprofit multi-faith
ministry located inside Port Everglades.
"People who rely on us for phones, Intemet access and
money transfers, suddenly their needs have become much
more urgent," Mesenbring said.
But while the ministry continues to serve crewmem-
bers from tsunami-affected areas, charitable support for the

organization has taken a severe hit, Mesenbring said.
"We've seen a dip in donations," he said. "People were
putting their contributions toward tsunami relief efforts. It
has put us in the hole."
Many potential donors don't realize that Seafarers'
House is helping the tsunami victims, Mesenbring said.
For example, during the month of January, the organi-
zation cut its money wiring service fees for crewmembers
sending cash to tsunami-affected countries.
"We're helping people who help themselves,"
Mesenbring said. "We're making it easier for them to stay

in their jobs and help their families. We're working with
people right now who have to skip their break from work-
ing at sea to work extra months to have money so they can
rebuild their homes."
About 1,000 crewmembers come through the
center on weekends, many from Indonesia and India,
Mesenbring said.
Seafarers' House was founded in 1989. It offers a retail
store, postage and mailing services and meals. Ecumenical

Boaters asked to rally against increasing regulations

By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Boaters are voters is the message that organizers want
to reach elected leaders during a statewide boating rights
rally that will coincide with the first week that the Florida
Legislature meets for its 2005 session.
The rally is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on
Saturday, March 12 at locations throughout Florida,
including Peanut Island in Palm Beach County and at the
Merritt Island Barge Canal.
As of late February, rallies have also been planned
along Florida's west coast at the Venice Inlet and on the
Cottee River.
Boaters are being asked to form their own rallies by
the Citizens for Florida's Waterways, a family boating and
water access advocacy group founded in 1991.
Crystal Mullins, an organizer for the gathering at
Peanut Island, said it's important boaters make their voic-
es heard. The rallies are to show the state legislature that
boaters are slowly being pushed off Florida's coastlines
with excessive speed zones, dock restrictions and morato-
riums on marina expansions, she said.
"If the boaters get regulated off the waterways, we all
lose," she said. "The marine industry brings in approxi-
mately $14 billion dollars a year to the State of Florida. It
would be economic devastation."

At each rally site, boaters are expected to cruise at
slow speed, displaying signs stating "We Boat We Vote."
"The idea is to let boaters everywhere in the state
bring forth their issues locally," said Steven Webster, vice
president of Citizens for Florida's Waterways.
"We just put the seed out there."

At each rally site, Boaters are
expected to cruise at slow speed,
displaying signs stating
"We Boat We Vote."

Two-thirds of the members belonging to Citizens for
Florida's Waterways are based in Brevard County. The
rest are from throughout Florida, said Webster, who lives
in Merritt Island and is also executive director of the
Florida Marine Contractors Association.
Citizens for Florida's Waterways did two previous
rallies on Memorial Day at Merritt Island. The first, in
2002, drew some 300 boats. The second rally in 2003
attracted 250 boats, Webster said.

There was no rally in 2004 because there were too
many other priorities, he said.
"We decided to bring it back in a statewide format and
change the date to the first weekend after state legislature
goes into session," Webster said. "It's important for them
to know there are an awful lot of boaters who vote."
To put boaters in the water on the same day through-
out the state shows legislators that there is power in num-
bers, Mullins said.
"Everybody wants the same thing, they want their
water back," said Mullins, a member of the Florida
Marine Contractors Association, which is helping to
organize the rally at Peanut Island. "We're not going to sit
back and let them regulate and regulate everyone until
they are off the water."

By hook or crook, you too can lure the elusive snook

By ARNOLD MARKOWITZ
Waterfront News Fishing Columnist
To catch snook, fish for
snook.
That means you should use
snook-specific tackle and tactics.
Oh, you might hook a snook once
in a while in any old way, but
that's pot-luck fishing. Snook you
catch that way will be accidental.
S. Not much beats the violent
i strike of a snook attacking a lure
Arnold Markowitz tossed into the shade of a man-
grove or a dock. The battle is often spectacular.
Thomas McGuane, the novelist, is fond of snook:
"Their heedless jumps fill us with aesthetic merriment," he
wrote in "Sports Illustrated."
Leather-skinned Florida crackers used to call the fish
"snuke." Some said "snewk," but they didn't quarrel over
spelling.
Florida lore holds that snook, snuke or snewk take
your pick used to be called soapfish because unskinned
fillets tasted soapy. Who knew what soap tastes like? Kids
who were caught lying. Their parents washed their mouths
out with soap.
Let's skin snook anyway, just in case that's a true
story.
First, let's plan a snook trip.
Do not hurry out to buy a snook rod and a snook reel.
There aren't any, and you may have the right tackle
already.
Got a medium to medium-heavy action bass outfit,
plug-casting or spinning? A whippy-tip rig you like for
bluefish and mackerel? Zap! They're snook stuff now.
You don't even have to change waters. Snook are salt
fish, but in winter they travel inland, often far past the salt
limit, because warm water is more important to them than
salinity.
Here's your only rigging order: tie on a new leader, no
lighter than 30-pound test.
Lisa Ockelmann-LoBello, the state snook biologist
featured in this month's page 4 story, prefers 40-pound
because the snook's sharp-edged gill covers can cleave a
lighter leader in twain.
Snook Lady says:

UFisin

Usually effective snook lures include Lefty's Deceiver
streamer flies (lower left) and (left to right) two types of
MirrOlure, two Millie's Bucktail jigs, two SeaBees and a
Bomber Long A. The green-backed Mirrolure
impersonates a Gulf coast baitfish called a greenie. The
other plugs act like finger mullet. Jigs imitate a variety
of small forage, depending on the way they're retrieved.
"You know snook are spooky, so use fluorocarbon,
especially in clear water, because they are going to see
your leader or a braided line. There's always one dumb one
in the bunch, but for the most part you'll find that fish
know what's going on. It's half intuition and half learned
behavior."
I met Ockelmann-LoBello at a fishing club meeting
where she spoke about her research. Later I picked her
brain in a two-hour interview. Most of the info here that
you already knew is from me. The extra insights and most
of the stuff you didn't know are from Snook Lady. They
don't call her that for nothing.
If you like to use live bait, a bucket of peppy shrimp
puts you in business. Snook also love finger mullet. If
you've wanted to learn the art of throwing a cast net,
there's your excuse to begin.
What else? Get some hard-body lures that dive a little

and dart like mullet when retrieved.
My favorite mullet counterfeit is the SeaBee, which I
think taught mullet how to swim. It's a marvelous lure, but
a marketing failure. Its last manufacturer, Luhr Jensen, put
it out of production several years ago.
I have a small hoard of them.
You want what? No.
I also favor a MirrOlure that looks like a Gulf Coast
forage fish called a greenie. If I ever catch a snook on fly,
that will be a Clouser-style weighted streamer, green or
white or both, or a Lefty's Deceiver that's black on top
with a white-green-yellow body.
Before I score once on a fly, I'll probably score often
with bucktail jigs. Bounce those slowly over shallow bot-
tom or jerk them quickly near the surface.
The Snook Lady told me her favorite hard-body lure
for snook is the Bomber Long A. It doesn't look much like
a SeaBee, except for a nearly identical darting motion
when retrieved. We like the same color combinations -
red and white or silver and black.
"Anything that looks like a mullet is good," she said.
We've both noticed that no mullet is red and white, but
that's still an effective color pattern.
SeaBees, Bombers and their ilk float at rest. Honest
mullet don't, so once you start the retrieve keep those
babies moving all the way to the boat. Vary the speed, but
no stopping.
Whatever lure you use, make it look alive.
The Snook Lady cites a for-instance well known to
tarpon-watchers: "If you're fishing under a bridge and
there's a tarpon facing into the current and shrimp are
flowing past, if you're flipping a shrimp up and down and
it's staying in one spot, they'll say something there just
isn't kosher."
We talked a while about a certain lake where I fish for
largemouth bass, near where a coastal river enters.
"There's a permanent snook population there," she
said.
"How come I've never seen one?" I wondered, and
quickly realized why. I had been fishing there for bass,
nearly always with soft plastic worms and minnows fished
slowly.
Next time I go, I'm bringing hard-body plugs and fish-
ing them in a quick, staccato darting motion. The plan is to
catch snook on purpose, bass only by accident.

Law, privacy, ai

the Internet

By MARK ERCOLIN
Waterfront News Columnist
It's no secret that today's e-mail-
driven society means less privacy.
In light of the increased use of the
Internet in business and even in privi-
leged communication with attorneys,
let's look at ,the some of the ways the
Interned is different from other forms of
communication.
First off, it was designed so it would-
n't be totally private. One of its original
functions was to allow scientists and gov-
ernment functionaries a way to commu-
nicate with each other during a full-scale
invasion or nuclear attack, when all other
forms of communication had been cut off
or disrupted.
Crudely described, the Internet was
set up as a multi-layered group of main-
frame computer communication nodes
and sub-nodes throughout the U.S. (and
later in other places) that could stay in
contact with each other even if one or
many of the computer nodes went down.
Its subsequent use in commercial
communication between private individ-
uals was not anticipated. Indeed, it could
almost be said that the original design of
the Internet was to allow for open and
unencumbered access to information
rather than offering privacy.
What changed in the dynamic was
the introduction of the microcomputer
into the hands of private individuals and
the creation of private commercial net-
work providers.
Other forms of communication are
far less likely to be seen or procured by a
third party. An e-mail of a private nature
cannot be eliminated without a trace
when it is delivered through electronic,
magnetic, and/or digital media.
Indeed, letters sent in sealed

envelopes by the U.S. Mail, and conver-
sations taking place on land-based tele-
phones, have expectations for confiden-
tiality that the law does not yet fully rec-
ognize for the Internet. Even a properly
sent fax generally is afforded a greater
recognition as private correspondence
than most e-mail.
Now, this is not to say that the
Internet does not have its uses as a tool
for information delivery. In fact, several
federal court districts are encouraging
lawyers to begin uploading their motions
and complaints to clerk offices rather
than hand delivering hard copies.
Uploaded documents are intended to be
part of a public record.
So, what should you do if you want
the best expectations for true confiden-
tiality?
My suggestion would be a private,
one-on-one conversation in person or on
a land-based telephone, and prearranged
fax transmissions. I would consider these
methods of communication safer for put-
ting forward sensitive information than I
would e-mail.
If you must use e-mail for sensitive
or private matters, here are my sugges-
tions:
Try to not put anything into an e-
mail that would bother you if it got seen
at some later time.
Compose your e-mails carefully.
Treat the composition as if it is a formal
business letter and review it from that
perspective, with several readings before
you send it out.
Although e-mail can be sent with
an encryption program, the receiving
party must by prepared to receive it by
having the same program. It should also
be noted that encrypted material in some

Waterfront News Guest Columnist
With condos springing up along the
New River, new hotels along Fort
Lauderdale beach, and an ever-more
active downtown, additional transit
options for working folks is becoming a
pressing need.
Yes, the city's Downtown
Development Authority is working on a
trolley along Southwest and Southeast
Second Street, from the Broward Center
for the Performing Arts to Las Olas
Boulevard, and the Department of
Transportation is planning to run a rail
line along Broward Boulevard from the
Tri-Rail station to downtown.
But what about utilizing the New
River for transit?
Water Taxi Inc. is looking for sus-
tainable funding to provide increased
waterbus services. The use of inland
waterways for transit has already been
recognized by the South Florida Regional
Transit Authority and VisionBROWARD,
and the fact that hybrid-electric propul-
sion with bio-diesel fuel can be used,
makes the concept all the more beguiling.
(Bio-diesel fuel is vegetable oil, a clean-
er burning fuel, that's just as good for
water buses as for pancakes.)
Brisbane and Sydney, Australia, and
Venice, Italy use waterbuses as a legiti-
mate mode of transit, so the idea is not
new. It is only new for Florida.
With charming, stylish landings
complementing the land uses along the
river, colorful signs and convenient path-
ways, why can't waterbus transit be one
more signature of downtown Fort
Lauderdale?
Bob Beckoff, founder of Water Taxi,
is working diligently to find the funding
and get others to recognize the potential.

He dreams big.
Commuters on the way to work,
school, shopping and on entertainment
excursions are among those who would
be served. The critical mass of people
needed to support 20-minute service
won't be moving in for a year when those
new condos will hopefully be filled, but
Beckoff is thinking ahead.
Early morning commuter buses on
the New River, a high speed, no-wake
ferry from a Marina Bay Park and Ride
to downtown, or from Port Everglades to
Miami, could mean a much less stress-
induced trip to work. A boat carrying 400
passengers could reach Miami in 45 min-
utes, according to Beckoff.
"They're used in London on the
Thames. So why not here?" he says.
The present three-year waterbus
demonstration project has proved that
growth of use can continue. Passenger
counts almost tripled in those three years.
If the high speed ferry demonstration
project Beckoff plans does come to be,
and the funding for continued services
materializes, the ferry will provide one
more much- needed option for those who
now have only one option driving.
Gloria Katz served as a Fort
Lauderdale District One City
Commissioner from 1999 to 2003.
Periodically, she will address issues
affecting South Florida's waterways.

Liveaboard sailor and software engineer

wins Waterfront News fishing contest

Douglas R. Reaney, a liveaboard sailor of Hollywood,
won the Waterfront News' readership survey prize of a
fishing charter.
Publisher John Ziegler called Reaney on Sunday Feb.
20 from the Miami International Boat Show, where his
questionnaire was drawn from a pile of entries at the
Waterfront News' show booth.

Like a fax, prearrange the sending of a sensitive e-

munication.
"But wait!" you might say, "With the advent of leg-
islation Since Sept. 11, aren't all communication mediums
subject to more scrutiny than before?"
Indeed, to a certain extent that may be true. But infor-
mation sent via the Internet, because of its original open
design, will probably remain one of the least private ways
of sending correspondence. So caution is advised.

Ladies to learn to
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Women angling to learn how to fish can sign up for a
seminar on the skills needed to tackle the sport's tech-
niques and terminology.
The weekend session is organized by Ladies, Let's Go
Fishing, a Davie-based group founded nine years ago that
holds seminars for women only throughout the state.
Its next event will be the only one held in South
Florida during 2005, said Lisa Steinberg, vice president.
The seminar runs 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 4,
opening with a welcome reception at the International
Game Fish Association Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum
in Dania Beach.
Participants will then meet for classes and hands-onh
instruction from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5
at the museum. Separate sessions address different levels
from beginner to advanced.
Classroom topics will include offshore fishing, bot-
tom fishing, inshore fishing and fly-fishing. The hands-on
portion will give women opportunities to try their skills at
such techniques as gaffing with grapefruits, backing a
truck and trailer rig and driving boats.
The seminar will end Sunday, March 6 with a half-
day fishing trip leaving from the docks of the Radisson
Bahia Mar Resort in Fort Lauderdale.
Cost is $120 per person for the seminar at the muse-
um. The fee includes meals, T-shirts, goody bags and door
prizes. Registration must be made in advance. The fishing
expedition is extra and can range from $35 to $95,
depending upon the type of charter vessel that participants
select, Steinberg said.
The seminar at the museum and Bahia Mar is one
of five similar events scheduled for this year in Florida,
she said.
Other ladies-only seminars will be held April 22 to 24
in Stuart; Aug. 26 to 28 in Sarasota; and Oct. 14 to 16 in
Islamorada.
The organization also sponsors fishing trips from July
7 to 11 in Alaska and July 23 to 24 in Key Largo.
The seminars, each of which can attract 80 to 160
women, are conducted by a mix of male and female

fish in South Florida's sole seminar

of Fishing."

speakers who encourage questions, Steinberg said.
The organization, founded in 1997, has held its Fort
Lauderdale seminars for the past seven years at the
International Game Fish Association Fishing Hall of Fame
& Museum, she said.
"It's a wonderful facility," Steinberg said. "It's an
exciting place and they are very supportive of our efforts
to bring more women into the sport."
Each seminar provides a comfortable learning envi-
ronment created by Ladies, Let's Go Fishing founder
Betty Bauman, who started the Davie-based group as a
way to lure more women into the sport.
Bauman said the program adheres to the organiza-
tion's credo, "The No-Yelling School of Fishing."
"At each seminar, we ask the ladies why there aren't
more women out there fishing," Bauman said. "A lot don't
go because they get yelled at and it's uncomfortable."

I- ,

The seminars help build their confidence, she said.
"Fishing on a boat is like a team sport," Bauman said.
"Everyone needs to do their part. Many newcomers aren't
familiar with the techniques and terminology. It's like a
foreign language. We want to provide them with informa-
tion so they will reduce the amount of mistakes, or what
we call yellable offenses, they can make. We're helping
them be a more competent member of the team."
Since founding the organization, Bauman said she gets
letters from ladies who have never picked up a rod and
reel. "We opened a whole new lifestyle for them."
The sport has many benefits such as providing unin-
terrupted quality time they can spend with friends, family
or in solitude, Bauman said.
"It's good exercise and a fun way to enjoy the won-
ders of the water. Fishing provides a challenge that is
attainable. It's a sport women can be good at. You don't
have to have physical brute strength."

Students put finishing touches on historic anchor restoration

By WILLIAM IR HAWKINS
Waterfront News Staff
POMPANO BEACH A group of Pompano Beach
High School students are mixing historical research with
practical science as they work to complete restoring an
old Spanish anchor.
"Alex and I were here at the beginning and we're going
to see this through to completion," said 17-year-old John
Krix, a junior who began the restoration project two years
ago when the anchor found its way to the school.
Since then, many students have volunteered their own
time to work on the project, but only Krix and Alex
Lakourgou have stayed for the duration.
"It's taken us longer than we ever thought it would, but
we're near the end," said Lakourgou, 16, also a junior. "But
it's never been boring and that's why I've enjoyed volunteer-
ing my time to work on the effort."
The project started in 2002 when Pompano Beach High
School science teacher Ralph Marchand wanted to save a
deteriorating anchor donated by Stephen Attis, an alumini of
the school and president of Vone Research, a local marine
research company specializing in saving Florida's coral reef.
Attis' company discovered the iron anchor on the
ocean's bottom in 2000 while working on a reef restoration
project near the Hillsboro Inlet. He salvaged it and decided
to give it to the school as a restoration project. -
Krix, who embarked on historical search using the
Internet and local sources, discovered the anchor was from a
Spanish cargo ship named Gil Bias. The ship regularly trav-
eled along the Florida coast between Cuba and Spain, and
was carrying cigars and sugar when it possibly got caught up
in a hurricane and sank off the Hillsboro Inlet in 1835.
Students also discovered that the ship was involved in
an Indian uprising as Fort Lauderdale settler William Cooley
tried to salvage the ship but was forced to abandon the effort
when Seminole Indians attacked Cooley's settlement along
the New River in Fort Lauderdale. Today, that site located
under the Southwest Seventh Avenue bridge is known as
Cooley's Landing.
Marchand, a retired engineer who became a science

teacher 10 years ago, said the restoration presented students
with both a historical and scientific challenge. He knew the
project would take awhile and asked for volunteers to use
their own time after school for the restoration.
In addition to Krix and Lakourgou, 17-year-old senior
Marquita Scott joined the effort last year.
"I want to be a science teacher some day so this has
been exciting for me," she said.
The students first spent weeks scraping off old barna-
cles and other things that had attached themselves to the iron
anchor. "We used small hammers to knock things off and
they were on there pretty hard so it took a lot of time,"
Lakourgou said.
They then build a large tank outside the high school
where they submerged the eight-foot long anchor to allow a
chemical reaction to remove layers of rust and barnacles.

Restoration involves electrolysis, using a chemical mixture
of sodium hydroxide, water, and electricity. Students
hooked up an engine to 10 metal plates that resonated an
electrical current through the water, eating away and
removing the corrosion.
Recently, the anchor was pulled from its chemical tank
and students sandblasted it to remove more debris. Once that
was completed, the anchor was coated with a seal to protect
it from the elements in years to come.
Students said the experience has been a great science
lesson as they've had to make certain they use the correct
chemical balance and electrical current to achieve their goal.
Last year, the school conducted an essay contest, asking
students to write about the history of the anchor in an effort
to get them involved.
Soon the anchor will be placed on a large concrete base
at the new oceanfront park being built at the Hillsboro Inlet.
An accompanying marker will carry the words of the win-
ning essay along with the names of students involved in the
restoration effort. Completion is expected this spring.

Wanted: snook catchers to help keep track of the fish's growth

remember to leave all the internal organs intact so I can tell
if it's a boy or girl."
Other than gender identification, the Snook Lady gets
DNA samples from the pelvic fins and muscle samples from
the fish's back. The DNA tells her if the fish belongs to the
Atlantic stock or the genetically different Gulf coast stock.
She removes otoliths, or earstones, from the head near the
top, above the gills. They look like chips broken off a seashell;
growth rings visible under a microscope reveal the fish's age.
Snook are among the most temperature-sensitive fish.
Now, about when February turns into March, they're
likely still in warmer waters so you may have to tour until
you locate snook. They probably won't be in the bays and
inlets where they hang out in summer, but in tributaries as
far upstream as snook have to swim to get comfortable.
When they find water warm enough, safely into the 60s,
they'll hunker down in the shade of docks, bridges and man-
groves, their favorite. There they will ambush forage fish
swimming by.
If the water cools off during the day, they are likely to
behave like cats or alligators, coming out of the shade to loaf
in the light of a sunbeam.
A snook's cold tolerance bottoms out when temperature
falls below 60 degrees.
"They're just like you and I," Ockelmann-LoBello says.
"When it's too hot we don't want to do anything, just lie
around. And when it's cold, you don't want to move around

Snook catchers are being asked to help the state's Snook
Research Program collect data used in keeping track of
the fish's abundance and growth.
a lot. When fish are cold, they get lethargic."
As the weather warms, most snook will move back to
coastal estuaries and bays. How will you know where to
look? Snook don't rise to the surface to look around, and the
waters they inhabit are often stained dark by mangrove roots.
In the cold-to-warm transition period, you can still fol-
low the canals and tributary streams, just not as far upstream

as when it was colder. Too iffy? Maybe you didn't know
there are guides who work for free: manatees. They do come
up to look around, and even if you miss that their tails make
a wide, flat circle on the water's surface.
"In winter, when you see manatees it is likely
you will see snook," the Snook Lady says, but it isn't
a prey-to-predator relationship and friendship is a doubt-
ful explanation.
"The reason is that they have about the same lower
lethal temperature tolerance, and both will move to winter-
ing grounds based on dropping water temperatures and cold
fronts," the Snook Lady says. "The water that comes from
fresh springs is around 73-75 degrees, which is very com-
fortable for snook and manatees.
"They could be buddies, but since that's not really sci-
entifically proven, I would not put that as an explanation,
although it would be kind of cool!"

Some of the best information known about snook
science and fishing is on the website of Florida's Fish

Kids among longstanding volunteers involved in annual Waterway Cleanup

2004, and five tons less than the 60 collected in 2003.
"We're happy to see the numbers go down, because it
means that after 28 years the word has gotten out to
boaters and others using the waterways to stop using them
for trash dump sites," Daily said.
Gordon Connell, MIASF director of association serv-
ices, dubs the cleanup, "the largest environmental event in
the county," as he explains the MIASF's ongoing goal to
promote sustaining Florida's natural resources.
"Our efforts are making a difference and our message
of environmental responsibility is being heard," he said.
This year's cleanup theme: "Our Waterways, Our
Future."
For Coral Springs Girl Scout troop leader Faith Davis,
the Waterway Cleanup is a family affair since Davis
involves her mother and two daughters.
Members of Senior Girl Scout Troop 773 and
Brownie Troop 192 of Coral Springs, will join in the
cleanup as they have done in the past, Davis said.
"I started it when my daughter, Trisha, became a
Brownie and now she's in high school and we're still
going. And now my youngest daughter, Shayna, is in
Brownies, so I have a few more years ahead of me."
Davis' mother, Irene Feinberg, a former scout leader,
