Museum's display educates visitors to

the importance of marine life

The Museum of Discovery and Science
in Fort Lauderdale offers many exhibits
that show off south Florida's marine life,
including Boomer, a 72-pound
bumblebee grouper that usually manages
to draw a crowd of spectators.
The importance of such sea life is
discussed in the movie Into the Deep
which recently debuted at the museum.

Film helping to promote plight of coral reef

By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
A movie about a kelp forest in California might help
save the coral reef in our own backyard.
At least that's what local environmentalists are
hoping when visitors "take the plunge" at the Museum
of Discovery and Science's newest attraction.
Into the Deep, the latest feature being shown in the
facility's adjoining Blockbuster IMAX 3-D Theater, is
giving movie moviegoers the thrill of scuba diving
without getting wet.
The film lets people have a close-up, underwater
view of marine life in a kelp forest growing off the
Southern California coast.
The movie debuted on March 1 and is scheduled to
run through the summer. So far, it has been playing to
mostly sell-out crowds, said Rochelle Darman, marketing
manager for the museum, at 401 SW Second St. in Fort
Lauderdale.
Preservationists are pleased that Into the Deep is
getting such a good response.
"This is a marvelous opportunity to instruct and

celebration taking place April 19.

alert the public to the treasures that we have right here,"
said Joel Biddle, education director for Reef Relief, a non
profit group in Key West.
South Florida's coral barrier reef, which spans 165
miles from Palm Beach to the Dry Tortugas, is the third
largest of its kind in the world and the only one on the
North American continental shelf, Biddle said.
But the reef is in trouble. Its future is being threatened
bycarelessboaters, divers and snorkelers andbypollution
from sewage run-off, he said.
Robert N. Ginsburg, a marine geology professor,

refers to the reefs as one of the sea's most diverse eco-
systems.
Without them, South Florida's tourist economy
would suffer greatly and its shoreline would lack
protection from storms, said Ginsburg, who teaches at
the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine
Atmospheric Science.
Ginsburg is doing his best to inform the public about
the reef's importance by chairing the International Year
of the Reef Committee.
The privately-funded organization is dedicated to
research and education. Among those active in the group
is the Museum of Discovery and Science, which has been
declared an official International Year of the Reef site.
"The museum has taken a leading role in educating
the public," Ginsburg said. "I'm very impressed with
what they have."
Among the museum's exhibits is a 2,700 gallon tank
that holds the world's largest captive Atlantic coral reef.
Since its unveiling four and ahalf years ago, the aquarium
has become one of the most popular displays, said

Miami-Key Largo regatta compared to go-fast drag race

Vessels 14 feet or longer wanted
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Nearly 250 boaters will be pointing their bows
south next month for the 42nd annual running of the
Miami to Key Largo Sailing Regatta.
Over the years the regatta has gained the reputation
of being oneof the-best attended racesin South Florida,
said David Finlay, a member of the Miami YachtfClub,
which sponsors the event. .
"We attract everyone from Olympic-caliber
competitors to families with kids," said Finlay, who sits
on the club's race organizing committee and will be
vying for a trophy-in his Catalina 30.
This year's regatta will kick off at 8 a.m.,on April 26.
The racebeginsjust south of the Rickenbacker Causeway
in Key Biscayne and ends north of the Jewfish Creek
Bridge in Key Largo.
Vessels of any type 14 feet or longer are welcome.
Everyone will set sail with a single shotgun start. But
boats will be judged according to class when it comes
time to present the awards.
About 20 class categories are expected in this year's
regatta, said Finlay, a Miami Springs resident.
"There willbe hundreds of vessels in all shapes and'
sizes," he said. "You'll see Olympic Tornado catamarans
beam to beam with heavy gunkholers. Prindles pushing
Pearsons. Morgans munching Melgeses."
Boaters can select any course of their choosing,
including taking a shortcut, through Midnight Pass,
which sits halfway between Key Biscayne and Key
Largo just south of Elliot Key.

But beware. The pass is only six inches deep in some
places at low tide, Finlay said.
"The most popular and safest route is along the
channels," he said.
Rick White, a professional sailor from Key Largo
who will be competing in his Nacro 6.0 catamaran, said
mostbeginnerboaters should find the race tobe relatively
easy.
"It's iot tricky," he said. "Just head the same way as
everyone else.- :
White, who hasbeen enteriig theregatta since 1985,
said he really enjoys the event.
"It's like an all out drag race," he said. "You go as
straight as you can, as fast as you can."
Bill Roberts, another long-time competitor from
Palm City, agrees. He compares the regatta to a flat out
sprint.
"It's like doing the 100 yard dash for 43 miles," he
said.
Roberts has been entering the race on and off since
1965. He holds the regatta record, which he made seven
years ago by setting a time of one hour and 44 minutes
in an RC-27.
Roberts built the catamaran in a warehouse. At this.
year's event, he willbe competing in a RC-30 thathe also
constructed from scratch. His son, Eric, 26, wiill be
skippering the craft.
Roberts is hoping to set a new record at the 1997
regatta. But the outcome of the race will depend on
wind conditions, he said.
Even if he doesn't win, the event will give him a
good opportunity to see how the RC-30 will fare.

"I like to compare the performance of my designs to
other craft," said Roberts, aboat designer andmechanical
engineer.
Although much of the 1997 regatta will remain the
same, the biggest change is that an awards ceremony
and barbecue will be held immediately following the
event in Key Largo.
In the past, the party was scheduled several days
after the regatta, Finlay said.:
"It's going to be a total fun weekend," Finlay said.
-"We'll race down theteiwith all our friends on Saturday,
party with them that nightnantdheirhave a leisurely sail
back home on Sunday."

The regatta is open to all craft 14 feet.or longer.
Regular registration ends on April 20. Entry fees are

post-race party.
Those signing up for the event after April 20 pay

Museum's display focuses on coral reef

MARINE EXHIBITS FROM P.1
Woody Wilkes, director of science and
technology at the museum.
"The aquarium depicts an accurate
cross section of sea life that we might find
off our own coast," Wilkes said.
The tank simulates daylight to dusk,
generates ocean surges and has changing
tides. Its inhabitants include starfish, sea
cucumbers, sea urchins, shrimp, crabs
and corals, he said.
Other displays on marine life feature
sharks and sea turtles. There is also a
photographic exhibitby the International
Year of the Reef Committee about the
plight of the reefs and what efforts are
being made to save them, Wilkes said.
Some of those efforts are being done
by Wilkes and other scientists at the
museum. Their behind-the-scenes
research includes stimulating coral tissue
regeneration and growing new colonies

For some reason the only thing that
kept popping into my head was the title
to a Van Halen record.
"Diver Down."
At least one of Erik Helton's
coworkers had to have uttered those
words around 1:30 p.m. that Monday
afternoon last month. The shallow
u d iwdte
had suddenly
turned black
and deeply
disturbed over
Erik, who was
JW,9 dredging the
bottom with a
vacuum hose.
"Di ver
down..."
A diver
/ was down.
Buried
beneath an underwater mudslide that
had collapsed from the hole he had been
dredging. As an employee of the Davie-
based Subaqueous Services dredging,
company, Erik was digging aboat slip in
the canal behind a. Lighthouse Point
home when coworkers noticed the,
disturbance in the water.
There was a shot at a successful
rescue. A hose running from land-to-
diver supplied Erik with oxygen. If he
could breathe, time could be bought not
only for the county's emergency rescue
workers, but for the emergency services
workers employed by the cities of Fort
Lauderdale and Pompano Beach and B
& K Marine, which not only lent their
expertise but coordinated the 21/2-hour
delivery of a high-powered machine
called a "Hydrojet" that is able to place
tubes around a submerged body and
jettison water underneath it in an effort
to push the victim out.
Lord knows what words informed
Greg Helton that his son w as the diver
down. Greg is a superintendent .with
Subaqueous Services, and somehow the"

simple words "Erik's down" seem'
sufficiently assumlable.
...,.. Stil,.father and mother could only
watch frorh a backyard as a rescue crew
working the highest powered dredging
machines available tried to save their 20-
year-old 1toy. The emergency workers
toiled until it got too dark to do anything
but call it quits until the next day's
sunrise.
::iIt wasa coworker whospotted Erik's
Sharid protruding from the bottom of the
canal Tuesday morning. Later that night
at the Lighthouse Point City Commission
meeting, Fire Chief John Lavisky
explained that five feet of mud lay
between the top of Erik's head and the
canal's bottom surface. His feet were
buried more than 10 feetbelow thecanal's
floor.
It meant that the piped-in air supply
was as moot a point as the album title in
my head. When the 10-foot wall of mud
collapsed, Erik's lungs caved in from the
enormous amount of pressure that had
suddenly buried him. The most humane
description that comes to mind is that
Erik died of suffocation. Television news
accounts of the impossible recovery
surrounding the Valuejet crash in the
Everglades began to flash in my head.
Machines dug and rescue divers
worked to finally recover the body of
Erik Hilton a little before noon the
following day.
A few hours later I visited the site.
The rescue workers were gone. So were
most of the machines, with the exception
of a few that led me to assume that the
dredgingjob would stillbe completed at
some time in the near future. The area's
natural beauty overshadowed an eerie
tension hovering over the spot like an
invisible fog.
"Diver Down." Van. Halen? Think
so. Think anything other than the thought
of a 20-year-old kid being buried alive
underneath the bottom of a canal.
Anything.

BRYAN ROAD FROM P.5
completed in 1998.
When Bass Pro and the IGFA open, marine-related
businesses will be the largest employer in the city, and
the largest contributor to its tax base, Mikes said.
Some folks agree that adding a Boaters Boulevard
will only further cement the city's reputation as a major
center for marine commerce.
"The marine industry has been in a Dania for a long
time," said City Commissioner Bill Hyde. "It just hasn't
been recognized for its contributions. But I think that is
changing."
Joel Treichel, secretary-treasurer of the year-old
Dania Marine Trades Association, said he also thinks
that having two nautically-named streets would be a
good promotional tool.
"It's an excellent idea," said Treichel, owner of
Treichel Marine Repair at 850 NE Third St. "Most people
don't associate Dania with the marine industry. In the
past, the city has always been known more for its
antique district:"
Brown believes that a Boaters Boulevard would be
a big plus for Dania too. "Imagine an Anglers Avenue
one block west of Interstate-95 and a Boaters Boulevard
one block east of 1-95," she said.
When Brown and her husband first opened Dusky
Marine 18 years ago, there was only one other nautical
business on Bryan Road, she said. "It was nothing but

muck land."
The increase of marine companies moving into Dania
since then has primarily been due to availability of
affordable waterfront land, Mikes said.
"In other cities, waterfront property has been
snapped up by residential developers," he said.
In the future, Mikes foresees Dania having more
marine businesses than any other municipality in
Broward, including Fort Lauderdale.
But as important as the marine industry is to Dania,
there is a possible hitch in renaming Bryan Road, he
said.
"We're the oldest city in Broward and a lot of our
street names have historical significance," he said. "We
don't want to forget our past while moving forward."
Bryan Road was named after John Bryan, a former
county commissioner and city pioneer. Bryan once lived
in a large two-story brick house on the street, said City
Attorney Frank Adler.
"He was an important part of Broward County and
Dania's history," said Adler, who moved to the city in
1929 and has remained friends with Bryan's family. "He
deserves the honor."
But Adler thinks there's room for compromise.
"I would like to see the street hyphenated using
both names," he said. "That way we can recognize the
marine businesses and the Bryan name can be
preserved."

THEATER

Fund-raiser to target deserving drama students

Compiled y JENNIE BERMAN
Waterfront News Columnist
*JanrMcArt's American Festival Series provides
scholarships and internships for qualifying children in
the arts. On Monday, April 14, a fund-raiser called the
Jeans & Jewels Western Extravaganza will take place at
the Royal Palm Dinner Theatre Centre, 315 SE Mizner
Blvd, Boca Raton, with "moonshine and finger lickin
vittles" starting at 6 p.m. on the garden patio along with
a Chinese auction. At 7:15 p.m. everyone will enter the
main theatre for hearty western grub and entertainment
led by a live country-western band. Kick up your boots
as you line dance, dressed in the requested western
attire.
Admission is $75 per person and includes three
Chinese auction tickets for a chance to win trips, sports
memorabilia.or jewelry. A portion of your ticket is tax
deductible. FAU drama major Richie Herr, the 1996
recipient of a $1,000 scholarship, will make an
appearance. For more information call (561) 392-3755.
Liberace, the Legend Lives sweeps into Jan's Rooftop
Cabaret, for a limited engagement. Martin Preston does
a recreation of "Mr. Showmanship;" complete with

candelabra, mirrored grand piano and eye-popping,
glittering creations based upon original Liberace designs.
A classically trained pianist, Preston will astound
you with Liberace favorites including "Malaguena,"
"The 12th Street Rag," "The Beer Barrel Polka" and "I'll
be Seeing You." He's joined on stage by Broadway song
stylistWilliam Garon who delights with grand standards
including selections from the Phantom of the Opera. Six
shows will be performed May 11, matinee and evening;
May 15-17 evenings; and May 18 twilight. Call (407) 392-
3755.
*Also currently performing through June 1 at the
Royal Palm Dinner Theatre is the Will Rogers Follies
starring Jonathan Beck Reed. The Broadway musical
about the old rope twirler and storyteller Will Rogers,
the Oklahoma boy who became one of producer Florenz
Ziegfeld's greatest show biz attractions, is the kind of
all-American musical many have been waiting for. Call
(800) 841-6765.
*Anastasia plays April 4-20 at Opus Playhouse, 7878
Wiles Rd., Coral Springs. A Berlin taxi driver is tempted
to cash in on a fortune being held for the surviving
princess of a Russian czar, but he doesn't know the

imperial grandmother is still alive. For more information
call 753-7070.
*The heartbreaking, engrossing play The Heiress
plays April 6 to May 18 at the Caldwell Theatre Co, 7873
N. Federal Hwy., Boca Raton. A shy and plain girl falls
desperately in love with a handsome, charming fortune
hunter who proposes marriage. When her successful
doctor-father sees through the hoax and forbids the
marriage, his daughter opts for an elopement. For more
information call 930-6400.
*Little Shop of Horrors plays April 9 to May 11 at the
Hollywood Playhouse, 2640 Washington St., Hollywood.
The spoof focuses on the voracious cravings of an
unearthly plant that eats anything in sight. Full of
suspense with plenty of music and dancing, this
horticultural horror will leave you screaming with
laughter. Call 922-0404.
*The Neil Simon comedy Star Spangled Girl plays at
the Broward Stage Door Theatre, 8036 W. Sample Rd.,
Coral Springs, April 23 to May 11. It's the story of two
men who fall in love with the all-American girl living
next door. A bubbly, sexy series of happenings show the
skill that has become Simon's trademark. Call 344-7765.
