Boating fatalities

took a dip in 2000
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
The millennium got off to a great start for boaters in
Florida. Statewide, statistics complied for the year 2000 by
the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
show that fatalities and accidents are at record lows.
According to the commission's 2000 report, Florida
experienced the lowest number of boating-related deaths in
10 years and the lowest number of accidents since 1994.
Although many people
welcome the news about
lower fatality and accident rates,
boaters shouldn't expect any
breaks on their insurance.
Though pleased with the news, some officials remain
cautious. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission Lt. Lee Palfrey voiced concerns that the newly-
released figures might cause people to become complacent.
"The numbers are down, but we're not celebrating,"
said Broward Sheriff's Office Marine Unit Sgt. Larry
Whitford. "But we are on our way."
The commission-issued report states there were 1,194
accidents in Florida during 2000, compared to 1,292 acci-
dents in 1999.

The 2001 Speedo National
Outdoor Diving Champsionships
took place Aug. 7 at the Hall
of Fame Aquatic Complex in
Fort Lauderdale. Over 100
divers from across the country
competed for national titles.
Pictured is the men's 3-meter
synchronized diving.

Of those numbers for 2000, there were 147 accidents
in Broward County, 145 in Monroe County, 95 in Palm
Beach County and 80 in Miami-Dade County.
Broward ranked first in the state for accidents in 2000.
Monroe came in second, followed by Palm Beach at num-
ber three, Palfrey said.
For fatalities, Florida ranks third in- the nation. The

highest number of deaths in the past 10 years reached its
peak in 1995 with 82 fatalities. In 2000, there were 46
boating-related deaths statewide. Of those fatalities, none
occurred in Broward and Miami-Dade counties; five were
recorded in Monroe and one in Palm Beach counties.

Boating safety class for teens heads into new school year

By WILLIAM R. HAWKINS
Waterfront News Writer
A unique Broward County boating safety program
aimed at teenagers is one that may be helping to lower
accidents and fatalities in the.state.
"We want this course in as many schools as we can,
and not just in Broward County but statewide, and we'll
be moving into several other states too," said Janet Lopez,
marketing/sales director for the BoaterlOl course.
Its goal is to educate middle and high school students
on boating safety, environmental awareness, and to stimu-
late career interest in the marine industry. Florida law has
required young boaters to be certified in safety since 1998.
Started in 1993 by the non-profit Center For
Environmental Education and Research Inc., or CEERI for
short, BoaterlOl is a model course in the state of Florida.
"One of our largest successes has been through the
school system," said Dana Zorovich, director of programs
for the center, which also offers classes to adults.
In the 2001-2002 school year, over 100 teachers are
expected to be trained so they can teach the course as part
of a science curriculum. Thirty-eight have been certified
to date.

The course is aimed at middle and
high school students in an effort
to reach a new generation
of potential boaters.
The group also wants to certify 10,000 students with-
in the next few years. More than 2,000 have been certified
in the last two years.
Additional plans call for expanding the course into
Palm Beach County this fall, followed by neighboring
counties. With the help of local marine industry associa-
tions, pilot programs will take place in select target states.
By January 2002, BoaterlOl will also be available
on-line as an Internet course. "We already have a website
set up and are working on details to make the course
exciting to take from anywhere in the nation," Lopez said.
Organizers hope efforts to link the course to career-
based school programs will make students more aware of
future jobs in marine fields.
A Boater 202 course, which will be a more hands-on
approach to water safety, is also on'the books. The idea is

to establish an on-water campus so students could experi-
ence first-hand various marine aspects.
Susan Engel, president of CEERI, helped establish
Boaterl01 in 1993 by forging a partnership with the
Broward Board of Education to get the course into
schools. The Marine Industries Association of South
Florida, of which Engel is past president, also has been a
key player in the educational effort.
The organization helped pass the 1997 Florida
Boater Education Bill that requires anyone born after
Sept. 30, 1980 to complete a boater education safety
course before they can operate any motorized vessels of
more than 10 H.P. Once a student takes the course, he is
certified for life.
It's an effort to reach a new generation of potential
boaters. The course originally fell under a physical edu-
cation curriculum, but has been considered a science cat-
egory to give it a stronger base in classroom studies.
"The course gives a ... view of the environmental
aspects of boating and of the marine industry as part of
the economic base of the community," Lopez said.

Master caulkman lovingly gives old boat hulls new life

By WILLIAM R. HAWKINS
Waterfront News Writer
Red Hughes may be among the last of the wooden
boat craftsman, but he expects to work at the trade he
loves for years to come.
"I never plan to retire, but sometimes I have to slow
down when my body can't keep up with me," he joked.
Hughes, 75, is a master caulkman. His talent has
helped save many an old wooden boat. He gives a boat's
hull new life by carefully removing bad filling from old
wooden planks and replacing it with a new cotton sub-
stance.
"I've been doing this for so long on so many boats all
over the place, that I have lost track of just how much
work I have done all these years," said Hughes, whose
love affair with boats began as a kid in Miami.
Some of his more famous clients have included
Jacque Cousteau and the Kennedy family. At times he has
worked 32 days straight to restore a wooden hull in time
for a special voyage.
"Red is a one-of-a-kind craftsman and I was so lucky
to find him," said Hampton Peterson, a Fort Lauderdale
attorney who called on Hughes to help restore his 1937
Hercuvean II.
"When I found it in New Jersey, I knew it was special
and wanted to restore it, but I couldn't do it by leaving the
boat up North while I was home in Fort Lauderdale,"
Peterson said.
So last December he shipped the boat south and
docked it at Bonnie's Ravenswood Marina in Dania Beach
for restoration.
Once the 42-foot vessel, with its magnificent
mahogany wood and spacious cabin decorated with art
deco accessories, was hoisted up, Peterson discovered the
worn-out hull. He called on Hughes for help.
Born in Miami, Hughes was introduced to a nautical

Miami boat yard and was a role model to Hughes, who
quickly became hooked on boats.
He quit school early and after service in World War II,
he turned to boat carpentry, learning to properly caulk so
seams would last.
"You have to know what you're doing or it just won't

with people who try to tell him how to do his own job, or
- worse yet get in the way when Hughes is trying to
work.
Armed with special tools, some of which he has cre-
ated himself, Hughes carefully pounds along a seam to
remove old fillings. He then goes back and replaces it with
a fine cotton fiber that allows the wooden planks some
breathing space, but is also water tight.
"It's a lost art I suppose," said Hughes, who gets calls
from across the country due to word-of-mouth. At times,

Sailboat Bend: An eclectic mix of the new and old

This is another in a series of special features looking
at neighborhoods that line Broward County's waterways.
By WILLIAM R. HAWKINS
Waterfront News Writer
Bill Saunders sits on his front porch and looks across
the street to his Sailboat Bend neighbors.
From his two-story wooden Avenue of the Arts home,
he sees the Broward Center for the Performing Arts,
Riverwalk and the New River as it winds its way through
the Fort Lauderdale.
"I go over there during those Sunday jazz festivals
and welcome people to the neighborhood," he joked. "I
sure get the oddest looks."
But Saunders is serious when he talks about Sailboat
Bend's status as the city's oldest residential neighborhood,
from which Fort Lauderdale sprung. Today it is coming
alive with new growth thanks to the success of the adja-
cent Riverwalk development.
The neighborhood stretches as far east as the FEC
Railroad tracks; south to the New River; north to Broward
Boulevard with the New River, as it winds under Broward
Boulevard, lapping at its western edge.
As a board member of the Sailboat Bend Civic
Association, Saunders, who moved here five years ago,
takes pride in what's happening all around him. A
Sailboat Bend neighborhood sign in his front yard and a
publicity plate on the front of his truck shows his neigh-
borhood pride.
It was the start of the 19th century when development
began as Henry Flagler's railroad opened up south
Florida, and Sailboat Bend became an eclectic mixture of
house styles and people.
Always a working class neighborhood, the area fell
on hard times in the 1950s, but rebirth came 30 years later
when the downtown arts area began to take shape. That
led to the Sailboat Bend Civic Association, formed in
1980, to help promote historic preservation and neighbor-
hood pride.
In more recent years, many of the charming "cracker"
cottages have been restored, complete with picket fences
and bright colors. Meanwhile, older concrete buildings

still dot the landscape, with hopes that eventually they will
be replaced by more architecturally pleasing designs.
More than 850 residences are nestled among the tree-
lined streets. Larger, more showy homes line the New
River as it winds along the neighborhood.
Many of these homes remain hidden from the street
by walls, ficus hedges and wooden gates. But from the
river, passing boaters see large perfectly trimmed green
lawns and sailboats docked here and there.
John Kleinedler, president of Sailboat Civic
Association, said homeowners are upgrading their proper-
ties as new private developments spring up. The associa-
tion even has a website to help promote the neighborhood.
"It's an exciting time and there is a great deal of
potential," said Kleinedler. "This is a neighborhood in
transition and planned new upscale housing developments

Will big boat

history repeat?

By RICK ROUGHEN
Waterfront News Columnist
It's hard to believe, but Miami was the
"port of choice" for "yachties" and plea-
sure boaters some 30 or 40 years ago when
many of us were just kids.
Back then "big" as in boats was
running around 65 to 100 feet. The Miami
River could accommodate those vessels
with no problem. Crime was not an issue.
Traffic was minimal. A pleasant environ-
ment and some serious shipyard know-how
was easy to locate. Housing, service and
haul-out capabilities were abundant on the
Miami River and life was good.
Then someone got the bright idea that
Fort Lauderdale would be a great place to
work on boats. "Big" got bigger and by the
late 1970s an average chunk of floating
steel checked in at about 120 feet.
Yards capable of hauling these vessels
popped up on the New River and all of a
sudden,, the bulk of the industry seemed to
have moved north. I was still in high
school, but legends like the late Jimmie
Smallwood were hard at work putting our
Fort Lauderdale backyards on the map.
It would be decades before the whip-
per-snappers of my generation would find
themselves in the driver's seat of the oper-
ations that predecessors built. And in
some respects, I fear that we may be
asleep at the wheel.
Be that as it may, the question has
been asked and answers have been offered,
but the ultimate mystery in South Florida
will probably remain: how and why did
Miami let it happen?
It's an amazing thing that we here in
Fort Lauderdale have come to enjoy being
referred to as the "Yachting Capital of the
World." The designation bolsters our prop-
erty values, enhances our businesses and
creates jobs. It brings new development

4
C

money into town and creates an incredi-
bly diverse product and local service base
for us to enjoy. I grew up in Miami and
somehow they let all of that slip away
without a fight. Unbelievable!
Noteworthy and yet very trouble-
some is the realization that the big boats
are becoming much, much bigger.
Fort Lauderdale may well be on the
verge of getting a big dose of its own med-
icine. We may be close to losing our over-
whelming foothold on the mega-yacht ser-
vice and repairs industry by virtue of our
inability to house, haul and service what
some refer to as the "Z" class of super
mega yachts, those 200 to 400 feet long.
These huge buckets of money want
badly to come here to be serviced and
doted over just like their smaller cousins,
but water depth, bridge restrictions and
various other locational inadequacies
currently limit their options.
Meanwhile, alternate ports are work-
ing hard to develop facilities that will
quietly lure this lucrative and growing
market niche away from Fort Lauderdale.
Something needs to be done now before
we fall into the same trap as our neigh-
bors in Miami did three decades ago.
Some have looked in to developing
shipyard facilities outside Fort
Lauderdale, and others have even gone so
far as to park operations in foreign coun-
tries just off our shores.
These actions are in part a direct
result of dwindling local waterfront land
that can offer the required attributes of
unobstructed deep-water access. They
may also be unfair strategic moves to
leverage the rest of .the marine industry
that is bound to comply with the local
environmental and operational rules and
regulations with which we are all familiar.

Determining in advance who gets custody of the boat

E IlTlhlfl ii:ll all'antilI a."11
when a boat is a major asset in the marriage, it is a subject
that shouldn't be ignored.
During a divorce, one of the major questions that usu-
ally arises is, "What assets were held by the individuals
before marriage, and what assets were acquired during the
marriage?"
This question can be crucial when it concerns the fate
of a vessel that is part of the married couple's lives. If a
boat belonged to a spouse before the marriage, there is a
greater likelihood that the spouse may be able to retain the

vessel after the marriage.
Then again, if the opposing spouse can demonstrate a
financial contribution to the upkeep and maintenance of
the vessel during the marriage, the fact that the boat
belonged to an individual spouse before the marriage may
not fully determine the boat's eventual disposition.
Of course, the destiny of a vessel in a divorce could
be determined with the help of either pre or post-nuptial
agreements. It's not really the stuff of romance, but it is
practical and could avoid future pain. Again, this is a sub-
ject which might best be discussed with the assistance of
professionals.

However you cut it, I don't like to see local business
interests or customers leaving our town simply because
we have been shortsighted to the extent that we no longer
have any options.
At all costs, Fort Lauderdale must uphold its current
designation of "yachting capital of the world." .We must

Remember, a frank talk on all the issues concerning
boat ownership may not be romantic for a couple, but it
just might prevent eventual distress, and may even make
owning a vessel a more enjoyable experience for every-
one.
As can be seen, boats and marriage do not necessari-
ly go together like a "horse and carriage." Hey, maybe
that's worthy of a song, too!

Financial support needed to keep boating course afloat
I:Io7W,:IIHIIBno 1 | II |iH, ." "L.^.^...i-;"- "2. ,-^ o.-S,^,S'

Instruction takes place via a workbook, videos and
video-conferencing. Field trips take students to marinas
and boat shows, where they can talk with someone in a
marine industry career.
"We want students to have as much hands-on experi-
ence as possible," said Lopez. "This helps to create career
awareness too and we want students to be thinking at an
early age about what jobs may interest them."

But the real key to BoaterlO0's
long-term success may be how
much money the program can raise.

But the real key to BoaterlOl's long-term success
may be how much money the program can raise.
"It costs about $10 per student to bring this program
into the schools and budget cuts last year made it difficult
to reach as many teens as we had hoped," said Lopez.
She said there are a growing number of teachers who
have been trained, but financial support is needed from the
marine community to help move the outreach along.
"With just $1,000 we could reach a lot of kids," she
said. The money covers costs of materials needed in work-
books and other student materials."

This school year Boating 101
hopes to train more teachers to
certify an increasing number of
young boaters.

School in Coconut Creek, says the course also
takes a look at marine environmental issues. Last year she
taught more than 130 students BoaterlOl.
"I'm a boater myself and appreciate the value of
knowing the proper operation of such vessels. I was excit-
ed that the students were so enthusiastic about the pro-
gram and even contributed their own boating knowledge
to the course making it even better."
Dean said she also was pleased to see a number of

parents become involved in BoaterlOl and even went so
far as to take the test with their children so there was a
double certification of child and parent.
Groups or persons interested in BoaterlOl may con-
tact the program office at 954-730-7707 or log on to the
website at http://www.boaterl01.com or

Informed boating public helping to lower accidents on the water, police say

The majority of fatalities statewide for 2000 occurred
in July, with nine deaths. The most common time of day for
fatalities to occur was between 4 and 6 p.m., Palfrey said.
"That's when the alcohol starts to take affect," he
said."People start drinking at noon and by 4 p.m. they're
pretty well smashed."
In 1999, there were 58 fatalities statewide. Three
were in Broward, nine in Miami-Dade, one in Monroe and
two in Palm Beach, Palfrey said.
"I feel we've done our job to bring down these statis-
tics substantially," Palfrey said. "We hope to bring it down
even further."
Local marine patrol officers say they will continue to
step up enforcement and education efforts, both of which
they credit with greatly reducing the number of accidents
and deaths.
"There's been a combined effort to promote boating
safety and educate the public by many different agencies,"
Whitford said. "We think that it has had a positive affect."
Whitford and other law enforcement officials also

credit the county grants that gives monies from boater reg-
istration fees to pay for more hours so that officers can
patrol during peak boating times, such as evenings, holi-
days and weekends.
Fort Lauderdale City Marine Patrol Sgt. Thomas
Ogden said the grants allow for more of a police presence
on the waterways.
He said intensive enforcement is behind the citywide
drop in boating accidents, from 54 in 1999 to 45 in 20.
There were no fatalities either year, Ogden said.
"'m very encouraged by our efforts," Ogden said.

boaters are becoming more aware. I'm out on the water

very receptive to our boating safety booklets."
Frank Herhold, executive director for the Marine
Industries Association of South Florida, said he agrees
that increased public awareness from boater education
programs have been key to the lower accident and fatali-
ty rates.
"We're very pleased in the continued downward
trend," he said.
Even with less accidents, boaters shouldn't expect
any breaks on their insurance.
"It would right and reasonable, but I'm not holding
my breath on that one," Herhold said.
The amount of money paid out by insurance compa-
nies is mostly for damages to the hull, not to individuals,
said Frank Atlass, a marine insurance broker at John G.
Alden Insurance Group in Fort Lauderdale.
"These statistics have nothing to do with the cost of
repairs or replacements to the vessel," Atlass said.
Most of the claims on boats are not due to accidents
with other boaters, but to other perils such as mechanical
failure, strong winds, storms and groundings, he said.

New blood needed to preserve old boats, say history buffs

he has traveled to various states to work on a boat restora-
tion project, but ill health in recent years has kept him
closer to his Miramar home.
Though small in statue, weighing only around 125
pounds and only about five feet in height, Hughes has
muscle power to do his job, pounding away at seam after
seam.
"I want to be able to videotape what he is doing and
to record his history so we can preserve this," said
Peterson, who serves on a committee that is seeking to
establish a Fort Lauderdale Maritime Museum to record
local boating history.
"Kids today don't want to get their hands dirty," said
Hughes, explaining why fewer people now work at trades
such as his. "If they can't do something with a computer,
they don't want to try anything else."
Peterson said that the boating industry is becoming
more aware of the need to train new generations of crafts-
man, or there will be no one to help save historically
important boats in the future.
"It would be a shame to lose old wooden boats like
this one because we couldn't find someone to do special-
ized work," said Peterson of his impressive vessel, which
carries the name Magnificent Obsession.

Once the restoration is complete, which may be by
year's end, he hopes to sell the boat and use the profits as
seed money to start a local non-profit group to encourage
at-risk youth to enter the boating trade as craftsmen.
He is now active in such a program sponsored by
the New England Institution of Boat Studies, which
seeks out old wooden-boats of historic value and
arranges to have them donated to the group for restora-
tion. Skilled craftsmen are linked with at-risk young-
sters interested in boats.
The hope is that the youth, who will serve as appren-
tices of sorts, will acquire skills that will direct them to a
more positive lifestyle.
Peterson estimates the restored boat might fetch more
than $50,000. "There are boat yards willing to pay good
money for skilled craftsmen so young people interested in
this as a career can make a living at it," said Peterson. He
hopes to approach Boys Clubs and other teen groups to

seek young people wanting to examine careers as marine
craftsmen.

Once the restoration is complete,
which may be by year's end,
he hopes to sell the boat and use
the profits as seed money to start
a local non-profit group to
encourage at-risk youth to enter
the boating trade as craftsmen.
For Hughes, his career is nearing an end.
"I never pictured myself doing anything else in life,
but what I have been doing on these boats," he said. "It's
been a satisfying job to know I helped make a boat safer
and extended its lifetime."

Upscale development expected to spruce up historic area

And there are markers everywhere noting what hap-
pened at each particular spot.
At the city-run Cooley's Landing Park and Marina,
boaters launch their craft into the New River. A monu-
ment describes how William Cooley settled the area in
1824, but on. Jan. 6, 1836, local Indians attacked and
destroyed the family homestead and killed occupants,
leading to the Second Seminole War in South Florida.
That prompted Maj. William Lauderdale in 1838 to
lead a band of Tennessee volunteers to establish Fort
Lauderdale as a military post. It was named after the com-
mander. A plaque at the end of Ninth Avenue at the New
River notes the building of the first fort at that point.
A triangle-shaped, tree-shaded park at Waverly Ave.,
Palm Ave and Tequesta, established in 1987 by the neigh-
borhood civic association, was also named after him.
Another marker at the end of Las Olas Boulevard and
Harmon Avenue; notes the donation of Harmon Field in
1924 as a neighborhood playground. Long gone, in its
place sits the vacant West End School and Broward Board
of Education structures.
But developers Lennar Homes is now awaiting school
board acceptance of a bid to acquire the 13.2 acres and devel-

op it into luxury townhouses. The old school could become a
center for local artists, which Saunders predicts would anchor
that end of the neighborhood and improve its quality of life.
Lennar has submitted a $5 million bid to acquire the
site, but the school board won't be acting until after a Sept.
30 deadline when the city of Fort Lauderdale has an option
to decide whether it would want to use the land in any way.
Lennar spokesperson Lisa Maxwell said the company
is hopeful the multimillion development will move ahead.
It would certainly compliment the Symphony House,
an upcoming project that will soon bring 366 trendy high-
rise units to the river at the Avenue of the Arts bridge.
"With such upscale projects at each end of the neigh-
borhood, it will have a positive impact on what we're try-
ing to do in restoring the historic character of Sailboat
Bend and its homes," said Saunders.
The city's oldest fire station, a sprawling Spanish-style
building on Las Olas Boulevard and Palm Ave., is expected
to become a neighborhood community center once the city
moves its current operation to a new station. Fire Station
No. 8 was erected in 1927 and has a spacious front lawn.
The oldest iron swing bridge in the state is also locat-
ed in Sailboat Bend. The 1924-built span carries traffic
from Palm Avenue over the New River into the adjacent
Riverside Park neighborhood.

The oldest iron swing bridge
in the state is also located
in Sailboat Bend.

"It is a very quite and safe neighborhood," said
Sandra Flowers, who rents her home and enjoys walking
daily to the small West Side Market for treats for her son
and nephew. "People are very friendly here and it's great
for the kids."
Flowers is African-American, and the West Side
Market is operated by Middle Easterners, a small reflec-
tion of the wide range of cultures residing in the area. The
store dates back to 1919 when it was first a gas station and
later converted to a neighborhood store.
With Fort Lauderdale police headquartered in the
neighborhood, there are always patrol cars around. And,
in keeping with the character of the community, on any
given day mounted policemen proudly ride their horses
through the tiny streets.
"There are a lot of pieces in place to make the next
several years very exciting for Sailboat Bend," said
Kleinedler. "It all looks very good.

Cruising the legendary Cae Fer c t ts SEPTEMBER 2001
Cruising the legendary Cape Fear coast this summer

By TERRY CONWAY
Waterfront News Writer
Part of a quadrant of mid-Atlantic rugged shoals, the
North Carolina coastal region known as Cape Fear funnels
warm ocean currents from the Gulf Stream into the chill-
ing storm clouds of fast moving cold fronts.
The frenetic weather patterns and foreboding waters
earned Cape Fear and its trio of sister shoals the label
"Graveyard of the Atlantic" by its earliest explorers.
This is why the Intracoastal Waterway has become a
modern skipper's favored path for cruising the Carolina
coast on the way to the Chesapeake. The port city of
Wilmington is about 10 miles upstream of the mighty
Cape Fear River. The river has eddies that demand rapt
attention, as boaters navigate alongside the docks, and
strong winds frequently result in sizeable chop.
Known for its uncommon beauty, the Cape Fear Coast
first established its nautical legacy in 1732 as a major
ship-building center. It comprises the city of Wilmington
and neighboring island communities, Carolina Beach,
Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach, where gazebos,
boardwalks, piers, marinas and an amusement park foster
its nostalgic appeal.
Wilmington, the Tarheel state's leading port, takes
pride in its reputation as a leader in preservation efforts. It
boasts one of the largest districts listed in the National
Register of Historic Places, covering more than 200
blocks. Overlooking the Cape Fear River, a cluster of
Victorian, Georgian, Italianate and antebellum homes,
buildings and churches have been painstakingly restored
to their original grandeur.
Towering spires of 18th and 19th century downtown
churches spike the deep blue skies above.
Unusual Tales of Old Wilmington offers a walking
tour, spiced with tour founders John and Kim Hirchak's
serving of local history including a dash of the bizarre.

Uffaa'

The tour covers just over a mile in about two hours, start-
ing on the waterfront at Water and Market Streets, and
winds through the byways of Wilmington's historic dis-
trict. Accounts of sunken treasure, the Spanish invasion,
and heroic citizens are just a few of the tales the Hirchaks
spin for visitors.
A bustling industrial waterfront reveals huge ships
with cargos of creosote and petroleum products, fertilizer,
molasses and wood pulp constantly being unloaded. In
sharp contrast, the riverfront also offers an eclectic run of
charming bistros, shops, hotels, inns, outstanding restau-
rants, and theatrical productions at the 1858-circa Thalian
Opera House. There are plenty of vibrant nightlife venues
where you'll find everything from rock 'n roll at a cellar
bar to gentle jazz and reggae on a rooftop cafe.
Scores of speciality shops with handmade pottery,
jewelry and paintings by local artists fill the ancient tabby
walls of the Cotton Exchange. It's a group of eight
restored warehouses and mills connected by brick walks
and open courtyards. Along the boardwalks and cobble-
stones of Chandler's Wharf and Water Street, you'll find
folk art creations at American Pie and carved exotic wood
at Barouke in Old Wilmington City Market.
Port City Java and Mollye's Downtown Market are a
pair of appealing coffee shops. At Elijah's, you'll discov-
er a fascinating collection of ship models, as the staff
serves up some zesty crab dip, or try a fresh catch sand-
wich and fresh fruit as you gaze upon the mammoth bat-
tleship North Carolina looming over the trees. She was
the first U.S. warship to arrive in Pearl Harbor after the
December 7th attack, and is the most decorated battleship
of World War II. Two hour self-guided tours are available.
There are more than two dozen restaurants within
walking distance of the waterfront. Caf6 Phoenix, the
Pilot House or Hieronymous Seafood House offer family-
style dinners. The Front Street Brewery pours some won-
derful craft beers along with large portion, pub-style food
in an interior of pine flooring, tin ceilings and wrought
iron railings.
The preeminent Riverboat Landing restaurant, housed
in an 1857 dry goods warehouse, offers an impressive
menu of local catches with tables on a second-story bal-
cony overlooking the river.
The convergence of the Cape Fear River, the
Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic positions the area
as a great fishing site bottom, pier and surf. Year-round
offshore and inshore sportfishing excursions are offered by
more than 60 fishing charters and head boats with various
trip options. There are dozens of fishing guides available.

Depending on the time of the year, anglers haul in
catches of grouper dolphin, snapper, flounder, tuna,
wahoo, king mackerel, sea bass, amberjack, billfish and
trout. Surf fishing can bring catches of red drum, flounder,
puppy drum, blue fish, whiting spots and more. The estu-
arine system makes Cape Fear a prime spot for recre-
ational shellfishing. Through fall, there are tournaments
for blue marlin, king mackerel, surf fishing and panfish.
Nearby oceanside villages of Carolina Beach, Kure
Beach and Wrightsville Beach offer a carefree and relaxed
atmosphere. Accommodations range from charming
motels and luxurious B & B's/inns to cottages, efficien-
cies and condos.

To NORTH FORK NEW RIVER residents:
Dredging activity will soon be taking place on
the New River. The City of Ft Lauderdale is
dredging a 40' navigational Channel from
the confluence of the North and South Forks
of the New River up to the Argyle Canal and
from north of Broward Blvd bridge to
Sistrunk Blvd. The channel from Argyle Canal
south is planned to be approximately six feet
deep at mean low water.
At the same time, Broward County will
dredging in conjunction with their environ-
mental North Fork Restoration Project. The
County has further agreed to dredge down
to the south end of the Argyle Canal to
remove silt left by a previous County
dredging activity.
This project is not for the purpose of
canal dredging, which is under the purview of
the City. Canals can be dredged by the City
under its maintenance program or by private
contractors at any time.
The deeper channel will eliminate
vessel damage from severe shoaling, provide
trouble-free access for larger vessels, and
help maintain property values.
If you have knowledge of underwater
navigational hazards near your dock or
want information regarding the project call
City Engineer Asaad Akar (954) 609-3262.

Water's Edge transforms ordinary life into the extraordinary.
A limited collection of 64 luxurious residences is designed
against the dramatic backdrop of Fort Lauderdale, each with
the ambiance that only panoramic waterfront living can
inspire. *. The extraordinary begins with two- and three-
bedroom residences of approximately 1,650 to 2,100 square
feet. It then culminates with magnificent penthouses
and tower suites of up to 4,000 square feet. +a, Water's Edge

overlooks nothing (but the Ocean and Intracoastal, of course),
and so expect granite kitchens, marble baths with whirlpool
tubs, 9-foot ceilings, expansive terraces and floor-to-ceiling
glass windows. -* Flawlessly landscaped public spaces,
Intracoastal promenade, free-form waterfront pool, fitness
room and His and Her saunas. s This fabulous location brings
you close to the cultural arts, world-class shopping and dining,
and closer than you have ever been to the extraordinary!
