Mega-yacht marina proposed on Fort Lauderdale beach
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Proposed plans to raze a small motel and a neighbor-
ing private home to build new docking facilities that will
accommodate mega-yachts has been drawing both praise
On one side, supporters say the proposal by the St.
Regis Hotel will add luster and increase property values
on Fort Lauderdale beach.
Opponents, namely residents of nearly complexes,
charge the docking facility will block their view of the
Intracoastal Waterway. They also fear the docks will be
active round-the-clock with large vessels and-their crews.
The plans by St. Regis are in the early stages. City
staff is still reviewing the issue.
Hotel officials have already received approval to
build a 23-story luxury hotel on the beach. A ground-
breaking is planned for sometime this year. They want to
construct the docking facility oh two parcels, overlooking
A private home sits on one piece of land. The other
site is occupied by the Wish You Were Here Inn, at 7 N.
Birch Road. Construction plans also call for a six-story
extension of the oceanfront hotel on the Intracoastal site.
Fred Taylor, who owns the inn with his wife, Greta,
sat in on talks with the developer for the past two years.
The inn, which has 15 units and three slips, was built
in the 1940s. The Taylors purchased it in 1981.
"It will be good for the community, good for the neigh-
borhood and add to the growth and development of the
area," said Fred Taylor of the proposed docking facility.
"The inn is an old facility. The new building will do more
to enhance the surrounding property values, same as the
current development of Beach Place and Jackson Tower."
Besides, the city could use more dock space, espe-
cially for mega-yachts, Taylor said.
Marinas in the area that presently have space for
mega-yachts include Bahia Mar, Pier 66, Hall of Fame,
Marriott and the city-owned Las Olas Marina, said Frank
Herhold, executive director of Marine Industries
Association of South Florida.

But in an age when bigger seems to be better, there is
a critical need for more mega-yacht docking space,

Boaters get hooked on helping kids get the chance to fish
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Once a year, Joe Potter sets out to sea in his 27-foot Ocean
Master center console with some very special guests on board.
Potter, a licensed yacht captain from Wilton Manors, is
one of several boaters donating time and a vessel to the Big
Brothers Big Sisters of Broward Fishing Tournament.
The competition was started by John Weller, a broker
with Richard Bertram Yachts at the Bahia Mar Marina in
Fort Lauderdale. The idea behind the event is for boaters to
take the kids, their family members and volunteers from Big
Brothers Big Sisters, out for a day of deep sea fishing.
For many of the youngsters, this is their only chance to
participate in the sport, Weller said.
"Everyone has a lot of fun," he said. "These kids look
forward to the tournament. It's something they don't do
everyday. It's something different."
This year's 22nd annual tournament will be held on June
2. Boaters and their passengers will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the
Bahia Mar Marina where they will fish until 3 p.m. A barbe-
cue or pizza awards party will follow, with trophies handed
out for largest, smallest and most fish caught. .
The number of kids who will get the chance to partici-
pate depends on the amount of boaters who get involved.
The tournament draws between 25 and 35 boats. Depending
on vessel's size, each captain is asked to take two to three

children and their mentors on board, Weller said.
"We usually have about 60 kids and 60 big brothers and
sisters,"Weller said. "But every year there is a waiting list of
kids who want to take part in the tournament and can't
because there aren't enough vessels. We can always use

kids fishing for the June 2 event.
Brothers Big Sisters bring their own sandwiches,
Potter has been showing up at the tournament for the
past seven years. "All it took was one time and I was
hooked," he said. "It's wonderful. It's a very satisfying day.
It's only a few hours and it's just good fun. You see these
kids light up when they catch a fish."
The participants always leave with lots of great memories.
The only thing they don't go home with is fish, Weller said.
Organizers tell the children to practice catch and release.

I think Fort Lauderdale Vice Mayor
Gloria Katz is doing a decent job.
Maybe my opinion is biased, consider-
ing that I've known Gloria since the early
1980s when she was an editor at the long
defunct Broward Tribune, and I a snot-
nosed kid looking for my first newspaper
job. She not only became my editor, she
turned into my second mother.
So if I am biased, it's only because I
speak from personal experience.
For years I watched her take an issue,
oppose it at first, analyze it, and then even-
tually figure out a compromise that would
serve the best interests of everyone.
Judging by her recent actions on the
Fort Lauderdale City commission, it's still
business as usual for Gloria.
In March, she took a stand to stop the
upcoming spring boat show from being
held in George English Park because.she
believed that a neighborhood park was no
place for a commercial venue. By dis-
agreeing with the proposal, she went up
against the city's boating industry and her
fellow city commissioners, who had decid-
ed to support the show's relocation from
Bahia-Mar to the park.
Gloria reversed her decision against
the site after it became apparent she could-
n't win. She asked for and got concessions
from the boat show's sponsors. While it's
no great feat to back down in a no-win sit-
uation, what I find notable is that Gloria
showed the guts to oppose the boating
establishment at all.
In a separate issue that affects the
. same area, she once again considered the
needs of the community at large over the
vocal few. In recent months, commission-
ers toyed with banning water-skiing within
city borders. Besides the ocean and small
enclaves of areas along the Intracoastal
Waterway, the only place water-skiing
was allowed in the city was on a section
of the Middle River, adjacent to Sunrise
The pastime can be a hazardous
prospect to one's health, especially in this
area where speed boats flying off the
Intracoastal can collide head-on with
skiers venturing into a speeding boat's
path. Not to mention the force of a rough
wake causing a skier to wipe out into
another nearby vessel, or thrown into a
cement siding or dock.
Yet, as long as there have been boats,
ropes and fiberglass boards with attached
rubber shoes to slip feet into, there have
In early April when local enthusiasts
got wind that the city commission had
given tentative approval to a ban on
waterskiing in the Middle River, they
showed up at city hall mad as a cat that
had just been tossed into a lake.
Among the group: a 6-year-old kid (a
brilliant move for any group trying to get
a point across to elected officials); local
businessmen and waterfront residents.
All in all, they spilled out of city hall dur-
ing the April 5 meeting, lending enough
weight to sink a small cruise ship.
Don't think the mass rally didn't
weigh heavily on the vice mayor's deci-
sion to cast one of the votes in favor of
turning over the tentative ban. When she
saw the numbers in front of her, her
wheels started to turn in a direction that
would ensure recreational water-skiing
space for everybody.
"There is no ideal place," Gloria was
quoted as saying after the commission
unanimously decided not to outlaw
water-skiing in on the Middle River. "But

if everyone is saying they want water-skiing, then we have
to compromise a little bit. We need the gumption to allow
this to happen. It's only fair that one area doesn't get all

Gloria.not only figured out that water-skiing should
be allowed, but that the number of supporters who came
to the meeting indicated a need for more permitted areas.
So, the sport is still allowed on the Middle River, and

In the simplest scenario, the vessel owner will set up a
fund with the court for the value of the vessel at the time of
the petition, and those proceeds will eventually be distrib-
uted to the parties who incurred a loss from the incident.
So, as it stands, it appears that the passengers of the S.S.
Minnow may not see a very large payout for their injuries.
Is there a lesson to be learned from their plight? It pays
to keep in mind that dealing with limitation of liability cases
can be very complex and should not be handled without the

Weller claims the event is the oldest charity fishing
tournament in Fort Lauderdale. He established the competi-
tion because he wanted to do something for the community.
It's not the first time that Weller has been involved in an
outreach project. While living in New York, he was active in
a non-profit group that matched suburban families with
inner-city children. The families would take in the kids for
Weller moved to South Florida in 1976 and started
working at Bertram. "I thought, a lot of customers own a lot
of nice fishing boats," he said. "I decided to get them to do
something nice for the kids."
Nancy Park, a project services specialist with Big
Brothers Big Sisters of Broward Inc., said the tournament is
one of four agency-wide events held each year that involve
the children, volunteers and staff. The others are a holiday
party, a volunteer appreciation day and a summer picnic,

Small beach inn to be razed to make room for luxury beach hotel
i'MiR I,^ll"11Mial I
But not everyone is pleased. Paul Levine, manager of
Portofino on the Intracoastal, said residents at the 52-unit
condo across the street from the Wish You Were Here Inn
will continue to speak out against the St. Regis project.
Other residents in neighboring complexes have also
voiced their opposition, he said.
Portofino has 12 slips, but none of the boats exceed
60 feet and there are height restrictions, he said.
"The length of the dock they are proposing would
bring in very large ships and crews," Levine said. "There
will be activities going on 24 hours. The facility will also
block the view of the Intracoastal."
The proposed docking facility tied to the St. Regis is
guaranteed to attract the mega-yacht caliber of customer,
adding to the numbers of mega-yachts arriving annually,
Minka McDonald, spokesperson
for the St. Regis Hotel and
Residences Fort Lauderdale,
said the company is waiting to see
what the city allows before it can
determine the marina's size.
"There are presently 428 vessels 80 feet and longer
currently under construction, representing a 31 percent
increase of yachts produced in 2000," he said.
Industry officials anticipate that Fort Lauderdale will
continue to be a popular destination for leisure, re-fit, pro-
visioning and other service needs."We need to look to the
future if Fort Lauderdale is to remain the yachting capital
of the world," Herhold said.
Every slip counts in the whole scheme of things, he said.
But just how many mega-yachts the proposed dock-
ing facilities at the St. Regis can accommodate remains
unknown. Minka McDonald, spokesperson for the St.
Regis Hotel and Residences Fort Lauderdale, said the
company is waiting to see what the city allows before it
can determine the marina's size.
St. Regis is a collection of five-star hotels, with loca-
tions around the world. The site in Fort Lauderdale will be
the first in Florida, McDonald said.
She agreed that Fort Lauderdale needs more docking
facilities. "Some of our guests will have mega-yachts or
will be chartering boats," McDonald said. "When they
come to the St. Regis, we want them to dock right at the
hotel. Our goal is to make everything as convenient and
seamless as possible. We don't want to make guests go out
of their way by having to dock their boats at another facil-
ity, further away."

Maryland's easy-going Eastern Shore
Skipjacks, quaint fishing villages
and lifestyle reflect area's rich
By TERRY CONWAY
Waterfront News Writer
Skipjacks are a vanishing breed. First launched at the
turn of the 20th century, the Chesapeake Bay workboats
were an integral part of an oyster harvest that once assumed
all the frenzy of the California Gold Rush. Recognized for
its beamy open deck, skipjacks were built to brave the win-
tertime rigors of dredging oysters under sail.
But as the bay's ecology and the overall economy sput-
tered in the 1930s and '40s, skipjack numbers tumbled.
When the craft were nominated to the National Register in
1985, a mere 35 vessels remained.
Today, the number of skipjacks still working the bay
has shrunk to less than a dozen.
Maryland's EasternShore Dogwood Harbor serves as
the home port of the largest skipjack fleet in North America.
They have no winches, just manpower and blocks and tack-
le. Skipjacks are favored for their abilities in light wind and
excellent performance in heavy winds. On a good day, the
crew of the 70-foot H. M. Krentz, which carries almost
2,000 square feet of sail, can catch about 80 bushels of the
wintertime 150 oyster bushel limit.
During the warmer months, up to 32 visitors can step
aboard the H. M. Krenz and savor the experience the life of
a waterman, help haul up the sails, learn about dredging
oysters, marvel at the osprey, heron and waterfowl, as well
as take in the alluring tidewater and historic towns.
The Eastern Shore is a swatch of Maryland topography
dotted with quaint fishing villages and marinas stretching
along the Chesapeake Bay, flanked by farmlands, rolling
hills and picturesque horse farms. It's a leisurely drive from
Baltimore, Washington and Philadelphia.
The protected and preserved enclave is celebrated for
its restaurants' enticing aromas of steamed crabs and fresh-
baked breads, a myriad of shops, galleries, enchanting inns,
B&Bs, and museums as well as well-worn bike paths and
plenty of ways to get out on the water.
Names such as St. Michaels, Tilghman Island, Oxford
and Easton are what most people think of when they talk
about the Eastern Shore.
Filled with colonial charm, the quaint maritime village
of St. Michaels attracts thousands of sailing enthusiasts each
summer as tall-masted boats race around the buoys in the
broad Miles River.
Tree-lined streets, beautifully restored and historic
homes, restaurants, specialty and antique shops B&Bs ele-
gantly line Talbot Street.
Just beyond the glitter of the year-round getaway andt
attractions, the gritty life of the area's waterman unfolds -
oyster dredgers, crabbers, fishermen and boat builders
Recognized for their open
beamy deck, skipjacks
Were built to brave the
wintertime rigors of oyster
dredging on Maryland's
squeezing out a hardscrabble living from the bay as they
have done for generation after generation. Such tough, hard-
bitten waterman were featured in the epic novel
"Chesapeake," by author James Michner who leased a
ranch-style home near St. Michaels.
A visit to the Maritime Museum on the waterfront tells
the history and tradition of the bay. The Steamboat Building
exhibit deals with the use of the bay as a highway and the
change from sailing to propelled vessels. In the boatwright
shop, visitors can watch craftsmen restore and maintain the
museum's boat collection.
When hungry, stop by Carpenter's Street Salon, a
cheery, high-ceiling spot where locals chow down on burg-
ers, fries and delectable crab cakes. Down the road a piece,
you'll find Baines, a free-and-easy diner that serves up over-
stuffed sandwiches, subs and tasty homemade chicken noo-

THE SOUTH FLORIDA
., .K VW
Madison's West End on Talbot Street
offers an art-deco style with bright original
paintings and a menu. that includes duck
breast with savory peppercorn sauce and
Pasta New Orleans with sausage, duck,
shrimp, peppers and tomatoes.
About 15 winding miles west, then
south at the end of Route 33 lies Tilghman
Island. Neatly tucked away, it reveals a near
perfect balance of nature, water and people.
Geese paddle down the river, while egrets
find haven in marsh grasses, and gulls
swoop to snatch what the fishermen lost.
A landmark on Tilghman Island is the
bridge connecting the mainland to Knapps
Narrows, a spot that's appeared on maps
since the late 1600s. A unique residential
house style (circa 1890), referred to as the
"V" shape with three gables on the front, has
become a Tilghman classic.
Chefs here blend the freshest seafood
with zesty local produce serving up not only
regional cuisine, but terrific dishes splashed
with island and European touches.
Harrison's Chesapeake Inn entertained
its first guests 10 years after the Civil War
fell silent. It is renowned for a soothing
atmosphere and great sport fishing, boasting
the largest fleet of fishing boats on the bay.
Late afternoon, the inn's picnic tables groan
under the weight of huge platters of steamed
crabs, pit beef and pork flaming on the
grille, mountains of corn on the cob, pitch-
ers of icy beer and brewed tea.
There are plenty of choices for intimate,
carefree accommodations that evoke the
warmth and charm of the island.
Proprietors will gladly arrange sunset
sails, kayak tours, nature cruises, horseback
riding or a skipjack excursion. You can set
sail on one down at Dogwood Harbor,
where each morning commercial watermen
renew a pact with the bay that has created
the legendary maritime history and lifestyle
of the Eastern Shore.
For more information on the Eastern
Shore, call the Talbot County Office of
Tourism at 410-770-8000 or visit its website
