School of thought: Marine fair aims to teach ocean awareness

National Week of the Ocean
kicks off April 27
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Nearly 1,500 marine projects made by private and
public school students throughout Broward County will
be on display later this month at the International Game
Fish Hall of Fame and Museum in Dania Beach.
The school marine fair is the centerpiece of Broward-
based events commemorating National Week of the
Ocean. Created by youngsters in pre-kindergarten through
12th grade, marine-related art, science experiments, pho-
tography and poetry will be on display from April 27 to 29.
A seafood cooking contest.kicks 'offevents, taking
place 6 to 8 p.m. on April 26.
Entries will be selected and sent to the fair by judges
at each participating school. Lee Kalvaitis, a seventh and
eighth grade science teacher at Nova Middle School in
Davie, said the competition serves as a significant tool in
creating awareness in young people about the marine
environment.
"Since we live in an area with water all around, I
think it's very important the students understand what is in
the water, why we should protect the marine life and the
importance of the water quality so we don't pollute it and
overfish," Kalvaitis said. "If they learn to have a love and
interest in ocean life, then when they become adults they
will vote for the correct proposals and be people who are
for preservation of the oceans."
Nova Middle will hold its own marine fair in early
April to select projects to be submitted to the museum's
exhibit. About 1,000 students in grades sixth to eighth are
expected to compete, Kalvaitis said.

which students used to perform water quality testing and our st

Ft. Lauderdale spring boat show moves to greener pastures

George English Park to host
this year's event on a trial basis
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
The Fort Lauderdale spring boat show is moving to a
new location and will be getting a new name.
The re-christened, Boats in the Park, will be relocated
from the Bahia Mar Resort and Marina on Fort Lauderdale
Beach to George English Park, which sits on the Middle
River at 1101 Bayview Dr. in eastern Fort Lauderdale.
Fort Lauderdale city commissioners gave promoters
approval to hold the event there at a recent meeting in
March. The show is scheduled to run May 18-20.
Supporters say the park should provide more space for
activities and easily accessible parking.
"Bahia Mar was not a good fit," said Frank Herhold,
executive director of the Marine Industries Association of
South Florida. "The park's configuration is much more
favorable. I'm happy that the show is being moved. I think
it's a natural. It will have something for everyone."
Organizers had long been scouring the city's water-
front for an appropriate site. George English was picked
because of its atmosphere, water accessibility and location
in a high traffic area, said Kaye Pearson, president of
Show Management Inc.

Leaning Posts T-Tops

The Galleria Mall, located across the street, will pro-
vide free parking to visitors and help market the show,
said Pearson, whose company produces the event.
Free parking is expected to be a major perk. When the
show was held at Bahia Mar, patrons had to pay $10 to

"The Bahia Mar location was not appropriate any
more for the product being displayed in the spring show,"
Pearson said. "It has a large marina designed for larger
boats and the facility was too expensive. People come
expecting to see the fall show and the spring show is much
smaller."

Popular activities will continue at revamped spring boat show

Over the years, attendance for the spring show has
also dropped. Pearson could not supply figures, or say
how much money the event lost by being at the resort.
But organizers will continue to hold the fall boat
show, which is geared toward large vessels, at Bahia Mar.
The spring show is centered around small boats, Pearson
said
It is unknown whether the spring show will remain a
fixture at George English.
Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Gloria Katz
voiced strong concerns about holding the event there.
"If the show returns will be determined by whether
organizers can return the park to its original condition,
control traffic and make the neighbors happy," Katz said.
The park is undergoing major renovations including
refurbishing the public boat ramps and installing a walk-
ing path and putting in a new roller hockey rink, she said.
"They are moving a commercial entity into a residen-
tial area and I was concerned about the traffic and what it
will do to the park, as well as the neighborhood immedi-
ately surrounding the park," Katz said.
Katz, who did vote in favor of giving the boat show a
one-year contract to be in the park, said she would have
initially preferred that the activities for children and farm-

seminars and the Plywood Regatta

ilies be held at George English.
"Selling the boats should be done at a commercial
venue," Katz said.
Katz had asked the commission to approve two stipu-
lations to the boat show's contract. The first, a request to
increase the $10,000 performance bond to protect the park
from damages to $60,000, was denied.
But a request to require boat show promoters to
donate $20,000 toward park and neighborhood improve-
ments was approved. Of that amount, $5,000 will go to
the Coral Ridge Homeowners Association for planting
flowers in the medians. The remainder will go to park,
Katz said.
The association favors having the show in the park.
Show organizers agreed to have police patrol the streets to
prevent parking on lawns, install signs stating that the
streets are for local traffic only and give out free admis-

sion tickets for all members, said Paul Dooley, an associ-
ation board member.
"We did have concerns that a brand new park would
be destroyed, but we worked through all of those things,"
Dooley said. "They hope to make this an annual event.
Obviously, they will have to return the park back to its
original, brand new condition."
Dooley hopes the park's renovations will be complet-
ed in time for the show. City officials have set a timetable
for completion by the end of April.
S"I'm hoping that it will get done and this will be a
nice show," he said.
Herhold and Pearson both say that they see no reason
why the show can't be successful in its new location.
"I predict there will be a lot of happy dealers and ven-
dors," Herhold said.
Attendees can expect many of the same popular activ-
ities such as the fishing clinics for kids, adult seminars
and the Plywood Regatta boat building competition, he
said.
"After 14 years at the Bahia Mar Marina, it's time for
the spring show to step'out from the shadow of the fall
show the world's largest boat show and become a
unique, annual community event in its own right,"
Herhold said.

Dive industry's precautions stave off governmental intervention

*Get familiar with your scuba equipment and be
"anal retentive" about its upkeep, following a mainte-
nance schedule. If any piece of equipment doesn't seem
to be working properly, don't use it.
Treat your equipment as if it's the only thing keep-
ing you alive under water (duh!).
*If you're going on a vessel with a divemaster, follow
instructions. Don't argue with the divemaster over itiner-
ary, figuring you'll "just do your own thing underwater
anyway." Instead, don't go on the dive! It's better in the
end to fight over a bad vacation than a dive injury.
*Plan your dive and dive your plan. This is the old
litany of dive instructors and very good advice, along with
"never dive alone." If any situation ever seems more diffi-
cult or strenuous than you really feel like handling that
day, just don't do it.
Hopefully, by following these tips you can avoid get-
ting trapped in "deep water" when you dive.

By the way, modem certification programs don't
make you retrieve your equipment from 12 feet of water.
On the other hand, it was quite a confidence builder.
Thanks, dad!

world island, however, I wouldn't take the Mercruiser 6-
Drive out for a spin in heavy seas.
Anyway, that's basically the show. It airs at 11 a.m.
every Sunday morning, and the announcer pitches the lat-
est model boats while towing and mechanical experts give
tips on boat maintenance, boat security and even how to
hook a boat trailer to an HD Silverado truck.

Spouting detail after detail on every boat, Boattest
Reports also recommends the perennial dos and don't of
boating. It even quotes prices, although if you noticed, I
didn't give any out here. After all, if you're like me and
you've got to ask 'how much?' you can't even afford to
watch.
Jeff Harrell is a freelance writer. This column
explores people and issues in south Florida's boating
communities.

tion on all levels, she said.
"There's a multi-discipline approach," Blank said.
"Students might gain more interest by writing a poem or
drawing a picture, versus just reading about the subject in
a textbook."
Cynthia Hancock, co-founder of National Week of
the Ocean, said she is impressed by what the young peo-
ple do for the event.
"Their projects are always outstanding," said
Hancock, whose non-profit National Week of the Ocean
Inc. organizes the fair. "They really touch you deep inside.
You can see they are very concerned about the ocean."
The countywide fair began in 1981. Until recently, it
was held at the Galleria Mall in Fort Lauderdale. The
event moved last year to the International Game Fish Hall
of Fame, Hancock said.
"The museum is a learning center," she said. "We felt
it was a more appropriate spot."
Hancock has watched the Week of the Ocean School
Marine Fair grow since its start at the American Heritage
School, a private college prepatory school based in
Plantation.
Hancock and her husband, Dane, presented their pro-
posal to American Heritage in 1980. A year later, the fair
was expanded and opened to schools throughout Broward.
Hancock initially got the idea to host the event while
attending an ocean technology conference in California.
At the time, she was public relations director for
American Heritage. She was attending the technology
conference with her husband, an ocean engineer.
"I heard a speaker say that students might have mis-
conceptions about the ocean if taught about it at [too]
early an age," Hancock said. "I disagreed and when I went
back to work, I made a proposal to the school about hav-
ing a week that was dedicated to the ocean."
Since then, Week of the Ocean has generated com-

munity interest and was recognized as as national event by
the U.S. Congress in 1984.
These days, Hancock estimates that about 300,000
people are reached through the school fair competition
and other marine activities in Broward.
For the local festival, the National Week of the Ocean
organization partners with other groups in the area, which
are holding marine-related activities, she said.
"By working with other groups countywide, we are
able to expand conscience of the importance of the marine
world on our lives," Hancock said.
This year's festival began on March 31 with the annu-
al waterway clean-up. It will conclude on June 9 with the
Ocean Watch Reef Sweep, Hancock said.
The National Week of the Ocean volunteer staff also
distributes awards to high school students and adults for
their efforts toward creating marine awareness. A ceremony

for high school students will be held on May 6 at Fern Forest
Nature Center in Pompano Beach. An awards ceremony for
adults will be on June 14 with a location to be announced.
Other National Week of the Ocean activities include
establishing a fund for scholarships and youth programs
in memory of Hancock's mother, Hazel Pisini, a long-time
volunteer with the group. So far, $1,000 has been raised,
Hancock said.

Q: What's NEW at Yacht Equipment & Parts?

A: NEW Management...NEW Products...NEW Ideas!

Bow Thrusters

Shore Power Conditioning Marine Appliances

DC Thrusters work very
well on vessels under
fifty (50) feet, but
have limitations on e e
H.P. ranges and
duty cycle.
Hydraulic Power
Units solve this
problem, but create more
problems with installation of expensive
hydraulic systems, continuous maintenance
and the potential for hose failures.
Yacht Equipment & Parts has teamed up with
WESMAR to now offer AC powered systems
from your generator. Continuous duty,
variable speed, maintenance free, 10 H.P. to
100 H.P. to fit all applications.

Why is this important to you??? Maybe you
would like to do some World traveling and
would like to use Dockside Power regardless
of the power available, or maybe you want to
purchase a European Vessel you love, but it is
set up for 50 Hz operation or maybe you just
want stable, consistent 240 volts regardless of
how poor the voltage is at some remote Island
Marina.
ASEA Power Systems does it all.:Any voltage
or frequency IN with stable voltage and
frequency OUT. These
systems are smaller,
lighter, more efficient
and more competitive
than any other systems .' ..-._ '
in the world. i
Yacht Equipment &
Parts can design the right package for
your 45' vessel to world cruising Mega Yachts.

Georgia's Barrier Islands

Pristine marshlands, boating
and charm define former
playground to the rich
By TERRY CONWAY
Waterfront News Writer
Everyone needs a private playground. In the late 19th
century, tycoons like John D. Rockefeller, J. P. Morgan
and the Vanderbilts bought a barrier island nestled off the
southern Georgia coast. They wintered at Jekyll Island,
where they built lavish "cottages" and a palatial turreted
clubhouse.
The rich and the famous regularly raced their yachts
through the channel that led to the clubhouse's wharf. J. P.
Morgan's 504-foot vessel, Corsair II, laid claim as the
swiftest; its arrival at the Jekyll Island Club announced
by cannon fire.
Times changed, fortunes flowed elsewhere and the
last club member died in 1938. The moguls' offspring
found the stately Victorian compound not to their "jet-set"
liking, so in 1947 they unloaded the island, the club and
its mansions to the state of Georgia for $675,000.
Today, historic mansions, pretty beaches and the nat-
ural surroundings of Jekyll Island and the surrounding
Golden Isles, offers visitors the choice of doing it all, or
doing nothing at all.
The name Golden Isles refers to Jekyll Island, St.
Simons, Sea Island, and Little St. Simons, just off the
mainland city of Brunswick, 75 miles south of Savannah.
Dynamic in nature, the barrier islands continually
change, shaped by the powerful forces of winds, currents,
waves, storms and tides. Their pristine beauty is reflected
in such remarkable sights such as the Marshes of Glynn.
The salt marshes are a fragile yet enormously pro-
ductive ecosystem, considered some of the most exten-
sive and productive marshlands in the world. They are an
essential support system for Georgia's thriving seafood
industry. The sun's -energy and the nutrients from the
rivers are captured by the marsh grass and microscopic

Fishing opportunities abound in Georgia's barrier
islands, which also includes St. Simons, Sea Island
and Little St. Simons.
plants that support the food chains for shrimp, fish, oys-
ters and crabs.
Fishing opportunities are good amid the vast coastal
ecosystem. A short run off the Golden Isles beaches, the
natural and manmade reefs teem with kingfish, mackerel,
Spanish mackerel, cobia, bonita and amberjack. Light
tackle, 20 pound line is used to maximize enjoyment.
Bottom feeders here include grouper, snapper, black sea
bass. Prime time to book a charter is from May through
September.
Further offshore, shark and tarpon can usually be
hooked; best time being from mid-summer through
September.
The Golden Isles Striking Fishing Tournament is held
May 3-5 at the Golden Isles Marina where top anglers

bring in catches of yellow fin tuna, wahoo and dolphin.
Look for the Kingfish Classic June 22-23.
Charter boats are typically licensed to carry up to six
passengers, plus crew members. While somewhat smaller
than other coastal regions, it allows captains to take the best
advantage of the winding rivers, the inlets and open waters.
Two marinas sit on both sides of the Jekyll Island
high-rise bridge. The channel is dredged to 12 feet but
tends to shoal, so call ahead for docking instructions due
to currents. Dockmasters advise to work with the tide,
which ranges from six to nine feet.
Boaters can anchor south of the Jekyll Harbor
Marina, then dinghy in. There is a $10 per day fee to use
its facilities.
The Golden Isles were first explored in the 1500s by
Spanish soldiers seeking gold. In 1742, British General
James Oglethorpe's troops defeated the Spanish at the
Battle of the Bloody Marsh on St. Simons, helping deter-
mine the course of colonial history. Later, the antebellum
era flourished as sea island cotton became king, and
sprawling plantations operated along the coast until the
Civil War.
These days, newcomers still find the sea isles unhur-
ried and unspoiled. Many ride horseback along the rib-
bon-smooth beaches where herons and white egrets soar,
and loggerhead sea turtles nest in their natural habitat.
Nature trails wind through massive live oaks, blazing
azaleas, wisteria and mysterious resurrection ferns, home
to raccoons, wild turkeys or deer that were originally
imported to hunt.

St. Simons
The largest of the Isles (pop. 18,000), Gen.
Oglethorpe established Georgia's first military outpost,

But Don't Take Our Word For It...

"With his (Claiborne Young's) five volumes on a shelf... you can start at
the North Carolina border and cruise all the way to New Orleans. You'll
probably need a light list and an almanac ... but you certainly won't need
any other guide books."
Coastal Cruising Magazine

"It is virtually safe to say that if it isn't written up in Young's Cruising
Guide to Western Florida, it doesn't exist... It's kind of like an American
Express card for boaters ... you shouldn't leave home without it."

Morgan Stinemetz, Sarasota Herald

"The best book we could find covering Florida's east coast is Claibome
Young's Cruising Guide to Eastern Florida."
Practical Sailor

"The first feeling one gets upon perusing Claiborne Young's Cruising
Guide to Coastal South Carolina and Georgia is that the author must
have lived here, so complete and detailed are his descriptions of our local
waterways."
The Island Packet, Hilton Head

"Young's explanations are so thorough, it's like having another hand on
the tiller."
Mississippi Press

"He knows every harbor, bay and sandbar on the North Carolina coast
like the veins on the back of his hand."

Golden Isles unhurried pace

offers visitors a quiet reprieve

I M11 N,111l2 0lTIVAiVA
Fort Frederica, now a national monument.
Later, the rock-hard island oaks were
milled here for use in the Revolutionary
War. John and Charles Wesley, the
Methodist church founders, held services
under the oak trees where the present
structure of Christ Church, built in 1844,
now stands. At the southern tip is the
Village, St. Simons' compact hub that's
home to a fishing pier, clustered shops, a
coastal history museum and a fishing pier.
Check out Island's Rock Cafd, Rafters
Blues Club and Ziggy Mahoney's for good
food, drinks and live music.

Little St. Simons
Accessible only by boat, it's the north-
ernmost of the Golden Isles and definitely
the most secluded. In 1908, timber magnate
Philip Berozheimer bought the island as a
source of red cedar used in the manufacture
of pencils, while his family enjoyed its pri-
vate hunting and fishing preserve. Today,
the island is open to a limited number of
guests who relax in the serene surroundings
of its 10,000 acres of pristine woodlands.

Sea Island
Seaward of St. Simons Island and
accessible from there by causeway, it's an
all-year resort in a lush garden setting of
flowers, shrubs and ancient oaks, palms
and pines. It's been a favorite spot of pres-
idents, from Calvin Coolidge to George
Bush. Located midway between the
Atlantic Ocean and the Marsh of Glynn,
it's best known for the Cloister, honored as
one of the world's great hotels.

Jekyll Island
Now a state park, the quiet island

offers miles of white sand beaches and 20
miles of walking/bicycle trails, formerly
carriage roads which circle the island amid
canopies of live oaks, trumpet vines, jas-
mine and wisteria. Over on the more-pro-
tected creek side of the island sits the
Jekyll Island Club's 240 acres.
By 1900, its membership was reputed
to represent one-sixth of the world's
wealth. America's elite enjoyed hunting,
communal dining lawn parties, carriage
rides, and beach picnics.
White-clad tennis and crochet players
once competed on manicured green lawns.
The string of 33 "cottages" have been
faithfully redone featuring turn-of-the cen-
tury furnishings, photos, faux marble fire-
places, elaborate woodwork and gasoliers
(gas and electric chandeliers).
Restored in 1986 as a four-star resort,
the rambling Victorian clubhouse was
designed with a fanciful entrance gateway,
verandas, bay windows and striking chim-
ney embellishments. Its riverfront lobby
beckons its by-gone era with heart-pine
paneling, windows with leaded art glass
inserts and a boar's head mounted over the
fireplace.
Beyond the elegant resorts, the
Jekyll's accommodations include ocean-
front villas, cottage rentals and camping.
There's a dozen or so restaurants, every-
thing from Blackbeard's Seafood to Zach's
Eats and Treats. Live music rings out at
Seajay's Waterfront Cafe, Remmington's
Bar & Grille and the Italian Fisherman.
Whatever your pleasure, visitors to the
Golden Isles are sure to find something
enjoyable at every turn, and a little bit of
history in every gentle ocean breeze.
