Art students depict Everglades wetlands in museum mural

By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
The latest addition to the International Game Fish
Association Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum is a colorful
mural that give visitors a realistic depiction of wetlands.
"It looks as if you can walk through the wall and into
the Everglades:' said Gretel McCausland, education coordi-
nator for the museum, at 300 Gulfstream Way in Dania
Beach.
The outdoor mural, on a formerly blank wall facing the
facility's 4.5-acre wetlands exhibit, measures 70 feet long
and 12 feet high. It was designed and researched by students
at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale as part of an environ-
mental science project.
Work is nearly complete. Students will return in January
to do minor, finishing touches, said Linda Irwin, special
events coordinator at the museum.
The museum's wetlands area has a wooden broad-
walk that allows the public to walk through the exhibit and
see various species of plants, animals and fish represent-
ing four types of marshlands found in Florida, More than
50 species of birds have been identified in the exhibit,
Irwin said.
The mural includes birds, water
lilies, gumbo limbo trees, fish, an
alligator, lots of sawgrass and other
native vegetation...
"The mural gives people the impression that the wet-
lands goes on forever," she said.
About 25 students and their instructor, Stacy Wolfe,
spent five weeks on the mural, coming to the museum for
three to four hours every Friday to paint. Their work also
included field trips to do research.
Wolfe is very pleased with her students' work. "It's fan-
tastic," she said. "I think they did a wonderful job in such a
short period of time."
Wolfe helped the students with the scientific aspect of

the mural by pointing out native species that needed to be
included in the painting.
"I'm not an artist," she said. "I teach science. I let the
students take control and I was the moderator."
She required the students to do research, including a
field trip to the Everglades. Each student was given five dif-
ferent plant and animal species to study. They were required
to find photographs and do sketches, Wolfe said.
The artwork includes birds, water lilies, gumbo limbo
trees, fish, an alligator, lots of sawgrass and other native veg-
etation, McCausland said.
"It's excellent," McCausland said. "These students have
amazing talent. They put their heart and soul into it. We've
gotten a lot of compliments from visitors. People love it."
It was McCausland who contacted the institute after a
request was made by the museum's new chief operating offi-

cer, Don Watts, to cover the blank wall.
"I had worked with Stacy Wolfe on another program
involving a sea turtle survey for the county," McCausland
said. "I knew she taught at the art institute and asked her if
she would be interested."
Among the students who worked on the mural:
Stephen Albert, Heather Buchanan, David Caicedo,
German Carranza, Kelvin Challenger, Andrew Coutain, J E
Cross, Ernesto Fernandez, Judy Figueroa, Marc Garcia,
Shannon Gathercole, Mike Gay, Jeramiah Johnson, Tulane
Kormos, Mike Maryott, Erica Miner, Remi Nazet, Jessica
Osterman, Damares Pleasants, Juan Rivero and Alejandra
Santamaria.
In January, a new class will work on another mural at
the museum on a connecting wall. The new work will fea-
ture a mangrove habitat, Wolfe said.

Advanced boating courses help students sail through problems

By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Boaters who want to take their skills beyond basic sea-
manship will find advanced classes where they can learn
how to chart a course to tying knots.
Local volunteer instructors with the U.S. Coast Guard
Auxiliary and U.S. Power Squadron both offer opportunities
where recreational sailors can boost their knowledge. Each
auxiliary and squadron in South Florida operate separate
class schedules.
"We have a lot of people who say I'm just going to go
boating up and down the Intracoastal," said Richard
LaFavre, commander of the Fort Lauderdale U.S. Power
Squadron. "At some point they will feel confident to go off
shore. But what if a rain storm, rough seas or mechanical
breakdown occurs. They don't have the knowledge."
The advanced courses prepare the boating public for the
different environments they will encounter when they decide
to go out and do extensive cruising, he said.
The U.S. Power Squadron has a boat smart course,
which covers the basics. After successfully completing the
class, students can then sign up for the organization's
advance learning program.
LaFavre estimates there about 25 elective courses that
are either home study or given by some 433 squadrons
nationwide. The numbers include four squadrons in
Broward, he said.

The Fort Lauderdale squad is the oldest of the four. It
was established in 1946. The group has its own headquarters
with classrooms at 915 SW 26th St. in Fort Lauderdale.
Advanced courses include a 25-hour seamanship course
that expands upon the basic skills. There's also classes in
piloting, advanced piloting, junior navigation, engine main-
tenance, marine electronics, cruise planning, sailing, elec-
tronic navigation and knot tying, LaFavre said.
In January, the Fort Lauderdale squadron will offer boat
smart, piloting and engine maintenance, he said.

Coastal navigation takes things a
step further, covering such topics as
how to chart courses, check,
bearings, fuel conservation,
understanding currents and tides,
and how to read compasses.

To take elective courses, students must be a squadron
member. Dues are $6 a month. There is an additional cost
for materials, which can range from $25 to $35 per course,
said LaFavre, a Deerfield Beach resident.
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers its own boating
skills program that teaches the basics, as well as a course
called coastal navigation geared for advanced learniAg.

The auxiliary's Flotilla 36 in Boca Raton will offer
instruction for the basics program and coastal navigation in
January.
Leonard Schwartz, public affairs officer for Flotilla 36,
said the boating skills and seamanship program gives gener-
al information.
Coastal navigation takes things a step further, covering
such topics as how to chart courses, check bearings, fuel con-
servation, understanding currents and tides, and how to read
compasses. Students are asked to chart a course in class,
Schwartz said.
Although it is recommended that boaters first take the
auxiliary's boating skills class, it is not required, he said.
"We've had people who just sign up for coastal naviga-
tion," said Schwartz, a Delray Beach resident.
The 14 week coastal navigation course costs $110 for
materials and plotting tools.
Tom Kegan, a master instructor with flotilla 36, will be
one of seven instructors for the upcoming coastal navigation
course. The course is given by.the flotilla twice a year. The
next class will be in September.
The program usually draws 10 to 15 participants, but not
all make it to the end, he said.
"It requires two to three hours of homework each week,"
Kegan 'said. 'There's a lot of people who can't give you that
time."
Because of the amount of work, about 20 percent of the
students drop outhe said.
"Most of the students come from the basic boating skills
class," Kegan said. "Boaters sign up because if they want to

Man believed to be country's oldest marine engineer looks back

By WILLIAM R. HAWKINS-
Waterfront News Staff
Nothing would thrill Walter Leander more in the new
year than to be back on board a ship working as an engineer,
a captain, or almost anything else.
But that's probably not going to happen, even though
Leander has a chief engineer's license issued by the U. S.
Coast Guard that won't expire until the year 2004.
By that time, the Fort Lauderdale man will be 97, and
says jokingly that he probably will still be looking for a job.
Now 94, Leander is believed to be the oldest licensed
marine engineer in the country and the oldest active veteran
of the American Merchant Marine Association.
"I miss the ships and the work that I loved doing, but
who would hire an old guy like me," says the retired engi-
neer and boat captain, who after a lifetime of recreational
and professional boating, is beginning the new year with-
out a vessel since last year Leander sold his own 35-foot
power boat.
Leander has lots of memories of the Merchani Marines,
his World War II service, and his career dealing with some
of the biggest cargo ships in the world. The walls of his
condo, located off Las Olas Boulevard, are filled with pic-
tures of ships, certificates and other marine memorabilia.
"I miss the world I once worked in, but I have lots of
good memories and am so lucky to be in good health," he
said.
Born in Providence, R.I., Leander's family home was
only a few feet from the ocean. His father, a boat captain for
a 200-foot schooner which hauled cargo between New York
and South America, challenged his son to love the water as
he did.
Then 8, Leander taught himself how to swim so he
could hold his father to a promise to get him a small boat if
he mastered floating.
Knowing he wanted to be an engineer of some sort at an
early age, Leander, who only completed eight years of

schooling, first tried to become an apprentice on the railroad,
but competition for such jobs was tough. At 16, his mother
saw his frustration at wanting to leam a trade so she sent him
off to sea with her husband.
"She put me on a boat early one morning heading from
Providence to Brooklyn," explained Leander. "When I
showed up at my father's boat yard, he couldn't believe it
and agreed to let me go to sea with him only after confirm-
ing it with my mother."
It wasn't long before Leander found his way to the
engine room and was thrilled at the noise, the smell and even
the dirty working conditions.

"There has always been something about engines that
has excited me, especially the sound," he said.
By the time he was 19, Leander was a chief engineer
working on ferryboats in New York City, and a few years
later was married and the father of a son. His marine career
was well on its way when World War II broke out.
Leander found he could best serve the nation by being
part of the Merchant Marines and its partnership between
government and private shipping companies, which were
vital in transporting war supplies, armaments and troops to
Europe.
He was chief engineer on the Granston Victory, which
transported up to 3,000 troops overseas. In the U.S.
Maritime Service he dealt with ships around the world. mak-

Study to help preserve North Fork's last natural habitat

This is one in a series of special features looking at
neighborhoods that line Broward County's waterways.
This month's feature takes a look at the mostly
African-American neighborhood of Washington Park,
located roughly from from Broward north to Sunrise
boulevards along the New River in Fort Lauderdale.

By WILLIAM R. HAWKINS
Waterfront News Writer
While many Broward County waterfront neighbor-
hoods are lined with million dollar homes and pristine
landscaping, folks living along the North Fork area of the
New River are more interested in simply preserving their
community.
Through a team of educators from Florida Atlantic
University and other environmentalists, the neighborhood
is finding a new sense of pride in the process.
"Our goal is to help the people in this area rediscover
their own history as well as preserve the natural environ-
ment they live in," said Ralph Johnson, a FAU architecture
professor and director of the university's Center for
Conservation of Architecture and Cultural Heritage.
Johnson and other FAU faculty are spearheading a
research and hands-on effort to study the North Fork of
the New River, which travels north of Broward Boulevard
past Northwest 27th Avenue through an area known as
Washington Park.
It is the only local waterfront community dominated
by African-Americans, many of whom have lived in the
area all their lives. Some enjoy the simple life of walking
to the river bank, tossing in a fishing line and waiting for
something to bite.
"It's nice to see the community coming together, but
no one wants to see this neighborhood look like all the
other ones along the river where it would be too expensive
to even live," said Wilbur Porter, Jr., whose family were
pioneers in this neighborhood once considered "wild
country" only 50 years ago.
Today, the houses are small, many built from wood,
and many not in the best shape' There are lots of empty
lots, with recently installed utilities and signs offering to
sell the land for as low as $400 a month. That's a far cry
from when Porter's dad bought the area's first lot 50 years
ago for $5 down, with payments of $5 a month.-
i Johnson calls this last remaining section of the New

River still in its natural state an "ecological treasure." -
"This is the last waterfront area of its kind," said Tom
Kazo, director of the nonprofit Wildlife Research Team of
Hollywood. "Our goal is to help clean up the river by the
year 2003 and make it a place where you could once again
swim in it if you wanted."
The group's volunteers and FAU urban study students
have been working for the past year on cleaning up the
North Fork, taking hundreds of bags of debris away via
canoe every weekend.
"There's a tremendous sense of accomplishment as
we see the waterway coming back to life and this will
have an impact on what the people in the neighborhood
think about where they live and take pride once again in
their environmental surroundings," he'said.
.Kazo said his team took five years to clean up a sec-
tion of waterway in urban Miami, but the results helped
turn a neighborhood around, and he e\pecis the same to

Neighborhood :gatherings at the site began last year.
The first one held last November was a chance for

Admiralty

It's on to

the races!

By MARK ERCOLIN
Waterfront News Columnist
Needless to say, on the national level
2001 will be considered by most to have
been a difficult year. Hopefully, as the
daily humdrum resumes, emotional securi-
ty will return.
Until then, many people have taken
somp solace by watching or participating
in sports. In that context,' if you are, like
myself, an alumnus of University of
Miami, this has been a particularly good
year and will hopefully be a great New Year.
If on the other hand, you are a'Gator
fan, you are probably far less excited
about the post New Year's line-up. But
I'm sure I speak for most Canes when I
say that we are more than willing to share
ourjoy with you.
Collegiate football rivalries aside,
2002 will very likely bring yacht racing to
the forefront, especially with several
world races scheduled to have stopovers in
south Florida.
Now, you would think that the partici-
pants of yacht races would be of the high-
est and noblest character, the sort of people
who can easily resolve differences among
themselves. And in fact, court cases
regarding yacht races are not abundant.
But those that do exist are instructive,
and should be of interest to those who
enjoy the sport.
Not surprisingly, the two areas that
have entered the courts were matters
concerning collision damages and per-
sonal injuries.
In one case, the rules of the yacht race
conflicted with those of the International
Regulations for Preventing Collisions at
Sea, the COLREGS for short. The courts,
in reviewing the issues very carefully,
looked into concerns of contract, accep-
tance of risk, forums for grievances and of
course, tradition.

Generally, the courts in race collision
cases seem to agree that for the purposes
of the race, where the rules are formally
laid out, the COLREGS would not usual-
ly apply.
Also, if the rules provide foi a'review
board to determine fault in the collision -
barring the issue of gross negligence -
the courts appear to be willing to accept
that board's rulings. But if the racing
forum is not designed for making damage
determinations, then the courts are pre-
pared to take up that issue.
In light of such legal decisions, both
yacht race participants and those who
sponsor races should review their racing
rules and contracts very closely.
Although not as common as collision
cases, the injury of a racing participant has
come up in the courts in a rather surpris-
ing manner.
On occasion, the courts have been
asked to determine whether an injured
yacht racer is, in fact, a "seaman" who can
collect maintenance and cure under tradi-
tional maritime law, and is able to sue the
vessel owner for negligence under the
Jones Act.
On first blush, it would seem that the
avenue to ,the rights of seamen status
would require proof of compensation.
However, it appears that some courts feel
that compensation is not the determining
factor in deciding who is a seaman.
Instead, they reviev*other factors such
as whether the volunteer was asked by the
owner or the captain to become part of the
crew, and whether the volunteer was
placed in a "master and servant" style rela-
tionship during the course of the race.
In some cases, the courts have found
that such racing participants might be con-
sidered seamen for legal purposes

'U shell sea'

By RICK ROUGHEN
Waterfront News Columnist
Resolutions are out, predictions are in.
Regardless, the same old game will play
out this year just like every other year, and
There's nothing-we can do about it.
All along the waterfront, newly dedi-
cated joggers will pound the pavement,
ridiculously garbed roller-bladers will slip
and slide and skin their knees, and back-
yard sailors will fiddle around with some
brand new project on their boats.
The difference is that two months after
New Year's day, backyard sailors will still
be fiddling around with a brand new pro-
ject on their boats (that's my first predic-
tion). But all the jogging and roller-blading
equipment will be neatly pressed in a big
clump somewhere in the garage.
I thought it would be fun to make a go
at some localized predictions for those of
us who "mess about" on the waterfront.
Let's see how things shake out by this time
next year.
Remember, this is just for fun so don't
go making any investments, like changing
careers or starting a band just 'cause we
think it might go over big this year! Steady
as she goes, folks... that's the name of
today's game:
Prediction No. 1: Residential water-
front properties will continue to hold their
value, but don't count on big gains like
we've seen for the past three years. Look
for 3 to 5 percent rises overall.
Commercial waterfront is a different story
and the sky's the limit! If anything goes up
for sale, big bucks will be the only ticket
that gets you in the door.
Prediction No. 2: The Marine
Industries Association of South Florida
will have a landslide year including
increased membership, political victories
and national attention. New leadership

under pros like incoming President Scott
Miser, and continuing expertise from
dedicated warriors like Executive
Director Frank Herhold, will make all the
difference (is my nose brown?).
Prediction No. 3: Our luck has run
out with dodging the big blow. I predict
we're gonna get whacked this year by a
hurricane and have a real bummer sum-
mer (I said that so that it really wouldn't
happen...now we're safe).
Prediction No. 4: The Fort
Lauderdale marine industry will have a
very strong year with sales levels exceed-
ing expectations. Terrorists or no,
Americans love to go boating and they
love to raise cane on the waterfront.
Look for bigger and better boat
shows, increased quality production and
new technologies that will keep the
whole enchilada moving forward.
Prediction No. 5: Look for three new
shipyards to stake out powerful claims on
the New River (don't ask me how I
know). The bigger dinosaur facilities will
start to feel the heat ouch!
Prediction No. 6: Broward County
Commissioners will vote to allow an
open access super-yacht facility in Port
Everglades. The Docks at Southport are
an absolute must. If they miss the boat on
this one folks, we all better sell our hats
and start paddling north!
Prediction No. 7: The "Boat Yard
Blues Band" will finally top the charts
among local musical talent pools once
and for all. Drummer Big Rick, lead
vocalist screaming' Aussie "Torch," elec-
trifying A/C Pete on lead guitar; dazzling
bass player Dennis, and dynamite gui-
tarist Dan are the local shipyard nuts and
bolts that will finally be recognized as
true legends in their own minds.

Injured yacht racers could be legally

Predicting which way the tide will turn

If you haven't heard these guys jammin' their serious
blues on the waterfront recently, you should. The only rea-
son I can razz them so bad is because they play so good!
Fair-dinkum, gents.
Prediction No. 8: Chill Pointe will become the new
and favorite social gathering place for river rats looking
for a new career on the waterfront. Its simple yet tropical
ambiance mixed with volleyball, burgers and ice cold
Kaliks will capture the hearts of all who seek a better
place to be. Got ya wondering what I'm talking about? Be
patient and U shell sea!

Prediction No. 9: My wife and I will finally have the
long-awaited reunion dinner with my long lost and deeply
appreciated office staff. The greatest ladies in yachting
will dine with us on fattening, expensive stuff and laugh
about the good old days.
Prediction No. 10: Osama is toast, and Sadam is
gonna get his butt kicked!

Advanced boating course teaches students to chart a course

move their boat from A to B, this is a good course to do it.
If you want to take your vessel on trips and cruises, this is
necessary. People really want to know how to read a chart
when they go somewhere."
Auxiliary 36 will also offer a GPS class, to be held on
two consecutive Saturday afternoons at the end of
February. The class is geared to boaters who want to learn
the equipment before they go out and spend money,
Schwartz said.

The Center for Environmental
Education and Research Inc. in Fort

classes but will not be holding the
course this year.
The Center for Environmental Education and Research
Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, does offer advanced classes but will
not be holding the course this year.
Instead, the organization is concentrating on expanding
classes for its basic boating certification program, called
Boater 101, said Dana Thurston, director of programs.
Boater 303, the advanced class, will be brought back in

2003, she said.
To find out where U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and
U.S. Power' Squadron basic and advanced classes are
being held, BOATU.S. has an information line at 800-336-

Class information can also be obtained from the

Thrill of the engine room lured retiree

ing sure the engines worked and schedules were met despite
being under heavy fire in dangerous war zones
In 1946 after the war, Leander went to John Hopkins
University where he was certified to teach engineering, He
taught at night while his post-war day job was working as a
stationary engineer for the City of New York overseeing
some of its tunnels.
While teaching, Leander met a student whose father ran
the Valentine Chemical Carriers Corp., a major worldwide
transporter of oil and other products. It wasn't long before
Valentine tapped Leander to be its port engineer, overseeing
details surrounding the arrival of each of the company's
huge ship at port destinations around the globe. He became
a one-third owner and vice president of the company, and
eventually opened a Fort Lauderdale-based office in 1964.
"We bought a house in Lighthouse Point and really
enjoyed living in Florida," said Leander, who married his
current wife, Ann, 20 years ago after his first wife of 40
years died.
In 1968 while in his 60s, Leander stepped down from
Valentine to embark on a new career as a sea captain. Upon

getting his captain's license, he worked on mega yachts
heading up private trips to the Bahamas, Key West and other
tropical ports.
Now he recounts story after story about the challenges
he faced in getting crews to work on the big cargo ships he
was responsible for and making sure deliveries were made
on time. And he can show lots of pictures and talk about the
time when a large yacht overturned in the New River and
Leander's engineering skills were able to upright the vessel
in a shorter time and at far lesser cost than original estimates
made by big salvage companies.
"He's indestructible and driven," said his wife, Ann.
"He never gives up once he is faced with a challenge. He
sees it through to the end."
These days, Leander is trying to master a musical key-
board, a gift from his son. He's also constantly waxing and
restoring his 1986 Oldsmobile station wigon. "I love that
car," he said.
From his condo, he sees boats docked along the canals
off Las Olas Boulevard.
"You know, many of those boats never seem to leave the
docks," said Leander. "I don't know why someone would own
a big boat like that and never take it out to sea. I sure would."

Sense of history highlights Washington Park neighborhood

Seminole Indian trading posts nearby and the mixing of
the Indians with the African-Americans.
"This is the only place of its kind left in Broward
County with such a rich heritage," said Oliver, who
believes a lot of history has disappeared as older settlers
have died or moved away. Buildings also have been lost.
Once the written collection is compiled, it will go
into the new $10 million African-American Research
Library now being built next to Delevoe Park, located at
the corner of Northwest 27th Ave. and Sistrunk
Boulevard. It is under the wing of the Broward County
Public Library system.
"It's great to hear and record the stories of these early
families in the neighborhoods," said Easter Wilcher, act-

ing director,."The library will be a resource to preserve
that history as well as enable future generations to better
understand the heritage of the community."
The library is one of only three in the nation dedicat-
ed to African-American history, with two others in New
York City and Atlanta. It is due to open in a year and will
offer exhibits and stage productions in its 300-seat theater.
Exhibits will feature African-American art, such as
posters created by elementary and middle school students
in the New River area to help reflect on the North Fork's
history. Johnson said a number of teachers have been sup-
porting the local program by making the art projects a
learning experience about black history.

along the river are part of his cherished memories.
The 63-year-old retired boat yard worker was only a
month old when his family moved to the area and lived in
a segregated West Dixie Couft housing area off Northwest
4th Street and 19th Avenue.
"We were about a mile away from the North Fork, but
I can remember walking over there with my friends to
jump in the water and fish," he recalled.
Then the area was a wilderness and the sweeping
development Hinton has seen over his 60 years has
changed the face of the community.
"I think that the effort today to collect the history of
the neighborhood and try and create a new sense of pride
is good and is needed," he said. "There have been good
people living here and it is important to share the history
so others will know what they went through."
Hinton laments that the New River may never be able
to return to its natural state of cleanliness, but he said he
always will have the memories of good times on and in it.
"A lot of buildings are gone and there is no question
that some aspects of the area have fallen on bad times,"
said Johnson, noting the amount of empty storefronts
along Sistrunk Boulevard.
The FAU study is being funded by the Florida Division
of Historical Resources. Also involved in the effort are the
Broward Urban Trails, South Florida Water Management
District and the Audubon Educational Center.

Fishing opportunities on Florida's 'Forgotten Coast' worth remembering

By TERRY CONWAY
Waterfront News Writer
Once bustling with steamboats and sail-powered cargo
lighters, the Apalachicola waterfront laid claim as the third
busiest Gulf Coast shipping hub at the start of the Civil War.
Bales of cotton and other commodities streamed down
the Apalachicola River to its town docks. Here the payload
was auctioned, warehoused and stacked on barges before
being transported onto vessels for countless voyages to
France and other European nations.
Located in Florida's panhandle, Apalachicola (Indian
for "people on the other side") is halfway between Panama
City and Tallahassee. The town's colorful and diverse 19th
century prosperity included lavish hotels, European con-
sulates, a racetrack and an opera house.
Remnants remain very visible today through a collec-
tion of 200 historic structures and restored homes big
old clapboards, two-stories tall with wrap around porches.
Built of virgin long-leafed pine, the Victorian homes
were pegged rather than nailed, which enabled them to
weather the panhandle's most ferocious storms. They were
also constructed on expansive lots shaded by huge, spread-
ing live oaks and magnolias on front lawns dotted by the
beauty of azaleas, camellias and pyracanthas.
The Apalachicola region is a vast expanse of national
and state forests, and a seemingly endless supply of protect-
ed shallow bays, pristine beaches and miles of peaceful
rivers, creating a wonderful sanctuary. Apalachicola Bay is
considered one of the least polluted, underdeveloped,
resource-rich systems left in the United States.
The coastal land is a vital stopover during the Gulf
Coast fall and spring bird migrations. Here is where hawks,
falcons, warblers, egrets, herons, pelicans and plovers come
to nest in the area. And manatees are an increasing presence
during warmer months.
Apalachicola Bay's 210-square mile estuary, which is
comprised of St. George's and St. Vincent Sounds and the
Apalachicola River, provide nutrient rich waters vital to its
productivity. It is celebrated for its tasty oysters. Oystermen
bring the delicacy to the surface from more than 7,000 acres

The Governor Stone is docked out front of the red-
bricked Grady building.

U.ml

of oyster "bars." They fish in small wooden boats about 23
feet long, using tongs which look somewhat like two rakes
attached in scissor-style.
Whether you hire a charter boat or fish right off the
bridge, Apalachicola Bay and St. George's Island offer some
of the best fishing throughout the state.
In the last four years, Sports A Field magazine has
labeled the area one of the best 50 places for fishing nation-
wide. The spotted sea trout is found inshore and nearshore
over grass, sand and mud bottoms, and in deeper waters dur-
ing the warmest and coolest months.
Built in 1877, the Governor Stone, a 40-foot gaff-rigged
schooner, has seen service as an oyster buy boat, "rum run-
ner,'"sponge freighter, U.S. Merchant Marine training vessel
and pleasure craft. Designed with especially shallow drafts,
it carried a great press of sail so the vessel could slip over
sand bars typically found along the Gulf coast prior to the
dredging of channels for deep water cargo ships. These days
it serves as a working museum, and is considered the oldest

operating sailing vessel of the American South.
The Governor Stone is docked out front of the red-
bricked Grady building, whose second floor served as the
French consulate, operating into the early 20th century.
Today, "The Consulate" has been resurrected into four lux-
ury suites with full kitchens, living areas and balconies over-
looking the Apalachicola river. On the lower level, you'll
find the Grady Market which features superb antiques, col-
lectibles and shopping in a tony setting.
Driving over the sweeping bridge from the mainland
that arches over the shipping channel, newcomers take in the
serenity of St. George's Island. It is the largest of four out-
lying barrier islands. A narrow sliver of land 28 miles in
length, it flanks the Gulf of Mexico and is home to 600 full-
time residents.
Along with strict building codes which mandate no
structure taller than 35 feet above the pilings, the local's
mind-set helps keep at bay the jarring pressures of modem-
day life.
St. George's compact village district, a few square
blocks adjacent to the bridge, holds a handful of restaurants
and small shops. Finni's Grill & Bar and the Blue Parrot
Oceanfront Caf6 feature dining decks and thatched cabanas
where patrons gaze out onto the gulf. The food is unaffect-
ed, tasty and affordable.
At the far eastern end sits St. George's Island State Park,
where bald eagles and ospreys nest and rear their young. The
park is a 1,962 acre retreat of high dunes, salt marches, sand
coves, forests of slash pines and coastal scrub, nature trails,
picnic areas with bathhouses, boardwalks, observation
decks, a campground and nine miles of undeveloped beach.
Looking ahead, the fourth annual Apalachicola
Antique & Classic Boat Show is slated for April 27.
Special highlights include the Governor Stone and a festi-
val that showcases a model boat exhibit, nautical arts, and
antiques and crafts that embody the rich fishing heritage of
Apalachicola Bay.
